I played a duo with him once at the Frankfurt Muisik Messe! He was a great person and guitarist!

He was every modern guitarist's Daddy. Thank you Herb. Posthumously.

It's a George Van Eps string damper to avoid feedback from vibrating strings.

Yes a bit of distortion but still some great playing from Herb. Noticed he has a string
damper on the 1st fret of his ES-175 to stop feedback from it.

A jazz guitarist is nothing without a little distortion. They’re the forefathers to heavy metal. Didn’t think those headbangers came up with those Satanic riffs on there own, did you!

Im not sure, ive seen this on his guitar in a few vids - the only time I have seen anything very similar is a contraption invented by shredder Michael Angelo Batio which, when pressed down, mutes the strings so that one doesnt need to worry about accidentally hitting open strings.

Unfortunately Gibson stopped making the ES175. But I got mine before they did. I will be passing it on to my son one day.

what is the and why is the fake capo bridge being used? could it be for intonation problem-reolved?

When you grow old your hands grow a bit clumsy, only natural.
Open notes by mistake would sound dreadful... so yes, its for making the playing more clear.

It’s a string damper. Designed by George Van Epps. Basically, It stops “Open Strings” feeding back etc. I use the “ Pad of my Thumb” sometimes.
Of course, this precludes the use of “Optimum Technique”, But I don’t have that !, who does !.
Just listen and enjoy. We won’t hear his like again. Everyone is a “ Ferrari” player these days ! !. Best Wishes x.
