The Widows Last Mite Is Not About Giving

  • The widows last mite is often used as an illustration of sacrificial giving and many greedy pastors use the story to get people to give them their money even if its painful to give. They say that this widow gave everything so you can also give me much much more. Preachers like Robert Morris, Michael Todd, Crefo Dollar, Steven Furtick and many other false teachers deceive simple people into giving them more and more money. In their greed they will exploit you the bible says. Jesus was actually condemning the Pharisees and the religious leaders for devouring widows houses and he was using this poor widow as an example of their sin and their greed. Christians should not be taking money from people like this, they should be giving money to them. Even in the Old Testament law provision was made for the widow in the tithe. That's what the tithe was for.

That’s exactly what I keep thinking every time I hear somebody say this. shouldn’t we as the church be helping them isn’t that our job instead of taking their money especially a church leader! Is that not what we’re supposed to be taking up money for? To help those in christ body that need it?

The OT has examples where the prophet Elijah blessing a widow who had only enough oil- flour to feed her son and die. The Lord blessed her through the famine and later Elijah raised her son from the dead. Stark contrast

I too was taken in by these false messages at a time when I was working, making a very meager amount, struggling to pay the rent. Looking back, it filled me with such fear and guilt. I used to admonish myself,
‘if I just had more faith and gave more, life would not be so hard’. I realize now that my difficult circumstances were not due to my own lack of giving. My ignorance of Scripture made me a vulnerable target for this type of expositing. That was many years ago, and thankfully the Lord has graciously and patiently guided me through the Bible, increasing my hunger and thirst for His Word.
I recently heard that message by John MacArthur, and was amazed that I’d never heard it preached in that way in 40 years, and yet as I study God’s Word in it’s entirety it is clear that you are right in your exegesis.
God bless you Caleb for once again speaking truth from God’s Word. I greatly appreciate your teachings.

I knew a lady in a church I used to attend who was 80 and still working because she had to. She finally retired but had trouble making ends meet. Do I pay rent and pay bills or do I tithe she asked. She was conflicted. I told her to pay her bills because God wouldn't want her to lose her home. She was a faithful woman of God. It was a church that emphasized tithing and she felt really guilty. This upset me greatly. She was a widow who was struggling.

Why settle for a double when I can have a triple! Why settle for a triple when ... :) What's the rule, one double every 3 years? 3 doubles per lifetime? Maximum multiplication of 4?

I used to be Catholic. Once a month, my former church would take up a "widow's mite" collection. The children did it at the end of mass. They would run up, and grab a tin pail, then walk amongst the pews, as the congregation dropped coins into the pails. The idea was the hear the coins clanging as they dropped into the bucket. Most of the children seemed to enjoy it, and the congregants happily dropped their spare change it in. It really was sick manipulation of the cutest of the children now that I reflect back on it.

    • @rafal2959
      @rafal2959 Рік тому

The Catholic church has no requirement to tithe. People are expected to provide the material needs of the diocese to their ability if they are able. Unlike mega churches and protestant pastors, priests are obliged to live a life of simplicity (e.g. without trappings of wealth). The pope rents a plane when he travels, while many mega-church pastors own their own jets. The Catholic church also tends to recommend to split one's giving between the church and other charitable giving. I'm sorry for you that you found such an innocent practice at your church to be a sick manipulation.
The only mite boxes or mite collections I have ever seen as a Catholic are passed around during lent and the money is to go to the poor.

It’s this video that is teaching you incorrectly. THE LAW OF TITHING COMES FROM GOD. FALSE CHURCHES AND FALSE PREACHERS TODAY HAVE CORRUPTED THIS LAW.
God introduced the Law of Tithing from the beginning with Adam and Eve. Cain killed Abel because God was more pleased with Abel’s offerings. It matters to God that you give your all to him.
Do you notice that this channel never mentioned the true word of God as to the greater teachings of Tithing involving Abraham, Malachi and such. They just pick apart scriptures and cut and paste to fit their talking points. We must read and understand correctly ALL scriptures.
Here are some, but not all of those scriptures they left out.
MALACHI 3: 7 Even from the days of your fathers ye are gone away from mine ordinances, and have not kept them. Return unto me, and I will return unto you, saith the Lord of hosts. But ye said, Wherein shall we return?
8 Will a man rob God? Yet ye have robbed me. But ye say, Wherein have we robbed thee? In tithes and offerings.
9 Ye are cursed with a curse: for ye have robbed me, even this whole nation.
10 Bring ye all the tithes into the storehouse, that there may be meat in mine house, and prove me now herewith, saith the Lord of hosts, if I will not open you the windows of heaven, and pour you out a blessing, that there shall not be room enough to receive it.”
Leviticus 27: 30 “And all the tithe of the land, whether of the seed of the land, or of the fruit of the tree, is the Lord’s: it is holy unto the Lord.
31 And if a man will at all redeem ought of his tithes, he shall add thereto the fifth part thereof.
32 And concerning the tithe of the herd, or of the flock, even of whatsoever passeth under the rod, the tenth shall be holy unto the Lord.”
MATTHEW 23: 23 “Woe unto you, scribes and Pharisees, hypocrites! for ye pay tithe of mint and anise and cummin, and have omitted the weightier matters of the law, judgment, mercy, and faith: these ought ye to have done, and not to leave the other undone.”
NEHEMIAH 10: 38 “And the priest the son of Aaron shall be with the Levites, when the Levites take tithes: and the Levites shall bring up the tithe of the tithes unto the house of our God, to the chambers, into the treasure house.”
Do not be deceived by this video on this channel. God do not lie. He will curse those whom rob him of tithes and offerings. However, don’t give it to the false churches. Pray to find the only church Jesus created and give only to that church. They do not pay any of the Bishops a salary. We do not believe you should be paid a salary to preach. It’s not Biblical to pay a pastor to preach. He must work his own job and pay his own tithes and offerings.

Robert morris always teaches to tithe, he filled in at my old church and it was about tithing and how he wouldn’t let his daughter marry a man that didn’t tithe, he even bragged about having them verify that he did tithe. I couldn’t believe that. He abused his power and had the church staff look into it, and told our entire congregation. He was so proud too.
I used to tithe quite a lot as a single mother who hardly got child support. Thankfully I was able to function, but it certainly wasn’t easy. We had to go without quite often. I only had $50 a week for groceries for years when my daughter was young. I read in the Bible where tithing was of the first fruits of the land and the church said that our first fruits is our money, so I went with it. They also had us study the purple book, where it listed the scripture:
“Will man rob God? Yet you are robbing me. But you say, ‘How have we robbed you?’ In your tithes and contributions.”
    ‭‭Malachi‬ ‭3‬:‭8‬ ‭ESV‬‬
“Bring the full tithe into the storehouse, that there may be food in my house. And thereby put me to the test, says the Lord of hosts, if I will not open the windows of heaven for you and pour down for you a blessing until there is no more need.”
    ‭‭Malachi‬ ‭3‬:‭10‬ ‭ESV‬‬
Also Ed Young wears only the finest clothes and shoes, clothes/ shoes from Italy. He referred to his truck all the time like he was humble, but it was not an actual truck, it was a Hummer. He lives in a mansion too, and pretends it’s a normal house. That church always “blessed” rich ppl with trips and such. They would take you to the winners house on camera and the winners were doing very well on their own and could afford the trips themselves. It was sickening. I ended up leaving after volunteering on the stage crew, you got to see everything and we were told under no circumstances talk to Ed unless he approached us. Then learning about everything else, I was turned off. I’m not one to sit down with a pastor, but I think I should be allowed to if I wanted. The love of money sealed the deal for me. I saw they never wanted to help the real needy, just the ppl that helped the church. Then I found another church that was small, and sadly it became a mega church as well, thankfully I left that place and no longer look for these types of churches. I’m so over the concert, prosperity gospel church. It’s still hard to find a Bible believing church. I believe it needs to be like The Way in Jesus day, home churches.

They literally took videos to reward these people at their homes, and their homes were high dollar homes. I took a good girl friend of mine to one of his book signings and was mortified when he acted like a celebrity and talked down to my friend who wasn’t a believer. It was embarrassing, I left shortly thereafter. It left a bad taste in my mouth. I agree with your study, I'll say that in SC 8:14,15 we see Paul is saying that all the wealth should be equally distributed, very similar to Acts 4, but have we followed this as a body ,do ministers dare preach this passage and then get into their town car and drive off to their estate. And what would the rich say as they set on their assigned seats, would you hear amen or this only applies to those under law, amen amen amen, lol.
This all hasn't come to pass because this portion is prophesy after the reserection of the dead everything changes, there won't be any more women preaching, the leaders that make ship wreck the faith are delivered up to Satan so as to learn not to blaspheme. Paul's gospel is written in a microcosm, in that what he is saying to Corinth he's saying to every church where the leaders have made shipwreck that if I come again I will not spare. He's speaking of judgement. The only reason he would come is for judgement that's why he says if I come again. Mind you he has not yet made his third visit.

Very good analysis of the text and its implication to the culture. There's just one issue that comes to the forefront. Given that the NT is a house church, which you encourage, why then do you cite John McArthur, since his church is a mega church? While it doesn't seem to proclaim a gospel of greed, McArthur is still promoting the mega church concept with large buildings, salaried pastors, etc. While I personally like much of what John McArthur says or doctrine, his praxis (or implementation) needs an adjustment, don't you think?

Asking for giving from government assistance is disgusting. That isn't income, that is as the name implies, assistance.
Robert Morris and his megachurch buddies will never give sacrificially. They will give their pocket change from their income and rest on their vast wealth. But those in their congregations have to give sacrificially from their income and have no such wealth to rest on.

Many of them are money making machines, fleecing the people in the name of Jesus! Let's find rather the poor & contribute acc to our capacity with God's knowledge alone. This type of giving, will definitely bring blessings upon us. Jesus alone is doubtlessly the ONLY GATEWAY TO HEAVEN, let me not delay in accepting Him as my Lord n Saviour lest I may forfeit the ultimate heavenly bliss with Him for eternity.

I would agree about everything said except the tithe was animals and grains for the levitical priests since they were not allowed to work outside the temple. The other 11 tribes were expected to take care of the Levites. But saying that people gave Alms into the temple treasury and those monies were used to help widows and orphans. In fact the homeless and widows were given places to live in the outer courts of the temple. That’s how their government took care of the needy.

I wish that I heard this when I was widowed 14 years ago. Our pastor at that time was a money hungry bully, and he coerced me into giving around 50 Thousand dollars of the money my husband left me. I thought my finances would be cursed if I didn't. It seemed every other sermon was about MONEY! The next pastor was the same-- tithe, tithe, tithe! He asked to be wealthy so he "would have more to give"! Turned out he was helping himself to every penny of the money given to "the church" , spending it on himself and neglecting to pay the mortgage payments on the church building. Very disillusioning! Now I know to trust in no man, pastor or not. I trust in Jesus for my salvation, and have learned to read the word for myself.

There are also other biblical views and scripture to show that you should give to the church. The moral of this story is that the rich gave with pride in their hearts, and the box that collected these offerings had a trumpet-shaped receptacle to collect taxes or yearly tithings to the temple to help build it. The problem is that they used these receptacles to show off how much they were giving the more they put in, the louder it was for others to hear. The widow gave and no one in the court (women's court AKA treasury) took care of the widow as scripture says. the same scripture that told these rich and wise men that God would kill them if they denied or did not take care of these widows or take from them. This story is not about money, but IT IS ABOUT GIVING! It's about the giving of our hearts. How much of your livelihood are you giving to the Lord. How much time are you willing to give to God, Money, Relationships, and things that people would normally place above God. David himself said who are we to give what already belongs to God? Yes, we must give tithes to the church, but if it's not from the heart, then you might as well not give at all! Not just money, but time and love. Give your time to God, give what you can to the church to help with the upkeep, not to make the pastor wealthy, Take care of the widows and orphans, and do not try to negotiate what already belongs to God..... your life, your time, and your love. Money belongs to Ceasar, give Ceasar what belongs to him, but Christ did not deny giving to the temple. A collector came to ask for collections and one of his apostles gave for Jesus. Jesus then in frustration looked at him and said, don't you get it?! You gave what belonged to me already! Look at the parable of the fish and coin. So yes, we still must give to the church what we can give, but the moral is to give with a cheerful heart, not that you HAVE to give, but give because you WANT to give. Where is your heart when you give? That will Glorify God!

You make good points but you're wrong to say the passage has nothing to do with giving at all. In the account Jesus doesn't simply say the widow put in everything that she had. That would be enough to make his earlier point, right? Before he says that he makes a comparison between what the rich gave and what the woman gave. Then he explains that the comparison is based on the circumstances of the individuals while also making the point you mentioned.
This comparison helps us to understand God's view toward our giving. It shows us that we should never view our ability to give a lot as any better than someone else's ability to only give a little. And it also helps us to see that we should never view our ability to only give a little as less than someone else's ability to give much because how our giving appears to God is not how it appears to humans.

@@vaughntwo-three3721 No offense but by the way you worded your first response it seems like you're more interested in how you would like to view the passage rather than letting the passage say what it says.
I don't know if we really agree because my point wasn't that it's right or wrong to give even in small amounts but rather that this passage illustrates that God views giving in a way that differs from how many would generally view it.
Also, you mentioned giving to the wrong people. Nowhere in any of the gospels does Jesus say it was bad to put money in the temple treasury. If it was then why did he sit there watching people do it without ever saying a word about it? Why did he not knock over the money receptacles like when he drove the animals out before? The point was never made that it was wrong to give. The point that was made was it was wrong to extort and pressure people to give but absolutely nowhere did Jesus say the people putting in money should not have done that.
I think your argument deviated away both from what the video was about and what my comment was about. My whole point is that the account isn't just about one thing. It's not either/or. There's no need to say you prefer it one way or the other.

True the widows last mite is not about giving, but I also want to believe it is not about what Jesus had said earlier on taking widows houses and all. If you read the text it says Jesus sat there by the treasury watching as people gave. He was looking as people gave and made certain observations. He noticed that people were giving out of their abundance, which means they had more than enough not to feel any pinch out of what they gave. He did not say it was wrong of them or anything. It was an observation! Now he also noticed that this widow came with all she had and gave. With your argument in thought, I wonder why Jesus did not stop her then? My only thought is it was not about the abuse of widows at that time. Jesus noted that what the widow gave was more a sacrifice because it left her with nothing, others gave and still had something left to be able to buy bread there after, she had nothing. To Jesus here contribution was more than the others cause it took a lot more than just giving the money. The emotion that came with it, the believe or faith that came with it. She could have decided to give half of what she had but she gave all. Jesus was just telling his disciples that to him the offering that held more value was of the widow even though it was far less than of the others.
