Thank you. I do not shoot video so the programmable custom button is now used for APS-C/Full Frame when I’m using my high resolution bodies like the A7RV or A7CR. Need to look at other possible uses since I’ve had this button on lenses for years now but just started using it. Take care.
I have the 200-600G lens for wildlife, I’ve set mine to a recall program for birds in flight. I can go from shooting manually in darker areas where I have more time to play with settings, to holding the custom lens button which brings me to Hi drive shots, continuous autofocus, 1/2000, f8 and Auto ISO. With a brightly lit sky, ISO should remain low, it’s quite a function to have! I’m so glad I upgraded to the Sony A7III (Coming from Amount A77ii)
That is very cool, so it automatically changes a bunch of features at a the press of a button, does everything go back to how it was before when you release it?
Javier Mercedes Yes, you hold the button for as long as you want to enable those fixed settings. As soon as you let go the camera goes back into whichever focus settings you had enabled, ISO you had set manually, matrix you had set etc. It’s hands down one of the best features on these G lenses!
@@mattlucas719 Hi mate, it’s in your customisable buttons in your cameras menu You’ll have the option to customise the C1, C2 buttons etc, the Fn menu, and also the option to customise the Focus Hold button. If you set the focus hold button to a selected recall then you enable that button to bring forth the settings in that recall instantly, hope you can make sense of this lol 😂
A) This content was exactly what I was looking for and needed - a basic explanation and use cases/examples; and B) I liked and subscribed after your "if you also use puppet voices" comment. A+ content!
@@JavierMercedes Thanks! Oh just same old me. Setting ridiculous expectations for myself and failing to meet them. But you know the game. That is how we grow!
thank you Javier - i thought Sony had put this button as a decorative design - clearly not --- perhaps will use for Eye AF - as do portraits on long end - bw
Thanks, Javier. I too have these lenses for a while and never used the buttons 🤣. However, I have programmed what others use as BBF to be a AF/MF toggle button. So I kinda have all three things in one button. I can remove focus from the release button, have an af/mf switch and focus hold. I don't like to remember things (who am I kidding, I just don't remember 🤣), so this is a fairly easy way. I guess I need to come up with an idea what to use this button for then.
Just set mine to af/mf control, I am trying to get it to infinity so I don't have to focus all the time, special when I am in video mode, I am use to it on my other lens
Thank you, man, for the review. Can it be customized for assigning one of the lens rings to the appeture? Because, you know, we need to invent something for the appeture..
Dear sir, I have been watching your videos a lot and that have been helpful I really appreciate it the work you have been doing. I have two cameras and I just started doing interviews but I don't know how to setup the right angle to shoot interviews for two people like me and the person I will interview. I need assistance like you can do videos for that too that will be helpful I'm looking forward to hearing from you. Thank you
Does Canon have a similar button? Very cool about the switch, the biggest thing for me switching from canon to Sony was the color science. Things just looked good out of camera color wise on canon, but the low light capabilities more than made up for it.
It depends on what you're shooting. I've often lost focus on a bird, for instance, that's in a tree. The camera will suddenly focus on a leaf because I'm human, and I move, and I'm not using a tripod. ;)
very true, but when shooting video on the fly I don't like having to switch between manual and auto. I much rather keep my camera in auto the whole time and hit manual focus on hold when I need it

This is how all video tutorials should be. Excellent explanation. Thank you, sir! New sub here.
At last a video which explains this. Thank you so much
Great video. I use the focus hold button to hold focus in poorly lit areas and to focus trap when shooting racing events.

I don't have a Sony, watched this for the support man! YeehaW! From rain-drenched Ireland! ☘️☮️🤘🏽🤠👍🏽☮️☘️
Thanks Sonny, means a lot man.
Firs one who is explaining how focus hold works and not how to remap button to do something else … 👌

Thorough explanation, I was always confused as to what these buttons actually did; thank you! And yes, give Mr. Penguin the Oscar!
This has been the most informative video. I really like that you walked through the different tips and techniques/ Def subscribed :)
Rad video, thanks man
A super clear and concise answer to my exact question? And it's by @javiermercedes? Why am I not surprised?
Thank you. I’m curious. What monitor do you use?
Thx for this. I like the focus hold function.Cheers.
Also keeping it on Focus Hold! New to Sony (well coming back to it!) Thanks Javier!
Thanks! I have several Sony G lenses, and I never knew what it was for! I like "focus hold," too!
Clear and concise. Thank you brotha ✊🏽
I wonder could I change it to like a recording profile. Like if I take photos, but suddenly wanna switch to video. Would it do that?
great tuto, very useful !

I just did a search h just to know about this button after having rhe lens for almost a year now.
dak preskott?? lol 🔥🔥🔥 video
Good video! I have assigned that button to eye AF but wish I could find a way to assign live and display on the a7ii. We don’t have that option
Can i use this button as record
I think so
It's coo. The Nikon 80-200 2.8 has this button.
That’s good to know!
Thank you and Mr. Penguin
Hahaha thanks!
how did u keep displaying the grey square ?
By touching manually on screen. You tap area where you want to focus then it will stay there until you refocus

I’m a Canon user and I’ve always wondered what that button does as well haha
I can see the value in this. Glad I watched this! I’m thinking about switching to Sony in my next camera upgrade.
Does Canon have a similar button? Very cool about the switch, the biggest thing for me switching from canon to Sony was the color science. Things just looked good out of camera color wise on canon, but the low light capabilities more than made up for it.
Can’t you achieve the same thing by focusing on something and just don’t refocus again?

if you close your eyes you can hear Ben Shapiro lol

Hope it was helpful regardless :)

Getting better focus with my eyes
I would just use manual focus instead using that button to hold focus.

Not Set. Button easily pressed by accident
Thank you very much.
Btw I guess you only drive Mercedes Benz cars for the entire of your life.
Ha! I wish.
