Jeez, I did not expect this to blow up as much as it did. I am so grateful that so many of you felt represented by this and enjoyed it. We started this production about a month ago for our church’s youth film fest. In the end, we spent a total of three weeks writing, shooting, and editing on a $50 budget. I definitely feel some imposter syndrome as the video’s gained popularity. With limited time, we filmed this within our own community and friend groups, so though the final product represented many East Asians, it definitely lacked the South Asian and Indian representation that the title warranted. My hope is to also represent these groups in my future projects, especially since Hollywood hasn’t. This video was very personal to me, as it was like a love letter to the Asian community that had raised me. Kids and parents aiming for success, Bible study groups, lots and lots of boba, and our struggles to maintain our conflicting cultural backgrounds were distinct in our identities. I’m so thankful for Lin-Manuel Miranda and Jon M Chu’s creation that reminds all immigrants to hang their flags up, proclaiming “we belong.”
Beautiful work! Great adaptation and honestly, what an insightful portrayal of how our stories, while from different countries, are so similar. Please Congratulate your team!!
For $50 this looks sick!! 🔥🔥🔥I feel so seen with this video we don’t see much like this in the popular media. Also I’d like to say thank you for promising to include a broader range of Asians for your next projects - I can’t wait to see them :). You deserve all the success of this video

what I really appreciated about in the heights is that every kind of immigrant can relate at a lot of the key principles. This is why this video works so well and also why the Asian director of Crazy Rich Asians decided to direct it. He pointed out that obviously he doesn’t have the same experiences but he can relate to the immigrant story and having his own “Abuela Claudia” (more like a Lao Yi lol)
I'm Mexican, but when I watched Crazy Rich Asians, I could totally relate to bringing home a partner of a different culture and having to deal with family expectation. (Oh and the fact that I'm crazy right too 😂😂 jk)
besides the fact that he is very colourist… (in both films pulling out as many excuses to deny that he casted lighter-skinned actors for their skin..) he is a vv good director and the way he directs shots in In The Heights is PERRRFECT
honestly i loved it so much especially the scene where abuela was singing my family are believers of santeria so when i saw the women and men dressed in white i was amazed
I am Latina, so obviously I dont actually relate to this version, but I think it's actually interesting how Asian experiences and Latinos experiences in the USA can relate one another even with cultures so different in a lot of aspects.
Hey I’m Latino, and I study the immigrant patterns of America as a hobby and Irish, Italians, Asians and Hispanics have all such interestingly similar yet different experiences it’s wild
@@WillVon Isn't the main thing that Asian Americans were eventually integrated by the government to keep alliance with China and Asia? The main reason why they're seen as so educated n shit.
@@fabledlight908 i'm no expert on history, but as far as i understand - the chinese exclusion act pretty much barred all immigration from china, and the eventual successors (Magnuson Act, Hart-Celler Act) held per-country immigration limits, with strong preference for professionals/skilled workers. If you only let a limited number of (east) asians into the country, and you only let educated professionals in, they'll be much more highly educated on average. education is certainly highly prized in many asian cultures, but the 'educated model minority' stereotypes in the US came about by artificially (legislatively?) induced means.

Your dedication to perfectly recreating every single shot is incredible! I’ve been obsessed with In The Heights since I saw it in June. I am Puerto Rican so it hit home with being raised in the United States while trying to live out the dreams and legacies of my ancestors. I have spent months learning every single word of this 7+ minute song. I even saw the movie twice. All that to say that I am beyond impressed with the work you all put in to honoring the film (even Usnavi’s moment of looking out the bodega window) and yet making it your own with your culture and language. Bravo 👏🏼👏🏼👏🏼 this was so dope. It deserves all the praise and recognition it gets.
YESS!! I love it!! Y'all did that remix "pho and rice" and patience and faith in chinese!! I love it!! You guys did so good. God is smiling down. I love how y'all added his word and focus. Asian American community deserves an in the heights. I think all races should have their own. I would love for y'all to do a film. Y'all should raise money.
I'm of Asian descent (Chinese, Indian, Guyanese, British, American before anyone asks it's a long mixed story going back to colonial days) grew up in NYC so Washington Heights means a lot to me but seeing this version makes me feel inspired to make a version(someday not soon) and grateful that it's not just Latinos or new yorkers it's everyone's immigrant story. Thank you my friend for sharing your version of the story
this was literally SO GOOD. the cinematography and music were top notch and as an asian american i almost cried watching this. it showed our stories so well.
I do musical theatre at my school, and I am the only Asian American doing it. This is just a masterpiece and I appreciate every little detail you pointed out. Thank you for this beautiful representation!
As a Mexican immigrant who cried at both the play and the movie I am so happy to watch this video. Its so beautiful and well crafted, and it shows our unity as so called "foreigners" in the united states. i love this so much. Congratulations!
It's crazy how much this version does justice to the play and what I imagined this song would look like in the movie (I haven't seen it yet) after hearing the track. I love love love how you all have managed to keep it relevant to the community and the lived experience of Chinese immigrants. As a fan of musicals, this was amazing to see unfold.
I'm from the Chi suburbs so when you said "Naperville" the first time I almost choked on my drink. Naperville Heights. I can't. :D You guys clearly had so much fun making this!
Please do more “In the Heights” songs! I’d suggest “Breathe”, “No Me Diga”, “96,000”, “Blackout”, “Paciencia y Fe”, or “Carnaval del Barrio” (but with different names for all the songs with Spanish titles)
Ok, brazilian latina here, this just WORKS. The decision to keep the names and the immigrant narratives just clicking is amazing but like the very reason Lynn Manuel Miranda has this name is apparently cause his dad adored a dude from Vietnam. AAPI community, keep fighting, you are glorious!
If Jon M Chu directs the next Crazy Rich Asians sequels (China Rich Girlfriend and Rich People Problems) he better hire these people for the new roles. They're all perfect for the Crazy Rich Asians sequels

As a Fifth generation Chinese American, and huge fan of ITH and musicals, this was very well done. Thank you! I struggled to get into Musical Theater. I didn't have the vocal range for Miss Saigon, but I knew I was going to get the part of Connie Wong in A Chorus Line...because I was the only Asian who auditioned. We need more AAPI musicals, and Allegiance is just the beginning. This was a great video and I appreciate your dedication to detail to get this shot for shot
I'm a Brazilian living in America and this has touched me hard, I'm in tears watching it. I guess it's how resounding Lin-Manuel Miranda's work is with so many similar yet wildly diverse experiences. Great job you guys!
"AAPI stories and actors are among the most underrepresented in Hollywood, with exceptions that are more harmful than constructive: we are a main character's smart sidekick, a fetish, a quirky foreigner, a virus." I thought I'd highlight this line from the description

youtube recommended did good today, watching all the way from Malaysia as a Malaysian-Taiwanese kid who grew up in England, this was so good. I hope you guys keep producing more stuff like this and improve your film making skills, there's so much potential here
I really loved that they did this! The concept behind the song works as well with representing Asian American's as it does with Latinos. I'm ngl, I wish they changed the lyrics a bit more and made it more original. There was so much opportunity and so much more that could've made this song more true to Asian culture. Regardless, the videography was really professional, and I could tell yall had fun! Hope you can do a remake someday, that would be cool.
I love this so much!! In the Heights could truly be rewritten to fit any immigrant group coming to America and that's so special. Plus, it's important for all us later generation Asian-Americans to remember our communities and what it took to get here. This video is so well directed and put together! Amazing what you can do with $50 and friends haha. Thanks for sharing this with us! I hope you continue your art!
Damn, I almost started tearing up at "everybody's pressed for success" and "what is life worth if I don't know where to go". The mental health struggle for AAPI is REAL.

Thank you my friend for sharing your version of the story
this was literally SO GOOD. the cinematography and music were top notch and as an asian american i almost cried watching this. it showed our stories so well.
...i can't even get my friends to watch the movie, ya guys straight up recreated it, HOOOOWWWWWWW
I do musical theatre at my school, and I am the only Asian American doing it. This is just a masterpiece and I appreciate every little detail you pointed out. Thank you for this beautiful representation!
I absolutely adored this version. The attention to detail is flawless. Big hugs from Colombia.
As a Mexican immigrant who cried at both the play and the movie I am so happy to watch this video. Its so beautiful and well crafted, and it shows our unity as so called "foreigners" in the united states. i love this so much. Congratulations!
THIS IS LITERALLY AWESOME ALSO THE GIRL WHO DID VANESSAS PART IS LITERALLY LEGENDARY
Okay but I loved the part with Vanessa when he said “ well your bobas on the house”
THIS IS AWESOME! I LOVE IT.
Indeed.
Omg hi lol
I'm from the Chi suburbs so when you said "Naperville" the first time I almost choked on my drink. Naperville Heights. I can't. :D You guys clearly had so much fun making this!
GREAT choice of actor for Mr. Takahashi, he can really sing and feels so natural in this scene. Great work!
Please do more “In the Heights” songs! I’d suggest “Breathe”, “No Me Diga”, “96,000”, “Blackout”, “Paciencia y Fe”, or “Carnaval del Barrio” (but with different names for all the songs with Spanish titles)
The store replaced as boba is such an idea! You guys totally rocked💫, way to go!!
I memorised your lyrics and now I sing whenever I'm rinsing the rice.
Vanessa is so adorable in this I can’t.
no u
this has real old school youtube vibes to it makes me so happy!
I didn’t expect this to be such a masterpiece
Ok, brazilian latina here, this just WORKS. The decision to keep the names and the immigrant narratives just clicking is amazing but like the very reason Lynn Manuel Miranda has this name is apparently cause his dad adored a dude from Vietnam. AAPI community, keep fighting, you are glorious!
If Jon M Chu directs the next Crazy Rich Asians sequels (China Rich Girlfriend and Rich People Problems) he better hire these people for the new roles. They're all perfect for the Crazy Rich Asians sequels
Was not expecting the sushi shop owner to have such a sweet voice
Usnavi in Washington heights: why does it feel like someone is singing the same song I am but in different way
lin manuel miranda has gOT TO SEE THIS!!! this is so good 🥺✨❤️ as a fellow asian; sending so much love and a big thank yall for this!🙇🏻♀️✨ bless up!!! ✨
This shit is straight fire I’m not even gonna lie
Bro can ya’ll do a the whole movie? I’m invested
As an Asian-American (Korean) and a fan of In The Heights, this is really nice! I loved it!
Ok, but the girl playing Vanessa was so good!
This actually slaps SO hard, looking forward to the content you make going forward!
fingers crossed for this blowing up
Very creative. I would definitely watch a full production. But I would change up the beauty salon trinity. Those three should be absolute icons of fast fashion and super on-top of beauty trends.
I don't know why, but that "Fre shavaca do" thing never fails to make me laugh. How long has it been?
Half way I was like, “ are they from around Chicago?” And sure enough it’s Naperville 😂
Great job. If we get the full length musical, we definitely need to stage one of the scenes in an afterschool tutoring center.
So much talent so close to where I live! Hi from Oak Lawn!!!!
Ok esto es simplemente GENIAL, debió haberles tomado mucho tiempo adecuar la letra y organizar todo, me encanta las referencias están muy bien hechas, rayos ahora quiero una versión de "In The Heights" asiática
Me too! :D
No ve?!!
"AAPI stories and actors are among the most underrepresented in Hollywood, with exceptions that are more harmful than constructive: we are a main character's smart sidekick, a fetish, a quirky foreigner, a virus." I thought I'd highlight this line from the description
I disagree.
What about Glen?
This incredible. I can’t imagine the time this took. Y’all recreated Hollywood camera direction. Like brah.
Two weeks.
@@DanielZhangyeet that’s a lot of dedication great work man
7:20 "but as for you besto friendo" 😭 we love toudou
I’m telling my kids this is the real In the Heights
Please do
@El Chubacabra [Insert Tropic Thunder Clip] “You people? What do *you* mean, YOU people” 💀😂
@El Chubacabra oof the out of pocket aggressiveness has me wheeziiiiing 😂💀💀
@El Chubacabra loooooool but dude, who is “y’all”, and why are you so bothered 😂
@El Chubacabra this line of comments is giving me all the Areva Martin x David Webb interview vibes, acting so goofy in the comments fr 🤡🥴
holy shit ! as an Asian music theatre performer I love this 😍😍😍
this is so cool !! it’s clear that u put a lot of time & energy into this, & it’s worth it ! i was singing along & vibing by the end :) also, special shout-out to the person playing vanessa !! her voice is amazing !!
I give this guy credit. Production was fantastic, especially for a relatively small team. Keep doing what you’re doing man! :)
As an Asian, I don't think I can live without milk tea
As a fellow asian im more coffee guy
Loved this…played because my phone is on Auto play…stayed because it was really good
I was expecting a random parody like always but, this is the best Asian cover of something that I have ever seen!! it is so talented and I a so in love!! Asian culture is amazing! :))))
I love that you filmed this in Naperville!
youtube recommended did good today, watching all the way from Malaysia as a Malaysian-Taiwanese kid who grew up in England, this was so good. I hope you guys keep producing more stuff like this and improve your film making skills, there's so much potential here
I have no idea how this arrived in my suggestions, but I'm so glad it did, and that so many others have watched. So good.
As a Hispanic obsessed with in the Heights: this is fantastic!
This was so much fun!!! Thank you for sharing the love =]
As an Indian American- this is EVERYTHING!! I was thinking I wish there was an Asian version of in the heights. Genuinely thank you so much.
Someone needs to show this to Lin Manuel Miranda’s’ Twitter!
I don’t got Twitter, can y’all help me with that
@@DanielZhangyeet im gonna download twitter for this
John M. Chu just tweeted this.
Watching this after reading Jon M. Chu's tweet! This is really cool! And oh, Lin liked Jon's tweet so he's probably seen this, too!
@@e.7896 that's what brought me here💜
haven’t watched in the heights yet but damn .. I’d pay to watch a whole movie of asian in the heights - that’s for sure!
THE QUALITY OF THE PRODUCTION AND THE SINGERS WERE ALL INSANE SHEEESHH
I am a big Lin-Manuel fan and I teach English to children in China online, so I adore this! Well done! Thank you.
I MEAN -- I WOULD PAY TO SEE THIS PRODUCTION! This masterpiece is fire!!!
The algorithm brought me here and I’m so happy it did !! 💕💕💕
I loved this, and wanted to give a HUGE thanks for putting subtitles on this video! Myself and others who cannot hear as well still like to enjoy good music, and this definitely fits the bill.
4:50 the vine reference I never knew I needed
This vid has been in my recommended all week and I have finally been able to watch it and I regret nothing as a fan of the original this is so good great work
I live just south of Washington Heights, and my favorite bubble tea shop is right on my block. From now on, I'm going to sing "I buy my boba and I go..." every time I walk by! :)
i legit thought this is just using the voice of the original intro but god you all sang it all, good job you all, made me a chinese asian proud
I LOVE IT!!! THANK YOU UA-cam FOR RECOMMENDING THIS GEM
Damn. This is amazing! Awesome job! Also, "Vanessa" has some chops on her! Definitely talented cast and crew!
I just found this video after watching the movie weeks ago in the theater.
Great work! Very entertaining!
Subscribed! 👍😎
Daniel this is FANTASTIC!!??!? Congrats!!!!?? I cannot believe how much work y’all must have put into this-it must have been so much, and it shows. The production quality is amazing and your lyrics & performance is perfect.
This was so amazing! 36 year old, 2nd gen immigrant tearing up over here in Vancouver sending love. Keep creating! So much talent on display, both in front and behind the lens!!
This is probably one of the best videos/musicals done on UA-cam that’s made me both laugh out loud and happy at the same time.
Asian-American here, I cried at this. Thank you
