Engineering works for TRU - Trans-Pennine Route Upgrade are ramping up and as a consequence line capacity has been reduced. TPE have amended their timetables to reduce the number of train services, which has resulted in a reduced need for train sets. Full delivery of loco-hauled sets had never been achieved and with only a small number of the planned fleet on hire, TPE decided to focus on their larger fleets of 802s (I think that's the class ref) and 185s, for which classes operational costs are much lower than for the small number of loco-hauled sets. The class 68 locos are extremely noisy whilst idling, which excess noise has been the cause of multiple complaints from neighbouring residences in Scarborough and passengers at Manchester Victoria where the loco tended to be at the east end of the train, which positioned the locol close to the footbridge below the arena, which location greatly amplified the already excessive noise. For these reasons, TPE reached agreement with the owners to end the hire and return the loco-hauled sets to their owner for potential hire by other TOCs.
Thank you Anthony for this comment that I already know all about, the good part about your account of the TPE situation with these class 68 and MK 5 coach is hopefully members of the public who have taken a interest in this video will read what you have said. Just one bit you didn't say is I believe TPE have to pay for the lease of these trains to May 2024.
Most of that is utterly incorrect. In the last timetable there was only one class 68 booked into Victoria with the rest using Piccadilly. They have been withdrawn because the DfT don't want to spend money on the North. Nothing changes. They will almost certainly be transferred to Chiltern where passengers are deemed important because it is in the South and serves a London Termini. I say this as someone who lives in the South.
The lease with TPE runs until the end of this month I believe which is why they have only slowly moved to long term storage and are only this week starting to be debranded. It’s a shame for TPE but hopefully these will run again in the U.K. and not be exported abroad.

If common sense had prevailed at the final Channel Tunnel meeting in Manchester in early 1991, HS1 and 2 would have been sorted out there and then. Unfortunately, individuals like myself were ridiculed by the likes of "Two Jags" and Directors of Ove Arup (now Arup) who put forward the St Pancras - Stratford "International link" instead of a direct route to the coast with an underground station in the Kings Cross area. Not surprising that Arup "won the day" - a massive foreign building company based in Stratford (as I maintained at the Meeting and was shut down by a baying load of businessmen). Since then, we have a station in Stratford that has never seen an International train (built by Arup), a Shopping Centre (built by Arup), an Olympic Centre (built by Arup); Crossrail (built with Arup's assistance) all based around Stratford and, of course, HS2 also being built with Arup's assistance. Given yesterday's announcement by Chiltern Railway that they are looking to procure existing stock rather than new build, potential opportunities here. As well as the class 175s
When I was at junior school which would have been 1956/57 I always wanted to be a train driver when I left school. But it had to be steam trains. Our local line started to use diesel trains but I didn't want to be a glorified bus driver. So I didn't pursue that .some years later I found out that on the intercity lines those huge diesel electric trains were used I realized my mistake
Was the Class 37 the best diesel ever made in this country? Oh, and didn't English Electric also produce the Lightening supersonic jet. It's a pity Governments were never interested in supporting British Industry.
Disappointed that I never got to see these sets running through to Middlesbrough as they were supposed to.......Surprised DRS haven't taken the 68 back though, would have thought that it was more efficient than some of their 66s?
Shame the Furness line could have done with some capacity like this however the door arrangement isn’t suitable for the airport service the amount of cramped 3 carriage 195s that happen on the line is rediculous mk5 with 88 if door layout was not an issue would be perfect
I’m sure I’m missing something obvious, but these trains were operational just a few days ago, so why do they need to be hauled by a 33. Could they not make their way to storage under their own steam?
All I will say TorbayTech is they were took out of service on December 9th and the loco which was hauling them was a class 37. Thank you for watching my video.
This might be a bit ignorant but why not just drive the train itself to storage instead of having it hauled by another locomotive? Anybody know? Nice vid btw :)
i think once its out of service its not allowed to do the extra mileage into the storage area/scrapyard by itself. that seems to be the case everywhere.
This is simply a failure in management planning - not one of principle and - thank goodness - such currently unwanted trains can be stored and not left to rot until they are needed.
They would have done better to have refurbished class 37 locos and ordered a batch of new ones if needed, plus a fleet of new Mark 6 (= Mark 1 with central door locking, retention toilets and to current crash resistance standards)

Yes it is sad to see them go. I like the livery & the Locomotive names that were given, shame that the train service was so unreliable with the cancellations.
I wonder if they eventually end up being used on a route in and out of London. The money will be found to repair the problems with the Bogies which caused their withdrawal?. Of course it will.
LNER and TPE have petitioned the DfT to abandon their ECML Train Services north of Newcastle, and for all cross-border and Northumberland services to be transferred to ScotRail, freeing up stock for their more profitable southern operations. Avanti West Coast have done likewise for their WCML Services north of Preston due to low ridership. These former 68+Mk.5 TPE sets could be easily refurbished into ScotRail colours and be re-purposed for cross-border services on both the ECML and WCML. Being diesel powered, would be able to work through to Aberdeen and Inverness without changing power units whilst maintaining 110mph running.
I have read something on them lines you mentioned, but I think then you are spiting the country up when it comes to rail train. So profit come first again which is wrong. I remember the days when you could get a train from the West Midlands to Inverness six days a week, we should be going back to them days.
There is a number of reasons, in early December they withdrawn all there class 68 and MK 5 coaches because they were having manufacturing problems with the coaches which were built in Spain, plus they didn't have enough drivers trained to operate these trains. Most days only 2 or 3 sets would run out of the 13 sets. So the coaches are being stored till I believe May time as TPE have to pay for the leasing contract to then. Hopefully then theses five year old coaches can get the faults sorted and another railway company can use them. Thank you for watching my video.
You just have to look at the people running the show. Instead of hiring the best people all they do is make sure all the diversity targets are met. And fill there pockets with cash, watching this country atm brings a tear to my eyes

Are all the sets going to long marston?
Don’t know.
I don't understand why the 68s aren't going back to DRS for alternative use.
They are, loads have already gone back I have seen them on RHTTs at Carlisle, Nuclear flasks to Sellafield and Engineering trains already!
They will go back in time I'm told.
Utter madness!! Bet the folks at Long Marston are not complaining at collecting rent though. They're the only people who are happy.
Oh yes you are right Robert, I never gave that a thought.
Cheers for your comment, Mike.
i never actually saw these trains. but seeing them go is just such a disgrace. couldn't they have been transferred to another operator?
I believe after May that might happen mate, thank you for your interest in my video.
I can understand the train being put into storage, but the loco as well?! Surely it should be earning its keep elsewhere?
I agree with you, must have to many locos doing nothing on depots Johno.
@@cpasimportantDRS have already been suing them without repainting them, also pretty sure the TPE livery is a vinyl so they can just rip it off and have blue underneath
According to what I've seen on another videos, defects were found in the coaches. Cracked frames I believe.
Yes that is right, but I believe nothing has been done about it yet as TPE didn't have enough drivers trained to drive these trains.
I thought I read some where the other day that some of these were going to TFW for the Holyhead to Cardiff service and some going to ScotRail?.
Don't know about that Ray.
Storage doesn't mean scrapping, these sets will have another future with another operator soon.
Yes I believe that will happen, but we will have to wait till after May to see if it does go ahead Christopher.
You lease a car and it's not fit for purpose, you don't extend the lease you send it back and use your money to lease something else. The leasing company are the ones then stuck with the dud car. Same situation here, except the lease still has about 3 months or so to go so they've decided to just store them until then rather than incur running costs.
If they had bought them, they would be stuck with them.
Also, it's not a new thing - Anyone remember the EPS stock for the Eurotunnel sleeper services which were were scrapped before even finished building all the coaches. All sold on to Canada at a loss.
I remember them EPS sleeper coaches for the channel Tunnel.
Thanks for your interest in my video.
This new train served longer than the Dutch "Fyra" high-speed train did. There's always a bright side 😊
Oh ok, cheers.
Lmao you guys don't want to forget Fyra, but most importanty you never want admit that was NS fault 😂
"Old Fyra" is going well in Italy 😂

Hitachi use them for scrap because Ansaldo Breda closed the production line and the only way to recover pieces is to sacrifice a train for it (in this case, 3 of the originary 19 V250 are used for scrap, 4803 4805 4882)

why is it being towed ? couldn't it just run under its own power ?
Well I don't have a true full answer to your question, but if it was possible for the 68 to have taken the train to Long Marston it would have happened.
Can't remember a class 68 going to Long Marston so maybe that it the reason.
Given yesterday's announcement by Chiltern Railway that they are looking to procure existing stock rather than new build, potential opportunities here. As well as the class 175s
Yes I heard about Chiltern just before Christmas, lets hope it takes place.
@@antman09ful1 yes it's a good commercial investment
There is far too much of this
Fairly new stock being wasted for no good reason
I agree Keith.
I hope these end up on Chiltern. I think Chiltern will find a way to make more reliable and use more sets at any given time.
Me too, after May.
Thank you for sharing your thoughts when you was young George, and for watching my video.
What's happening with these trains?
Being stored until May, then we are hope another TOC will have the trains.
@@antman09ful1 hopefully they do go to another company they are still pretty new
I have heard that these Train Sets will find themselves North of the Border, eventually replacing aging ScotRail rolling stock.
Its possible, but nothing will happen to after May.
Its only temp storage as the mk5s are getting cracks repaired and they should find another operator
My favourite class 52 "western lady" was built at Crewe
Very true that Michael, thanks for your interest.
these are the nova sets on the liverpool lime street too scarborough route
Well they used to work that route at one time.
Anyone know what the specific issue is with those new trains? Either way it's embarrassing if they're already being phased out
You will find the answer to your question in all the comment that have been done Thomas.
Main reasons Faults and Drivers.
Sad to see Mike only be 66s left soon at this rate with the DB 60s being shelved
Well its looking that way which is a bit boring I think.
Thanks for your comment, regards Mike.
Not sure what you mean - GBRf, DRS, Colas operate lots of locomotive types.
@bfapple
Majority of workings through Burton-on-Trent are 66s I'm lucky we have Derby RTC and Nemisis Depot so I was over reacting
It is reported that the Class 68's have noise issues and the Nova 3 carriages have structural issues
You could say that, but I don't think there is anything wrong with the sound a class 68 makes.
It is absurd ! With the continuing problems with HSTs on Scotrail, perhaps these trains should go north !
That is possible but other TOC have been mentioned, but nothing will happen to after May 2024
There aren't any problems with the Scotrail HSTs, the door issues have been ironed out
Was the Class 37 the best diesel ever made in this country? Oh, and didn't English Electric also produce the Lightening supersonic jet. It's a pity Governments were never interested in supporting British Industry.
You are right on all counts sir, cheers for you comment.
Isn't Sunak doing well?
Not sure about him Andrew, but I get what you mean.
so for those of us not in the know , why are these going into storage?
A number of reasons, poor quality built coaches, no staff to drive the trains, they are just two of the reasons.
I’m sure we’ll see them back soon. I’d like to seem them replace the HSTs up in Scotland
They are heading to Chiltern railways I believe, reformed into 6 or 7 car sets.
Considering that they're worse than HSTs in almost every way, you wouldn't if you'd have to use them
Disappointed that I never got to see these sets running through to Middlesbrough as they were supposed to.......Surprised DRS haven't taken the 68 back though, would have thought that it was more efficient than some of their 66s?
They are taking the 68 back because they still own all of them, they have already took back lots
Me too Harry, I was waiting for them to go into full service but we all know now what's gone wrong.
Thank you for watching and your comment, Mike.
We need trains here in Western Australia and this set is going into storage the only problem is we have the narrow gauge …
Oh do you also have problems, thanks for watch from the other side of the world.
Unbelievable.... I trust that this ex TransPennine set TP03 and 68032 can be put to good use again.
Yes I hope that does happen Andrew, but we will have to wait to after May.
Great catch but quite sad to see the 68/MK5A sets go so soon. Good video
I agree with you, lets hope things get sorted after May.
Shame the Furness line could have done with some capacity like this however the door arrangement isn’t suitable for the airport service the amount of cramped 3 carriage 195s that happen on the line is rediculous mk5 with 88 if door layout was not an issue would be perfect
They were great days when you had the class 37 working that line.
How many more of these moves is there supposed to be
I would think 13, number three is taking place now.
@@antman09ful1 number 3 was cancelled
Meanwhile the managers will walk away with fat bonuses despite ewasting so much money. The TPE livery on the 68's was beautiful.
Yes its all about money, not good quality for the passenger.
I’m sure I’m missing something obvious, but these trains were operational just a few days ago, so why do they need to be hauled by a 33. Could they not make their way to storage under their own steam?
Under their own steam- if only
@@leoroverman4541good point well made, but the question stands - why could they not travel under their own power?
Not under their own power because probably no trained crew available to drive them over the route.
@@InverhavonRailways that makes sense, thanks!
All I will say TorbayTech is they were took out of service on December 9th and the loco which was hauling them was a class 37.
Thank you for watching my video.
What will happen to the coaches
We will have to wait and see, by May time something will be sorted I'm sure.
The sound of that EE V12 is orgasmic...
So why is this more modern train going into storage then?
Faults on some of the coaches but mainly not enough drivers have been trained.
There is more info from other people in the comments.
This might be a bit ignorant but why not just drive the train itself to storage instead of having it hauled by another locomotive? Anybody know? Nice vid btw :)
Don’t think a class 68 has been to Long Marston before.
i think once its out of service its not allowed to do the extra mileage into the storage area/scrapyard by itself. that seems to be the case everywhere.
This is simply a failure in management planning - not one of principle and - thank goodness - such currently unwanted trains can be stored and not left to rot until they are needed.
Well said sir.
What else do you expect when profit, maximum profit is the only goal?
Yes I do agree with what you have said Andrew.
It’s a joke ..I have that lovely Europheonix in model railway format ! Can I ask what region is the class 68 if someone could let me know thanks
The class 68 can run in all regions.
No wonder that there's a shortage of trains around the country. Some of those scrapped could have served for longer, if renovated.
Its all crazy I think Stephen.
A 37 outlived a 68, couldn't make it up.👍
How would a 68 out live a 37 never would happen
Can someone please tell why these new locos are going into storage..??
Short of trained drivers and faulty coaches.
@@antman09ful1 God sake that's ridiculous....🤦
quite ironic for the 68 to be named "Destroyer"
Yes it is Jamie.
What a waste! Let's hope another operator will take them on soon!
Great video anyway Mike, enjoyed as always! 👍
Thanks mate for your comment on this poplar video, nothing will change till after May I am told. Mike.
Let's hope NOT !!!
They would have done better to have refurbished class 37 locos and ordered a batch of new ones if needed, plus a fleet of new Mark 6 (= Mark 1 with central door locking, retention toilets and to current crash resistance standards)
Great idea that, but you and me know that would happen in this country.
Why is it taken out of service ? what is the story behind this ?
Main reasons are faulty Spanish coaches, and not enough drivers trained to run a proper service with these trains.
@@antman09ful1 In other words : another example of crappy South European technology... Italian trains are rubbish too... and to top it all off : no qualified drivers....
A sad irony really, old but ultimately quite reliable workhorse takes barely 3 year old stock and 68 to store...what a contrast.
Its all a bit crazy our railways are.
But why was it put into storage?
There was a few reasons which you will read in the comments, but what we what to know is who is going to take on these proper trains.
Where will it be stored?
All the info is in the video pal.
Its a shame not to hear the sound of a 68 roaring anymore and the loss of new stock is sad to see. The irony is ive read TPE are to get new trains to replace the 185s. Crazy.....

Yes it is sad to see them go. I like the livery & the Locomotive names that were given, shame that the train service was so unreliable with the cancellations.
I agree with you Jonathan.
Crazy to get rid of practically new trains and replace them with older stock, but in our mad railway system, everything goes to the cheapest bidder...
I wonder if they eventually end up being used on a route in and out of London. The money will be found to repair the problems with the Bogies which caused their withdrawal?. Of course it will.
the class 313 is from the 1970s and they retired in 2023 AND THESE NOVA 3 ARE FROM 2019 AND GETTING RETIRED IN 2024
Its all gone mad I think mate. but it likes like you are right.
I'd happily see the 68s on Scotrail Inter7City network to replace the 43s.
I do like the inter7city HSTs, but if they do go these trains would do the job ok, but they need to sort out the faults first.
Well considering the HSTs are far better than these, you wouldn't if you actually had to use them
LNER and TPE have petitioned the DfT to abandon their ECML Train Services north of Newcastle, and for all cross-border and Northumberland services to be transferred to ScotRail, freeing up stock for their more profitable southern operations.
I remember the days when you could get a train from the West Midlands to Inverness six days a week, we should be going back to them days.
why would they retire those brand new trains??
A few reason mate.
Sad they’re off for storage so soon!
Considering 601 is almost 60 if not over 60 years old!
Crazy the railways are at the moment.

1959 loco pulling a 2020 loco …. And which one will still be here in another 5 years….? Hmmn
We don't know yet, but we will in one years time.
its 2014 loco btw
Apologies for my ignorance but why are TPE doing this and what will happen to these trains next ?
There is a number of reasons, in early December they withdrawn all there class 68 and MK 5 coaches because they were having manufacturing problems with the coaches which were built in Spain, plus they didn't have enough drivers trained to operate these trains.
Most days only 2 or 3 sets would run out of the 13 sets.
So the coaches are being stored till I believe May time as TPE have to pay for the leasing contract to then.
Hopefully then theses five year old coaches can get the faults sorted and another railway company can use them.
Thank you for watching my video.
