I remember when the game first game out, and it only had Ancient Egypt, Pirate seas, and the Wild West. The crazy part was that I remember them not having any islands, they each had their own map up until far future I think. They changed that pretty early on when they added Big wave beach, or maybe right before I think. I liked the look of the maps more than the line on floating islands we have now.
I miss everything from the old Plants VS Zombies, its designs and musics. I don’t care about all the overpowered new plants, I just want my memories back…

It surprises me how little effort they put into the Lost City podiums until Modern Day, and the new ones are much worse as they do NOT have animation, which is more of the same with the Gargantuar podiums, I imagine if these had been better and remade by other people, don't you think?
They removed it for memory space, ends up having a lot of giant animated podiums really has a toll, remaking them to be even more detailed would only worsen things
I still have those island on my old ipad. I couldn't update the game anymore so it just stopped at the modern day update. Never got the arena mode nor penny's persuit lol
the old islands give me some sonic cd vibes, with all the good and bad future stuff. at first, the island has a slightly more macabre and dark look. but when we defeated zomboss, the island looks more beautiful and full of life, really giving this feeling that we got rid of the evil that tormented it and all that. (in fact, both games involve time travel!)

As an animator I understand why they decided to change it and simply the designs. When you're creating a game alot of people are involved and usually the higher ups will want a consistent look even if its generic. Also important to note that they probably are targeting the younger audience with the game, so simpler the shapes and design the better it can attract the target audience.
