  • Join us on August 30, 2024, from 11:00 AM for a session "All you need to know about DAC, from technology to socioeconomics and everything in between", hosted by Professor Dawid Hanak. This event will feature Dr. Mijndert Van der Spek, Associate Professor at Heriot-Watt University
Dr Van der Spek will provide a comprehensive overview of Direct Air Capture (DAC) technology, covering its technical aspects, socioeconomic implications, and everything in between. This review is part of the ‘Ecosystem of systematic reviews on carbon dioxide removal', led by the Mercator Institute on Global Commons and Climate Change in Berlin, Germany. This review series aims to summarise the complete body of peer reviewed literature on carbon dioxide removal pathways, to elicit the current state of the art. The reviews follow a similar, systematic reviewing protocol, including a review of the literature landscape, technologies, systems, and their performance, economics and costs, life cycle environmental performance, geospatial performance differences, socioeconomics, monitoring, reporting, and verification (MRV), and upscaling and integration into the wider economy.
    About the speaker
Dr Mijndert van der Spek joined Heriot Watt University in July 2019. He is trained as an energy systems engineer and policy analyst at Delft University of Technology where he completed his MSc in 2009. After that, he joined Royal Dutch Shell in the Netherlands, working first in the supply chain optimization team of Shell Chemicals Europe and after as process technologist at the polyols plant of Shell Pernis Refinery. He pursued his PhD studies at the Copernicus Institute of Sustainable Development, where his research focused on techno-economic and environmental analysis of CCS and CCU technologies, under the supervision of Andrea Ramirez and André Faaij. Subsequently, he worked as postdoctoral researcher at the Separation Processes Laboratory of ETH Zürich with Marco Mazzotti, on CCS process design as well as CCUS system analysis.
