As someone with ADHD, I can tell you all at least that it can be very a life-impeding disorder (as I learned when I went to jail), but by the grace of God I can still be used for His glory. Even when my mind won’t focus, I can know that He is immutable, unchanging, and always there as the rock of my salvation! To God be the glory forever and ever amen

You do have a problem with over-diagnosis and over-medication in USA, but ADHD DOES exist, it is NOT just disobedient children - this is a case of the straw man - thankfully in UK we have proper controls on diagnosis and treatment, which only sometimes involves methylphenidate, more often CBT.

It’s not just kids who have adhd but some of us adults as well. I’m a born again Christian and have been blessed with this upgrade. (I call it an upgrade as we more often think outside the box than ‘ordinary’ folk). Adhd brings me a lot of stress which leads to anger and medication along with my quiet time with God keeps me calm.

Add, adhd, dyslexia, dyspraxia, dysgraphia, auditory processing delay etc are all processing differences within the brain. They have some connecting simialarities but most of these “disorders” are really just the fact that the individual’s brain works differently than the run of the mill brain. Like being left handed or someone who is particularly artistic or mathematical. There is no standard brain and there are degrees of variation. With these processing differences which can be measured actually on cognitive tests rather than imaging tests, we can see that the working memory of some people gets overloaded and over stimulated and thus fatigued when learning new things. However these same brain variations provide the individual with unique ways to problem solve or think outside the box. Some people find medication helps them to live within societal norms particularly in a school setting however in the classrooms I’ve worked in we find wobbly stalls, squishy toys and fidget toys and exercise equipment can help children to keep their busy bodies settled to manage the expectation of staying put and listening. I am sorry that some people tell you it doesn’t exist. It does and it isn’t useful to ignore the reality. On the other hand some parents do lack good parenting skills and misbehaviour for the non adhd affected child would be better addressed by reeducating parents rather than those children being given medication they do not really require. I have children of my own now grown who have processing differences so I have seen the damage ignorance does. God created you to be you and he has a purpose for your life.

I was diagnosed with ADHD about a year ago, I was raised in a very positive and loving environment, with incredible parents who have raised me to be a compassionate, determined, understanding, god-fearing Individual who strives to be the best I can be in everything I do. I am a student who has struggled with anxiety, self-hate, body dysmorphia, depression, and severe social trauma that has caused me to mask, not only hiding my symptoms but also hiding my personality. After my diagnosis, I began to learn about ADHD and the way it has affected me and will continue to throughout my life. I've found validation in knowing that I'm not alone in my struggles, and I've finally learned to love myself. I now know that God gave me ADHD for a purpose, that I'm not a mistake, that I'm not a nuisance, that I am the way I am for a reason. Through that, I have learned to work WITH my disorder and overcome it bit by bit, instead of hating myself. We do have a problem with over-diagnosis and over-medication in the USA, but ADHD is a real thing that real people experience, it is NOT just disobedient children and It's NOT children who were raised in a rough environment. I do believe that the preachers' intentions were not to say that ADHD is not real, but more toward the Idea that ADHD is often used as an excuse for parents to improperly medicate their children. I Instead think that the person who posted this video twisted his words by just showing this part, and twisted our impression of them by showing this to us through the topic of the title. Nevertheless, The fact that there are people who do hold the belief that ADHD and similar disorders are not real is incredibly hurtful, disrespectful, and ignorant. I hope that in the future people will be more considerate with the opinions they make and take the time to ensure they fully understand something like this before preaching it to potentially an entire internet platform. I hope you are all doing well and know that you are loved.

The answer is always Jesus. Brother MacArthur is doing the most loving thing he could possibly do by pointing you to Christ! Didn't Jesus tell us in this life we will have trouble? But take heart! He has overcome the world!
We are all suffering from the fall. All creation is groaning. The answer is still clear, Jesus. Take up your cross and follow Him!
By the way, the Church is to be influential upon the culture, not the other way around. Once you see things similar to the world entering the Church, such as psychology for example, it must be examined against the Word of God and tossed out immediately upon failure to stand up.

Sir, I may agree that medication can be over used. But, I have had ADHD before it was even known what it really was. Don’t know if there were medications 60 years for ADHD, but since you don’t have ADHD you really need to be aware that it is real, saying something that it isn’t doesn’t mean that it isn’t. You are saying things that you are just pulling out of the air or making assumptions that you really don’t know. Now for me I have had to deal with ADHD my entire life. They kept me back in the 2nd grade because I couldn’t stay focused. I had a hard time in school and college. I did graduate but it was hard. But at the end of the day I praise God that I was able to use my ADHD for me, I found a career for 34 years that I was very successful at, very. Why because I could stay focused because I loved my job. I Agee with you that there are some abuses but unlike you Sir, I have learned not to paint all the people with the same paint brush. ADHD is a mental illness, and for you to try to say or put everyone in the same category is ashamed. It is hard enough for people to admit it’s a mental illness, in fact sir, having a mental illness is not leprosy. Now I know you were talking about kids and parent but, ADHD says with you. I have learned to live with it. I pray for abusers Sir? But I am also praying for people that listen to you who need help, but they are right on the border to see a doctor for them or their child but now are not going. I can only speak for myself Sir, one of the reasons I had a hard time in school was yes focus, but I tried so hard. Even till this day, I would have to read things over two, three, four and yes five times over to get an understanding. It has been difficult very difficult and for you to say ADHD isn’t real well, I don’t get mad because I am so use to people saying things that they don’t know what they are talking about, it’s laughable Sir, but can be heartbreaking. Again, I wasn’t on medication 60 years ago, and ADHD is real. One has to watch out that is reading an article to know they are just reading an article, without thinking what they well as you have said. Listen Sir fir every article you read there are numerous other articles that disagree with you. I don’t know why you even spoke on this. Now, if you were to talk about abuses and that schools need to be better educated on ADHD and medication as well as making parents aware of the abuses I would agree on that part, but I can’t stress enough let the the professionals handle it, parents to get second and third opinions, but not from you.
You are a very well educated Bible teacher and preacher. I do suggest if ADHD is an interest for you to research more and more and more. Reading as little as you did on ADHD is like when this well known preacher got in front of his congregation by starting off that, “COVID is a lie.” This pastor went on to say that the CDC said the number of deaths is wrong. Well don’t know why this was said from the pulpit, because the CDC had to make a serious correction I what they said was wrong. Here’s the point I don’t know what the CDC said was right or wrong. But, by saying COVID was a lie wasn’t even said by the CDC. Telling people ADHD is not real is not correct either. So, think about it, you could have prohibited people from getting professional help with ADHD and by telling people COVID is a lie, I just wonder how many people will not get tested or get a vaccine. Now don’t get me wrong getting a vaccine is personal. Just take into construction that kids that grow up to be an adult can have ADHD. And Sir please understand as a preacher you cannot be right all the time, and with this subject I am not angry with you, but please Sir just know,
“I don’t have brain damage or have I had a brain injury. And Sir understand it can be hereditary, you are looking at father or mother but aunts and uncles can apply here, how do I know - been my life for 60 years.

I do not think super young children should be on it without learning the alternatives first (I understand pills don't teach skills). Some kids are just not able to handle the side effects. The area of Mental Health is the ONLY area that I have great disagreement with my beloved Pastor. While some might be inclined to toss out the baby with the bath water I refused to do this. I’ve been going to GCC for the last 30 years since I got saved but those early years being exposed to this part of his teaching created a deep sense of despair and lack of assurance in my heart until I was able to learn more about my illness and the underlying biological factors that have predisposed me to such a horrendous illness. It’s been well researched and documented that while certain conditions, illnesses and pathologies don’t have any specific test that will provide a concrete diagnosis there is a very distinct set of criteria that has to be met to conclude where one’s diagnosis fall under. Example: PANS/PANDAS is a pediatric onset of disabling symptoms that is precipitated by a Strep Infection and some children are vulnerable to developing PANS/PANDAS which is a neurological inflammatory autoimmune response that attacks the Basal Ganglia and literally overnight the child or adolescent (even some adults) will instantly present with severe psychiatric symptoms, psychosis, absence seizures, encropesis, hand writing changes, tiks, school refusal, developmental regression, severe OCD and anxiety, anger outbursts and bed wetting all overnight! This is what happened to my son at age 9 and it’s been 7 years later and I’m still trying to get him back. Autism also has a plethora of classic symptoms, ADHD, Perseverating, Psychiatric symptoms, sensory issues, behavioral challenges hence why ABA was created which works for some and not for others, developmental delays, fixations- OCD of various types, and yes we do have brain imaging available but it’s not covered by insurance and costs upwards 3k or more to have it done!! Also for those afflicted with TRD - treatment resistant depression and refractory cases of mental illness…neuro inflammation is present, MTHFR gene mutations are present, inability to absorb folate is standard, and other underlying infections caused by Mold Illnesses and parasitic infections are also involved at the root of this agonizing and life threatening illness. And then you have the brain injured who have been exposed to traumatic experiences. Some might have had a single intense and severe traumatic experience and their neurological circuitry was severely impacted. Then you have life long victims of narcissistic abuse who suffered from daily assaults that put the brain and one’s central nervous system in high gear where the Amygdala becomes enlarged and one with this condition has a brain firing as if threat is present in every situation which is where we get the phenomenon of Fight Flight Fawn or Freeze. Cortisol and adrenaline are also disregulated and its circadian rhythms are highly dysfunctional do to C-PTSD or PTSD. There is so much more than meets the eye when it comes to mental health issues and to say that they are spiritual in ORIGIN or a result of an unregenerate or disobedient heart is a form of ignorance that this day and age is completely unacceptable especially in the Church!!!!

We are strong believing family and faith is the best "medicine", but I will give my children drugbased medicine as soon as I see it will help them accomplish their dreams because I too know that the negative effects of ADHD are real and can destroy dreams. Off course there are positives too. God couldnt do without us. We are needed for our courage, our go, and our kreativity. But as I said, a child with ADHD needs parents that are educated and that will help them by providing what they need, loving discipline. No punishments, since ADHDers don't learn from punishment due to the risk-taking and looking for danger dey don't avoid punishment, but with natural concequenses and faith in the childrens good will and in the family connection, since they are the most loving and honoust people on the earth if you trust them.

I tried public school, 2 private Christian schools and even sat w him for 3 years s trying to keep him focused and on tasked. It wore me totally out. I love John and his theology, but you have never sat down and had a conversation with an adult who has Adhd. I do not believe it is an illness and I do not believe many many kids should be taking drugs for it... But over diagnosis and starting medication too early is a different issue. I have both pros and cons to having Adhd...God didn't design a single way of thinking and learning... Different people have different brains and some are well suited for a traditional educational system... Some are not. My parents spanked me and raised me by the standards of Christian home... I did not do well in school and have self taught advanced mathematics, computer science and physics. I can explain Quantum mechanical theories and didn't go to college. I take Adderall because with it I can read books... Without it it takes forever and I can't tell you much of what I have read after. With it, I read and absorb information at a normal pace. I would thrive in a purely lecture type environment... Hearing and doing things... I learn no problem.... Read it without Adderall and it is fruitless and frustrating. You condemn all of it because you read an article that highlights some flaws. You can and should do better. Or maybe you could stick to theological topics that don't require you to make sweeping medical assumptions.

I respect John, and see he has some good points. But I think its prideful to think you've figured it all out and can put one cause to ADHD.
I have many weaknesses but teaching my son self control I dont feel is one of the. If anything I'm constantly being told I'm too stink or expect too much, or my parenting style is old fashioned. And yet I have a boy who can not sit still, concentrate, follow the simplest of task. A boy who does his best but still struggles to pay attention.
He has been diagnosed with ADHD, but for as long as hes in my home he will not touch any pharmaceutical drugs.
So it's not just lack of self control, though that is a fruit we pray God will grow in him. It's not anyone not paying attention to his needs. As parents and teachers we have put many hrs of attention, prayer and money devoted to helping him with his diagnosis. And it's not looking for a quick fix of drugs to sort it out.
ADHD was just a word we could give to people to explain why we need help, support and to help them understand that it's not that hes not trying, hes just fighting against something that those who's brains work differently find easy

ADHD and it's seven different type can actually be clearly seen in what is called a SPECT scan. I have it but didn't even realise until I went to college at 32. I was diagnosed in 2013 by my neuropsychologist (I also have MS) then at the start of 2014 by a junior psychiatrist and a couple of months later by a psychiatrist well established in our local psychiatric hospital. I wasn't going to take medication for it because I try to avoid meds and only take when absolutely necessary (I try to take the diet and exercise route) but my life and house are a mess and I make stupid mistakes in my driving lessons without it so I started on the lowest dose of Ritalin because I was worried about a reaction with my MS. Wow, I was motivated and able to focus and get things done and get this.. it is the ONLY thing that helps me sleep and regulates my sleep pattern. I've seen myself going to sleep at 9 in the morning!

I set plans that I am so certain I can do, then I end up not doing it because I don't have the motivation. I have both parents with ADHD, and a sister who has ADHD. Both my biological parents were drug addicts and I've had many traumatic brain injuries, I was a victim of rape, Ive been treated for PTSD and Depression. I've had suicidal thoughts and more. If I don't take my meds I fail school, I overspend, and I act wildly. I agree with most of the things he said here, but ADHD does exist, and It has RUINED MY LIFE. I am a God loving Christian, (I am currently going to a Christian College). My adopted parents had to drill self control in me for the 7 years I lived with them. I did well when I was being disciplined by someone else, but the moment they gave me the ability to self control I stayed up until 3-4am watching UA-cam videos. I started failing classes, I started wasting money ect. My adopted parents were good parents, but it still didn't help.

I was saved 15 yrs beforehand and my daughter was murdered by her husband. The children did grow up in a horrible home. I heard a message by Pastor MacArthur on ADHD and told my grandson & he and I developed a silent sign I could give him to calm down when we were in public. Sadly, when he left our home at 18 yrs old he became a drug addict. I don't even know where he is. But for the remaining 7 yrs I home schooled both kids and we did the best we could. I came from a very strong Christian Family and a well disciplined family at that. Im not exactly sure where he Got this study on the internet. But Typical MacArthur “I found this, im Educated, believed me.” Is normally how his “research goes.
I have found it to be quite the opposite. The ADHD seems to actually be a common thing around the world not just the United States. While yes there is an over diagnosis and i do believe yes people will act like they have some of the problems to get on the meds or Parents opt for the meds...but for the people who really have ADHD this is a real condition.
I honestly think of it as a different mindset and personality. Like the Conventional mindset and Unconventional mindset.
Obviously he has never experienced anything an ADHDer goes through every day and that is fine. But he would be smart to take a deeper look into it and actually talk to someone who has been “Extensively Diagnosed” with it. Even a Christian with ADHD. And understand that it is also a massive Gift that can be used to advance the Kingdom.

I have learning disabilities, I was called stupid by teachers all the time because I couldn't finish the work, this was a reason I didn't graduate middle school, and I almost not graduated high school, but thank God I did, some teachers where compassionate enough to pass me, they knew I just couldn't learn some subjects, and counselor also made sure I graduated, all thanks to God. School has always been a struggle for me, I've been in Junior College for almost 7 years, and and thanks to the Disability services at College, I don't have to worry about rushing to get that Associates Degree. But by the grace of God, I find it natural to be able to do things for his kingdom, like play music, and teach the youth. I know I'm not perfect, I believe Jesus Christ is the only way to be saved, not by works, but that our works be manifested to testify, and reveal how amazing God's power through the Holy Spirit is. I've been suicidal in the past, even being a Christian because of my environment, but even if I get tired of life, God gives me hope to wait a little longer more, knowing he is coming back. Jesus Christ gave me hope, and He may take my life when He desires too. I believe and desire that He many take me while in prayer, being in His presence. I have many desires and dreams, such as marriage and a great job, but if God takes me tomorrow or any other time, it will be better than any dream in this world.

Avoiding Direct Helpful Discipline. I believe that if I'd grown up a decade later than I did, had been raised in a different area, and/or had been born to different parents who were willing to accept excuses for me, I would have been diagnosed with ADHD. I had the worst time paying attention throughout much of school. Countless times any one of my teachers would give an assignment, and I had no idea what the assignment was because as soon as she started talking, I was on another planet. Thankfully, I was raised to know that there were consequences behind not performing well based on lack of attentiveness. I also understood, as a young kid, that failure to listen was an act (or lack of one) and not a condition--I didn't accept the modern idea of that just being who I was or how I was. Lastly, I was stubborn, and having two older brothers who performed very well in school, I wanted to do as well as them or better.
So, as an elementary school kid, with no prompt or coaching from any adult, I committed to forcing myself to being more attentive in school and not daydreaming through half the day or letting other less important things "steal" my attention. (I don't mention the no adult help out of arrogance but to affirm that young kids understand personal responsibility when you don't allow them to get away with excuses. Ultimately, I credit God's grace for whatever success I had in this.) It wasn't easy at first. I was constantly checking myself throughout the day as I'd catch myself being drifting when my teacher was speaking. But I stuck with it, and lo and behold, it became a lot easier. And really, it seemed like it became so much easier overnight. It didn't take very long to improve, but it was a leaky tire kind of thing. Throughout my childhood I'd find myself falling back into my old ways and have to again work on forcing myself to be attentive in class.
I might've not ever thought much about all of this again, but I remember that this discussion topic came up in a high school class once, and I've thought back to this from time to time over the years. At some point in the discussion, the teacher asked if any of us students had trouble with inattentiveness. I said that I do/have. She asked how I've dealt with it, and not expecting it to be the right answer, I just honestly said that I constantly remind myself to refocus. And the way she immediately responded--not emphatically but immediately, repeating my response as she nodded--affirmed to me that that is the correct and perhaps only way to deal with it.
I encourage people to read George Crabb's Diagnostic and Spiritual Manual (DSM) Books 1 and 2. He has a chapter on ADD/ADHD.

I too believe there is a condition that requires medical help and is not because I am a bad parent that does not know how to discipline his child. I SEE the conflict in my sons eyes when I try to engage him in his behavior, IT'S REAL, by the way I do discipline my son. One of my sons is diagnosed mild MR, ADHD. without the meds he is uncontrollable and non responsive to pain. The meds make a huge difference. The scenario you present I believe exists but there is a section of them that has a real problem. This universe is decaying and I don't find it hard to believe that this condition exists. SPANKING THIS CHILD does nothing , completely unresponsive to it. You cannot put a blanket on this and tell me I don't discipline my child therefore he is out of control.

Being a John MacArthur fan, I admit that I was very disappointed to hear him preach this message. Before I was a parent, I too believed that ADHD was a farce. When my wife and I adopted our children, I quickly realized how wrong I was. I saw things through my own eyes and not through my children's. When Pastor MacArthur alludes to parents being eager to turn their children into drug addicts, he couldn't be further from the truth. When our daughter was diagnosed with ADHD, my wife and I were in denial. What parents want their children to be dependent on medication? What Pastor MacArthur fails to understand is that kids with this "real" condition not only suffer attention deficit issues, but when not properly treated or when the parents are in denial and refuse to address the issue, the children lose out socially, academically, and their confidence falters. When you deal with special needs children that have conditions such as Asbergers, discipline such as spanking absolutely doesn't work. I was raised in a home where the belt was used and while it worked for me, you cannot take a one approach works for all when it comes to raising special needs children. My wife and I "adopted" two special needs children and it has been a lonely journey simply because people don't understand what we go through except those who have gone through a similar journey themselves. My wife and I could have lived our lives filled with luxury but instead we chose to rescue one child from an orphanage and the other from the horrible foster care system. Dealing with our children has been sacrificial but in so doing we've given our children a good home and a promising future. Ironically, God has taught us more about our own shortcomings through our children and we've learned the true meaning of unconditional love. The church should be a place for our brothers and sisters in Christ to be able to come before each other where we build each other up share one another's burdens. Sadly, listening to sermons like this cast parents with ADHD children as demons who want to turn their children into drug addicts. Don't cast stones on others especially if you have not walked through their storm. Messages like this tear down Christian parents who have an already difficult battle on their hands.

No. They are reprimanded for neglecting their care. Likewise adhd can last throughout your whole life and can get WORSE without medication. Leading to actual drug addiction, in the pursuit to manage their symptoms and depression from unmanaged adhd. Adderall is 1000 times weaker than meth. It is given in controlled doses and in even weaker, more prolonged doses with the extended release. They have proven with countless studies proving the safety and efficacy of adhd medication. This man is obviously an adult with undiagnosed adhd living in denial and abusing his own fear and confusion of the topic.

Not only is ADD/ADHD real, but it runs in our family on both sides. Most of my family members who have ADD were diagnosed as ADULTS. So much for drugging the children in place of parenting them. We went through years of therapy with our daughter. One of the therapists said that she'd never counseled a family with so much love in it. Btw, our daughter is a good Christian adult now. She doesn't 'party' or use substances. She never ran away or did anything that troubled teens do. I give God all the credit for that.

Harl Mctrusty Do some research before you go around spewing hateful nonsense. ADHD *is* scientific. It has been studied for *over a hundred years* what's more there is scientific prove of it's existence in the brain because people who have it literally have brains that develop at a different rate than other people and you can see this in a brain scan. You can also see that their brain responds to stimulation differently than other people's brains. Exactly where do you get that this is "non scientific"?! This is *the most well reaserched mental health illness in the history of humanity!!* We know so much about ADHD it's ridiculous that *anyone* would think it's not real. We know how it affects the brain, we understand the types of hormones that are affected, we know very well what type of medicine to use. And on top of everything we *know* that it is genetic. Scientists have found several Gene Mutations that seem to be responsible for causing ADHD. Sadly we don't know enough about Genetics yet to be sure if those are all of the genes that affect the condition or if there are more. But Genetic studies have found conclusive proof that people with ADHD have mutations in at least a couple of those genes everytime. Do some google searching before you get angry and start spouting nonsense.

They do stuff that people would consider laziness or attention-seeking behavior because they sit down to do their homework or schoolwork and can't comprehend the words on the page because there is a psychological difference in their frontal lobe that makes their brain not easily focus on things that they are not interested in. So they can hyperfocus on things that they are interested in, such as video games and drawing and even eating or listening to music. Some people have the hyperactive side where they get up and run around and others are not on that side of the spectrum. And ADHD is genetic, just like other chronic diseases. And it is being misdiagnosed in many cases, there is no doubt. But a good psychiatrist can determine whether or not it is really ADHD and will ask questions about abusive parents and home life and all of these other factors. And I have severe ADHD and I have the most caring parents you could ever imagine. It is a real disorder for some people and if anyone, especially a child is suspected to have ADHD, please take them to a psychiatrist and preferably one specializing in ADHD to find out the real issue, because without any medicine or therapy, I know that many intelligent people with ADHD, including me, would fail in school and be living in a box on the side of the road when they could have become a very successful person.

My son has ADHD but we never used meds. I kept him active and in church and AWANA's and although he was a hand full, I didn't want to drug my son. ADHD is just as real as Autism. When I was getting my son tested I commented that I did the same things that my son did. Foothills Acadamy tested me and sure enough, I had ADHD as well, which would explain a lot about why I struggled so much in school. Both my son and I have struggled socially and it's tough trying to fit in. The training my son got at the F. A. Learning Centre on how to approach problems and resolve problems was very helpful. Unfortunately, people who don't believe in ADHD and makes fun of people like us can drive a person to suicide. My X husband would tell both my son and I that we were retarded. Unfortunately, this only made him hide his pain and not want to go to school even more. Having ditched the lousy husband I have worked hard trying to keep my son on the straight path. He finished High School and have done a lot of amazing things over the years and so have I. It doesn't take drugs it takes a concerted effort and a willingness to try new things even though it's hard. I can't say I agree with Dr. John MacAuthor's take on this subject as he tends to be pretty black and white anyways. Maybe he needs a Granddaughter or Great Grandson who has this problem to make him rethink his position. Blessings!

I agree to Dr. John Mcarthur.! Disciple is a key., and parental good guidance, which means parental support. As i can see your husband has some problem and thats why its added to the situation. As a bible says, father/ or parents dont provoke ur children to wrath or anger but bring them up to abmonition of the Lord Ephesians 6:4. I know its very challenging to the parents. I think also its clearly explain that children needs unconditional love or support feom the parents. I can say that ur son feels discourage as he constantly heard his dad saying about u and him being retarded,. And thats is feeling down. So in response child become more so called uncontrolled behavioir, because je wants to displayed angry, attention or bitterness towards the father or parents in a sense so called rebellious attitude. Like John mc arthur said, children in most cases like that,. Im one of them. But it just that the parenta dont give up disciplining and teach thr word of God about proper attitude., until you grown up and understand things in life.

Isn’t John MacArthur the one that caused a young man to commit suicide because he was depressed and MacArthur told him he just needed to have more faith and not see a psychiatrist. I admit ADD and ADHD is sometimes over diagnosed but one reason for that is because instead of parents taking their children to a trained psychiatrist that specializes in psychiatric medicine they just take them to a family doctor and I know it does exist in adults also. I myself suffer from OCD and believe me it is a very real disease.
John says there’s no need for psychiatrist or psychiatrist but chemical imbalances in the brain does exist. The brain can get sick just like your throat or stomach does. Also if your thyroid is affected it can cause severe depression. Plus what about people that were sexually abused as a child or a woman who’s been raped don’t they need somebody that deals with those kind of things on a regular basis and are trained to do so.
There are several Psychiatrists and psychologists that are Christians and I know the Bible and God is our resource but sometimes we need people that know what their doing to guide us along. God understands that and there are people that are God gifted in doing that. There’s New Life out of Dallas Texas that helps people with mental issues and there use to be RAPHA that was founded by Robert S.McGee the author of search for significance that was endorsed by Billy Graham, Charles Stanley and others and also the late Frank Minrith and Paul Meier who were and are two very Godly men that was and are psychiatrist.
John has no business talking about something he knows nothing about. He almost makes me think of a milder version of Jim Jones or Kenneth Copeland.
If God created the medicine and gifted people to council you then refusing it could be the difference between life and death.

thing I notice and respect about him-giving Jesus all the glory, is he is a very mature person. I thought when I was young, growing up, that this is how all adults will automatically be, man, was I in for a horrid surprise. When I fully comprehended the way this pathetic world and people are, suicide surely ran through my head, thinking, if this is life, and the way people are, I want no part of it, I don't want to live/exist in such a pathetic world, around such pathetic people,...........but I was already born again in Jesus, when this happened, and the value of life in him far exceeds any other kind of life, which is no life, apart from him.......I know God is in full control of me through Jesus, so I think for me to kill myself, it would have to be God's will and doing, and so far hasn't been. When God, through his Spirit teaches you that he alone is in control of all things - including YOU, his born again child in Jesus, it totally purges you of all things regarding SELF. As scripture says in Galatians 2:20 'I am crucified with Christ: nevertheless I live; yet not I, but Christ liveth in me: and the life which I now live in the flesh I live by the faith of the Son of God, who loved me, and gave himself for me.' So clearly Jesus lives in and through me, I don't live unto myself, for I am dead, and my life is hid with Christ in God. For all those born again in Jesus, Jesus lives in and through us, making us who we should be in him, as he is the potter and we are the clay. So before the foundation of the world(Ephesians chapter 1), God the Father knew all those he would save through Jesus, knew it had to be this way, because of our sin we could never live a life pleasing to him apart from Jesus, and that Jesus literally has to live our life for us, because we never could live a life pleaseing to God apart from Jesus. When people wonder why would God care, why would he do all of this? the answers are simple, in scripture, of course, as is everything. Here are some reasons for WHY God, and HOW he works: Ephesians 1:11 'according to the purpose of him who worketh all things after the counsel of his own will' Revelation 4:11 'Thou art worthy, O Lord, to receive glory and honour and power: for thou hast created all things, and for thy pleasure they are and were created.'

We left for homeschool, which we had done anyhow except from first through third. I have a law degree and am apparently way more qualified because at least I can get him to not hate math (as much as I secretly do lol). He pays attention, when he was younger he just needed more breaks for (surprise!) normal kid energy
In many cases I don't know if it is lack of self-control or the abnormality of the workaday institution that is elementary public school these days. Kids barely get a recess or lunch break. And that is pre-COVID. Maybe at least kids get to eat now since they can't socialize, but I am guessing the recess allowed won't decrease their energy levels as much. I don't think that the way public school, designed on the Prussian model in the US, operates, is oriented to developing such young minds that need time to play and exert themselves physically as well.

I have had patients who would have died without medication, or whose lives would have been miserable without medication.
It is easy to see when treatment is required for illnesses that can be seen and measured by blood tests or other physical markers. Because what you have is basically described as an " invisible illness " takes nothing away from the fact that it is real, possibly genetic, and almost always requires medication to help with symptoms.
Don't ever let anybody tell you that what you have is not real. Read above about my son with Tourette's. Life was no picnic for him, and to be told that what you are living is not real is a slap in the face.

Wow... This video is actually seriously dangerous.
Seriously, untreated ADHD is almost as much a potentially devastating disorder as diabetes.
Lacking self-control, undisciplined, etc etc etc.... DEFINITELY!
Executive function is were all those things are happening.
Clearly, you also don't understand how executive function works. It's essentially the RAM in your brain... No ram, and operations don't work out very well.
You would never be able to deal with this by delayed punishment... Trust me, I know...
The amount of hidings I got as a kid, were incredibly high, but the behavior rarely changed, why?
Because there is no self control present, the executive function was broken.
Yeah many of the symptoms seem like everyone has them, but anyone who understands mental illness to a reasonable level will know that the DSM (manual for describing mental illness) listed symptoms are only cause for diagnosis on 2 conditions
    A) They cause significant distress
    B) They inhibit function in more than one aspect of daily life
OOH, another piece of horrid and dangerous misinformation:
you talk about the higher rates of addiction and substance abuse (all the while mentioning ADHD meds making people drug addicts). Meanwhile, statistics show pretty damn clearly that those that are medicated are FAR less likely to fall into substance abuse, depression and many other terrible conditions.
These things are still present in adults because they weren't disciplined as children you say?
I was frequently spanked... Guess what?
I still ended up slipping into depression, screwing up major at work...
BTW I only actually ended up starting smoking at age 19.
Now that I am a "drug addict" I am more controlled, better disciplined and have a much brighter outlook on life. Had I continued down the path I was on, I likely would have ended up eventually just committing suicide...
    so... my final point
DO NOT POST THIS KIND OF MISINFORMATION IT LEADS TO PEOPLE NOT TREATING THEIR CHILDREN FOR A SERIOUS MEDICAL CONDITION THAT CAN EASILY LEAD TO DEATH
Anyone with some sense, please lets start flagging all videos like this one as promoting child abuse... cause thats exactly what its doing

There are extremes on both sides of this issue. The churches lack of compassion in regards to mental illness has been and continues to be very pharisaical. Dr. MacArthur sounds very condescending which detracts from the legitimate point he makes regarding the over medication of kids. Jesus had compassion on those who were hurting, people with mental illness are hurting it’s time the church started to love them the way Jesus loved!

    • @kingdomcitizen9067
      @kingdomcitizen9067 5 років тому

I understand your point but compassion has nothing to do with what someone sounds like
You're right Yeshua (Jesus) had more compassion than any of us can ever express. but I'm pretty sure at times he's quoted at telling the entire crowd that their faithless and that their adulterous I'm pretty sure those things don't sound very nice. the beautiful part of what mr. John is telling us this is based upon the facts not about what it sounds like sometimes the truth hurts and it should. one of the worst things we deal with are people who are deceived and realizing we're deceived but once you realize you're deceived that no longer hurts as much and you're able to get around the issue. in the word of God I remember something about any time you were tempted there is a way of escape. something prone to is people is wanting "our" (flesh) escape but the best part it is God has a better escape (spirit) and it might involve you facing the facts and getting your feelings hurt but in the end you'll be free because the truth will make you free. Shalom

Sadly ADHD is real, though over-diagnosed. Macarthur can't be wise and correct all the time, he's only human. He holds on to these views very strongly. I think they are a big part of his identity as a Christian.
We all engage in folly, but we can take comfort that Macarthur's silly and worldly views in certain areas of science and medicine are slowly and quietly going extinct. He knows this and desperately tries to keep them alive because they give him comfort in a world that is very vast and confusing.
I'm not angry at him though. He is a very powerful and famous person, and like celebrities, sometimes things go to his head. All of us would make the same mistake in some other field most likely.

I can’t remember the effect of Prozac, but I certainly felt no better on either drug. I think a few hugs could have done what no drug was capable of doing. I was really lost in college. It was not a good time for me. I felt lonely and depressed attending a large Catholic College that I never wanted to attend in the first place. I was no saint, I longed for the pleasures of life; which was wrong - maybe that’s why I was depressed. I’m glad I’m not there anymore. I’m glad I’ve come to know the Lord. When I slip, I’ll repent. But a loving creator accepts me as I am, in a way no hyper critical earthly parent could ever do. Thank you Jesus my Lord and Savior. I’m am honored to be your son and a member of your family. My son was diagnosed with ADHD by one of the “leading specialists” in our country at the age of 4 and put on ritalin to start with. He was later upgraded to concerta. I was saved in that period, and after much prayer and advice from our pastor, we starter applying consistent, loving, Biblical discipline, and about 6 months later, took him off all his meds. He was shortly functioning as well as any other child, having learned to deal with his sin in the right way. I don’t consider myself qualified to say that ADHD doesn’t exist, but I do believe fully that the majority of diagnoses are made in cases where children are left to rule the parents, left to be raised and educated by the television and entertainment industry, and Biblical discipline is discarded completely. Of course you can expect drugs to “work” when that is the case. When parents take up their obligation to get off their phones and turn off the TV, and *really* invest their time and effort into loving their children, communicating with them all the time and not *only* when they misbehave, and consistently discipline them in love and with a focus on restoration instead of just taking their frustration out on their children when the parent reaches his tolerance limit, I believe the picture will change drastically. I saw the change that it can bring personally.

So you're basically saying that bad parenting causes issues then diagnosed as ADHD. Do you have any idea how offensive this is to parents just doing their best against difficult odds? And just saying 'that is all kids' - well then, you don't actually know what ADHD/similar disorders do to a child. The reason we have more diagnosis is mainly down to wider knowledge now and I'm grateful for that, so more children are helped.
I'm uneasy about over drugging children too, but believe medicine can help extreme cases.
I have a dyspraxic child, is that made up too? She also showed many ADHD symptoms because there is a lot of crossover. She is loved, disciplined, a very strong and committed Christian. She cannot concentrate, trips over her own feet and forgets everything all the time. That's bad parenting, or a neurological issue?

I was raised by an entire generation of people who firmly believed that depression was just a made up excuse for people who didn't want to be happy. I heard people talking about people who claimed depression was real saying things like, "well, that person just needs to get happier" and "that person just needs Jesus." Turns out that now we can actually identify specific chemical imbalances in the brain that cause people to be depressed, and now we have some great medicines to help with that. Some people, of course, abuse those medicines. Others in my age group find the idea of having a diagnosed mental disorder such as depression so terribly repugnant that they won't accept medical help, leading to many of my age group having overdosed on street drugs, died in alcoholic car crashes, or just killing themselves.
Now, there's ADHD, and that same generation, and part of my generation, keeps going on about how ADHD isn't real. "Those kids just need a spanking." The question then must arise - why does one kid in a family with multiple children keep getting spanked for the same things over and over again? My grandpa used to tell a story about coming home from school. He had to walk several miles home from school, but there was a field he could cut across and shave off about half the distance home. He was forbidden to cross the field because there was a mean bull in the field. Every day, his parents would watch him come over the fence out of that field and give him his spanking. From my earliest memories of him, he probably had ADHD, although it was never diagnosed.
I get it, ADHD meds get abused. Kids get diagnosed with ADHD because parents don't want to cope. I have ADHD, but my parents never gave me medicine for it. I was in constant trouble in grade school, never completed my homework, could not stay in my desk, etc. I always made straight A's on all tests, and graduated valedictorian in my class, but my high school teachers finally figured out that I needed extra space and allowed me to get up and move around and stuff as long as I was not disturbing the class (don't sharpen your pencil 15 times, just take a little walk to the bathroom and get a drink instead - don't shake your legs because sitting still is the worst thing in the world, just wiggle your toes instead). Instead of medication, I was given coping skills that have served me well into my adult life. It wasn't until I got married and discovered that my wife hates about half of my coping mechanisms that I began to seek alternative means of dealing with the problem.
I'm a software developer, and I dabble a lot in electronics, and for both of those things, you have to be very precise and exacting, you can't really just leave things out and expect anything to work. However, it never fails that I can set something on my workbench, take a screw out, grab another tool and discover that I've already misplaced the screw I just removed and the screwdriver I removed it with, and I spend the next 30 minutes looking for them. With medication, this doesn't happen - I lay things down, I remember exactly where I put them, and I remember to do simple things like take out the trash or put the clothes in the dryer. Now, you tell me - do I just need to be more organized, after 20 years of working on electronics and 13+ years as a successful software developer for some of the largest IT companies in the world? Or is it possible that maybe there's actually something in my brain that's just a little off, and one small pill a day puts it back in balance?

It could be either but from my understanding of ADHD you haven't described it. Maybe you misplaced things some times and believe you have a disorder and you just haven't misplaced things since but not due to treatment. I can't see how remembering to do some washing could amount to ADHD or indicate a cure though. As far as I'm aware I don't know ADHD to mean forgetting but having a very short attention span and having an inability to concentrate and complete task.

Llosidian Thank you for sharing your experiences. I believe everything that you have written, because my family have lived it all.
I am from an older generation that did not believe in depression, and if I dared mention anything about my symptoms, I was taken to task, mostly by my Mother. There was no such thing as depression in her eyes - it was simply laziness.
The sad truth that you have discussed about people from ( probably ) my era makes me so sad, because I have seem people make all the different choices you mention rather than admit to depression because of the stigma. Because I was an RN, I was never averse to medication. I had patients who would have died without medication.
So when medication for depression finally came into being, I was first in line.
As to ADD, my son who had Tourette's syndrome, suffered terribly during his school years. He is now 29 and on medication that gives him a pretty normal life. Thank you for your input and for sharing. :)

Dang! I do the same thing!!! I can walk into a room and then can't remember what I went there for. Once, I drove through a drive through, ordered my food, then drove right by the second window. Another time, I paid for my gas without ever pumping it. I lay things down all the time and forget where I put them. There's a pill for this? I need it!

If it doesn't exist, why then is it that our second child benefits a lot from ritalin, while the first and the last don't need it? I agree that it's too easily diagnosed and medicated, meaning children not really having ADHD are being diagnosed as such which is wrong. But to say it doesn't exist at all is ridiculous.

To be fair, he did not say it does not exist
