After about a year since my initial Plants vs. Zombies Lost Bits video, we're back again with Plants vs. Zombies 2! And much like with the first game, this sequel has a TON of unused stuff, so much so that this will need multiple videos to cover most of it again. Anyways, for this this first video, we'll go over numerous scrapped concepts and unused alternate designs for a bunch of Plants as well as Zombies! Hope you enjoy!

This game was originally going to take place on a farm, that's why we see so many farming elements in this game's beta. It was going to be the whole game theme, but then they decided to make about going on a road trip around the world before finally settling on traveling time. We can still see a bit of that road trip idea with Penny being an RV and the idea of simply traveling. Places like Big Wave Beach and the Lost City can easily be places like Hawaii and South America respectively.
Lost City fits Central/South America better, though...
Lost City is in Central America, not Africa. The temple that the world takes place in front of is very clearly inspired by the Mayans, who lived in Central America.

The flower plant at 17:10 seems more like a concept for the Ampliflower, a scrapped plant originally unlocked in Far Future that would've increased the attack speed/damage of plants around it.

Definitely for Hot Potato.
The colour of the skin along with the insides make it look more akin to a baked potato.
On top of that, the FIRST batch of Beet concept art was supposed to be a returning plant from Adventures (along with Bamboo Shoot), whereas the second batch is specifically for Phat Beet. (Hence the fatter face!)

3:23 it’s cool how the design of the time portal was pretty much reused for other time portals in future games. Like the town hall portal or the bfn multiplayer portal

Personally, the final designs works better in-game, as the armor's colors remain consistent throughout the game(eg: roadcones are orange, buckets are gray), which helps players to identify the type of zombie immediately no matter which world they're playing in, and even in a huge crowd of zombies.
This is actually the most likely reason they went with simpler designs over objectively cooler looking ones. Like. PopCap playtests the heck out of their games, they definitely had a good reason for downgrading a design like that, esp considering at that point in PvZ2's development, I don't think they had been bought by EA _just yet_ so there was certainly more effort in all aspects at that time, including testing
EA is just the publishers. They gave Popcap all the control. Stop with the goddamn EA BAD POPCAP GOOD hivemind, I have seen tireless amounts of PVZ2 downfall videos and I had enough when I said it's enough, it's enough
likewise i understand the simplification of certain designs too. a lot of the concept designs are cooler and more visually interesting, but in a game thats already got so much stuff happening on screen, its best to keep things simple so its easier to read when its busy. i think everyone wouldve loved to see more visually complex zombies and things, but it would introduce too much noise

Alot of these ideas are really good and creative in general. Brings me back to when pvz2 was regularly getting new worlds which is a nice callback.
Speaking of PVZ 2, I would honestly LOVE to see Tetrabit cover the sheer amount of exclusive content in the Chinese versions of PVZ2. The amount of stuff there is insane.
Yeah I just hate china edition as I am jealous of how much they have I just hope when they eventually need to renew to contract it will allow the international version to get all the china content.

The farm world was made before the time travel concept was decided on for pvz 2. The original plan was for the game to be in a farm with the different worlds being about the season. This got scrapped due to them running out of ideas that worked with the farm concept. This would later turn into the player traveling to a different areas like in the football and France world concepts, before deciding to go with time travel when they were conceptualizing the Egypt world. This was all confirm by one of the lead artists for pvz 2 in a video call “the art of reanimating pvz” when talking about the art process for pvz 2

The "high tech bush" looks like it would be a future variant of the spikeweed plant...and based on its appearance, the spines likely would have been retractible. And i believe the plant to the right of it is an earlier version of the sweet potato as it does somewhat resemble it in appearance and its "sexy" appearance likely being an indicator for this ability

So the Concept art for the Phat Beet not only reveals early designs, if not a completely different plant just called Beet which appeared much earlier in a Facebook Game Called Plants Vs. Zombies adventures, this plant was an early version of bonk Choy, then when you mentioned the early designs for lava guava that was concept art for the hot potato, the first plant you unlock when going to frostbite Caves and last the tactical cuke is actually in the files of the final game as a sprite for a seed packet, this sprite was actually added first in the international version during the development of far future
16:12 interestingly, while the design was changed for Phat Beet in PVZ2, the spin-off PVZ Heroes has two cards called Super-Phat Beets and Tough Beets that look a lot closer to that original concept
I think my favorite part of the concept sketches are the personality that the plants get. Like for 9:50-9:58 the plants can be seen actually reacting to what’s happening in front of them. It just shows that the artists were having a bit of fun designing these characters.

It is supposed to be a concept-art of "Explode-O-Nut", this plant is of course a "Seed packet prenium" plant...
It is also a plant that appears in the "first PvZ", but it can be seen only in the mini-game of "Wall-nut Bowling". (One of the "Day" levels)
Papa Tetra sure is feeding us well with interesting lost bits from a game that deserved better.

Interestingly, Coconut Bowler (the palm tree) and Bamboom actually had files in some versions before the Big Wave Beach released.
Coconut Bowler became Bowling Bulb and Bamboom became Banana Launcher.
A little correction: The plant at 18:58 is actually an early version of the Phat Beet.

I hope they do like a definitive version for consoles soon. I and a lot of my friends just still feel so burned by the absurd monetization when the game first launched. Even though the game is as fun as ever like the first, EA just took it way too far.

Man I wish EA was actually smart and put some of the things in the Chinese version into all versions, like why not, it could really only make the game better. The Chinese version has a LEVEL CREATOR for crying out loud. So many people would love that, but they gotta restrict it to the Chinese version because EA.

When it came to the farm level concept. The scarecrow would have worked similarly to the surfer zombie, another cut features was animals, since animals have brains, zombies would have tried to steal them.

3:05 This has to do with the plot of the game, which revolves around time travel: Zomboss is ALSO time travelling. He's following you. His temporal onslaughts are mixes of zombies he brought from our time that adapted, as well as zombifying (canonical term) people that exist in the actual time. The Explorer Zombies came from our time (approximately), but the LEVELS take place 4500 years ago. Zomboss' final -form- big attack is literally called "Project Paradox," where he brings zombies from all times into Modern Day.
16:13 these concepts aren't the same as the final plant shown, Phat Beet is a functional replacement of Gloom-shroom, while this concept was "Beet," a plant exclusive to Plants vs. Zombies Adventures (the facebook game that existed for about a year), which functions the same as Bonk Choy. I see why the confusion exists but this would be like saying that Concept Spear Mint is an "early version of Spear-mint" - they're not the same concept, they're different concepts based on the same IRL plants. (to make the point easier to understand: The bowling Palm Tree probably became Bowling Bulb, the same concept based on a different IRL plant)

I remember in early releases for Plants vs. Zombies 2, there was a power pinch, it's now replaced with power snow. Also Tactical Cuke does appear in later games like Garden Warfare 2.

Another thing you didn't show:
In 1.5 version, there's the files for Far Future (plants, early zombies, levels and the map for the Star Map System), Dark Ages (the sketch of the lawn, beta plants, beta zombies, beta tombstones) and Time Twister (beta map icon, beta levels). A guy called lanzacrepers managed to port all that content into 1.4 and make it functional (this guy literally has the resources to break hardcode - reverse engineer the base code of the game and add custom logic to it)
I think this is the first time where I’ve preferred a game’s concept art over final in almost every example - especially with zombies. The more unique concepts cut back just for simplicity is very disappointing, I can see so much more potential here.
my theory with the paris and barn world is that maybe pvz 2 originally was gonna "Around the world" 1930s egypt, paris and maybe the US south?

Oh this is so cool. Just by watching I can tell what the story was. You get chased out the house and go to other locations around town but then get chased through those same locations but at other places in time. That would be so cool. Not to mention it would make more sense lol
