i think 60 hours for first playthrough is kinda an understatement for people who just go into it, my first playthrough was about 115 hours, though his comment of mastering the game brings a sense of achievement is true. I never been more proud of finishing a game and getting all the trophies.
I think I took about 111 Hours to finish it the first time - and I wasn't rushing. I think on an immediate replay you could do it much much quicker as you'd have a better idea what to do and what not to do.
Same here, roughly 120 hours. Enjoyed them though, which is what matters. Just grinded more than average and didn't explore enough hexes at first because quite a few provided extra bezel fragments. Also took a lot of time to wise up to a lot of the intricacies this deep game has but those are what I cherish about it!
This game might make its way in steam as per reddit. and I'm gonna purchase it in day one if it does happen.. 1 of the 4 games that i got 100% trophies in my ps3. that is how much I loved this game
I've never found classic turn-based combat in JRPGs interesting, but this game's combat system looks way more fun and interesting. I might check it out.
GREAT review! Game reviewers DO rip on games that don't hold your hand! And I had an NES back in the 80's and I remember when they didn't! I'll have to get this one.
I have been playing JRPGs and RPGs for years, literally. I haven't been so challenged by one like this, probably ever. The game has a perfect balance of difficulty and entertainment. Play it.
I'm looking up random games right now and I love your guys videos the most cause they're all 1080p, which sounds stupid but actually looks so different/much better on my PC... nice, lol thanks? yeah
Loved this game. Enjoyed every minute of it. The story was kinda of lacking, but the gameplay kept me going. This does get even more challenging when you hit the more later side quests. & the real challenge is the optional dungeon once you get the black hex. Maxed out all my characters there.
It's a good game, actually a great game, after hours of playing I still learn new tricks and strategies, this game should not be rushed and you should be patient. Finish a couple side quests, level up a bit, and you'll be more prepared for that next boss battle
When I was subscribed to Gamefly I rented this game and the day I got it in the mail and tried it out for the first time I was amazed. After 10 minutes of playing the game I went to the Gamefly website and bought it. This game is unique and I have never seen another rpg play in the way this one does, it is a really difficult game but at the same time a really good game. Definitely worth the money if you like rpg's or if you're looking for a challenging game.
I don't think Resonance of Fate is really that complex. If you go through the tutorials once, occasionally refer back to the manual as you're playing the game and understand how things works, the gameplay mechanics is actually pretty simple. The "complexity" may be because it's very different from the usual JRPG games you find out there, something which I really love about this game. It's so sad we'll never be able to see a sequel to this game.
There's also the fact that you're encouraged to customize your guns into incredibly broken monstrosities with several grips, a ton of mags, and iron sights that stretch around the actual gun.
DarklordKyo The gun customization would make any gun enthusiasts weep, but man, it's so satisfying when you manage to fit in all the ridiculous scopes, extenders, grip and stuff.
The main thing about combat to keep in mind is that the charge time for your attacks is based on the character's distance from its target. Once I figured that out things became much easier, but it is still a challenging game.
It's so good looking at the comments and hearing about people saying how underrated this game is, because honestly this is the best JRPG I played this gen and it's better than most JRPGs I played last gen.
this game is one of the greats of this generation. the graphics did exactly what they were supposed to in this game, and didnt try to go overboard. even with the graphics not being complete perfection the detail in every city, dungeon, or general area was amazing. this game can easily be missed by those looking for perfection, but thats almost what this game is. the gameplay is difficult but once mastered so much fun. i have spent 25+ hours on this game enjoying the combat, so i would recommend
Just started this game recently on my ps3, and I have to say it's definitely challenging with seemingly endless possiblilites. A true gem of a game; it feels like Dark Cloud meets Bioshock Infinite. I have a friend of mine who pointed this game out to me and your review video to thank for exposing me to such an exceptional title. Oh, and subbed!
It's easy so long as you know when to use grenades and have your weapons fully customized (having more bezel slots helps too). The first few hours, however, can be very challenging, especially to people playing for the first time.
Just picked this game up. I love when I can find gems like this. I played the demo and kinda forgot about it, but I love games that pushes you and test your skill as a player. Plus its a little different. Good review.
OMFG I guess I will be buying this game now ^^ I've seen it on the shelfs of gamestop a few times and I can tell it's not very popular... because it's super cheep x) and I love JRPGs and love a game that always is challanging and leaves room for improvement. good review! ^^
Nice review, i have this game but i was expecting more on the battles, it becomes repetitive...its cool to see your character doing acrobatic moves but it gets old very fast. Its a very cool game, fans of Valkyrie Profile are going to like this game.
@trilfy kinda. the way you level up in this game is by leveling up your weapons. You have pistol, machinegun, and throw. So let's say your pistol level is 7, machine gun 4, and item throwing is 3. Your character level is 14. It's VERY difficult at first, (at least to me it was) because of having to get used to how to attack, and a bunch of other crazy stuff. Let's put it this way, there are 16 parts to the tutorial (i think...it might be less i am not playing it right now haha) it took me 2
This game is hard. But it's great. Well, it's great because it's hard. Or something. Anyway. I really like the battles. They remind me of Arc the Lad: Twilight of the Spirits, very much so.
@baozakerga I found it a very nice twist on the rpg genre. I will admit it can get a little repetitive at times but overall the strategy required for each battle makes it fun. Worth a checking out for sure.
@iscrewy I disagree. While I like checkpoints, they aren't needed, and it isn't a cheap tactic. Demon's Souls has very few checkpoints, and it's more of a throwback to older games, rather than a "gimmick". the perfect balance is having checkpoints at a good distance(farther rather than shorter), and in combination with quicksaves
I can vouch for the ridiculous learning-curve.. I'm 14 hours in, grinded to level 19, on chapter 4, and I'm STILL getting my butt handed to me time after time. But, it's still such a rewarding game if you can tough it out.
thats the fun part of the game the customization the story its not so deep but when you play all the side quest and talk to the npc you will learn alot about the environment
There always needs to be a balance when it comes to difficulty. If it's too hard, people will get bored and frustrated. If it's too easy, it's unsatisfying. A game has struck the right balance when it kicks your ass and you come back for more.
@Ulti2k I find the hardness (if that's a word) to be very fair, the beginning is indeed very hard, but once you get the hang of it, which takes some time, is an amazing and in the end, very fun and fair. I did very little, if at all grinding throughout the game, and was able to finish it fully. So it truly is learning how to play the game, and not the level or strength of your characters that matter.
as a jrpg player this game isnt for everyone.however if you're like me and want something different this game is awesome.i havent beat it yet, but i have enjoyed myself immensly already.
the best part of this game imo is the gun customization part, whereby you customize ur gun so much that it barely looks like a gun anymore, imagine a handgun with 3 scopes running out of it lol
IMO based on the reviews i watched, they centered the game heavily upon the gameplay mechanics (IMO is how an RPG really reveals its true value) , losing focus on visual diversity, focusing only on a monochrome like gray world, its better as long as the rewards for your ascention through the game never becomes boring,
I thought the first Dark Cloud game was a solid RPG for its time with dialogue typos and sometimes awkward animations aside. The overworld sandbox mode and dungeons were quite fun. Dark Cloud isn't for everyone, and I really didn't care for the sequel. Now that I think about it, I'd substitue Dark Cloud with Final Fantasy as a better analogy, but my comparison was merely subjective, and I would recommend this to any RPG fan looking for a fresh experience.
I like this game and yes you do loose the occasional fight and it can be a pain. and later in the game you will pay for not having your characters set up correctly - but it's not especially hard, there is an element of luck to fights to be honest, and the only time I really recall getting my ass handed to me was on Bridges. I like the level design and characters and when things are going well it's kinda relaxing. but you have to grind the heck out of the arenas & other rewards or you will not get to the higher levels at all. I was actually strongly considering replaying this game since it was a few years since I last played it and I kinda miss it. It's one of those games I have a strange fondness for even though it's not an especially well known game - I rather enjoyed it.
i totallly agree with u it feels like no one wants a solo story line game anymore they want to play with other people just to show there better then them in a short proid of time
Is this an official Classic game room review channel? I ask because I notice their are a few of these channels with a similar name. Any1 know the official CGR channel?
The only problem I have so far with this game, is the plot. I'm on chapter 3 but, I have no idea where the story is going. I really enjoy the customization and wish that more games had this feature.
I never knew what the he'll was going on with this games story. Who was the demon girl, what are those weird symbols that show up when people were shot to death and why does it make them come back to life?
Talked too much about how different it is and didn't mention how poorly paced the story is, or how repetitive the battles are, or how mediocre the music is. But I agree about the insane difficulty and learning curve it's insane. Despite what I just said, I still enjoy the game, somewhat.
i thought it would be so, if i wasn't sure on how to play it would very difficult to play this game.. beside it was how to figure out how to level up characters and weapons, which was a problem
@Ulti2k it depends, i think it was a good type of challenging, but i cant really rate it. if ur smart it easy-hard, if ur moderate it moderately hard, and so on
+SmoothCriminalAaron I don't recall this game being all that hard either. I remember it being challenging, but I thought it hit the sweet spot of being fun and challenging. Kind of like how Mega Man or Contra were. I really liked this game a lot, and I did all the bonus missions, even that one after the game that was actually pretty difficult if I recall. Seeing this review makes me want to pick it up again, and try the next difficulty (I believe once you beat it on hard or normal, the next higher difficulty unlocks)
+mk “mkohanek” mk I never did the bonus dungeon when I played XBOX 36o version, now I'm doing the PS3 and I think I'll do it. I attempted it and it's reaaaaly hard.
It's a very fun game if you can get past the first 4 chapters. After you're able to level up and get s good supply of shards while leveled up you can pretty much handle everything. I Almost completely quit out of frustration on an ESCORT mission where I couldn't heal it. If you get stuck buy lots of meds at early levels, level up a lot and exploit the most destructive way to kill enemies. For instance when you get to chapter 4 KILL STUFF FAST or it's game over especially the boss.
i agree with everything the guy said, i completed the game to platinum and had about 80 hours, believe me. This might have been the hardest game that came out in it's year (then again i didin't play that much that year). one thing; you might want to brsuh up you're tactioc in the game ;), just a tip.
IMO - the difference in reviews that CGR and IGN do is simply this : IGN will review a game and tell me its strong points and weaknesses. (which is what a good review is) BUT...CGR can do the same exact thing and still make me want to play it based off 'their' review. When IGN does this : it just feels like i should feel guilty for even thinkin' bout playin' a certain game.
The combat system takes awhile to get used to but eventually gets repetitive. And not being able to level up anything, besides your gun kinda leaves very little to lookfoward to. This is a rather subpar and shallow reveiw for this, it doesn't really tell you much. All I'll say is this game went to the bottom of my playlist when I bought Demon's Souls, Heavy Rain, Transformers, and FF13 and I never went back
@Enther18 there is nothing wrong with checkpoints... if you accomplish something why should you have to redo it? even most nes games had checkpoints and that system had tons of challenging games.... losing hours of gameplay from dying once is a cheap half assed challenge..... not to mention how half old games were only challenging due to memorization which shouldn't be confused with skill.... trial and error is in all games so a single death shouldn't throw you to the beginning
@VideoGuitarGuy Theyre different games. Nier is a hack n slash and Resonance of Fate is a strategic game. I liked Resonance of Fate better, but then again I havent finished Nier and I tend to lean toward games with RoF style (Valkyrie Profile 2)
Is this game unfair hard or is it something with a "fair" hardness (the last remnant was unfair hard because of the luck element). I like hard games as long as the hardnes is fair witch means if you are skilled enough and think about your mistakes you can solve it. Not like other hard games where you did nothing wrong but the game-dice decided you have to loose...
@Kingofprinces85 I am pretty sure that they are mostly gamers who grew up with insane 8-bit games as kids and have a sense of nostalgia embedded into their biased opinions. I for one started gaming when I was three and experienced these near impossible challenges a ton. They were frustrating, sure, and the fact that there were no online FAQs/vids provided a more social aspect to gaming as a whole, where people all talked at school about how to fucking own Tyson, or kill mother fucking brain.

I really enjoy the customization and wish that more games had this feature.
i love your vocabulary
@plaguuu I wouldn't say so either, but I could see how it might be for some. I know it nearly was for the friend whose copy I've been playing.
How bout a video of Mark trying to play this?
I never knew what the he'll was going on with this games story. Who was the demon girl, what are those weird symbols that show up when people were shot to death and why does it make them come back to life?
@JazzyJames019 It is ;) Derek is one of Marks companions.
Talked too much about how different it is and didn't mention how poorly paced the story is, or how repetitive the battles are, or how mediocre the music is. But I agree about the insane difficulty and learning curve it's insane. Despite what I just said, I still enjoy the game, somewhat.
derek has been the only reviewer i've seen to COMPLIMENT the games visuals
i thought it would be so, if i wasn't sure on how to play it would very difficult to play this game.. beside it was how to figure out how to level up characters and weapons, which was a problem
@Ulti2k it depends, i think it was a good type of challenging, but i cant really rate it. if ur smart it easy-hard, if ur moderate it moderately hard, and so on
Who is the guy talking I watch reviews from CGRUndertow and it is not always this guy and the other few are boring.
I loved this game so much, it sucks that it wasn't very popular and it's probably dead and gone :(
It's Remastered
@JosephStalin11 and ? i asume you got the game now ... is it hard ?
it is also on the xbox360
I though this game was easy, and when It got hard it only got addicting. Really best game ever.
For instance when you get to chapter 4 KILL STUFF FAST or it's game over especially the boss.
do you if Resonance of Fate have more games like kingdom heats??
@his1nightmare I recomend the Ps3 Version cause it has exclusive content, larger story, playable characters and outfits.
i agree with everything the guy said, i completed the game to platinum and had about 80 hours, believe me.
This might have been the hardest game that came out in it's year (then again i didin't play that much that year).
one thing; you might want to brsuh up you're tactioc in the game ;), just a tip.
IMO - the difference in reviews that CGR and IGN do is simply this :
IGN will review a game and tell me its strong points and weaknesses.
It seems like all the Japanese games are the really hard games, but thats not a bad thing
I love this game
looks like a great game
i like derek's voice. it sounds unique
It's like a John woo jrpg.
@VideoGuitarGuy Theyre different games. Nier is a hack n slash and Resonance of Fate is a strategic game. I liked Resonance of Fate better, but then again I havent finished Nier and I tend to lean toward games with RoF style (Valkyrie Profile 2)
Most under rated JRPG
too bad no footage of Neverland was shown. Now that shit is hardcore. The first 4 chapters(which of the footage here is shown) is a piece of cake.
love it, good game, but menu system could be better, thanks for the review
Is this game unfair hard or is it something with a "fair" hardness (the last remnant was unfair hard because of the luck element). I like hard games as long as the hardnes is fair witch means if you are skilled enough and think about your mistakes you can solve it. Not like other hard games where you did nothing wrong but the game-dice decided you have to loose...
I just bought this game today but this review has me scared as fuck to even start playing it. It can't be THAT hard.....can it?
@Kingofprinces85 I am pretty sure that they are mostly gamers who grew up with insane 8-bit games as kids and have a sense of nostalgia embedded into their biased opinions. I for one started gaming when I was three and experienced these near impossible challenges a ton. They were frustrating, sure, and the fact that there were no online FAQs/vids provided a more social aspect to gaming as a whole, where people all talked at school about how to fucking own Tyson, or kill mother fucking brain.
But he didn't mention the humor this game has.
