Thank you Mark. I would be interested to learn how to "get the reach of a 600mm lens and the depth of field equivalent to the F4 aperture of that lens" as mentioned at 18:13. I think you may have omitted to explain which alternative lens we need to achieve that?
A 400mm f/2.8 behaves like a 600mm f/4 in APS-C mode (f/4 in terms of depth of field but not exposure). A 100-400 GM behaves like a 150-600 lens in APS-C mode with depth of field equivalent to f/7 to f/9. magnify the focal length and aperture by a crop factor of 1.5.
@@AlphaCreativeSkills Thank you Mark. I can see that would allow a more compact APS-C setup (using 400mm f2.8) with the equivalent angle of view and depth of field of full frame 600mm f4. The 400mm F2.8 is smaller, lighter and cheaper. :)
Incredible camera! I bought it around Christmas time for $1999 with a free Godox speedlight. Coming from the a6000, it's a huge upgrade and it'll be with me for the next 5 years at least. The A1 is overkill for most of us but I can appreciate the technology and adavnacement that Sony made.

Great work Mark, Sony has hit this one out the park, for someone like myself who's main subject is BIF and often small fast ones I cant wait to give this A1 a proper try out, after using my A9 for a few years now I have no doubt this is going to perform as expected.
Given the kind of work that you do and the passion you have for imaging this camera will really work fr you. I look forward to your videos of working with it
I'm dreaming of this beast every night right after sony announced it. Sick combination of a7riv and a9ii in faaaar other level. I absolutely love it 💎💎💎
No doubt, the most advanced camera in the world now, all what you need in one camera. It's a game changer in one aspect, (MARKETING).., camera makers usually never add all these features in one camera, Sony did it. One thing I liked here in the review, Lenses are the real investment, I have to agree with all you said in this review, Thanks from a Nikon shooter(Z7II).
Always interesting and informative Mark, thank you for sharing you knowledge and skill. The stacked sensor makes all this magic possible, it's truly the most innovative photographic device available. The stacked sensor shutter function has matured to the point where a mechanical shutter is redundant. Leaving out the mechanical shutter is an area for cost reduction that will probably appear in less costly models.
I agree - if you can remove the mechanical shutter from an entry level APS-C camera and the production costs of producing these stacked sensors drops we will see much more affordable ILCs. A price point that the competition will struggle to match.
I love the improved electronic shutter. I shoot a lot of portraits with ES even with the A7R III, and it's amazing that I can go home with a couple of hundred photos AND zero shutter actuation.
Some Qs pls (for your future in-depth review): a) Does it have an AA filter ? b) Does 1/400s m-shutter x-sync work with hot-shoe mounted radio triggers ? (Matt Granger says no, "only works with hot-shoe mounted flashes" but the presentation images show off-camera flash illumination ...) c) If RAW file type is set to "uncompressed" will it not shoot Hi+ 30fps anymore (until one dives into the RAW file type menus to change back to "lossy compressed") or Hi+ just becomes 20fps instead ?
Thanks for these questions: Remember that Matt is human and is the same guy that bagged Sony's AF tracking when it first appeared on the A6400 but had forgotten to turn the Focus Mode to AF-C!
@@AlphaCreativeSkills Thanks Mark. Another question, since the 30FPS only applies to lossy compression, what happens when the file format is set to lossless compression but the drive mode dial is set at H+ (30 FPS)? Will the camera automatically change the file format from lossless to lossy? or will the camera reduce the FPS to "H" (20), even thought the dial is set at H+? Thank you very much.
Did you maybe already compare highISO-Shots between R4 and A1? Bad light, ISO 1600, aggressive crop!? The answer to that would influence my decision buying or not :) Thanks for the video! Always the best ...
Sony chose not to supply pre-production A1 cameras to Influencers, Artisans and Ambassadors prior to the launch so everyone is creating Preview videos and not Reviews. My Review A1 arrives tomorrow. High ISO action is my number one priority for testing.
Great to hear an expert correctly referring to the camera as the Alpha 1 - not the A1. So many self-proclaimed internet photo experts don’t do enough research to learn the heritage and rationale behind the cameras. Looking forward to checking out the new camera! Norm Rosen, Editor, PHOTO News Magazine - Canada 🇨🇦 Photonews😎CA
Hi Mark, thanks for the intro. Awaiting your in-depth review. Definitely Alpha 1 is gonna be the new benchmark for other Manufacturers! The cool thing is that we can use our existing GM & other Sony lenses on these new cameras even though Sony keep on exponentially advancing on next generation technology cameras.
Sony have been adding XD liners focus motors to every new lens released in the last couple of years. Optical performance has also been improving so the A1 is a camera with an entire system of lenses already in place.
@@AlphaCreativeSkills yeah that’s really good! and I expect that Sony continues do so, so that we can have our existing lenses to be useful for the upcoming cameras to come down the line for many more years.
"Shut up and take my kidney!".... Or not. The A1 is an amazing camera but I'm happily keeping my A7RIV, as Mark said I'm looking forward to upgrade my glass rather than an already terrific body.
I have the A7R3 and A9 cameras and skipped their replacements since I felt they didn't really offer enough advantages for my needs. The A1 is a complete different story. This is a camera that does it all in a way no other camera we've seen until now has been capable of. For my liking though, I am disappointed at the old and low res lcd screen as well as the ergonomics, I was hoping Sony would improve them but that is based on my personal preference. I'm not sure I can afford or justify buying such camera.
Hey Mark. I have the a1 on preorder and looking forward to your PAL set up for this new Sony Flagship. I have, use and love your PAL setup on my a7r IV. I am planing for ordering (2) Sony CF express cards and reader. do you think (2) 80gb will be enough or do I need to go with the 160? I do shoot birds in flight and fast running dogs😎🤙 I could also go with (1) 160 and (1) 80.
Hey Mark, would there be any chance when you review the A1 that you could please test the electronic shutter against LED stage lights (for my own personal wants and needs, that is)? I was pretty bummed that I would get banding shooting shows with the electronic shutter with the A9. I was super looking forward to the silent shutter, but had to go back to annoying the audience with the click-click-click of the mechanical shutter because there would be way too much banding going on in the images. Cheers.
My first hands-on with the camera is for 72 hours so I don’t like my chances of obtaining a media pass to shoot a night game in such a short time frame.
Sony Japan kept this one secret even from their regional managers. I have just heard, however, that one is being shipped to me now and I will have it next week.
A few questions if you would be so kind. Can you confirm that the a1 offers Zebra technology for stills? Everyone that I ask says that we will not be able to have the camera make a sound in Electronic Shutter with the SONY a1 (as we can do with the a9 ii). If that is true, it is a real bummer. I tried an R5 and hated that I could not se the camera to make a quiet sound with ES ... Many thanks, much love, artie
Tough question. I have the A7RIV and I crop alot now with the 400 2.8 allowing me to shoot at 500-600'ish. Would I love the longer range of 600 and crop even more? Yup. But I really like the low light capability of 2.8. It's a toss up lol Maybe keep both!
@@AlphaCreativeSkills Most likely I'll sell my a7RIII and a9 (and their battery grips) first and then see how things go. For the wildlife photography I shoot, I find the 600mm a better choice for most things. BUT, the 400mm really is a special tool for low light and for fast motion (a little easier to keep subject in frame). I'll be keeping my a7RIV.
It will be interesting to see how this handles surfers, so far the A9 has not be extremely reliable tracking surfers and often when things happen jumps to some foam texture completely out of the focus zone.
I will be testing flash on my second rounds of test but the camera specs would indicate that you do not need to switch the Setting Effect to off in the the Live View Display settings. I will also be testing the electronic shutter and mechanical shutter with flash in my tests.
Do you think the IBIS in the A1 is limited to 5.5 stops e.g. compared to the R5 with 8 stops because the E-mount is much smaller to the R5? So, is it simply a dimension limit to the E-mount size? Or will Sony be able to improve on IBIS stops and matching or even beat the R5 performance? What is your take on that?
I hand-hold landscapes at 1/5 second at f/11, ISO 100 at the first and last light of day and can hand-hold my 400mm lens at 1/25 second. I don't want to play this numbers game with IBIS as most of my subjects are moving so IBIS is largely irrelevant when you get to 1/30 second for people and animals.
@@AlphaCreativeSkills Thank you very much. I've herd the super 35 4k is over sampling but was told the 4k Full Frame was pixel bending. So thanks a lot Mark this was important to me.
The A100 was my first DSLR, I've upgraded several times but the A100 still works as new. Whenever a friend or relative asks to use a camera I lend them the A100, it has seen a lot of use and abuse but still works perfectly.
I preordered my A1 yesterday already and should be in my hands end of February here in Germany...😀It will be interesting, how often I will use my A9II or A7RIV after I received my A1...By the way, thanks Mark for your great content as always! 👍 🙏
I've been looking forward to your thoughts on what looks to be the best full-frame mirrorless camera so far - I'm not disappointed ;-) I bet you can't wait to get your hands on one soon.
Mark could you please confirm the megapixel vs fps? My reading of the specs is that you get 20 FPS in uncompressed RAW. 30 FPS is only with the electronic shutter and compressed RAW?
All of the fastest frame rates are with the electronic shutter as the mechanical shutter is rated to 10 fps. I will be able to test the 30fps over the next couple of days.
The video is just a firmware thing - there is no actual hardware that allows this camera to shoot movies. The camera would be no cheaper if movies were not an option.
@@AlphaCreativeSkills The future will be like Apps on the App Store - buy the camera for $5k and then In Camera Purchases (annual subscription) to enable video or 30fps or whatever - much cheaper to just make one piece of hardware. Tesla are doing it with their AutoPilot.
Possibly - take look at my A7C review and then work out if you need the additional performance that this camera will deliver. The A7C will shoot 4K movies with Eye AF and has fast AF for running kids. Typically 8 frames per second is ample for action of regular people doing regular things.
do you need to use 12bit raw files when shooting 30fps?? also although the 1dx is competition to the a1, but canon r5, although not as good as the a1, is much cheaper than the a1. im a sony shooter and fan, but we gotta represent the competition correctly. even though we are ahead ;)
Mark, help me out here. I must be missing something here and with other reviewers. This camera does 120 times/sec. for AF/AE calculations. To me that should be the biggest headline. If you do weddings, sports, fashion, street, anything that isn't stagnate you need this camera. If you miss focus at a wedding for the money shot or that moment in sport your done, you can't go back a duplicate it - it's gone. The A9ll calculated 62 times/sec and was considered the most accurate focusing system out there. With 120 times/sec. this camera almost guarantees you'll get the shot. So here's a test - using the Sony 135mm shoot 30 FPS on a moving target (dancer, football, etc.) and count the number of shots in focus and then do the same with any Canon on any lens. If you get the shot and it's not in focus, then you didn't get the shot.
It's not just the frequency of the AF/AE calculations that gives the A9 cameras their class leading tracking performance but the fact that the sensor is not blinded 20 times a second by the shutter. The constant uninterrupted flow of tracking info to the processors and the on-sensor processing of this info gives these cameras an edge that cameras without stacked sensors will never be able to match. The A1 has just moved the bar even higher.
Check out this review - he doe an excellent job going into the detail of what each feature means. First review I have seen that picks things like af/ae at f22 - that is what caught my attention.
Do you think the A9 series is dead now with the release of the A1? I dont see it replacing the R and S series but maybe the A9 does not continue on after this
Thanks Mark for other great video just could you tell me what is the smallest aperture for using hi+ drive mode AF tracking in case if anyone wants to use teleconverter on 200-600 lens?
I noticed the Hi+ but there was no information in the available specs (that I could see) that discussed why the A1 had this setting and the A9/A9II does not. I suspect it is to do with the 20 or 30 fps so will have to explore this in greater depth when my review copy arrives tomorrow.
Unfortunately not. The A9II would normally not be due for an upgrade until the latter part of this year and I think Sony will be able to monitor the impact of the A1 on the Pro market before moving ahead with these decisions. A Pro Supports photographer who earns their living off of these cameras probably won't bulk at the A1 price given their lenses are so much more expensive than the bodies.
@@AlphaCreativeSkills Thanks for the reply. While not a professional, I'm using an a9 with 600 f/4 and 200-600 with both extenders (99.9% for birds) and was hoping for an a9III with this release. The price tag of the A1 is tough to swallow (as many are expressing online), and I would hate to buy one only to have an a9III come out that would actually be a more appropriate body for me and my ilk. I sure wish Sony would inform us of their general plan forward.
As always, Sony is at the forefront of innovation. I am very curious about the image quality of this 50 megapixel stack sensor. What I don't like about Sony is that it always leaves something unresolved. Part of the technology that does not rise to the level of the other components (the LCD or the display in this case). I can't wait for your review.
@@AlphaCreativeSkills In the specs it says AF -4ev whereas a9ii is -3ev so I assume af should work better in low light, and my assumption is that is because of less noise under those conditions so af can work. Of course they may just have better AI to enable the af to work rather than less noise from the sensor. Anyway please test the noise at iso6400 compared to a9ii - I will be happy if it is just as good as the a9ii, although I don't believe it will be. That eagle picture in the promo material still looked kind of noisy to me.
I would love this to happen. It is difficult to predict what Sony will do in this regard because past behaviour is not consistent. Everything that was possible to roll back to the A9 was rolled back via firmware when AF Tracking arrived in 2019 but Sony have not rolled back choice of Focus Colour to cameras that could easily support this upgrade.
@@AlphaCreativeSkills I mean I’m still waiting for the ability to change the focus point colour like the A7R4 on my A73. I wouldn’t be holding my breath, surely this can’t be a hardware limitation.
I doubt it, well not the BIF eye af anyway - more processing power would be required and most likely more resolution as well to identify the eyes (more pixels on the eye) - hence the two BIONZ processors.
Excellent review as usual, Mark, and a great camera. However, I don't think your comparing it to Canon 1DX MK3 is well placed, and you probably know you. This camera should be (and It is by pretty much all other reviewers) is compared to Canon R5, based on similar resolution, real life frames per second during continuous Af, autofocus capacity including bird eye af, 8K, etc.
@@AlphaCreativeSkills again, spec wise, R5 and A1 are much closer to each other than 1DXMKIII ever be. Why not compare it to the one with similar specs and, at least based on some preliminary comparison reviews like from Northrups. Some things A1 is better in, Some things R5 is better in, per Northrups. Again I did not want to turn this into a Brand wars. However, you started it yourself but posting a comparison between A1 and those other brand cameras, at 16:58 of your video. So you started it, and I think I have a right to call you on it. You knew well there was an elephant in the room that costs almost $3000 less yet does pretty much the same. Yet, you choose to completely ignore it.
I normally quote speeds in Megabytes per second (the speed of Memory cards) so made a mistake - put this down to the fact that the product launch was 2.00 am in Melbourne 🙁
One thing Sony should do, is allow the user to upload their camera config to a file on their PC and to be able to upload it onto the camera again at a later stage, be it because it was reset or it is a newer camera.
I have a 600mm f4 prime lens and take a lot of bird photographs (for prints and also as reference photos to paint). I am always in two minds to use my A7RIV for the resolution or my A9II for the AF/fps. I have an A7S iii for video. The A1 solves my 'two minds' problem but creates a new one (too much expenditure on business equipment)
An A1 [landscape & wildlife] + A7S iii [video] looks a lot more attractive than an A7S iii + A7RIV & A9II. The A1 could replace a A7RIV + A9II. I am having buyer’s remorse. I didn’t think such a combination camera would come out for a few years.
The A1 50MP uncompressed raw 20fps electronic shutter smashes the A9II 24MP uncompressed raw 12 fps electronic shutter and the A7RIV 60MP uncompressed raw 6fps mechanical shutter.
The A1 price seems reasonable for anyone moving to the Sony ecosystem as it is comparable to the price of an A7RIV + A9II. I just wish the A1 had been released before I purchased my A9 II.
Impressed and disappointed. They go all out, but skimp on memory cards once again (why the h*ll use the slower type A CFxpress?). I really hope 20fps will be completely buffer fill free. Built in grip would also be nice for this money. Now we are talking additional hundreds of dollars on top of the already huge price, to get a battery grip.
I don’t think this camera is for you. The CF Express Type A card slots also takes SDXC-ll cards which will save Alpha owners from having to invest in new cards straight away - Pros shooting movies will probably be hooked up to an external recorder most of the time. Apparently 95% of existing owners do not want to own a vertical grip.
@@AlphaCreativeSkills i guess an A9 iii would be more for me. But if the A1 can shoot 20fps RAW with no buffer limits (or at least better than the A9) it is for me. Maybe Sony will implement a downscaled RAW option going forward. That would solve it for those times you are close to filling the buffer and don't really need 50MP.
That’s pretty much what I did a few months ago. Sold my Canon 5DS-R, a 1DX II, a Panasonic GH5-S, a BlackMagic Production 4K, and a bunch of Canon and Panasonic/MFT glass to purchase an A7SIII, the next version A9 as I hoped it would be (the Alpha 1), and a bunch of SONY glass. It is nice to standardize on a single ecosystem for a change, as the only SONY A7III, which is an awesome camera, was my only SONY before. With the A7III, it was surprising to me and others when I found that I could shoot at high ISO’s without flash at some events and get comparable results in terms of noise and dynamic range to what required external lighting on the other cameras. The A7SIII and the Alpha One take both of those areas roughly 3 stops further in both respects, and I’m sure the new A7 IV will be equally amazing in its own ways.

That's the lesser spotted bear bird. It is rare but can be found near Alaskan rivers.
Good One!!!
Great work Mark, Sony has hit this one out the park, for someone like myself who's main subject is BIF and often small fast ones I cant wait to give this A1 a proper try out, after using my A9 for a few years now I have no doubt this is going to perform as expected.
Great content Mark.
for me this Alpha 1 does everything i need for the next 5-7 years with minimal mechanical wear.
Given the kind of work that you do and the passion you have for imaging this camera will really work fr you. I look forward to your videos of working with it
@@gitithadani thankyou im looking forward to using it also
It’s always a pleasure to watch your videos. Very valuable.
Glad you like them!
I'm dreaming of this beast every night right after sony announced it. Sick combination of a7riv and a9ii in faaaar other level. I absolutely love it 💎💎💎
Can’t wait to see how you set it up for bird photography
No doubt, the most advanced camera in the world now, all what you need in one camera. It's a game changer in one aspect, (MARKETING).., camera makers usually never add all these features in one camera, Sony did it. One thing I liked here in the review, Lenses are the real investment, I have to agree with all you said in this review, Thanks from a Nikon shooter(Z7II).
Another great review. Thanks, Mark, Already ordered this camera.
I got my hands on the A1 and a Sony 600mm 4.0 GM for bird photography. And...oh boy, what a combo. It's mine now 🥰
A question ... does the a1 have in camera multiple exposure capabilities and if so are there blend modes?
Not as far as I am aware - Anything a camera manufacturer can offer is massively dumbed-down version of what is currently available in Photoshop.
Great video Mark, hoping you will be able to put your hands on this beast soon!
tomorrow :-)
Incredible video!
I love the improved electronic shutter. I shoot a lot of portraits with ES even with the A7R III, and it's amazing that I can go home with a couple of hundred photos AND zero shutter actuation.
Hi Mark, do you think the new bird-eye-af from the a1 cames with firmware update to the a9-2?
I hope so
Great bird shot ! !
I have a gooooooooorgeous 7R III, and hope it lasts years and years !!
Thanks Mark
I hope so too!
Some Qs pls (for your future in-depth review):
a) Does it have an AA filter ?
b) Does 1/400s m-shutter x-sync work with hot-shoe mounted radio triggers ? (Matt Granger says no, "only works with hot-shoe mounted flashes" but the presentation images show off-camera flash illumination ...)
c) If RAW file type is set to "uncompressed" will it not shoot Hi+ 30fps anymore (until one dives into the RAW file type menus to change back to "lossy compressed") or Hi+ just becomes 20fps instead ?
Thanks for these questions: Remember that Matt is human and is the same guy that bagged Sony's AF tracking when it first appeared on the A6400 but had forgotten to turn the Focus Mode to AF-C!
Great video, Mark, as always. Do you know if the A1 has the AA filter by an chance?
There is no mention of it in the spec sheets.
Great presentation as always Mark, hopefully i ll be changing my a7riii this year.
Did you maybe already compare highISO-Shots between R4 and A1? Bad light, ISO 1600, aggressive crop!? The answer to that would influence my decision buying or not :)
Thanks for the video! Always the best ...
Sony chose not to supply pre-production A1 cameras to Influencers, Artisans and Ambassadors prior to the launch so everyone is creating Preview videos and not Reviews. My Review A1 arrives tomorrow. High ISO action is my number one priority for testing.
Great video Mark as always!
Glad you enjoyed it
Great to hear an expert correctly referring to the camera as the Alpha 1 - not the A1.
So many self-proclaimed internet photo experts don’t do enough research to learn the heritage and rationale behind the cameras.
Looking forward to checking out the new camera!

Sony set me straight when I slip up 😉
Hi Mark, thanks for the intro.
Looking good Mark, I was wondering what will you say about Sony A1. You look very excited about it. Keep makeing great videos.
I am!
No other video sold me on the A1 as you did
"Shut up and take my kidney!"....
I was using an 80GB CF Express card and didn’t find it large enough when shooting Raw
@@AlphaCreativeSkills Thank You, that helps.
Great presentation!
Glad you liked it!
What you think, Sony did not give any sample units for youtubers?
Sony Japan kept this one secret even from their regional managers. I have just heard, however, that one is being shipped to me now and I will have it next week.
A few questions if you would be so kind. Can you confirm that the a1 offers Zebra technology for stills? Everyone that I ask says that we will not be able to have the camera make a sound in Electronic Shutter with the SONY a1 (as we can do with the a9 ii). If that is true, it is a real bummer. I tried an R5 and hated that I could not se the camera to make a quiet sound with ES ... Many thanks, much love, artie
Nobody has tested the A1 yet - mine arrives on Monday so people that are guessing online are not being that helpful.
I am assuming that A1 will have an AA filter? or not as it's not needed to 50 pixel?
I'll be digging much deeper for my in-depth review that I will start on Monday.
Wow. Bird at 20:47 ??
So you have never seen the rare lesser-spotted bear-bird that frequents the rivers of Alaska?
@@AlphaCreativeSkills no I don't get out much
So ... I have the 400 f/2.8 and the 600 f/4. Which one should I sell to afford the Alpha 1 :-) I shoot a lot of wildlife and no serious sports.
Tough question. I have the A7RIV and I crop alot now with the 400 2.8 allowing me to shoot at 500-600'ish. Would I love the longer range of 600 and crop even more? Yup. But I really like the low light capability of 2.8. It's a toss up lol Maybe keep both!
If the high ISO performance lives up to its promise I would personally sell the 600 GM and keep the f/2.8 capability of the 400.
Mark Galer's Alpha Creative Skills I look forward to the possibility of you testing these lenses with the Alpha 1 for high iso :)
Another fantastic video Mark. Thank you very much! I'm hoping the bird Eye AF shows up as a firmware update for my A9ii.
I hope so too!
I have a Sony A9 and even though the cool Sony A1 is out of my reach it is still a really interesting video, so many thanks from here!
Thanks for watching!
It will be interesting to see how this handles surfers, so far the A9 has not be extremely reliable tracking surfers and often when things happen jumps to some foam texture completely out of the focus zone.
I am getting good results where kite boarders or dogs have surf or spray in front of them.
Thanks.
I want!
Do you happen to know if we still have to set up special setting “live view preview” (or whatever it’s called) when doing flash photography?
I will be testing flash on my second rounds of test but the camera specs would indicate that you do not need to switch the Setting Effect to off in the the Live View Display settings. I will also be testing the electronic shutter and mechanical shutter with flash in my tests.
@@AlphaCreativeSkills fantastic!! Really looking forward to hearing more from you!
Do you think the IBIS in the A1 is limited to 5.5 stops e.g. compared to the R5 with 8 stops because the E-mount is much smaller to the R5? So, is it simply a dimension limit to the E-mount size? Or will Sony be able to
improve on IBIS stops and matching or even beat the R5 performance? What is your take on that?
I hand-hold landscapes at 1/5 second at f/11, ISO 100 at the first and last light of day and can hand-hold my 400mm lens at 1/25 second. I don't want to play this numbers game with IBIS as most of my subjects are moving so IBIS is largely irrelevant when you get to 1/30 second for people and animals.
If there was a one in all camera, this is it. I hate that I just bought the a7r4 lol.

Over sampling
@@AlphaCreativeSkills Thank you very much. I've herd the super 35 4k is over sampling but was told the 4k Full Frame was pixel bending. So thanks a lot Mark this was important to me.
It’s called pixel binning, Shoot in Super 35 for oversampling from 5K to 4K

A100 - my first Alpha camera and it still sits on the shelf behind me as I type :-)

Shouldn't have long to wait as my A1 review sample arrives next week.
Any further improvement on image stabilization function?
Mark could you please confirm the megapixel vs fps? My reading of the specs is that you get 20 FPS in uncompressed RAW. 30 FPS is only with the electronic shutter and compressed RAW?
All of the fastest frame rates are with the electronic shutter as the mechanical shutter is rated to 10 fps. I will be able to test the 30fps over the next couple of days.
@@AlphaCreativeSkills Thanks for your reply Mark. I think you're going to get a lossy compressed RAW at 30 FPS. I'll await your test results. Cheers.
I hope that they come out with a A9III as I don't use video at all in my workflow. A1 is awesome though.
I need a good camera to take photos of my son as he grows up.. is this camera overkill?
Possibly - take look at my A7C review and then work out if you need the additional performance that this camera will deliver. The A7C will shoot 4K movies with Eye AF and has fast AF for running kids. Typically 8 frames per second is ample for action of regular people doing regular things.
@@AlphaCreativeSkills Thanks so much..
do you need to use 12bit raw files when shooting 30fps?? also although the 1dx is competition to the a1, but canon r5, although not as good as the a1, is much cheaper than the a1. im a sony shooter and fan, but we gotta represent the competition correctly. even though we are ahead ;)
Never seen a Canon 5 at a pro sports event
@@AlphaCreativeSkills thats very interesting! i wonder why not
Mark, help me out here.
I dont see it replacing the R and S series but maybe the A9 does not continue on after this
As the specialist cameras drop to half the price of the A1 only time will tell if a market for a 24 megapixel A9 will continue.
I hope you make resources for this camera and e books
That's the plan :-)
Thanks Mark for other great video just could you tell me what is the smallest aperture for using hi+ drive mode AF tracking in case if anyone wants to use teleconverter on 200-600 lens?
I noticed the Hi+ but there was no information in the available specs (that I could see) that discussed why the A1 had this setting and the A9/A9II does not. I suspect it is to do with the 20 or 30 fps so will have to explore this in greater depth when my review copy arrives tomorrow.
this is not for a beginner's gear. It looks Very nice and the name sounds so handsome ! "Alpha one"
My Dream camera 📷. But unfortunately I'll have to make do with the A7III. 😔
A7III is a terrific camera, you can be happy.
Same here..
@@JasonSputnik I'm definitely not saying the A7III is not a fantastic camera. It's been my workhorse. 🙂
Any thoughts on the chances of this camera making the list of Netflix approved cameras?
Mark, are you able to tell us if there will be an a9III?
Mind blowing
I love progress; I love competition. Now let's dream of 2023: Sony A1 - III camera and no covid :)
Thank for that Mark.
You answered my primary question and I'll be putting my A7RIII and A9II up for sale.
I won't need to carry 2 bodies ever again :)
I have just sold my A7RIV but will hang on to the A9II until my in-depth review of the A1 performance at high ISO is complete.
Looking forward your review.
@@AlphaCreativeSkills did I misunderstand something - does the a1 spec indicate one stop better low light performance than the a9ii ?
I was saying the A1 had one stop better dynamic range than the A9II - that' not the same thing as saying better low light AF performance
That eagle picture in the promo material still looked kind of noisy to me.
do you think the bird eye af will be rolled to the A9's in a firmware update????
Great review Mark, I’m looking forwards to getting my hands on one soon
You and me both!
Great video/info, thank you
Glad it was helpful!
So what is the Canon 1DX MKlll if it’s not Canons premium sports action camera?
Yet, you choose to completely ignore it.
; Mark that you know now you can access the menu while the A1 flushes the buffer with a9 was not possible

Great explanation as always Mark, just one correction. It’s 10GBit/sec., not 10GByte/sec.
This is possible on the A7RlV, A9ll, A7SIII and A1
@@AlphaCreativeSkills Bugger, I've only got the A7M3
I keep having to remind myself it is $1 cheaper than a Canon 1DX MKIII :-)
What user problems does it solve?
For what proportion of users?
If you have to ask then this camera is not for you.

@@duncangroenewald Agree. Sounds like operator error to me ...
One for all !!!!!
LOLOL TAKE MY MONEYYYYYY !!!! I'll get one when the A1 ii comes out lol.
I’ll be able to get it after the A1 iv
Man I’d trade all my stuff for this I want this so bad
Ive sold all my gaming stuff to get an a7riv and a 200-600 G, never looked back.
