  • A TV show "Britain's got the builders in" made by BBC Two - showing adventures of cooperating with builders - aired in March 2015. The filmed project features two of our Large Bio Containers - a DIY Ribbon Fire burners running on bio ethanol fuel - as an alternative to a gas fire that proved to be too expensive and too complicated. The clients, Shan Shan and Jacob are pleased with the final result.

I had to add another comment after reading what others wrote about this lady. Why on earth are you calling this woman an awful brat? I don't see a single thing that would make me think negatively about her. She wants a damn fireplace! What's so awful about that? If anything she may be a bit too meek. That builder is feeding her a load of BS and instead of firing his unaccommodating ass she puts up with him.

Everybody is criticizing her but, she's paying for a service and she wants what she wants. They could easily use marble slabs for the surround so thats not a big deal. It looks good overall but, at ten thousands pounds over budget for that little bit of flame and surround mantel. they'd be better off with a firetable. Imo

What type of material would have been above this fire? Would it be fireproof plasterboard?

The builder is talking a fair amount of shit. All she needed to do was remove the plaster from the chimney breast find the lintel for her stack and there you are, your stack ready to reopen.

Just knock on the neighbours doors and ask to cover their fireplace to prevent a mess from works above. Job done. Definitely a crap builder.

Bio ethanol fireplace looking fires like the old coal fires are the way to go I have one it gives of enough heat and looks like the real deal and their only 3 or 4 hundred pound and eco friendly no fumes. If you pay ten grand your obviously well over paid or mental you heard the price I paid.

That builder is lazy. Get another builder and get your fireplace.

Bullshit, everything he said was 100% correct, she doesn't own downstairs, if they went in through that stack it'd fuck up the property below.
You cant do that shit without the other property owners say so.

@@HereticDuo they have the flue a decent builder would make it work. The whole bit about a brick falling to the people below is nonsense. If he can't open it without dropping a brick he's a shitty contractor. The guy is just lazy.

She should be disappointed. The builders talking crap. We had an open fireplace in South East London and loved using it. We burned smokeless fuel and logs throughout the winter months for years. Very homely and nice.

Were you in a flat ? or apartment? Freehold or leasehold? The builder comes across as dismissive but what he said was true. He doesn't know - and wasn't prepared to gamble - whether the flue for that particular fireplace is still present elsewhere on the floors above. And yes he could've caused massive issues on floors below with soot or debris falling. It could leak into another apartment. Perhaps it's been taken away on the floor above or turned into wardrobes before stoves became trendy again. Of course he COULD have said she could have whatever she wants but would she want to pay for it just on the off chance it is ok? He was dead right to be cautious. It's another case of champagne tastes, beer money. "But my friend has one and says it great" I hear it every week

Typical client, clueless and no good at understanding detail.
