Hi. Great video. For some reason I cannot get tracking: expand spot bc it states this operation or setting not available as follows: focus mode DMF. I went to focus section and cannot find anything with DMF. Is there a fix for this? Thx
Nice work - don't have the A1 and will maybe upgrade from my A9 to A9 II but will you cover how the A1 low light image quality is for indoor sports compared to A9II? I also have the 7R4 and when going over 1600 the noise starts due to the 61MPs - being the A1 is 50MP I would expect the A1 to be similar to the A7R4 and not as good as the A9II using high ISO in High School gyms without strobes.
Great video, really helped me set up my A1. Quick question, do you need to have the pricey CF Express card to get 30fps or will it work with a high end SD card? Thanks again!
yes, if you want to see your images fast. You can shoot with slower cards but it will drive you crazy as the camera will eventually no longer buffer. the new A cards are super speedy and you can preview (chimp) in between plays easily. Not so with SD;s
Absolutely loved the video tutorial. Great explanation of the important features in sports photography. Only one "concern". You keep referring to the inability to access certain settings because there is no lens attached. Just wondering, why you never at some point attached a lens so we could see those settings. Otherwise, really enjoyed this!
I changed to sensitivity 5 fro soccer games and it was great , thank you!!!!!!!!! for wildlife I using for my eagles fishing otherwise will focus in the water
Excellent video (and videos). Just a quick question/verification. Your reasoning for setting to 5 (in responsiveness) is because your are simply trying to get the subject (ANY subject) in the center of your frame in focus, correct? If you were trying to maintain focus on a specific individual, I would assume you would change to 1 or 2, correct?
No, I only get the subject in focus once when I begin tracking--as long as I hold my thumb on the AF-On button after that, the subject is automatically tracked and I can recompose on the fly and begin shooting whenever I want. I like the 5 setting because it gives me the fastest possible acquire speed when I initially get on the subject. Any other setting below this makes the camera slower to acquire. I have been doing BBF for 36 years and I'm very good at it--it takes some time to figure it out where it becomes like breathing. For those new to BBF and tracking, I'd stay in the 3-4 range and even down to 2, depending on the sport or what you are shooting.
Hi, Patrick! Thank you so much for the helpful and informative video! One thing that I'm confused on -- I'm a former Back Button AF photographer. It was fantastic on my old Nikon DLSRs. Now that we've got this great Sony Tracking, I don't understand what BB-AF is still doing for me? I feel like my thumb is just resting on AF-ON instead of my index finger half-pressing, but it feels no longer necessary. Am I missing something? TY!
man, I never would have dared to ask for 50mp, Cinetone-S, 8K, AND 30 fps... They could charge $8K for the a1 and I'd still buy one and a lot of other people would too.
11:22 I assume you meant to say Off? So we can hear the Uzi, right? 😁 Thanks for the tutorial. It was definitely helpful. 👍🏻 For anyone wondering how long it takes to get one, I ordered mine on February 4th and it arrived April 10th.
Patrick I shoot rodeos but am starting to get into more sports. My question should I get for my next lense the 200-600 or the 100-400? For rodeos I’m using the tamron 70-180 and it’s works great but want a little more reach but want to buy the one that will grow with me I hope you understand what I’m trying to say. Thanks again I always look forward to your videos.
I get this question every day... 200-600G for sure. Better to have the reach and save a few bucks... use this code (PMR) here to get 5% off that lens and anything else you buy from www.bedfords.com/27242916111
Pat when you shoot arena sports and there are multiple photographers how is the strobe priority determined for each photographer, might be a good video?
Two ways. The strobes are mine--they belong to me. I'm the only one that gets to shoot on my strobes. We use a pocket wizard radio remote system. Second, in post season NCAA play, it's decided on the readership of the publications present. SI get's first dibbs, Then the AP, then USA Today, and then its based on circulation after that.
were is the setting "Tracking Autofocus Flexible Spot Medium" to find? im german...my english is not that good ;-) you can explain the menue section please?
Hi Patrick, first of all thank you for the info. If I may just offer a few corrections; - S-Cinetone isn’t a profile that offers more dynamic range, Slog3 is the profile for that. However, what it is known for is having a slighter lower black level. This increases the contrast in the lower luminance areas, it can also roll of the highlight tones a little better. However, like I say, it doesn’t increase the dynamic range. I’m also a little confused that these profiles are being mentioned by yourself for stills, as they are made for video, previously Sony have the creative profiles for stills, has this now been replaced in the A1?? - definitely better quality using the 4:2:2 option ;-) this is to do with chroma sub sampling and is a higher quality than 4:2:0. Although that doesn’t confirm which option is 10bit colour depth. Thanks again, I’m very lucky to be one of the eager photographers that have the A1 on preorder, looking forward to making use of it! :-)
I'm certain you know more about the video side of the a1 than I do, and yes, my mistake on the 4:2:2 being 10 bit color, but as for your comments about Cinetone-S, I love it and it definitely allows easier toning of high ISO and harsh light images. a9 and a9II lacked Picture Profiles completely--so getting an everything camera with PP's is new for those of is that shoot action with these three models. Slog for us mere mortals is too difficult to tone (our word for grading) on the tight deadlines we sports shooters have to work under.
@@PMRTV Yes, totally understand that Patrick, hopefully we’ve cleared up that S-Cinetone gamma curve will not offer more ‘dynamic range’ though? It’s certainly the most talked about gamma curve and colour matrix combo that Sony have, but the dynamic range trophy has always been held by Slog3 and yes, it’s more difficult to grade. S-Cinetone is a more ‘out of the box’ solution and is known for its better highlight roll off and noise control at certain light levels, hence you would find it easier to grade. Hope that makes sense?
@MR.Shutterz I am also wondering about the Picture Profiles and if they apply to stills or just videos? The creative design settings are still present. I have mine set to Std and I have PP11 selected.
I'm going to go with a1 because Sony has had almost two years to learn more new things about image processing in camera... I think it will be better because the sensor is better/newer. IMO
@@PMRTV have you seen a difference at 200-300% from the r4? Some say there is a clear difference especially with lesser lenses like the 200-600mm. Others say only at higher iso. I have the r4 coming from a nikon d850 setup which had good results around 200% crops. I'm looking for better fine detail/crop results with the 200-600mm
AF Area registration , if you do not used you are losing a lot of benefit of the Sony system, I use all the time one button and change the focus from wide to spot for sample in a fly
Thank you for sharing these settings. The A1 is my first Sony camera purchase. While following your recommendations after pulling my camera out of the box, I noticed my camera would not allow me to change some settings like changing AF to Tracking Flexible Spot M. Then I realized I had it in AUTO mode with my 24-105 F4 Sony lens. Was your mode set to MANUAL? I usually shoot in Shutter Speed mode; however, I wonder why AUTO mode doesn’t allow for the AF changes?
If you use AF-C Priority Release for 30fps, you might missed following focus and get blur photos. Jared polin doesn't like Jpeg and he might hate jpeg shooter.
Great video! Clarification on the HEIF 4:2:0 and 4:2:2… that refers to the chroma subsampling within the compression, in which case 4:2:2 has more color data than 4:2:0. A RAW file has no chroma subsampling meaning it’s 444 which is full pixel data. Hope that helps!
Patrick how is possible that a bonafide sports shooter AND Sony artisan like you, gets Sony's new flagship sports camera a week after Gomez and Morticia Northoftruth to review? Bad management decision at Sony HQ!, they give this camera to know nothing youtubers who are not even decent photographers and don't understand the complexity of Sony's focus system at all
Those two should hold a "special" place in the hearts and minds of photojournalists for the blood-soaked hatchet job they did on news photography and news photographers not long after the pandemic took firm hold. While it is always prudent to critically view/consider the information that is put in front of us by the news media, what he did was terrible. That sensible advice wasn't where he stopped. Instead, he basically tore apart multiple views of near-empty grocery shelves and sparsely-traveled highways and pretty much called it fake news because the photographers used a wide angle lens and a low angle in the grocery stores, or waited on an overpass until the right moment when only a few cars were going by. Hundreds, if not 1,000 viewers or more chimed in with comments like "Really? I never knew that" and "Thank you for doing this" and "all the media does is lie, lie, lie." Fuggin' awful video he did and the probable damage he caused.
I'll just let your words speak for you... But I hear that a lot... Hopefully this will change as SONY is no longer selling a6000 cameras to pros like me. First their cameras were pursuing the big two, then they caught up, then they passed them, and now they are way out ahead. As the SONY brand has evolved, the depth of what is possible with their cameras and lenses is only just now being realized by shooters. The stuff is crazy good!
The reviewers you are referring to do these things to get you to click on their video. They purposefully comes up with titles such as "shocking" to get you to click on their videos. Just don't click on it. I refuse to watch their videos. That's how you stop people like this from spreading misinformation. Ignore them!

I don't use PP unless the lighting is really harsh and then I use PP10 which allows for a little more dynamic range.
My thought S Cinetone is works great in less Contrast light than high Contrast light.
How do you set tracking flexible spot medium?
you have to have a lens attached to the body first of all...
Thhanks
Hi, Patrick! Thank you so much for the helpful and informative video! One thing that I'm confused on -- I'm a former Back Button AF photographer. It was fantastic on my old Nikon DLSRs. Now that we've got this great Sony Tracking, I don't understand what BB-AF is still doing for me? I feel like my thumb is just resting on AF-ON instead of my index finger half-pressing, but it feels no longer necessary. Am I missing something? TY!
It appeared that you have phase dexterity off? Is that correct?
Minus the 8k is this what you wanted in the a9ii?
man, I never would have dared to ask for 50mp, Cinetone-S, 8K, AND 30 fps... They could charge $8K for the a1 and I'd still buy one and a lot of other people would too.
Does the tracking sensitivity only apply when you are actual tracking modes in the camera or in all modes ?
all still camera modes--video has its own separate sensitivity modes
@@PMRTV Thanks Patrick
11:22 I assume you meant to say Off?
So we can hear the Uzi, right? 😁
Thanks for the tutorial. It was definitely helpful. 👍🏻
For anyone wondering how long it takes to get one, I ordered mine on February 4th and it arrived April 10th.
Correct!
Do you still use the same settings now on the A1 for shooting sports?
Thanks for the video, PMR, do you have viewfinder on manual at 0 or -1 or -2?
Always 0!!!!!!
@@PMRTV Thanks
were is the setting "Tracking Autofocus Flexible Spot Medium" to find? im german...my english is not that good ;-) you can explain the menue section please?
tracking is not on all cameras. Do you have the a1?
@@PMRTV yes i have th A1
Viewfinder display quality automatically switches to low (std) when you select 120 or 240 viewfinder frame rate.
yep, thanks!!!
in case of attaching A1 on tripod upside-down for ground level shots. how can I turn the view on its monitor?
you cannot, but you could use a small monitor out of the HDMI port.
Hi Patrick, first of all thank you for the info. If I may just offer a few corrections;
- S-Cinetone isn’t a profile that offers more dynamic range, Slog3 is the profile for that.
Patrick, what body produces a better image when cropped in to 300% - A7r4 or A1 ?
I'm going to go with a1 because Sony has had almost two years to learn more new things about image processing in camera... I think it will be better because the sensor is better/newer. IMO
@@PMRTV have you seen a difference at 200-300% from the r4? Some say there is a clear difference especially with lesser lenses like the 200-600mm. Others say only at higher iso. I have the r4 coming from a nikon d850 setup which had good results around 200% crops. I'm looking for better fine detail/crop results with the 200-600mm
Don't you need to change compression to COMPRESSED for 30 FPS?
not when you shoot only JPG
@@PMRTV Ah yes...
AF Area registration , if you do not used you are losing a lot of benefit of the Sony system, I use all the time one button and change the focus from wide to spot for sample in a fly
cool!
Wow I didn’t know you are shooting on jpeg only, thought only Fujifilm could produce good Jpeg images!
no, but Fuji has had the perfect jpg thing down for years... Sony has only gotten there recently, IMO.
Confused about the viewfinder: As soon as i select fps high it seems to go back to standard quality. How can you get high fps + high quality?
when you choose even 120 fps, you lose the highest quality...
Have you picked up the Z8/9? Do you think they are in the same league?
lol, no
Thank you for sharing these settings.
Thank you 🙏🏽
Great video!
That is correct, thanks for the clarification!!!
@@PMRTV my pleasure! Great tips!!
ideal put a lens and avoid explain the errors, thank you for the tips
Thanks, will do!
I do like Gomez and Morticia, but call them the Ma and Pa Kettle of camera reviewers myself.
The reviewers you are referring to do these things to get you to click on their video. They purposefully comes up with titles such as "shocking" to get you to click on their videos. Just don't click on it. I refuse to watch their videos. That's how you stop people like this from spreading misinformation. Ignore them!
4:2:2 has more color space and better quality than 4:2:0
Why not shoot raw?
files are too cumbersome and bulky--they just slow you down.
