I bought a 1989 BMW 635csi which had been stored in a barn for for 20 years. I have never attempted a restoration project before and if im honest i had no idea what i was getting myself into. I start by giving the 6 series a clean then we can get the BMW up in the ramp to assess the engine and the rust!.... This is where the fun begins.

The Flintstones called, they like their car back.
😅😅😅
Nah bud lame joke this is an classic in South Africa that car would sell for millions fully restored
@@robbieproductions9504 We all know that restored 635s are worth a small fortune, but the joke is still funny.
Pour
@@robbieproductions9504 wouldn't it get stolen?
This is definitely going to be an interesting build. I'm genuinely waiting and anticipating to see the outcome. I will never miss any episode on this rebuilding. Mat keep making us happy . Big fan from 9ja.
Total underestimation of the rust problem 🤣 The upside is that I am loving watching Yorkshire Car Restorations repairing it all.
Am 68 now and this is a car I always wanted but could never afford. Really looking forward to seeing how this one progresses! A huge amount of work for you but please don’t give up on it !!
Me too
Patiently waiting for this series to continue
Yeh got a thing for the old 6CSL it was always a car of beauty & desire when I was young (still is). Well done Mat for going outside his comfort zone with this one 👏
Do you mean M635i? There wasn’t a CSL. That was the E9 3.0CSL.
Old 635 sharknose...still is my dream car😍
I have a suspicion that this will be the car you end up keeping forever
No I don't think so
Because it's his 'dream ' car?
@@Toby_the_Glen because unlike all the others he has, this one will actually go up in price. ;)
He'll get attached to it after all the work, it will definitely be a keeper, classic cars get under your skin like that
@@trigsretromotors so true !! You can't easily replace that
I can't tell ya how much I enjoy your channel the good vibes the cool choices of cars you work on.. I'm pretty sure this BMW will test every ounce of patience you have... it's madness that you took this on but here ya go .....
My uncle had that same Model in white. He also saved one from scrapjard, repaired even the bent Chassis and fixed it with a pair of friends, and picked me up for shopping when he was done. The drive was sooooo damn cooooool! 20 years later I bought my first BMW. His comment: "Finally a decent car!" God... I miss this guy!
This is going to be a great project to watch can't wait to see how Matt takes this on and how it all comes together. Good on ya Matt
Hi Andrew, I got this message as well, Is it a scam ??
love this guy so positive in everything he does great role model for all of us who need it when trying new things for the first time👌
Love your positive attitude Mat, its infectious! Was aghast at the state of some of this BMW and you just take it all in your stride with a “I’ve seen worse”…brilliant!! All the best with this project, I’ll definitely be glued to the channel. Great work
An ex neighbour once stuffed his red 635csi through our farm hedge 30 years ago. Legend. He "was avoiding a cat".. at 2.30am.. I've loved these big classy cruisers ever since. Great choice Matt, you have a natural gift and gorgeous infectious style. Love it.
Thanks for being my absolute favorite UA-camr Matt, such an inspiration!!!!!!keep up the amazing work!!! Much love from 🇺🇸
Fascinating insight into just how much easier it was back in the day to work on a car. Awesome content bro.
More and more respect going to you Mat. To take on an older car restoration like this is a very different to replacing a bunch of bolt on parts on a newer car. I really hope that you learn lots and ultimately enjoy this build.
One of the best looking cars ever.
Can't wait to see you put your twist on it.
I know it's gonna end up looking low,
and mean and moody. Exactly what an old 6-series should be!!
Commenting before watching again, looking forward to this project so much. Drove my bosses 365csi when I was 19 back in the day, unbelievable car back then, the absolute nuts! Nice work Mat!
As an owner of an E24 that has been sitting for 10yrs in a cold/winter region, I'm rooting for you and this restore and hoping my case is much easier than yours.
This may already be my favourite build of yours, looking forward to more content on this gorgeous motor!
Constantly setting that bar higher and higher each time mat, love it!
Hope to see more soon 🙂
Can't wait for more episodes on this car! Although it definitely needs a manual swap imo
Yes please!!!!
it's luxury cruiser of 80s, for someone it can be perfect with auto too, but I will shut up as I picked manual one lol
Will need lots of patience and deep pockets. Doesn’t make any financial sense unfortunately - it’s a parts car really ….
Best of luck
@@CON1FER nonsense a parts car.
@Nick Name it's really bad
Sat in Jamaica and a Mat Armstrong video pop’s up….well that sun and booze will have to wait 🇯🇲👌
Matt you're gonna learn so much from this project. Good luck mate. Your success so far is well earned. Looking forward to this particular journey. Peace
As fare as im aware Yorkshire car restoration doing the welding job and they are doing a good job…
I just love how you keep challenging yourself. Fair play Matt. I’m all over this project 👍🏻
Somehow i got the feeling, this might be my favourite car you‘ve ever build… Can‘t wait for the next video!!!
Damn this car will end up killing you. Both mentally, physically and financially if you’re planning on restoring it a 100%. Worked with these type of rust jobs in my years at the shop but this looks like straight hell😅 Good luck on the build, looking forward to progression. If anyone really sets their mind to something, it can be accomplished💪
I think it’s perfect for him to practice fabrication and welding on without the worry of messing it up. It will be make or break getting all that under seal off though😂
Can’t wait to watch this build progress! I love a classic BMW and the E24 is right up there with the ultimate for me 🙌🏻
I’ve just bought my own 330ci E46 to restore, any videos on rust repair are going to be invaluable 😅
Mat, for any rust repair panels check out a company called Valcas garage. They do a lot of panels for classic BMW’s.
Working on a car of this age is going to be something of a trade-off. The body work and chassis will probably test you further than you have been before but, mechanically, this is a fairly straightforward beast. Not a great deal of complex electronic sub-systems to go wrong. It's going to be old school as some elements of this car probably date back to R&D work undertaken in the late 70s! This is going to be a cracking project vehicle.
You are literally renovating the car of my dreams. It will be a pleasure to see it once again in it's full glory! ❤️
As an oldie watching your channel I have always had a soft touch for the 6 series, to me it's still a new car! Looking forward to your adventure in restoring these lovey looking cars. Good luck with that rust!
Wow, credit where it’s due you don’t do things by half. What a job you have ahead with this car. Can’t wait to see it progress 💪🏻
What happened to this build?!
Some other channel is restoring the body. I think they’ve just finished it so maybe MA will star back on it soon 🤷🏻♂️
Yorkshire car restorations are doing it for free in exchange for exposure and he hasn't mentioned them once
@@benbradby751Hmm.. that’s a bit sh!7! Maybe he’ll do a special or something with them when they hand it or the shell back over? 🤞
Same question
Good luck on this one matt, I think it could be the most frustrating, but most satisfying ones yet…I’ve learnt what patience actually means working on cars…1 step forward, 3 steps back! Worth it all for the landing curve.
Love it. You're gonna become so much more attached to this car than the quick rebuilds you've done previously! Keep up the great work Mat!👍
Its going to be awesome watching you restore this especially as i am doing the same to a 1988 E30 325i. good luck dude
I had a 325 touring as i kid. Loved it. One of a few cars i wish id never sold.
That's got less rust than my rst did, spent 2 weeks welding that up, all 4 floorpans, both inner and outer sills, battery tray, boot floor, one inner and outer rear arch, ns a pillar and the famous fuse box tray, so I have no doubt that you can get this done
This is actually brilliant. Really informative and entertaining at the same time. This is my favourite series you've done (I've been binge watching them). Can't wait to see the progress 👍
Nice to see. I restored one of these in the early 2000’s and they were just as rusty 20 years ago.
There is a lot of knowledge out there about these cars.
I really appreciate you taking on this restoration Mat. Reminds me or Car SOS or a Ant Anstead rebuild. Done right this car will be worth a fortune. I can’t wait to follow the journey and getting this restoration 100% Done. Thanks again.
2:40 - There’s nothing strange about that combination at all. Mat, your are absolutely living the dream with those cars.
I was skeptical in your last video of the white calipers on the Aston Martin. One week later, I’m intrigued. They look good.
Once again, great videos. I really enjoy your channel.
Love your energy, passion and hard work Mat, another great video
Awesome videos. One thing I learned... by reading the manual.. is to loosen the torque converter as a window is provided to access the bolts and remove it with the gearbox.
I own several modified 80s BMWs and I love them, but you’re a complete madman for taking this on - Bravo 😂👏
A customer once brought us a 635csi for maintenance, easily the coolest car I have ever driven
This is gonna be your best build yet, I can’t wait for this series, keep goin your channel is the only one I’ve got notifications on cos i look forward to it that much, you put in so much graft it’s mental
Hi Matt hope your well, love the channel of all the cars you repair with a great deal of detail and skillset, enjoying this one because its a old hen box classic being brought back to life. Im an ex car mechanic and car restorer 15 yrs got a back injury retired now , but always enjoyed restoring the older hen boxes better back to showroom condition.
More sense of enjoyment giving it a new sense of life
Hi Mat thanks for the reply will do. The old Bmr ill look forward to more video uploads and seeing the progression to get it back mint on the road with your skillset and patience
All that rust....I was worried about the jacking points with you underneath it!
Enjoying your passion for it, and waiting for episode 3. 😁
I think this is going to be my favorite build out of everything you have done so far!
This is restoration of a classic , I love seeing older cars on the road , it’s very nostalgic . When I see Triumph Dolomites they remind me of my grandfather .
Great start Mat, love your enthusiasm and looking forward to mods. All the best.
Honestly best of luck Matt, this is a serious step up in work load.
I'd be tempted to go Resto Mod. Modern engine, suspension, brakes etccc
I am sooo excited to see how this goes. You can do it Matt - it’s going to be an amazing project 👍🤞👏
Hahaha, that is so British filling the engine with water from the kettle. Great work Mat!
Matt, you've got this. The car deserves your help. Go for it.
It’s a 80s classic, its obligatory that it comes with rust 😂 can’t wait to see the finished project, she is a beauty 🙌
That’s not rust mate that’s rot which is even worse
I still have my E30 which I bought in 1998. It's been through 3 rebuilds including E36 engine swap. The 80s BMWs are great to work on once you know what you're doing
Hi Mat...This is going to be a great project once again...I think it's worth the time for you to learn how to do welding and you then can look at it and say how happy this car was restored by you...A great video once again and looking forward to the finish but don't rush it..Thankyou for the content
Oh Mat I absolutely love the 635CSI totally stoked you got this. Not bad at all. Some welding, replace brake limes with nickel lines. Fit better suspension, stainless quad exhaust , rebuild engine '- up the bhp and torque. Fit alpine stereo amplified sound system , make it look gorgeous !
Mat, you are an amazing mechanic and car body expert, you totally amaze me!!!! Thank you for your wonderful video's!...
Love these cars
I remember years ago when I nearly Bought an M635i it was only going for £5k pristine.
Sadly I passed on it about 2 yrs after the prices sky rocketed.
Keep this coming as I'm glued, love it.
Also, BMW keeps parts for 10 years but their sport division sometimes has stuff for 35 years.
MBenz keeps parts for 50 years
VW for 30 years
Opel for 10 and now 5 as they've been purchased by Italy.
You can also find some from the BMW factory in Menlyn Pretoria, South Africa. Write to their msport division they might still have stuff
Nothing but positive energy from this guy! Way to go!
Bruce Willis in moonlighting had this car if I remember correctly that alone makes this an 80s classic....bit of Hammerite on chasis, job done...😊
This looks like the one I was looking at on eBay 😂 barn find, same colour, chrome front headlight surrounds. This will be fun to watch!
Top stuff Matt. Can’t think when I’ve looked forward to one of your builds more. Roll on the next part 👍
Man, this video saved me soo much money! My 86' 635CSI wouldn't start for jack bro'! The plugs, cap/rotor & fuel pump are fairly new (2016), but been hardly made use of or run for years beyond here & there. Strong crank, but no start. Bought an ECM from a seller I've purchased from prior, installed it & she fired up straight away & runs like a top! Thanks again for the great videos fam!
Good to hear bro!!
Keep grinding man. The further you push your abilities the more you learn. Love the channel Mat
This is the project i am most excited about now. Dying to see what route you take with it. Good luck 👍
Matt I rebuilt a 1986 mk2 golf gti and money pit the correct tag for it. I started with a full underseal and respray after I replaced as many panels with holes in as I could. Good luck with this one as it's going to be a labour of love...
Really hope you finish this project! A lot to do but I can't wait to see you smash it out!
Looking forward to this build. Jaymic are a great place for BMW classic parts also the owner is extremely knowledgeable and always happy to help.
I'm so glad I found this channel. This is going to be very interesting project.Cant wait to see it all.👍👍
Awesome stuff mat, loving this build mate.
Love this car !!! You’re best yet !!! Gonna be a lot of work , especially welding
Nice car series. Hopefully you can fix some newer cars like the Transporter movie cars as the next project. Looking forward to the next episode. Keep up the good work.
9 year old son asked why I watch Mat’s channel and I said because the journey he’s been on should inspire u that you can do anything if ur prepared to go at it with everything you’ve got. Need more like u Mat. Keep it up better than TV!
The front end of these old BMW's are gorgeous
This car already is an absolute beauty, can't wait to see what it it will be like when it's fully done.
When you get this finished I could see you and Hannah making a 1980s moonlighting short vid. Going to be an interesting long term project and your the man to do it👍
She came up well man. With you all the way. It’s great and impressed to see a young cat giving this a go. 👍👍❤️
We know that you will not fail! This will be a mega motor when completed. Love the channel 👍
I go crazy waiting for your videos every week wounding what you have plan or doing it insane keep up the hard work love it
Love your videos, don’t know how many hours I’ve spent watching and wishing I could do that. Keep it up mate 👏🏻
When I was a kid there was a guy in my area who had one, he used to fly past me in it all the time... I always wanted one.
This could be one of your best build series yet Matt.. that car is cool AF and we can't wait to see what you do with it....
Definitely stepping outside your comfort zone with this one 😁👍 looking forward to the welding 👌
So excited for the e24, wanna see every single bit of the build👀
a mission impossible, when you can fix this job, you are a great hero, can't wait for the next video!
I'm hooked. Wish there were more. Keep them coming Matt.
I love this channel. Hope we could have more older car in the garage. All love ❤️
Nice pick, buddy. I had a 88 325i(2 dr), stripped out the engine, transmission, and basically what felt like everything else. I picked up sport interior, a m60(4.0L v8) from a 540, 740 or 840, snagged a 5 speed(6 speed out of budget), coilovers, wheels, custom dabbed exhaust and a loooooooot of other bits and ends. It was an absolute labor of love and just like you I had zero experience but came out the other end with such an amazing story. If you need any help or tips feel free to ask Matt.
Loving this one, glad to see something older/different type of restoration on the channel. Looking forwards to see how this progresses!
Ok yeah sure 🤣
This is really gonna be very interesting, and I’m looking forward to what could be a keepsake in your collection.
Great vid Mat, a lot of work there, looking forward to the resto, get that chisel out !!!!
Something different Mat, go for it mate, another great video and adventure
An iconic car and you will be able to get it done with your skillset, looking forward to this one.
I really enjoy your channel. How you bring everyone along with you. Thank You
NEED TO SEE THIS BUILD AGAIN!!! Love old BMWs… e30 m3 restoration next? 😉
