  • Although it offers limited matching, the automatic tuner built in to the radio is nice and simple to use.

Thanks Tony for the great videos, I just got back from the Dayton Hamvention with a new FT-450D in my hands for the camper. 73's KD8SNM.

Hold the three buttons right of dsp button and turn on the rig. You then enter the service menu. Scroll to HF1 HiSwr and using the main tuning dial, dial the setting from 85 to 150. Do this for the HF2 and HF3 Hi SWR settings also. Then push the F button for one second. That's it. You now have a tuner that will tune up to 7:1 SWR.

Sorry to necropost a 3 year old comment but this is bad advice that no one should follow and the comment owner should delete it. You are not expanding the actual tuning capabilities of the internal tuner by changing these values. Yaesu did not intentionally handicap the internal tuner from the factory.

Thanks for the hint. I have been moderate and increased the three values to 130 each and I am happy with the result. May increase to 150 if I am not happy. Have you experienced or heard of any ill effects, yet?

On the menu there's an option called 'TUNER' and under that you can select 'INTRATU' to tune both transmit and receive.

Hi Tony...I have not be licensed all that long and have still to decide which HF rig to buy but I do like the FT 450D.
Question for you Tony...I like the idea of the built in ATU on the 450D...I wonder would you know if the built in ATU has a balanced input...as you can see I still have lots to learn.
The reason I ask is I would like to construct a Doublet type antenna and I believe it needs to run through a balanced input ATU
As well as amateur radio I see we have a common interest in general aviation...I to am a licensed pilot over here in the UK...flying what I think you guys call Ultralights..I have some videos on here.
I wonder how your flying is going.
Regards from Nick in the UK.

Hi Nick! Thanks for watching. This radio does not have balanced inputs. I honestly don't know of any that do- you will need to purchase or make a balun for that. As for the flying, it's going great! I've decided to continue to post my lesson videos on my personal channel so I don't crowd this one with non-ham material. Try searching for "Tony Milluzzi" on UA-cam to find my other channel.

How do you know what the SWR is at on the meter? Or did I miss it?

Would you mind demonstrating the swr reading while broadcasting a cw carrier?

I've recently bought one of these, but I find the RX audio terrible & muddy; the only way I've found to improve it is to turn the contour fully down to the left.
Out of the numerous rigs I own, the FT-450D is hands down the worst for receive audio.
Has anybody else noticed the same poor audio?

You don't have to live with the 3.0 swr limit. I changed the HF "Hi" swr setting from 3.0 up to a 7.0 swr. Works like a champ. Don't need an external tuner any more.

I've heard about this and it is interesting, but I wonder why that isn't the default. I'm concerned with the long term reliability of doing that.

It's bad advice and doesn't actually increase the capability of the tuner.

Do you think the LDG Electronics Z-100PLUS tuner is a good match for this rig?

    • @TonyKD8RTT
      @TonyKD8RTT  9 років тому +1

I have no personal experience with it, but it would probably work well. I actually just picked up the LDG YT-450 for cheap as I think they are discontinuing it. It works well and is easy to set up!

sorry Tony that was the worst presentation you always do a good job but you stumbled on your speech and you didn't really demonstrate that tuner and its full potential like people on a band talking in tune and off to the side and get a signal report sorry
