Automatically noticed you were turning clockwise. You were looking at it from wrong side which caused your brain to turn it that way. Done it myself many times but on bolts or nuts not filters.
THANK YOU! I've been trying to explain to Mazzy that it was the angle I was looking at it which confused me. I knew I had to do it anti clockwise and I know my anti clockwise from clockwise. Something just stupidly made me make the mistake by the way I was laying. My favourite comment of the day :-D.
Watching this and I'm shouting at the screen but you didn't hear me Dan! lol Pleased you've got it sorted in the end though, love that pretending to be all innocent look lol. Thanks for the videos they really are great at this time even though I'm sure they are hard to make. All the best!!! John & Sara

Lol the bottle trick works just don’t cut it in half. Cut just the one side out of the bottle that way it’s deeper and you will still have the spot to dump the oil out of the pan much easier.
Please Dan don't touch anything mechanical ever again on the van I was shouting at the screen as soon you put the grips on the filter . PS as a mechanic of 45 years but you make me laugh.👍
Dont really know what you are getting at but if you need any advise you know where I am. I thought you would have a basic grasp of the basics after 45 years.
Dan, You haven’t changed the oil, you have only replaced the filter element and topped up. Dirty oil needs changed by removing sump plug first then replacing the filter
Love how Dan even says "anti clockwise" to himself before proceeding to turn it in the other direction. Then Mazzy asks if he is turning it the right way. Never mind Dan we all learn from our mistakes. Bet you wont forget this one.
I noticed it was the wrong way too but have started to do it wrong a few times myself.I also thought maybe that model is reverse threaded. I found out the hard way on lug nut removal to change a tire on my mothers 66 Chrysler Newport back in the 70's. Twisted off 2 before I realised it was reverse thread. As for that filter, I also have had to resort to using a screwdriver but only twice in all the years of changing mine when I was young. But once , the filter tore up like yours and I was turning it the correct way, just tight as heck. On the new filter ,get a small amount of oil on your finger tip and smear around on the filter seal then hand tight is all they need. They get harder to remove as you get closer to next change. Good try though, Dan and yes, it is a messy job. I blame gravity... : )
Be careful, guys. Shoddy repairs (both interior and exterior) could ultimately have a negative effect on the resale value of your motorhome (should you ever want to sell in the future). It could also end up costing you a lot of money for a professional to fix any problems you haven't done properly even if you're NOT in the market to sell.
Dan!!!!! I was shouting at the tv “your doing it the wrong way” but you didn’t hear me. In the end I was shouting at the misses OMG!!! “He’s doing it the wrong way” 😂😂😂
Yorkie, you tried and that's all that matters. I was proud of you! I wouldn't know the first thing about oil filters or how to change them. This is why my van smelled bad one day and come to find out I had driven 30 miles with out any oil :-D . My husband says there's a tool you can get that wraps around the filter to take them off. If you ever post an address, we'll see if we can send you one.
Hi Dan, glad you got it sorted. The leak you had looked small. But the oil filter is under high pressure when engine is running. So it's probably like a squirt gun down the road... It would've been easy and perfect if your luck turned it the other way. Remember to always stop before the carnage happens. Give time to think. And ask questions to whomever. Even Mazzy can be a good sounding board if you gave it a minute. Proud of you for trying
having carried out numerous oil and filter changes over the years I thought what could possibly go wrong! guess I forgot it was Dan doing it (maybe get Mazzie to do the next one!)
Dan is a master detectorist, magnet fishermen, and darn good video production company, however, very mechanically challenged, to be very kind. Free tip , lefty loosey/righty tighty , PS on a diesel ,new oil every 3-5k miles ( 8-10 K ), filter every other oil change ,hand tightened plus one eighths turn.and next time only cut the side out of the jug , works every time. Cheers from the states mates ;-). !
For future reference, the filter is often snugged down just a little more than hand tight. You can usually get it with just your hand, unless the shop really cranked down on that thing. So a good grip and a little umpf is enough to get the filter started. No tools required.
Massive respect for you posting this vlog Dan, Paul Brown was shouting at the screen no no no youre turning it the wrong way! They do make a tool to remove oil filters. It's a round band that tightens around the filter. Look up oil filter wrench or as you would say oil filter spanner.
I said in the comments a few weeks ago , go to a garage and get it done professionally. These jobs appear simple but unless you have the tools and expertise you are asking for trouble. In our Motorhome I got an oil change, oil filter, air filter and fuel filter done in the local garage in about an hour. The cost was very reasonable but more importantly peace of mind knowing it was done properly.
All garages were closed because of the virus. I have a dozen jobs l would love to be done in a garage but some of us have to watch every penny we spend, and as l said...they were closed.
Well done for having a go at it! Might have been a bit easier with an oil filter removal tool/strap wrench you can probably get online for a few quid. I can see why you were turning it that way, it almost looked like you were sort of trying to do it left handed. Hopefully problem now solved with your leak issue, a lot cheaper than a head gasket to fix.
Next time, please get one of those filter wrenches that fit snugly around filter with a handle and makes the job much easier; especially if you’re turning the correct direction 🤪 We all have to learn how to do things and if we don’t try, we don’t learn....good job😊 Stay safe and healthy 🌻

Usually the oil pan is emptied first and then the oil filter is removed, the pan is lower than the filter so should have been dropped first. Bare in mind I dont know anything about Hymers.
I have never replaced an oil filter, but is it not better to drain the oil before removing it, it seems to me much cleaner to work, you have to change the oil anyway.
I know it may seem like a waste of money to buy something you only use a few times, but a proper sized oil filter wrench can be worth its weight in gold sometimes.
Before resorting to the screwdriver -if you havnt got the right tool wrap your belt tightly round the filter to get grip and unscrew with your hand using the belt for leverage .Only problem is your trousers will fall down.
Dan , you should use the right tools to loosen the oil filter not to use the hammer and screw driver! If you cut or damage the thread of the engine block it may cost a lot to fix it. Besides you should understand to take out the filter by turning counterclockwise to put in the filter is clockwise !also you need to add a circle of engine oil around the rubber ring on the filter before screw it back to the engine. After done ,heat up the engine to make sure the oil level is correct or not!
Never known anyone to change only the oil filter without doing a complete oil change. Also, doing so is a good way to check the oil pan drain plug and make sure it's tight. It looks like your's may be leaking a bit. Thanks for the entertaining vlog.

Aren't there any garages open over in Ireland? Next time, it might be easier to pay a garage to get it done. Abt 28 to 38 US dollars here for oil change/filter. Big names charge more.
Garages just reopened today. For a motorhome like this it is about $180 for an oil and filter change. Its far more than a car.
@@TravelTrollsTV Whoa, baby, I would never have thought it'd be that much! Next time it will be a breeze for ya! (or take up a collection!)
Dan like most of us watching we were screeming at tv. However good effort dan I like the fact you gave it a go. Love a anyone that's has a go at somthing new. Easy for us that do this stuff all the time to critetsise but for some that have no mechanical KNOWHOW, it will not come easy. Good jo sir sort of lol.. love the vid

@@TravelTrollsTV Some English are wonderful too you know :)
Funniest utube in a long time. Thanks.
Bloody hell, I had to stop watching this! 😮 I did come back just to see what damage Dan had done. Luckily a competent man was on hand to save the engine. 😀
Well I've been in the motor trade for 35 years and I've never seen anything quite like that before, good try Dan
I to was screaming at the screen as soon as i noticed you was trying to turn the filter clockwise. You also should have taken the sump plug off and drained all the oil first. That would have given you a completely fresh oil change as well. Never mind we all make mistakes (That is how we all learn in life)
Never be embarrassed of making mistakes; sometimes that's how you learn! At least you gave it a shot
