    Hi David, I come back to your reactions many times as I love your professional analysis of the artists showing their wares at the time. Jacob is one of my favourites as he covers so many genres of music. He can do it all. We haven't seen the full potential yet of this amazing man. What's really nice to see, is that his collaborations with other artists, somehow shows them another way to enhance what they do? Does that make sense? I'm just a layman when it comes to the many intrincasis of music but trust my ear for what's going on at the time. Thanks for your work mate.

    This is one of my favorite collaborations ever. They all are fantastic musicians, but as you say, it’s the way they all play for the music and not for themselves what really makes it so wonderful to hear. Everyone is contributing in their own way, so they all can build this amazing music together.
    Btw, you just reminded me of how much I love Snarky Puppy. Can’t wait for the rest of this 5 in a row.

    I've always appreciated Jacob's skill, he's unquestionably capable. But this song made me appreciate his *feel*. Music isn't just a maths exercise for him, I thought it was. He and Michael absolutely commanded this performance. Peerless

    I came here to watch other people enjoying Jacob and Snarky and I left with deep thoughts about discipline and working hard, well, more like the right motivation and the remainder that I have a goal studying architecture right now at uni, after having a rough time these past months struggling with depression, hahaha thank you David. I did enjoy all of this reaction.

    Besides the back up singers, a good portion of those tight harmonies are Jacob using the upper keyboard. It's somewhat like a live time polyphonic vocoder that he developed along with MIT.

    I've been a huge fan of Snarky Puppy and Jacob for a while now and as someone with somewhat of a musical background and a pretty decent ear, but really a laymen when it comes to musical theory and such, thank you so much for your expertise. I always learn a lot from your reactions and this particular one was fantastic!

    I don't know how many people are in that room. . . But everyone is moving their body to the music, or nodding their head in time to the groove, or SMILING. . and most are doing ALL THREE!
    THAT is good music, to produce that reaction in so many people. .

    Just loving this tour of Jacob's music. You bring such an enthusiastic and knowing take to all your reactions. I have to say too that it's so great you're getting up to 100K in the subs, personally I think with the quality of what you put out it should be way more but it looks like the momentum is building. Congrats and thanks as always.

    This is one of my most favorite Jacob pieces, greatly enhanced by all the incredible members of SP and probably, the genius arranging/playing of Michael League. If you can find it on You Tube, a very very rough live video of Jacob doing a killer arrangement of Eleanor Rigby with Louis Cole on drums and Sam Wilkes on bass. It is recorded, who knows where? A music store or who knows. It is totally great but very raw. No bells and whistles, just plain great music, and it kills.

    I wasn't sure if you noticed it or not, so I thought I would bring it up in case you didn't. The keyboard Jacob is playing on top of the piano is for pitch adjusting his voice. I'm pretty sure he had worked with MIT a while back to develop it. So yes there are backup singers in there, but a lot of the vocal chords are his own voice that he's also playing through the keyboard to pitch adjust, which I find just amazing at how well he does that, to sing a certain note, and create chords with that same voice and have to maintain the pitch otherwise it could create awkward sounds through the keyboards' pitch adjusting.

    Many of the harmonies are created by Jacob Collier singing into the smaller keyboard on top of the piano. Ben Bloomberg calls it a _Harmonizer._ He and Jacob Collier created it in collaboration at MIT. The sung note is the main sound source used to derive all the keyboard's notes. Some synthesisers create every note on the keyboard from a single 'sound' source, but they typically divide down. It's claimed it is very difficult to play because the sung note has to be literally 'pitch perfect' immediately, every time, or it sounds 'wrong'. Apparently, a _lot_ of singers 'hunt' for a note a tiny amount. The Harmonizer exaggerates that. Many fans and musicians know about Jacob Collier near-legendary perfect pitch hearing and singing. He can sing to the accuracy and precision needed to play the Harmonizer effectively.

    Exquisite stuff for sure. Something worth noting is that these people are not playing from charts. I'm a drummer for many years yet still find this music (Snarky Puppy in general) definitely complex in terms of arrangements and parts played. In numerous instances this managed to sound like a spontaneous jam, which makes it even more impressive. Your own response further substantiates my feelings.

    For all his technical prowess, Jacob Collier never learned how to sing. Nails on a blackboard.

    • @MusicShed
      @MusicShed  2 роки тому +2

      Here’s a good time for a comment on the way I see this. It’s not necessarily that someone who we don’t like “never learned how to sing, play, whatever… I believe, for the most part, that their voice or vibe doesn’t resonate with us, and that’s ok. But, it doesn’t mean that I need to make sweeping statements about them and what they do or don’t know how to do. To me, that’s arrogant and we can all be guilty of that sometimes. People, artists, food, cars, etc… will resonate or move some and not others. That’s my story and I’m sticking to it! I’m so glad you made that comment.

      @@MusicShed That is the clearest response to criticism about 'Art' I've read. Ever. _Subscribed_ even if only for your open mindedness, explaining your thoughts and principles clearly, and the integrity to respond fairly without equivocation. We may have similar views on music; IMO Music connects deeper than conscious thought. Music touches our being differently for different people, There are few (no?) 'universals' in music.
