- A look at key events in the life of Johnny Lawrence - including his THROWING the infamous All-Valley Championship fight with Daniel LaRusso.
First of all, I loved The Karate Kid, and I loved Cobra Kai. Mr. Miyagi was the perfect father figure and I always loved the fact that they emphasized Okinawa as the birthplace of karate. This is just an alternative view from Johnny's perspective. A lot of people have sympathy for Daniel I felt for him too, being the new kid. I just never believed Johnny would lose to such an obvious kick. Johnny was a legit black belt, no one even scored a point on him in the year before and Daniel was a guy who trained with the janitor in the backyard a couple of months - most of which time he was washing cars, painting, and sanding. I was just out of the Marines when this movie came out and was working as an assistant karate instructor at Jennings Karate Academy in San Clemente and was attending tournaments throughout southern California. It always seemed ridiculous to me that Johnny fell for that kick. It would be like a beginner with two months training beating Johnny Gyro and the whole USA karate team in their prime. Agree? Disagree?

Johnny is a very very good character, the reason why he was bad is because he was bullied at home and manipulated by his sensei. Now he teaches the same way but he teaches to respect and not underestimate an opponent but fight hard at the same time and show no mercy. He seems like a calm and collected character who learned from the past

The teaser for season 2 actually shows him confronting Hawk and Miguel to get them to stop fighting dirty. He then gets the *entire dojo* to start over from white belt.

I’m 54 this was my favorite movie, I’ve been a cop 35 years, and retire in 2 when my last 2 kids finish law school. Im merely a senior Corporal, because I couldn’t ever go with the good old boys. If cost me my career, but my oldest already graduated from law school and finished w/a PhD & my last 2 followed his pace. I always tried to teach them that it is never about money but should be about honor. My older brother brother became a successful businessman multimillionaire but his kids didn’t finish college & don’t speak to him now. He’s filthy rich has a wife 25 years younger, and gravely ill, I hear because we haven’t talked in over 20 years. It’s like he chose the money route & didn’t want to leave a legacy of future goodwill. I always loved this movie, and all the actors stayed on my mind. I remember a couple of times after I became a cop, i had a bbq at my house & my buddies always asked why I have that movie on rewind all the time? My oldest cop buddies answered because he really thinks he’s the karate kid. I know that’s how I picked my wife, I married her because she believed in the karate kid subliminal message of HONOR FIRST.

When his student started doing bad things in the ring, Johnny is like "What have I done?"
Hawk actually had a good chance of making it to the finals if he didn't pull that cr@p that got his DQed. He shot himself in the foot. If I was him, I would have just used my anger from Robby's smart a$$ remark about his hair to beat him in the match, rather than kick him from behind.
Are you kidding? Hawk has got great potential. He fights with a chip on his shoulder. He may have more potential than Miguel. Remember Hawk had came a very long way from his old form aka LIP. He was harassed as much as Miguel, but was weaker to begin with.
So he joins Cobra Kai, then gets picked on by Johnny and then Johnny tells him "... you gotta flip the script." He goes home crying, then comes back with a Mohawk and new clothes and BAM! All that matters is that YOU BECOME BADASS!!

You couldn't beat getting on your bike, putting the headphones on, having a neighborhood where everyone looked out and knew each other, and immersing yourself in the music. Music of that era can't be beat. I relate to Johnny in that I always turned to music to take away my woes. I'm digging his character.
Also, remember how after he THREW the match he went right up to Danny, handed him the trophy and said "You deserve this Danny." He was trying to bury the hatchet but it looks like Danny just cold shouldered him.
Both Daniel and Johnny have good intentions. Johnny just showed up at the wrong place at the wrong time since Daniel was persuaded by his new neighbor to talk to Ali, so that's why their versions of what happened are different. All Daniel saw was Johnny being a jerk to Ali. He didn't know what was beyond the surface. That's what makes Daniel the hero, Johnny the anti-hero, and John Kreese the true villain.

@@don8764 in S2E9 pulpo johnny mentions he put a pie on daniels chair. Bike attack happened the day daniels mom gat a promotion. That means some time passed before the bike attack and that happened probably a few days before halloween.
Richard Klosterman I couldn’t agree more. It’s like people are still ignoring the two or three moments that Johnny and his cronies, while under the influence of Kreese kept tormenting Daniel during his stay (the football tryouts, his bicycle fall off a cliff, and the confrontation involving the All Valley Application, which I think was a deleted scene). I can clearly understand why Daniel is trying to combat Cobra Kai in the present, as he’d rather not see a new generation of bullies. But yet I wish in season 3 he would see the positives in what Johnny’s trying to do with his students as opposed to those who have now sided with Kreese.

Bullies always seem to be victims of bullying..Johnny is really shining in this series & showing his compassionate/logical side❤️
Who else is grateful that they grew up in the 80s without social media? Most people I know who also were teens then are glad they didn't have social media - whether books, films, rollerskating. or martial arts, we made our own entertainment and bullies didn't have the internet to add to their arsenal! As Johnny says in one episode at least bullies couldn't be 'anonymous'!
Back when goodbye meant goodbye, not "stalk you on facebook 30 years from now." I bet any bully from that era is terrified one of his targets will ambush him.
The one thing that sets this show aside from a majority of others is the key idea that people are not 100% good or evil. Daniel LaRusso can be a bit of a snot, Johnny Lawrence can be a good person at times. Even Miguel and Robbie both show their strengths and weaknesses, and Sam herself walks the line between being a girlfriend, daughter, friend (not having initially supported Aisha against her other two friends). I dig the shades of grey.

Johnny Lawrence: the real hero of the karate kid series
First of all its a saga, second of all there are no heroes in the saga, everyone did something bad, johnny was the bully in the 1st movie, daniel exposed chozen in the 2nd movie, in the 3rd movie miyagi didnt even try to help when daniel needed a trainer, in the 4th movie julie was being rude to miyagi in the opening. In Cobra Kai every character makes a few mistakes so there are no heroes.

That was probably the real reason that Kreese got pissed off at Johnny after the tournament, Kreese most likely saw that Johnny threw the fight on purpose because he knew that Johnny didn't really want to sweep his leg. He would have rather lost honorably then to win dirty

Awesome series...just binge watched season 2...can't wait for season 3!
This would make sense, if it hadn't been for that fact there is the scene(s), where it was Johnny who told his friend to sweep, or knock over Daniel during soccer practice, that was a moment were Daniel did nothing, but they did it anyway. Then there was moment where, Daniel was riding his bike, and they did push him off of the hill, and that wasn't a time when Daniel did anything. Like it is great hearing it from Johnny, and watching Cobra Kai, it was amazing seeing things through his eyes. Now during that series, Daniel and Johnny were a bit equal in action and reaction, though Daniel's daughter Sam was a part of a group that jump started everything without trying, or knowing it. It was nice seeing where Johnny was coming from, and why he felt the need to do certain things; but when you look back at things, there's more that meet to the surface, and there a lot of things that falls into play that didn't need to happen by Cobra Kai in the past towards Daniel,with Johnny help. The restroom scene is one of the ones that Daniel did that was without Johnny, but before that he kept running away from Johnny, and remember Ali had told Daniel that he had to stop running. That water scene, was Daniel listening to Ali, and trying to get back at Johnny, for a lot of the miss-up(s).
I don’t think anyone is trying to say that Johnny was a saint. He was a kid with a rough past and probably felt the need to act out in order to maintain his alpha status. In his mind his actions were justified by the fact that Daniel was after Ali. But when it came to karate and his reputation as a champion, he couldn’t deal with the idea of his Sensei asking telling him to cheat. In that moment he saw that everything he had believed in was fake.
That crane kick must've gotten so many guys ass kicked back in the day. Glad I was a Cobra Kai

I think we are taking a 'stunt' for a movie and making it a movie plot. The whole part about him throwing the fight by throwing his face first really translates to an actor trying to sell the kick to the face. Just my two cents.

The guy in "City Slickers" had it right----your whole life is a do-over. I'm currently a 55 year old Junior at UCLA. Its never too late to start doing positive things. Love the Johnny character, can't wait for season two of Cobra Kai.
I love how much depth they have given these characters. Both have issues, both have a past that is not really resolved, they are both nuanced and have flaws and strengths.
I am glad they made Johnny so relatable and didn't feel the urge to rehash the 1st movie with the exact same feud and roles (Daniel protagonist / Johnny Antagonist). I like that Daniel as a grown man still has insecurities and is still hot headed, but they didn't just make him a straight up villain.
The writing and acting in this show is excellent.
Breaking bad is the greatest series and there will be nothing else like it.

This Unforgettable a memorable sequel to The Karate Kid should have been in the movie theaters I remember going to all three premiers back in the 80s
I never knew Johnny was the unpopular kid growing up. Seeing him in The Karate Kid, I just assumed he was always cool and came from money. Very cool to see how it all started and why he joined!

I don't blame Johnny for chasing after Daniel after he soaks Johnny's weed. It cost a minimum of $12 for a gram in 2019 dollars. Plus Johnny just trying to get little high so you can forget about his problems like the fact his relationship is over and he has a jerk stepfather played by the old man from Up.

Has anyone else ever noticed in the original beach scene when Ally is hitting Johnny, Dutch says "Hit her Johnny". After watching the movie 100 times I caught that for the first time. Haha. I'm surprised that wan't edited out. lol
I predict two potential points of conflict between Johnny and Miguel: Miguel feels Sensei Johnny lied via ommission by not disclosing the fact that Robbie was his son and/or Johnny and Miguel's mother, Carmen, begin acting on possible romantic feelings for each other.
