Hand Fabricating A Brand New Chassis Rail For Mat Armstrong's Classic BMW E24 635 CSI - Part 4
Вставка
- Опубліковано 27 тра 2023
- In episode 4 of the restoration of Mat Armstrong's BMW E24 635 CSI we start off by un-stitching the old rotten rusty chassis rail. We then set about repairing the floor which was behind the chassis rail and finally get on to hand making a brand new section of chassis rail to replace what was rotten.
We made the whole section out of 1 sheet of metal and it fits perfectly! Getting this section of chassis rail will really get some structure back into the car! This is a major structural section which was non existent before. Its almost like we got this section of chassis rail straight from the dealer! We are looking forward to getting this section welded in properly! But first we will need to fully weld that floor section in and protect it from corrosion. Also there is another small repair to do on the floor before this chassis rail section goes in!

To me, Yorkshire Car Restoration is one of the best car restoration channels out there. There is something about this channel that makes me wanna watch more and more of it. Maybe it's the combination of your sense of humor, the background music, the rust, and the sparks of light that hypnotize me.... I know you guys will get 10x ~ 20x more subs in time for sure. I just wish I knew a way to help you achieve it sooner. Anyone out there know anything we can do to make this channel explode over night? Please, let me know!
Thank you so much for the very kind comment! It really is very much appreciated and makes all the hard graft worth it! You are a legend :) pinned :)
@@jamescalderwood Nice. I will think of something👍One thing that worries me is that my post may look like ad spam and end up making it look bad for YCR. Maybe youtubers can see a statistic data of where their subscribers are coming from or what other similar channels they are subscribed to. Then, YCR could do a collaboration video with them and aquire their viewers?! I say this because two channels I am subscribed are collaborating occasionally and they have similar number of subscribers!
Absolutely love the work you guys do really do appreciate your posts outstanding work
Car giveaways, prepping a car (rust to riches?) for a big event like a cannonball, and commonly YT searched for car needs to be mended as well....eg I know no R8's are in the same state as this BM but most people land here due to MA, not because they've searched for an E24. I'd love to win the lottery & donate them some civic rust buckets, they may grab more viewers initially.
IMHO, the best UA-camrs stick to their roots once famous. These guys are the best at fixing old cars.
Jag instämmer helt 👍
The amount of work you mad lads are doing is extraordinary. Top notch guys
Thank you! A lot of work ahead but we will get there!
Absolute artist. Kudos
I'm glad Matt brought the car to you guys. I've been binge watching ever since.
Me too
I'm 5 years away from pension & when i watch a video like this, i just realise how much of my life has been sat around wasted in offices. I wish I'd been a mechanic or worked in a body shop like this years back. I know its hard work but if it is this satisfying to watch, I cant imagine for one second how satisfying it much me to complete these kind of jobs.
I made great money in business over the last 25 years but I never created anything to a degree that this type of satisfaction. I don’t regret my life but I would say I would have taken a bigger interest. Also sending my middle son to trade school
That car was a total lost cause and still you guys are rescuing it.. unbelievable work!
Everytime I am watching there's more more and more rust.. I think that Matt should help as a punishment😂😂. You guys are really magical.
Mat is helping this channel with a massive number of new subscribers.
And talking as myself, I’m loving this content
@@filipejlsantiago off course I like it too and it was only a joke.
@@tommiekebab1929 Isnt it a piy that you actually had to explain that you were joking 🙄
@@Boru06 🙏👍
@Filipe Santiago I'm not too sure Mat has actually helped, I've seen him post about this once, and that's it. It a shame really, as you can see, these guys are putting all this skilled work into restoring this... and I'm pretty sure they have said they are doing this work for nothing. I do hope Mat does start to give more recognition and support.
How can watching a couple of highly skilled people removing mountains of rust from a car I think most of us would have scrapped be so entertaining???
Brilliant.
Hope you enjoyed the video! If you did please consider hitting that like and subscribe button. Thanks!
Please use a mask, i know its easy to be complacent but in years to come you will thank me.
Done. 😊
Fairplay bro you got some serious skills 👊🔥🔥🔥🔥🔥
Clever!! Pure skill
It’s amazing how much a car will rust and still resemble a car
Honestly your a wizard!! That is some very impressive skill and work shown. 👏 YCR hands down the best around 👌
Thank you so much for all the support!!! It is appreciated as always!
I love Mat, but amount of knowledge and work you put on this car shows that you are in much higher category in car rebuilding thank most big car youtubers.
Shear genius. After cutting away the rust I couldn’t see how he could make an accurate chassis leg. A joy to behold. Skill like that will save this car. Brilliant. Thank you.
100k subs soon, you deserve it.
I love the chillstep music you add to the background of the fabricating. It's so relaxing seeing things come together.
Can't stand the so called music, please please ditch it , otherwise great work, keep it up , and yes i know i can turn down the volume , which i do , i would prefer to hear the sound of tools and work things . All the best .
I wouldnt have thought this was possible. Mind numbingly brilliant... john
Exceptional fabrication , I admire your patience I can tell it has to be just right for you and that's what make the difference in a genuine restoration.😂😂😂
Many would say this is to far gone. But UA-cam makes anything possible.
That is an amazing piece of fabrication! The care and constant adjustments, blimey, great effort. All the way through I was thinking "measure twice, cut once....." Great job!
The level of detail in your restoration is next level. Definitely just became an instant fan. Shoutout from South Africa
It's always amazing to me how easy guys like you make this look when in fact it requires immense skill and countless years of experience. Nice job!
I gotta say you are one seriously talented fabricator, this is great content for us armchair wannabe car restorers 👌
Amazing! There was me thinking you were going to weld in a new rail from BMW, I didn't realise you were going to fashion it from scratch. Awesome craftsmanship. 👏
10 years in resto for my Lancia so far. It looked the same. Hopefully get to drive it again. On another note Dad used to drop me off to school in the company car 635csi. Loved that car. Collecting it from PL BMW was one of the best experiences of my life.
True craftsmen and a pleasure to watch those skills that have been honed over a long period of time.
Matt Armstrong and other similar channels are good at what they do but this is another level.
*Mat*
This is actual skill level work
@@RWL2012Yeah whatever...Sorry did I offend your lover?
I’m glad Matt’s car body was a pile of ****. Its amazing to see the craftsmanship and how your approach putting it back together. You should be very proud of the work you do. Also love how the videos are editing.
I don’t know what’s more impressive, the work you’re doing on the car or the fact you can write the word FRAGILE upside down!
Superb works as always. It just goes to show what can be achieved with skill, sheer determination, and an endless supply of sheet steel and MIG wire! I still can't quite understand the commenters who insist that you are doing it all wrong, there is no point to it, car is scrap etc, etc., they just don't get it. I understand that you have not completely stripped the car down to a bare shell and had it dipped or blasted because there would have been nothing left of it, with all the points of reference gone. Once cars like this are finished, they are not used as daily drives, left out in all weathers, subjected to winter after winter of salted roads. They are cherished, stored properly, regularly inspected and cavity waxed. The parts that are not rotted out by now will never rot left as they are, but if they are stripped by dipping or blasting, then they are at the mercy of whatever means of protection is chosen. The way you are doing it is the best way for that particular car. Keep up the good work guys.
Genuinely came to the comments to find out why they didn't dip the shell, but this completely makes sense now. The skill and patience involved here is just incomprehensible!
@@DaveJones85 Agreed Dave. They are something else these guys. Thanks to them I am back on my own project after being stalled for a couple of years. They have given me lots of hope!
Another great instalment of my favourite internet fabricator! Well done that man!!
That frame rail fabrication was seriously impressive… well done from 🇨🇦
The way these guys going it’s literally gonna be a brand new car!!!! I love it! My second fav UK UA-cam channel! Keep up the great work mates👍💪🙏🤜🤛 And those metal fab skills is truely a dying art.
Not sure if anybody will read this or if the do even care, but….. for me it’s taken until now to begin really enjoying this, for me the strip down bit was too long and now the fab has started I’m fascinated, the skill and attention to detail is awesome 👏
We read all comments:) thabks for the support. Sure the strip took long but the amount of parts and trims on the car was crazy. Also we only do youtube in our spare time so don't get much chance to do it. But thanks for the kind feedback. Lots more videos to come :)
Impressive work. There's more rust than good metal. Fair play to Mat for saving it. This is going to be £££.
That chassis leg, is a work of art.
Mastercraftsman working his art, amazing.
Marvellous 95% of people would have sent it to the crusher😮. Great videos, super skilled and patient lads👍
Really nice craftmanship and highly skilled work. I am deeply impressed by the patience put in to forming this peace. Well done
the skills. the craftsmanship, the fabrication and execution far exceed market value of this 6 series. these guys are amazing
The amount of time that goes into these repairs must be colossal
Loved it no more playing up for the camera and being cringe, being yourself doing a great job and being informative. Would watch more of the content like this and can't wait to see the build at the end top stuff 👏🏻
The attention to detail is incredible!
My god that is a 20 minute video of you guys saving that rail, which must of been hours of work . How can anyone afford your craftsmanship? Amazing work !
Haha I'm enjoying watching your channel as much as Matts now! Beautiful work!
Fantastic work.
Please consider wearing a mask when angle grinding.
Cut something with the sun coming through and you will see all the dust that goes into the air and then into your lungs.
I’m a carpenter and I’ve learned the hard way.
Love your work 😃👍🏼
Total master craftsman at work. I have so much respect for what Mat does and really enjoy his videos but this is another level. To me, the car should be scrapped but you show clearly how it can be done. Top notch work.
I can not believe what a man can do with only his hands
I'm just absolutely glued to watching your videos !
Massive amount of respect for that fabrication 😎
Wow you really created a peace of art with that chassis reconstruction. 👍😎
I'm hooked on this series. The level of craftsmanship on display is incredible.
Love that you don't have a proper pair of scissors to cut carboard and have to resort to heavy equipment.
I have no doubt this is gonna be awesome when finished
Agreed brother, anything to do with mat, gold!👍👌👊🦾🦾🦾
Thabk you! It's a lot of work but we will get it :)
@@yorkshirecarrestoration I have no doubt about that
Sublime craftsmanship loving the hands on old school approach making everything by hand no computers
This playlist gave me the confidence to work on my old rusted Nissan, if this can be fixed :D my Nissan can be saved as well :D
Never did I think that BMW can be this bad rust wise.Time neglect and tough climate have really taken there toll on this one.Lot of fabrication is needed, but this guy is up to it.This E 24 will live again and be nice too.
When you look at the points for jacking, it`s only just hanging in there. Top work guys
As always turning a disaster into a work of art. I direct my students to your site if they are doing any work on their cars to see the masters at work.
Belting piece of fabrication and welding….a lot of skill right there. Good Job lad 🤘🏻
I Hope Matts got deep pockets the labor hours involved here and craftmanship is incredible 💙
We are doing it free of charge. And thank you so much!
@@yorkshirecarrestoration wow!!!
I'm sure it will pay off in the long run..
@@yorkshirecarrestoration
Hopefully somewhere in his millions of subscribers, there are plenty jobs for you.
@@yorkshirecarrestoration Wow fair play guys extremely generous of you's got a nice rusty 200sx s13 if your doing freebies only had it since 2011 one of those im restoring but never gets done jobs 😀
blows my mind that this is actually repairable
For me your best episode. You explained your thinking and remedies. Great work. I just can't imagine how much all your highly skilled labour will cost? Surely hundreds of man hours on this project will far exceed the cars value ten fold? I can see the Porsche your doing and the sums would make more sense. But the Datsun and this BMW are to show your skills only I imagine? Your fan base is rightly growing 👍I don't think I would ever be able to afford your services but great videos to watch.
Just shows anything can be fixed…. Just not by anyone . Top work guys
Yorkshire Car Restoration could just as easily be called
"St Andrews *Miracle Workers* Auto Restoration"
Phenomenal craftsmanship guys!
This is what car junkies want to watch....Carbon Fibre..? Who needs it!
Lovely Jubbly, I have a great deal of admiration for you young man. If it wasn't for my illness at 18, it was was my intention to go into motor vehicle industry. I hope Matt Armstrong has deep pockets, I think he'll need them to keep this project going.
Уважение и благодарность людям за такую нужную работу
Some exquisit metal origami in that chassis rail, dad’s skill is rubbing off
Damn! That was some witchery craft genius going on there... WOW!!! 👏👏👏👏
What a grafter, what a genius
Mat likes to say that "hard work beats talent", however, hard work alone doesn't get the job done in this case. I see plenty of talent on display from you fellas!
Beautiful work, beautiful car, built without any concern for rust control…..good ole bmw’s
A real craftsman at work! Wish I had it in me, still have my bare Alfa Romeo Giulia chassis waiting for better times but simply can't do it myself and lacking funds.
Excellent work. When Matt finishes in Florida he should get the welding gear on! Nice to see cardboard aided design getting used properly.
Artists at work. Beautiful work guys.
Craftsmanship in progress….. 💥🎉🍺👍😎
As if the repair and fabrication work to salvage this frankly terribly damaged car wasn’t enough, you’ve had to set up the shots and edit them to create an incredible record of the work. The narrative has at times a lovely humor but the editing and production is first rate, gently telling the story of saving the car.
Your commitment to the project is at a level I can only aspire to. Compelling viewing, if only to see when the compressed air stops raining down rust fragments. Can’t wait for next installment
There is so much beauty in repairing stuff
Kinda new to following Matt, but I do like to see him getting into older cars, salt is just such a killer to these European beauties, Rj in Oz
23:02 Perfect demonstration of safety-squint technique!
Your skill and patience is amazing. I've been watching these rebuild videos since Matt forwarded this car to you. I thought it would be an impossible task but now I am eager to see the end result. Greeting from The Netherlands.
Man. You're some machine, you.
That fabricated section at the end of the film, gave me goosebumps.
So skilled.
It was like there was hope for the old BMW Titanic.
Everything gets easy when you do it ever day ,but your a master 🙏
After a day digging a Volvo V70R out of its death pit and getting it home, nothing better than sitting back with a brew and watching this video. Gosh I love this channel! Amazing fab work
That"s your personal best video yet, great editing. just getting on with it thanks
As a Yorkshireman myself great advert for Yorkshire. Wonderfully unique therapeutic mix of watching magic happen with great background tunes.
Your attention to detail is amazing!!
fabrication skills are next level mate
I want you guys to know your channel is helping me out a lot with ideas on how to tackle my restoration project. I'm working on an 88 Honda CRX that needs a little bit of love in the floor pan, framerails/lower sills and rear wheel archs. It's no where near as much of a Disaster as the Datsun but it's going to be quite the challenge for a first time restoration project.
Absolute work of art I hope your channel grows and grows guys
Incredible investment on your part doing all this work for free! Just hope it pays off in the long run! Great videos
Wow, incredible craftsmanship! leaving me speechless
I have a Ford Transit and have seen a fair bit of rust but this is crazy. That you’ve found anything solid to weld on to is already a result!
Ryan spot on again mate and a pleasure to watch.
Amazing! Old skool craftsmanship. Hooked on this channel. Well done guys
About 60% less mad music transitions, great work lads, much more watchable. And that’s a crazy amount of work and skill, amazing work.
The joys of owning classic cars in the UK.
Brilliant job very clever I can see why Mat choose you to do this job looking forward to the next one
great to see you continue on the chassis where most mechanics would say ok, this is lost :)
Love the bench mounted “tinsman’s snips” style sheet cutter. Couldn’t cut it with any hand held snips, too thick.
Your personality in the way you go about your business could be anyone of my car mates. Great sense of humour 😁.
The way you’ve thought about the measuring and working out the job, is nothing short of brilliant.
There’s a lot of work to do on this E24, and it doesn’t phase you guys. I wouldn’t hesitate to take my car to your business your workmanship is spot on . 👍🏻👏🏻👏🏻👏🏻😉
