  • Ethanol-laced gasoline is not recommended for small engines. After destroying a weed wacker, a lawn mower, and an expensive generator, I researched ways to resolve this issue.
Additives are not the answer. Removing the ethanol is the only sure way to prolong the life of your 2 stroke engines. Here's how I learned to do it!
To all the concerned viewers worried about the pilot light in the water heater behind me, the garage door and side door were open for air flow, and this was filmed in the garage for better videography purposes (even though the audio was poor).

Thank you for this excellent video. I worked at an airport as a ground crew for spray planes and found out that Avgas, used in turbo-prop engines is a good fuel for two stroke engines. No ethanol, and will not break down over time. No treatment is required if you keep the gas over the winter. It costs about 25% more than premium, but I believe it is well worth the cost.
Most local airports will have Avgas available. I suggest you call first to let them know you are coming by. I buy about twenty litres minimum each time.
Nevertheless, one thing that I always do is drain any left over gas from my two stroke engines and running them until they die before storing them. Way less chance of being affected by deteriorated fuel in your engines.

Turboprop engines use JetA. Piston engines use 100LL. Don't put Jet A in a piston engine, two-stroke or four stroke. If there is enough gasoline left in the tank to start the engine, when the Jet A gets there, goodbye engine!

@@cmichaelhoover8432 You don’t understand jet fuel. It can be a jet-A, Jet-B, or Jet A1, or even JP-4.
Some turboprops, (Pratt & Whitney PT-6), are certified to burn gasoline for a certain time. I’ve run them in the Arctic, in a pinch on diesel fuel, gasoline, & even stove oil.
I burn appx 125 metric tonnes (appx 275,000lb), of jet A every trip to Hong Kong. It is glorified kerosene. It is NOT some super powerful explosive concoction that will cause your gasoline engine to explode.
The effect is the same as putting diesel into your car. It does no damage to the engine, but since the engine cannot burn it, the fuel system needs to be flushed.

Thanks for the video. I work at a refinery here is what I know
Ethanol and water are polar molecules so they like to stick together. Gasoline is organic so it likes other organic molecules. Because ethanol and water are both polar molecules ethanol (which is basically alcohol) is hygroscopic (will absorb water). It will not only absorb free water (water droplets) but it will also absorb dissolved water (humidity) from the air. Once ethanol fuel has absorbed more than .4 wt% (weight percent) water, the fuel will stratify (ethanol and gasoline will separate). This happens because the ethanol becomes denser (heavier) and will go to the bottom of the gas container leaving the gasoline on the top. The ethanol and gasoline WILL not mix again and will stay as two separate liquids in the same container. So you have gasoline on the top and wet ethanol on the bottom.
So here is the real problem. The ethanol helps to increase the octane of the fuel; its octane rating is about 116%. Raw gasoline without the ethanol additive has an octane rating of about 83%. Once the fuel has stratified into two separate liquids the gasoline (on the top) will only have about a 83% octane instead of the regular 87% that you bought at the pumps.
So, you have to add enough Octane booster to keep the fuel from pre-igniting as the piston comes up to Top Dead Center. I do not know how much Octane booster you need. If you use low Octane fuel in small engines, especially chainsaws and trimmers, you will most likely overheat the engine and destroy it. I have seen overheated engines from using low octane fuel many times.

Ethanol also creates more heat,so if we use 93 or 94 than we will be left with 89 or so,that more than acceptable in most small engines.

One thing you forgot to mention is that in order to do this you need to use premium gasoline. Removing the ethanol will drop the octane rating by 3 points. If you use regular 87 octane E-10, the end result will be only 84 octane pure gasoline. With premium 91 or 93 you will get either 88 or 90 octane fuel.

Pragmatic Mindset not a concern... I thought you cared about your engine

    • @nathanegbert977
      @nathanegbert977 7 років тому +21

Joel, two-stroke engines don't share the problems of four-stroke engines resulting from low octane fuels. Detonation (knock) and preignition are reduced by using slower burning (higher octane) fuel. This is important for modern four-cycle engines with high compression ratios. Two-stroke engines do not have the compression ratios required for detonation, and a two-stroke engine suffering preignition will simply stall. As such, a two-stroke engine will not destroy itself like a multi-cylinder four-cycle engine where the remaining cylinders overpower preignition until it damages the cylinder.
Ethanol is actually a superior fuel to gasoline. It burns much slower and is more energy dense. However, that slow burn increases heat transfer to the cylinder wall. Four-cycle engines are water cooled and can remove this additional heat. Two-cycle engines are air cooled and the increased heat can degrade lubrication on the cylinder wall resulting in friction. Once friction starts to add additional heat, engine failure soon follows (usually takes about 30 seconds from first notice of power loss, if you don't immediately reduce throttle).
So, four-stroke engines always benefit from high octane fuel and ethanol is actually preferable if the engine was designed to burn it. Two-stroke engines prefer low octane fuel, especially in hot weather. Hope this helps. It's all stuff I had to learn the hard way!

Nice setup! I like the stool as the holder. One comment is that I would be loathe to use a glass jug, as smashing it by accident would be really ugly! I think there must be some really big plastic jugs. I use a gas can and just drain it until gas starts out. But I like seeing it. Thus far I have only had to rebuild one carb in the 5 or so years I've been doing this. I have 5 two stroke and 3 4 stroke engines I run this stuff in.
Thankfully they have not seen fit to pollute diesel, so my tractor is safe.

Following mathmatical formulas, theoretically you should recover 12.8oz of ethanol per gallon if it is true E-10. Love your repurposing of the stool, a wonderfully simple idea that works, I would however recommend turning the jug upside down while you wait for it to separate that way you reduce the chance of water being left behind, and the ethanol should be well enough diluted that it won't degrade the rubber stopper.

I’m a big fan of 100LL Aviation Fuel. I’ve got racing motorcycles, but I use it in mowers, weed eaters, and chainsaws. All my equipment is 14+ years old and I’ve never had to replace a single fuel line and they all run like the day I bought them. It’s around $3.85 a gallon right now, but considering race gas is $8-$15 that’s not to bad. As you would imagine, aviation fuel is held to a MUCH higher standard than motor vehicle gas. They test for water, contaminates, etc.

So they put ethanol in our gas to save the environment. It destroys the parts in our car, so we buy more to fix them. It takes fuel, labor and energy to manufacture these new parts. We put additives in our gas to make it usable. The additives come in plastic containers and it too has to be manufactured, refined and packaged. We put back in what they take out. We create the same pollution we had before ethanol.. no wait, more pollution since we are now adding things back in to our fuel to make it useable and wasting plastic containers etc. Oh and don't forget about another big lie they pulled without telling us. They removed essential zinc from out motor oils. Do a little research on what motor oil without zinc will do to your lawn mower, your other small engines, your older engines with flat tappet cams..

Easier way to get the water back out is to simply pour the gas through a mister funnel. It's filter media does not allow any water to pass through. Since the ethanol is contained in the water it wont pass through the filter. Can test the final product with the food coloring. Food coloring in ethanol free gas will roll around the bottom like a couple of BB's. If ethanol is present the food coloring will tint the color of the fuel.

I just did a test with water saturated ethanol and the three sizes I have. They eventually filtered out the ethanol, after a LOT of passes. I think that only happened because the ethanol got trapped in the sumps. Not all sizes have sumps. Most of the water saturated ethanol made it through, if it didn't get stuck in the sump.

Great vid. "Ethanol-laced gasoline" does allow some water to become homogenous within the gasoline due to hydrophilic property of ETOH. As water accumulates (or is added), saturation of the ETOH occurs; and it is at this point separation of the gas from the H20/ETOH occurs. You will not see phase separation until enough water has saturated the alcohol to separate them from the gas. Furthermore, consumers pay a Hot Fuel Premium for fuel dispensed at over 60 degrees F, since gas is sold to consumers by volume instead of weight. Don't get me started on the .9 cent rates... sorry for the rant. Thanks.

Just rigorously shake the weed eater befrore starting it to mix the separation that occured during Storage. Push the primer bulb till you see fuel in it. Set choke if yours has one. Then pull rope four or five times real slow before a Full pull. It has a reed valve in the engine and four slow 1/4 to 1/2 pulls get the mix into the crankcase. I bought the right screw Driver for adjusting my models carb, to tweak the idle slow and fast/run needles A 1/16th of a turn back and forward to correct a Bad ildle or running rpm stumble.
Most folks incorrectly assume that the gas they buy at the pump is clean. Look in your gas can after fill-up.The gas may have rust And crap from the refinery and/or the gas stations in ground fuel tanks. You can buy a tiny inline filter to splice into the fuel line to The carb. The one inside these cheap 2 strokes fuel tank doesn't work worth beans, if it even works at all.

One thing to think about if you extract the ethanol. You will be left with "pure" gasoline, but the lead will not be there either.
Be very careful about putting this into an older 4-stroke engine that was designed to have lead in it. The lead acted as a lubricant for the valves. So, you will burn up your valves without lead in the gas.
Newer engines solved this by making valves that weren't dependent on lead to keep them cool and lubricated.

Unless you're running pre-1980's most two stroke etc., the hoses, washers and gaskets should be of a type that ethanol shouldn't hurt them. Ethanol produces better tork then pure gas and helps keep fuel systems cleaner then pure gas. If ethanol hasn't been used, than is, you may need to replace the fuel filter, because it will clean the tank and a lot of that build-up gunk will end up in the fuel filter and gunk that lined the hoses post filter may get the screen in the carb clogged up. It also helps keep water out of the fuel system and prevents freeze ups in winter. Heat® is an alcohal that I use to have to put in my car tanks, etc. befor E10% for South Dakota winters. A lot of old engines, and cars use to have a glass bulb on the fuel line that would collect water that settled out of the gas and would need to be emptied of water and gunk at least once a year. Ethanol aborbs it. No more puddles of water in the bottom of the gas tank. Over all 10-15% ethol is a better fuel and burns cleaner, keeps tanks, fuel lines, carbs/injecters cleaner. I have an old Homelite Chainsaw from the 1970's, so need ethol free for that. My newer Huskey Chainsaw is built to run ethol blend. It should say in the manual that comes with your equipment or you could call/email company about it.

I disagree, I had a brand new weed whacker and stored it over the winter with Ethanol fuel in it. Following Spring I pulled my guts out trying to start it. Upon further examination, the fuel lines were completely destroyed, almost "gelatinous" to be honest. It's one thing to run Ethanol in a daily/weekly driven/used machine, but for something that isn't used to that extent or stored for periods of time, NON- Ethanol fuel is the way to go. Since using Non-Ethanol fuels in ALL my smaller engine/not used daily or weekly equipment I haven't any issues! Period! ZERO! I can put chainsaws, weed whackers, leaf blowers, mowers and snow blowers away for the off season and pull them out when needed and they start like a champ EVERY time!!

whose lawnmower runs on 2 cycle gas??!! anyway, interesting vid but the easy solution to keep all your 2 stroke engines in good running condition is to merely dump all the gas out of the fuel tank of the weed whipper/leaf blower/chain saw after you use them and let the engine run until its bone dry and cannot restart. i'm 50 years old. my last two weed whippers, 2 stroke cheapies, each ran 10 years or more. my chainsaw has been running for 10 years and still going. my leaf blower has been running for 10 years, as did the one before that. i do not doubt the merits of this video but i think there are easier ways to keep your engines alive.

Actually the problem is caused by caused by the ethanol dropping the boiling point of unleaded gasoline from 35 degrees C to 18 degrees C.
On a hot 2 stroke motor the fuel air mixture should only vapourise when the piston is at the top of its stroke, not when it enters the cylinder bore via the transfer ports during scavenging when the motor is running at operating temperature.
This causes poor combustion and loss of power, so the operator throttles up a bit to compensate, which causes the engine to run hotter and the cycle goes around until a piston seizure occurs or the spark plug soots up, killing the ignition.
Castrol engineers, in a published report, recommend adding a small measure of kerosene or diesel into a 2 stroke gas tank. After 2 years of experimentation I've settled on 2% to 3% diesel in the E5 unleaded petrol sold in the UK, which restores the lost bottom and midrange torque on high compression Jawa and CZ 2 stroke road bikes plus has ended the spark plugs sooting up. The plugs are now the correct coffee brown tint.
Ethanol + Oxygen = Acetic Acid (vinegar). This is an iron solvent and also destroys rubber, neoprene, gas tank weld sealants and a few other things. It settles to the bottom of the tank as its created and is responsible for the brown shite in carb float bowls (despite inline fuel filters) and all gas tank woes including pin holes appearing.
The good news is that placing a zinc boating anode into the gas tank soaks up all the Acetic Acid as it is created. I've done this on one bike and the fuels hose destruction , dissolved iron deposits in the carb and gas tank corrosion stopped the day after I'd installed it.
On the downside zinc boating anodes, even small ones, are expensive. They can be cut up though to fix more than one gas tank.

interesting video but non ethanol regular gas is available in my area for $2.79 per gallon verses $2.29 per gallon for 10% ethanol fuel. for the 50 cents difference when I need non ethanol fuel I will pay the price and not have to convert fuel to non ethanol fuel. I avoid 2 cycle engines and use battery powered weed eater and leaf blower and chainsaw and am impressed with the power and run time of the battery tools. battery operated tools are expensive but pay for themselves over time with fuel savings and maintenance . there is no pulling a rope to start, they run quieter, no fumes to smell, no mixing and storing fuel. I have never had an issue with ethanol fuel in my 4 cycle lawnmower engines.

  • @steveskouson9620
    @steveskouson9620 7 років тому

The main issue with ethanol and
    2 strokes is;
    The ethanol/water mix WILL support
combustion. But, there is no oil present.
Oil will mix with gas, as well as ethanol.
But, when water is added, only a small
amount, the ethanol will mix with that
water, and leave the oil in the gas.
Now you have a fuel mix in your tank,
    that hates oil.

First BIG MISTAKE and NO NO is putting any kind of flammable liquids into a glass container!, BAD IDEA!. Second it is very important to use DISTILLED WATER! so minerals do not get absorbed into the gasoline which will then turn into a crusty ash type of deposit inside 2 cycle engines, eventually seizing the exhaust side of the piston/cylinder. A clear plastic water jug is a much better choice and the good ethanol free fuel can simply be poured off carefully into another empty CLEAR PLASTIC JUG leaving behind the unwanted separated water/ethanol and it is best to allow the clean jug to now settle overnight and repeat the pour off process once more leaving behind the last small amounts of water. Now the fuel is ready to be blended with good high quality 2-cycle oil for use in chainsaws, blowers and any other 2-cycle engines. Please avoid putting any flammable liquids into glass containers of any kind because if you drop it or it breaks you have an instant major fire hazard compared to impact resistant plastic.

It seems like it would be soooo much easier just to pay a little more for the Ethanol free off-highway gasoline. I guess it is not available in your area? I think by adding water you are just making the problem worse. The only way to separate ethanol from gasoline is by distillation and that would be exceedingly dangerous to do at home. When you add water you are just reaching the limit of the ethanol's ability to absorb water. Some of the ethanol is still there.
