This is an excellent video. I have been treated by Dr. Ray and his advice, using these techniques, has worked in eliminating my bunion pain and straightening my big toes. Thank you!
treehuggermc1: I can't say that it "went away" because if I go back to my old shoes (not Correct Toes approved) even for just a few hours, my big toe will naturally gravitate to its' old position, the shoe rubs in the wrong place and I end up with a red painful spot (the bunion). What has worked for me is wearing Correct Toes inside a minimalist shoe with toe socks (more comfortable when wearing the Correct Toes because my feet sweat a lot) and performing the bunion exercises. If I do these things my bunion is not red and irritated, my foot has a much more natural look (big toe is straighter and more aligned with my foot and my toes are spread apart properly) and, most importantly, I don't have the excruciating nerve pain on the top of my big toe. @Northwest Foot & Ankle Just *watching* this makes my bunion hurt! Anything that pulls on the big toe causes deep aches in the joint, which lasts for several hours. For instance, I cannot wear any sandals with a toe loop or straps that criss-cross over that big toe. I've started using Correct Toes a few days ago and that doesn't seem to bother it, as it's a gentle stretch at this time. I'll add the material into the slot after three months as your site suggests, but in the meantime was hoping to try this bunion reversal exercise. Not sure if I can, due to pain. 😬
That's okay! Everyone is at a different degree . Start with the Correct Toes and even using heating creams or pads in the next few weeks. Then slowly try and mobilize that joint. If it's still near impossible in the coming months, we can regroup and apply some other methods.

Get socks with toes so your socks dont squeeze your foot . Work on stretching the foot and spreading your toes. Hopefully this will help prevent ever needing surgery in the future and make my bunion tolerable.
@@zenithchan1646 these movements/exercises with combinations of some toe spacers/spreaders can definitely help. Corey Pressler I agree ! Dr Ray & team - thank you for all your help. Not only is my bunion symptoms declining but my arches are strengthening and I have transitioned away from supportive footwear. I hope chiro clinics learn of your CorrectToes & treatment plans. I've told mine and shared the websites.

I DON'T HAve pain when I don't wear shoes fact I have found a pair of trainers that are light and have a wide toe box but my left foot is HARD TO GET IN BECAUSE THE SECOND toe is bent to the right and.. My right foot is flat and...my left HAS a high arch. This is acquired about 4 yrs ago, thanks for your time and patience
So if I do those exercises it will go back on its place?? Got the separators and only taking it off when showering or out of the house.. thank you for sharing this short and great video.
sarah x I wore them religiously, but during the pandemic, I’ve not even thought about it, I guess b/c I don’t go anywhere. I was going to yoga classes almost daily. Now I’m just barefoot at home. The exercises do help. I need to get back on those too. Thanks for the reminder.
Starkey Morgan I’ve been very lax wearing them the last 6 months, like never. Since the pandemic quarantine, I’m mostly home & barefoot. I was able to wear them for long periods pretty quickly. I also made a point of getting rid of shoes that weren’t designed to allow me to wear them. Correct Toes are not very big, so it was an easy transition, & the material is very soft & feels good. Some years ago I bought Yoga Toes, which take much more getting used to bc they are much, much thicker & not meant to be worn with shoes. Both are good products, & I need to get back in the habit of wearing them. Yoga Toes are designed to be worn about 5 minutes at first & definitely take some getting used to. You gradually build up time. You can wear them at night while you sleep after awhile, but I never did that bc they’re not meant to walk in, & I was afraid that if I got up in the night that I’d fall & kill myself.
"increase alignment" By how much after how long? Would be great to cite scientific studies or at least provide video/photo/x-ray of somebody claiming to have done such exercises before/after.
Exactly, Those little disclaimers at the, "If you have arthritis, go to podiatrist (who will tell you it's too late); they can't be fixed--just helped be less painful. These are preventative exercises. Another cause of the outward ankle twist is leg length discrepancy, which forces the leg to twist to keep balance mid-to-late stride.
Is it worth sizing up on Correct Toes? Even with the recommended splint for bunions inserted in the largest slot in my Correct Toes, I find that my hallux still tracks toward my second toe, because I have a large space between the first and second toes. I've been wearing CT's for 9 mo. and my progress for bunion correction has stalled. Thanks!
I have that , I do wear a straightner , only for a short while , because after a while i do notice that the bone in the large toe does start hurting . Do I just wear this for short periods of time ?? Thank you .
Is it possible that i have the same issue where my toe is bending or leaning to the other fingers without having any sort of pain? Because in my case (my right food for instance) the toe is leaning a bit to the right, same problem with the other foot, but no pain whatsoever 😅 .. and thankyou so much for uploading this i will make it a habit of exercising these ☺️ appreciate it.
I have that too. I want to try to “reverse” it (although everyone says that’s impossible without surgery) or at least stop it from worsening so that I don’t get pain later. Today went to a podiatrist, got some custom insoles, and in the process of getting rid of all shoes that don’t fit perfectly.
A fundamental improvement to the most important stretch (0:33 (also affects 1:25)): In order to stretch the adductor hallucis effectively you cannot just bend the big toe outward, you need, with the target foot inverted and resting on the thigh of the opposite leg, to simultaneously hold on to the the other side of the transverse head (by third-fourth-fifth metatarsophalangeal joint)(using your other hand, preferably wearing a dishwashing glove so that you get a good grip). If you don't then the muscle will largely just be pulled along. en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Adductor_hallucis_muscle
I think what he is saying is that you would take your effected foot your wanting to stretch.. when you are sitting, place your foot on your other thigh so your foot is now at the ankle resting on the thigh of your other leg.. Like you would if your are crossing your leg. this will allow your foot to rotate inward some. Then, using your hand furthest away from the foot.. to grab the 4 other toes. at where they connect to the foot and hold them there so they dont slide to much towards the big toe. Now, taking your free hand and using it to pull the big toe.. (which is called the 1st metatarsal bone) away from the foot to allow it to stretch like you see in the video above and holding it there so it can stretch for 30 sec to 1 min.... then release.. then do it again... do this a few mins at least... like 5 mins of total stretch time. You can do this multiple times a day.
I'm a dancer and baton twirler! Our shoes stink for adequately allowing the foot to perform! And barefoot is unfortunately not an option due to practice on pavement. Then,I work in an industrial environment and sometimes need to wear steel toe boots! Ugh. And mine are curled up in the toes.
Thanks great vid BUT No mention re the link to ankle mobility also being a factor in the misalignment - doing this combined with ankle strengthening exercises have helped me
I don't wear tight shoes but my toe was starting to move over so at night I slept with my heel on the other foot, between the big toe and the next toe, spreading the big toe outward and it kept it from slanting inward, straightening it up over time.
You don't need to wear tight shoes for this to be a problem. The modern shoe design is going to push your big toe in. Even shoes that feel loose have this design - they don't affect you only because you're habituated from a lifetime of wearing the . Very few modern shoes are shaped like natural feet. You specifically have to look for minimalist shoes. After wearing only minimalist shoes for 3 years, I can't fit in normal shoes anymore. I once tried shoes that felt like they fit and my big toe really hurt after 1 hour only.
I appreciate the video. I had been wearing minimalist “barefoot” shoes for 2 years when I stumbled upon Correct Toes. And videos about reversing bunions. I do not have a first toe bunions, but I do have fifth toe bunions that I would like to correct. I have been wearing correct toes for about 4 months now, but I do not (and have not for a while) think they splay my toes quite wide enough, even with additional foam in the fifth toe spacer. I’m really not seeing much progress on actually reversing the bunion, but my toes are certainly more flexible than they were. In other words I do see benefits, just not the particular benefit I was hoping for. Are there any other options to splay my toes a bit wider? I have found socks that do, but they are meant for rest and not day wear. Any thoughts would be appreciated if you have the time. Thank you.
Happy to help! We’d recommend the idea of sizing up, this would need to be better assessed. If you wouldn’t mind sending photos of your current size on your feet to our info@correcttoes.com team they will be able to address your concerns.
I'm curious why the melding together of the 2nd and 3rd metatarsal was not addressed? Also, the use of the big, blue, soft MELT ball is the correct ball to use for your last exercise.
Hi Lu V, the primary purpose of the video was just to provide some general education on exercises to reverse bunions, not necessarily to delve into the mechanics behind their development. If you'd like to hear more about bunions check out: ua-cam.com/video/LCrvF55HYiw/v-deo.html . Thanks for letting us know!
I wish that they put an approximate time length to do these exercises? 15 minutes how many does a day type of instructions? Anyone know the instructions?
These exercises are meant to be a progression. It is entirely unique to the individual. If you can hold the stretch, exercise, etc. for 5 minutes great. If not start with what is comfortable and slowly increase your time or intensity. Avoid any pain by going slow and you will eventually be able to hold stretches for 15 or so minutes.
This is amazing information. Will it help people no matter what age they are? I'm in my mid-60s. I can't even walk anymore. I can't walk and I can't stand for very long either.
Hi Daria, thanks for reaching out! Great question- in this case, we would recommend a remote consult with one of our doctors to figure out a specialized treatment plan. Here is some information on how to go about setting up an appointment if you're interested: www.nwfootankle.com/services/#remote-consultations Thanks again, and please let us know if there's any way in which we can help!
You have a foot where the hallux is still here while gone on the other. I'm the same. My right foot corrected quite fast (few month at most), but i'm working on my left foot since 2 years now and things are hawfully slow. When I go to osteopaths, they often see some issues with cuboïd bone. I had a severe ankle flip on this foot when I was young too. I guess I'm going to make some video footage for Dr Ray, he might have some idea, because I my opinion is that something else is in the way to recovery, influenceing from distance. Something might be wrong somewhere else in my foot/ankle, that's a complexe structure anyway. Would be great if DR Ray could try to figure out some more complicated problems
Hey did your bunion on your right foot realy reversed??? I have bunions on my left and right feet. They are realy mild scenerio but they started to hurt a few days ago end I am preaty woried Pleas reaplay
@@nobady4830 yup, at least one did. I guess you might get all the info from channel "Northwest Foot & Ankle" interresting, especially about Dr. Ray McClanahan explaining he was a good foot churgeon and when he had to correct his very feets he just couldn't and re-learned every thing. I guess that's in one of his oldest vid, maybe ?v=XIS_evkfI3A . Don't forget : 1/ first right shoes, then socks, then exercices, then maybe some devices to speed it up and 2/ it took years for change the natural shape of your foot, it might take some time to correct it BUT if you don't stop the trend root (the shoes), nothing will help. There are now PLENTY of accurate shoes now for (very) CHEAP on Ali or else btw. My right bunion doesn't disturb me at all now but still didn't fully reverse as did my left, even I don't know why, after 7 or 8 years leaving stupid occidental foot flagelation fashion. edit : forgot to mention that I was (recetly on stop because of an accident) an ultratrail runner and I never injured myself doing such long distances after going plant based diet + using appropriate footwear. Before that I had tons of week/months lasting injuries barely running marathons
@@AtlantisArch Thanks for reapling. I personly wont try a plant based diet, beacuse I have T and a more carnivor diet seams to help whith my tinnitus end tank you for reaplying again .
My shoes have mostly been wide toed. Did a LOT of walking last summer over about three weeks, and on the last day, boom, massive pain and whatvappeared to be a bunion. But arent they supposed to be an over time thing? Pains gone, but the "ball" on that join is sticking out, a lot.
Hmmm... when talking about strengthening the adductor, she didn't mention the arch. For me, plantar fasciitis has been the largest contributor to big-toe misalignment and strengthening the muscles from arch right thru to the hip essential.
@@timyatcak3292 Morning, Tim. Don't know about planes. Like poorly designed footware, compromised arches cause pronation, which also leads the big toe to become misaligned and fail to carry its proportionate share of body weight. Rewatching the video, what the therapist did by manually straightening her big toe with her hands, I propose accomplishing with the musculature of the foot and leg itself (perhaps assisted manually at first -- the toes do become relatively disfunctional individually from wearing shoes). Perhaps this gets back to your planes reference... the adductor hallucis would prolly be considered antagnostic to the abductor hallucis which participates in the "extension" the big toe and the arch.
@@babuddha Foot muscles DO NOT HAVE the strength to overcome the forces through the foot a weight bearing. Since FORCE= mass x acceleration these muscles do not have the ability to overcome that force over the 5000 to 7000 steps per day

I don't wear high heels And to toes have been crooked since I was a kid. I was told the cause of my bunion was that i stand with my weight at the front of my feet.
Thanks for checking out the video. A lot of the time the issues that we have as kids can stem from the improper footwear we wear when our feet are particularly malleable (when we are very young). That said, there can be any number of reasons why you might develop a bunion, but the exercises above can help regardless of the reason!
Patricia Mesa Really? Thank you for that knowledge. My big toes have been wonky since the 4th grade. (Well, That’s when all my elementary school friends started making fun of me when I wore flip flops) IDK if I walk w my weit up front or not? My big toes have just gotten worse w age. Honestly, I only have what I would consider a “bunion lump” on my left foot and it’s small. It truly looks like it just a crooked toe. When I pull it back. It’s a normal looking toe, no knot lump whatever? There’s just an inch gap between my big toe and the one next to it. That looks weird. 😂
Natalie Rozean when I got older, standing a lot at my job., putting all my weight improperly in my feet gave me bunions. I massage them with gua sha tools that I bought from Amazon. One can really massage more effectively with those tools
Juanita Nixon Thank you! EVERYONE in my family has them, but I’ve definitely spent more time on my feet then off. I was embarrassed of my foot size when young and crammed my feet into too small of shoes. THEN I developed heel spurs and walked anyway I could to find relief. It’s a wonder I even have toes!

This natural approach can take anywhere from six months to a year of consistency. Pain can often reduce within 4-6 weeks. We recommend 5-10 minutes of your day, slowly increasing your time as you feel more comfortable. You can think of this as any other exercise where you increase your weight, resistance, time, etc.
Hi Aleksandra! We are using a small resistance band and ball that comes in a 'Hand and Foot Treatment Kit' by MELT: www.meltmethod.com/store/product/hand-and-foot-treatment-kit/ For a possibly more affordable at-home solution for a resistance band, you could use a very thick rubber band (just cautious of it snapping if there are small tears in it!)

I hope you had a minimally painful and rewarding trek! ❤

Perfectly consise!!!! Thank you
Im so relieved i have found this. Im in severe pain
I have bunions for years
I broke my second toe and it ended up as a bendy fracture
Which after a few years pushed the toe towards the other toes which made my bunions very painful
I have hope
Thank you
I look forward to your videos! Keep up the good work. You've changed my life, Dr. Ray!
Thank you for the feedback and I hope we can continue to positively impact your foot health!
It is our pleasure to offer knowledge and tips on how to improve your foot health. Let us know if you ever have questions in the future and we'd be happy to help.

This is acquired about
4 yrs ago, thanks for your time and patience
Wow, I just discovered your channel. I will try this. God bless

did it work?
Did it work?
Thank you...
How would you correct the second toe that overlapping on top of the big toe that has the bunion?
So if I do those exercises it will go back on its place?? Got the separators and only taking it off when showering or out of the house.. thank you for sharing this short and great video.
I ordered Correct Toes several months ago & have found them to be the best device to wear daily. Will also try these exercises! Thanks!
did they correct them?
sarah x I wore them religiously, but during the pandemic, I’ve not even thought about it, I guess b/c I don’t go anywhere. I was going to yoga classes almost daily. Now I’m just barefoot at home. The exercises do help. I need to get back on those too. Thanks for the reminder.
Do you wear them throughout the day? How long did it take you to get where you could do that?
Very helpful thank you.
thank you this advice does help
Lol the tan in that foot!
I used the pool pass bracelet from an apartment complex for the band to hook around the big toes. Cheap & effective!
Love it!
Good luck with that. You will need it. A lot of luck.
I sure wish I had known this before I had my bunion repair😢 I had 4 months of rehab, about 2 months of it in a cast, then boot.
how many months will it take to treat this bunion & have things back to looking normal & straight?
Excellent information..
It might work for a mild problem. Unfortunately, it does not work if you have a severe bunion problem in addition to flat foot.
Vou começar a fazer. Alguns exercícios. Pois eu sinto muita dor no dedão
This really works wonders I saw results within a month
no way !!
What did you do ?
Diah Andre what u do
@Diah Andre No way! What did you do? How do you fix the little toe side bunionettes?
Why you asking what did she do she just said she tried the exercises and it helped. People really?
great video
"increase alignment" By how much after how long? Would be great to cite scientific studies or at least provide video/photo/x-ray of somebody claiming to have done such exercises before/after.
Exactly, Those little disclaimers at the, "If you have arthritis, go to podiatrist (who will tell you it's too late); they can't be fixed--just helped be less painful. These are preventative exercises. Another cause of the outward ankle twist is leg length discrepancy, which forces the leg to twist to keep balance mid-to-late stride.

Can you please recommend what shoes to buy.I cannot find ones that look like the one you showed

Thank you!😊❤
Thats Amazing 😊🦋🐛🥀🙏
Is it worth sizing up on Correct Toes? Even with the recommended splint for bunions inserted in the largest slot in my Correct Toes, I find that my hallux still tracks toward my second toe, because I have a large space between the first and second toes. I've been wearing CT's for 9 mo. and my progress for bunion correction has stalled. Thanks!
I would add a big piece of compressed cotton instead
I have that , I do wear a straightner , only for a short while , because after a while i do notice that the bone in the large toe does start hurting . Do I just wear this for short periods of time ?? Thank you .
good video. i have bunion and was considering surgerybut before i do i will try the exercise. thank you.
the one on her left foot is so big wym?
I’m so impressed by how much those feet can stretch
Is it possible that i have the same issue where my toe is bending or leaning to the other fingers without having any sort of pain? Because in my case (my right food for instance) the toe is leaning a bit to the right, same problem with the other foot, but no pain whatsoever 😅 .. and thankyou so much for uploading this i will make it a habit of exercising these ☺️ appreciate it.
Yes its possible. Im no expert but mine started young, so i also have no pain but clearly have bunions, worsening over time might i add.
If you don't then the muscle will largely just be pulled along.
en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Adductor_hallucis_muscle
having a hard time picturing what youre talking about .
I agree. Erik Syring's comments are not clear; it's like only understandable by another doctor.
When you typed that did you really think anyone would understand what you were trying to say? Honestly...
Thank you for taking the time !
I’m going try this!!!!
Omygosh! Thanks So much!
Thanks great vid BUT No mention re the link to ankle mobility also being a factor in the misalignment - doing this combined with ankle strengthening exercises have helped me
🙌🏽
Will this actually permanently align the toes?
You are soo good
I don't wear tight shoes but my toe was starting to move over so at night I slept with my heel on the other foot, between the big toe and the next toe, spreading the big toe outward and it kept it from slanting inward, straightening it up over time.
I once tried shoes that felt like they fit and my big toe really hurt after 1 hour only.
would love links to products
شكرا لك ❤️
I'm curious why the melding together of the 2nd and 3rd metatarsal was not addressed? Also, the use of the big, blue, soft MELT ball is the correct ball to use for your last exercise.
Hi Lu V, the primary purpose of the video was just to provide some general education on exercises to reverse bunions, not necessarily to delve into the mechanics behind their development. If you'd like to hear more about bunions check out: ua-cam.com/video/LCrvF55HYiw/v-deo.html . Thanks for letting us know!
feels good
I wish that they put an approximate time length to do these exercises?
Thanks again, and please let us know if there's any way in which we can help!
Thank you will try this 👍
You have a foot where the hallux is still here while gone on the other.
They are realy mild scenerio but they started to hurt a few days ago end I am preaty woried
Pleas reaplay

Only problem is that everything along the plantar fascia is on one plane and the hallux valgus is in a completely different one
@@babuddha a message from La La land

Is there an online store I can buy shoes like that?? I really want a pair. Those shoes are pretty uncommon. I live in Canada..not sure where to look
A lot of our shoe recommendations are actually willing to ship up to Canada--check out Lems Shoes or Altra. Both are great starter shoes, and both companies are able to ship internationally. Thanks for checking out the video!
S Cila it is called Vivobarefoot and they sell them online. Enjoy.
How long should each of the exercises be performed? And im guessing everyday?
I don't wear high heels
And to toes have been crooked since I was a kid.
Natalie Rozean just get some gua sha tools and massage the knots out. You’ll save your fingers that way 😊
I have a mild bunion on my right foot. Will this reverse the bump or the whole bunion? I might be starting one on my left foot as well.

Where do i get that toe separators you have on ?
For how long and how often should we use these exercises to help the alignment on our big toe?
This natural approach can take anywhere from six months to a year of consistency. Pain can often reduce within 4-6 weeks. We recommend 5-10 minutes of your day, slowly increasing your time as you feel more comfortable. You can think of this as any other exercise where you increase your weight, resistance, time, etc.
Very helpful. Boy your feet sure look good. I've got a ways to go.
no they dont
Very good very thanks
So you don't need surgery to fix this sometimes?
where do you get that band to stretch your big toes??
Hi!
Can you tell me where I can get the resistance band and massage ball used at 1:34?
Thank you :)
Best,
A.
Hi Aleksandra! We are using a small resistance band and ball that comes in a 'Hand and Foot Treatment Kit' by MELT: www.meltmethod.com/store/product/hand-and-foot-treatment-kit/
For a possibly more affordable at-home solution for a resistance band, you could use a very thick rubber band (just cautious of it snapping if there are small tears in it!)
@@correcttoes Typically you can find a band like that around broccoli. Instead of the ball, a wine cork works.
