Hey Thorin, really enjoying your Thoughts. Rather fascinating how you keep talking all the way, your knowledge about the LCS, individual players, previous tournaments and even the fucking NBA is astounding. Cheers
It seems like ideally you field both of these types of people on your team. It seems like people like rekkles or berj make really good second carries and are a part of the system that you build around your nukeduck or forg1ven. The fact that they don't have to be the focal point or star of the team plays to their strengths as this relieves a lot of the responsibility and pressure they seem to shy away from. At the same time you have the dominate carry but you also have second carry with the a comparable level of skill and talent but who is willing to take that secondary role. Carry from the outskirts. Like a Dade /deft combo on SSB.
Yes, I agree. The right approach is actually to pair these kinds of players, since they tend to have different strengths as well as weaknesses. A couple of famous examples of these pairings from sports would be Michael Jordan (aggressive, confident alpha) and Scottie Pippen (more hesitant, all-around teamplay-first talent) in the 90s and Kobe Bryant (aggressive, confident alpha) and Pau Gasol (more hesitant, versatile-skilled multi-position player) in the late 2000s. In CS we had some pairings along those line: Potti (confident clutch player) and HeatoN (big fragging but not as composed under pressure) in the early 2000s and GeT_RiGhT (confident fragger) with f0rest (shies away from the star role but has a high skill level peak) in the late 2000s.
Thooorin I think you unwittingly just gave a great defense of Hai in C9 -- He is the (overly sometimes) arrogant player that the rest of the team needs to fall into line after. He also takes full responsibility AFAIK and has a captain's mentality.
masterchip27 I have to agree with this, maybe that is what I love of C9. May I add that time to time even the "go crazy" swap between Meteos and Hi, and even the bot lane has his own moment when Lemon go crazy and Sneaky have to follow him and other times is Sneaky who go crazy and Lemons seems to have not enough fingers in his hands to follow up him. And that is whats make C9 different of the others.. the brilliance of their ability to swap that "captain" role beside who is the true mastermind/shout caller and beside more deep strategic concepts
I know almost nothing about the NBA, but I truly love all of the basketball references/concepts Thorin always throws in to tie into the bigger picture of what he's talking about.
The biggest challenge I see with the players you mention here (Forg1ven and Nukeduck) is that there is not enough competent coaches to refine and polish that sort of strength. There is no Phil Jackson equivalent coaches in western competitive LoL. Most coaches are friends and/or of equal age, roughly same personality, life eperience, maturity level. They dont have the ability to see and refine these aspects of their personalities and make it to be a real strength for the player personally and as a strength to the team! I think a result of all these things are that most teams shy away or are hesitant to sign them as they have a reputation of being diffucult to work with, toxic or any other diveresly defined, overused negative word.
Amazing content Thorin, I Don't understand this TSM fanboys who claims you are a bad journalist. But I guess their love for the TSM organisation blinds them. Anyways nice content! Keep it Up!
I think XiaoWeiXiao was this kind of guy any time he didn't pick a utility champion. People expected him to be a passive laner when he entered the LCS because of his cs numbers in the challenger league, and they were shocked by his aggression on assassins. He was the kind of player always trying to get solo kills in lane. Same thing with the rest of the old LMQ. Vasili would dodge skillshots (as an ADC) by walking towards the other person. Ackerman once hid in a bush until the 4 minute mark in the 2v1 meta and when he saw Thresh and Imaqtpie went to finally step in the bush, he started laning. He was like level 4 when Zion was level 1, because he took that risk. I think they just needed more time to develop as a team -- if they played together as long as Cloud9, I think it would've been great to watch them play. Obviously, they didn't exactly play like other "western" teams, so they might not be the best example of this confident western team/players, but I think they're still a good example.
Thorin is right, compare Neymar back in his Santos days to Eden Hazard back in his Lille days, both players by many considered to be the succesors of Ronaldo and Messi, both 1 year away from each other , just like they are. Hazard scored 36 goals in 147 matches, while on chelsea he scored 31 in 89 games, Neymar who had the mindset in Santos, scored 54 goals in only 109 games, and now already scored 20 in 39 games at Barcelona. You could argue that they are equal in skill, but on paper this wouldn't seem, Neymar demanded everything in Santos and would on occasions just 1v6 the opposing team and score a goal, where Hazard , equally as skilled, wouldn't take this control, he was a top class player, hence why he's now on the #1 Premier League team, but just didn't show it. Neymar was so confident that he knew he would win, destroy the enemy and win all the championships, Hazard had the same skill to do that, but his mindset wasn't like it. Now they're both in considered Top 5 teams in the world, being amongst the best there, your skill doesn't mean anything if you don't have the mindset to back it up.
I really do like a lot of the content Thooorin's been putting out. Don't really like how he is exceedingly critical of players/coaches sometimes (not bad at all in this vid), but I've realized he only does it because he's really passionate about e-sportst. This is, of course, more good than bad.
I feel like Thorin actually would make a pretty good coach on a general level (or maybe general manager?). Even if he doesn't have as much specific champion knowledge as some people players could take care of that by funneling him information about the minutia. After all he's really knowledgeable about the core concepts of league
you make fair points. i admit, i never saw nukeduck playing.. but from what i heard :"let faker have his champ" "let regi have his best champ" sounds more like hybris than arrogance..
I feel that you do not understand what was being said in the video. The point was he wanted to show that he was the best and the only way was to show that a champ one of the best was very skilled at could be beat by him. It makes total sense in his personality and would been genius if his gameplay could back it up
OdysseyZZGaming "I feel that you do not understand" god, always the same. I completely understood what he said. Thing is, he gave them their champs and got dumpstered. And from what i´ve seen now, he is no faker level midlaner. "would been genius if his gameplay could back it up" Yeah, but he couldnt. We will see next split. Can be hilarious with that attitude.
Fakers personality and calmness remind of the same characteristics Roger Federer has wouldn't you agree? They both are/were the best in their sport and seem to have this really cool, calm and easy going personality. Even their playstyles are similar in terms of both playing with finesse and making things look a lot easier than they are. Which to me at least seems like another style or attitude only the very best posses. Just a thought.
Thooorin faker isnt always the zen god either. when he's playing champions he loves like zed ahri leblanc ori and something happens that either sets him behind or denies him kills or causes him to die or w/e you can see it in his stare when the camera pans on him that he could punch a fucking 8 year old to get release lol. but most of the time (nowadays) when he's completely shitting on kids you ll see a smirk at best not cause he cant be the guy laughing like he used to or making arrogant semi serious comments in interviews and all but because his actual upbringing and massive success and appreciation/glorification have all culminated in shaping him into the most professional esport persona (at least in LoL) now.
I think that's true of the now Faker and now Federer the now confirmed god status guy with a constant spotlight. However you would see that confidence peek with his earlier reactions during/post game or when all the Koreans came to NA and had random names (barcodes) Faker *The* Korean everyone wanted to study went with the name barcode killer over an inconspicuous name.
Thooorin Also I don't think we get to see the 'real' Faker very often, I think he's more of a Froggen type, knows he's really fucking good, only example that comes to mind is at allstars when he takes xiyangs syndra, or whatever his name was, OMG's mid laner, despite not practicing it properly just to wreck him on his best champion, or maybe when he laughed at S3 worlds on Gragas. I could be wrong, and these aren't the best examples, but he's so far into the typical Korean PR face it's hard to tell. Maybe on stream when he does mad plays always looks around to see people's reactions, you wouldn't think a super chill zen guy would be seeking validation from solo queue plays so often. Again I could be completely wrong with all of this ^^
Hey thorin I hated you back when I first saw you on summoning insight bashing the he'll out of tsm because I was and still am a fan of them but you really are one of the best journalist is league. Thanks for keeping up the quality content.
I think a lot of the problems we have here in the West are the personality types of the majority of League players. A lot of League players just played the game to enjoy it and a lot of them are the nerdier and quiet types. Of course you will always get the dominant-minded players coming along but when you consider the archetype of people that play League it's no wonder a lot of our Western talents tank on the big stage. I can't comment on the Eastern players as I do not know enough about their eSports scene. Also, I only somewhat agree with the "assholes are easier to work with". I definitely think you're right in saying that their problems are (theoretically) easier to fix but what about what the "assholes" do to their teams mentality. There are confident players like Froggen who are strong-willed.but haven't been known to cause strife within the team. I think having a true "asshole" is probably just as bad for the team moral as having a softer player is for their individual performance.
true about diamond being angry after losing i remember his interview affter CW game he kept on saying if i took noctorn vs Roccat i would win like 3 times and sjokz wasn't even talking about the roccat game
FNATIC got a taste of what Diamond's anger is like when they first blooded his Evelynn in game 2 of the IEM VIII Cologne final and he went mental and tore them new assholes.
Mohammed Alharbi Was that when rekkles played ashe? Those were the first games i saw from rekkles ever and i thought what a stupid decision to replace puzsu with feeding rekkles lol. Nowdays i can easily take my words back on that tho.
We should get Nukeduck, Forg1ven, DiamondProx, BigBossEddy and... maybe Wickd... and then bunch them all together in the ultimate EU superiority hype team =P
konusRTV That's where wickd is not quite like the others, yeah, but I don't really remember any one else who would fulfill the requirements Rob Hendrikx Not the point, really, but all of these do have this same arrogance, can ALMOST make an all cocky bastard "dream team"
I would like to ask, what happens if your star player is the support player? Such as Madlife. I don't think you can put everything on him or do you find players that fits his play style? I'm unsure if he is arrogant as I don't watch OGN.
Hey Thooorin, what do you think about arrogance as a factor in a journalist's persona, whether merely perceived or real? Does it have an effect on the real or perceived objectivity of someone's content? My friends disliked some of the sarcastic comments you made on Twitter, and I was trying to defend you.
You say in the west but there are only a handful of people that have shown no choke/nerves/throw issues in the history of league currently there is probably only 3 or 4 total players that fit that bill, uzi, mata, kakao, gogoing and faker. I may get hate for the rest of ssw but literally every other samsung player sans mata has shown serious nerves or choke issues at some point. For less accomplished players I would argue that meteos and sneaky atm also fit that bill they just arent a good enough team to show that internationally outside the west. Nukeduck just fills the arrogance role which many players such as double lift do. Imp also fits that role he just has an amazing other 4 players, he has had major choke and nerves issues but is a top player in the world and a world champion. The problem with this issue is that it is very uncommon to both have the mentality that you are the best and for that to be legitimate appraisal. Great topic and discussion though(needed to be included as I know you have nerve and confidence issues thoorin we shall get you a life coach for this :P)
Thorin has such a great mind set. He looks past all the irrelevant shit that people thinks important like oh my god so and so got a penta(doesnt matter). He said this is a person this is how do they play why do they play that way how can we improve it is basicly what i got from this. Why are you not a coach ?
I liked the video and you have a valid point but I think you also repeat yourself a little bit. If I remember correctly you already talked about Rekkles' problem in at least 3 videos, and in 2 of them he was the main topic. There are a lot of players in the LCS and I'm sure you could've found another examples. In general you always mention the same players (Froggen, Doublelift, Rekkles, ...), I get they are very well known but that is not a good quality for the so-called e-sports hitorian. Try to diversify a little bit or some people may think that you just like to bash on Rekkles (for example) because you do not like the guy, even if you have a valid point.
lack of determination is why bjerg and reckless wont demand to be the stars cant really fix it lol, perhaps over time they become professional enough to fit into any team with their skillset but they likely wont be focal points cause they cant handle that responsibility let bjerg be mid for clg and he'll flourish with dl as the focal point, reckless should do well at alliance though he's only going to be a very solid carry as opposed to a star carry basically the teams that recruit them would be looking for stats to complete a team instead of build a team around them, they just wont handle it imo nukeduck and forgiven are determined enough to prove themselves as the best, so they'll seek to go about doing so so is uzi, brilliant carry not only cause the team funnels gold into him but cause he wants that gold cause he knows he is the one who is best capable to put it to effective use on his team wow...after watching this i'm actually excited to see how alliance do next split
This idea of Alpha-Beta males/females is such an oversimplification of human relations. Sort of disappointed that Thoorin had to rely on a bit of it to complete his analogy.
It aint that hard Thorin. Why do you think teams have been successful in the past with single shot callers. All you need to get the best out of less arrogant players is trust within the team in a good shot caller.
you are making good analogies but you left out the opposite end of the spectrum when talking the nba... you left out the consumate team player in tim duncan.... hes the antithesis of your arguement.
Thorin, Nukeduck did not get dumpsterd by faker would say faker got carried those games he play i think that Nukeduck outplayed him mechanically, individually and the funny thing is im black Nukeduck is fucking rasist i hate him but he played really well against Faker. Thoring you are really smart but your are blind about who is the best behind the scenes i think Nukeduck is a god mechanically, and can beat faker in lane and he won in lane all of the games and outplayed him in 1v1 etc. And dude 1 more thing, maybe he 1v1ed Ryu like a god but Look at Ryu where he is today, yes language barrier blablabla but still if was at the rate of top two midlaner in season 3, the truth he was a awerege midlaner with good coaches. So conclusion. 1. i suck at english, 2. I think Nukeduck only mechanically is better than Faker. 3. Faker is the best mid but he is not a god. My opinion!
Can't say that I don't enjoy this but I really don't want Thorin to run out of subjects.
well its the off season... literally nothing is happening.
Won't happen, not least because there will be lots of topical discussions possible during the season.
Thooorin can you stop thinking and do SI with sexycristo
I KNOW! Thooorin please comment! edit; oh shit never mind lol "show replies"
Thooorin Please don't do a 2015's "best of thoorin's thoughts" though. Cause that's so cliche.
Holy shit, that reference to lose yourself and then that "what was it with your father that crippled your confidence". I fucking laughed my ass off
Really enjoying your vids dude !
My favourite video from you so far, I love thinking about these things and this never came to my mind, great listen.
Thorin is slowly succeeding in becoming the Day 9 of League.
I don't even have to ruin every superlative in the book explaining how wonderful every player in the top 100 is :>
Hey Thorin, really enjoying your Thoughts. Rather fascinating how you keep talking all the way, your knowledge about the LCS, individual players, previous tournaments and even the fucking NBA is astounding. Cheers

hey dordin, can you pray in my challenjour team, you can be mod laner, we need a europia because were trying to mimic how lcs team nationals are, gg
How do you manage to comment on every league video in existence
Jack Nelson Dedication

I like you r talking about lol , you know and understand so much more than some people who are in lol for years. keep it going man! my full support
I'm Both a TSM and Rekkles fan and i find this content so true and very intressting , your recept videos have been gold man keep it up :)
One of my favorite videos you have made thoorin!
Thorin and Monte are the best spokesman in the whole league of legends community. Their knowledge and opinions are always great and enjoyable to hear
Keep it Up!
I'm a TSM fan, and I like Thorin's Thoughts. Can't confirm.
supposedlyreal ur a fan not a "fanboi" :P its a difference
AzraeltheRightous Yeaaah that could be it.
TSM fans aren't the only ones man, stop being so ignorant.
well memed Xd
Pretty impressive the amount of content this guy is putting out during the off season, can't wait until the season starts

That eminem lmfao

You really, really know your stuff man.
"moms spaghetti, knees weak arms are heavy" HAHAHAHAHA
Thorin can u please talk about Pobelter?
@Thooorin
If you are hated, then that means you have an impact on the world.
Anyone know what Thorin's wallpaper says? Looks like its maybe in Italian ?
19:50
You can't tell me Lemondogs was a bad team....
Hey Thoorin, do you write down what you're going to say? Nice videos
Hey Thorin have you ever watched pro poker? i feel like you would enjoy it
I think Nukeduck will perform better than froggen next season, I just have that feeling.
We should get Nukeduck, Forg1ven, DiamondProx, BigBossEddy and... maybe Wickd... and then bunch them all together in the ultimate EU superiority hype team =P
lel.
It's not season 2 pal
certainly not wickd
good toplaners can perform on more than 2-3 champions
Froggen, Rekkles, Jankos, Yellowstar, Freddy is pretty much the undebatable EU allstar team
konusRTV That's where wickd is not quite like the others, yeah, but I don't really remember any one else who would fulfill the requirements
Rob Hendrikx Not the point, really, but all of these do have this same arrogance, can ALMOST make an all cocky bastard "dream team"

nice thought-series
A pro should always be confident of their skills.

Shouldn't it be "The Brilliance of Arrogance"?

Nukeduck just fills the arrogance role which many players such as double lift do. Imp also fits that role he just has an amazing other 4 players, he has had major choke and nerves issues but is a top player in the world and a world champion.
The problem with this issue is that it is very uncommon to both have the mentality that you are the best and for that to be legitimate appraisal.
Great topic and discussion though(needed to be included as I know you have nerve and confidence issues thoorin we shall get you a life coach for this :P)
MOMS FUCKING SPEGATTI!!io!i!in!ikn!kn!
MOMS SPAGHETTI
Is this argument of arrogance being an asset only applicable to a sports/e-sports context?
Thorin has such a great mind set. He looks past all the irrelevant shit that people thinks important like oh my god so and so got a penta(doesnt matter). He said this is a person this is how do they play why do they play that way how can we improve it is basicly what i got from this. Why are you not a coach ?
Nukeduck was a much better Fizz then Zed player imo.
Is Sneaky a angry player too :/ ?
can you do one on faker?
lack of determination is why bjerg and reckless wont demand to be the stars
cant really fix it lol, perhaps over time they become professional enough to fit into any team with their skillset but they likely wont be focal points cause they cant handle that responsibility
let bjerg be mid for clg and he'll flourish with dl as the focal point, reckless should do well at alliance though he's only going to be a very solid carry as opposed to a star carry
basically the teams that recruit them would be looking for stats to complete a team instead of build a team around them, they just wont handle it imo
nukeduck and forgiven are determined enough to prove themselves as the best, so they'll seek to go about doing so
so is uzi, brilliant carry not only cause the team funnels gold into him but cause he wants that gold cause he knows he is the one who is best capable to put it to effective use on his team
wow...after watching this i'm actually excited to see how alliance do next split
can you make basketball videos would be epic
One on Faker?
Very interesting stuff, your voice is nice to listen to! Fk the haters, continue your good stuff!
Froggen won a 1v1 vs Faker, so you we're right! :D
he is like zlatan ibrahimovic :D
24:00 i thought potential was bullshit?
You got some gold in your nose, or what's up Thorin? XD
dont know if thats just me, i find the mic/volume/sound? very annoying :(
Knees weak, arms are heavy :^)
Also if you could summarize your anecdotes a little bit better i'd be very much impressed ;P
The best example you can have in sports is Cristiano Ronaldo in football.
This idea of Alpha-Beta males/females is such an oversimplification of human relations. Sort of disappointed that Thoorin had to rely on a bit of it to complete his analogy.
Why do you scratch your nose so much Thoorin?
Doublelift is better than Rekkles tho
good content, but as i see alot of times, you get psyciatrist and psychologists mized up >
Thorin man you should really stop taking cocaine before making vods. It's starting to be too obvious. btw luv what you're doin.
It aint that hard Thorin. Why do you think teams have been successful in the past with single shot callers. All you need to get the best out of less arrogant players is trust within the team in a good shot caller.
All was good until he started speaking about his lover froggen
Salvador Inetti In retrospect we saw Froggen mentally break down and blame his team mates multiple times in S5 Spring.
Yapa
I dont agree on the Rekkles part. Rekkles has a huge ego and has an aura of arrogance
he said he can be the star but doesnt play like it. you should rewatch the video or at least the part abt rekkles.
Wow, I dont agree with him as well but much, much more with you. From what did you get hes however arrogant?
you are making good analogies but you left out the opposite end of the spectrum when talking the nba... you left out the consumate team player in tim duncan.... hes the antithesis of your arguement.
My opinion!
