The Batman not getting nominated for score or cinematography is wild. Mia Goth for Pearl and Ralph Fiennes for The Menu are also so disappointing for me.
For real
Yeah how did The Batman not get nominated?
The score for the Batman was so amazing I can’t comprehend it
Spot on. Wish Maverick got Cinematography and Decision To Leave got Foreign Language Film.
Simple. The Academy doesn’t like superheroes.
RRR was ineligible because the Oscars require each country to submit a single movie for consideration, and India’s committee didn’t realize what they had on their hands so they submitted a different movie
EDIT: Sorry, I should clarify: it wasn’t eligible for International feature. It WAS eligible for Best Picture and unfortunately just didn’t get in
So like the we don’t talk about Bruno controversy from last year
@@antonyblalock2696 Not quite the same, but very similar, yeah. In that case, Disney didn't HAVE to limit it to 1 song, but they chose to only campaign for 1, because they figured it gave them a better chance of getting in. And by the time Bruno blew up it was too late to switch, because the Oscar shortlists had already come out. But yeah it's effectively the same concept, in the sense that they didn't know they had a hit on their hands until it was too late.
Thanks for clarifying that.
Chhello Show
I wonder if India realizes this and now deeply regrets this.
India didn’t submit RRR for international film, instead I think they submitted a movie called Chhello Show. It’s really a bummer though because RRR was fantastic.
Now that the nominations for 2022 films have been made, I can officially say that The Northman was an EXTREMELY underrated film.
Thank you. It didn’t pop up at all. I was disappointed. The Northman is my favorite movie of the year.
My best guess that universal thought a r rated movie like the northman well not do well but they think a pg family movie like the bad guys would do well whitch it did.
@@isaachernandez2592 p. Sure the majority of the films nominated this year are rated R
Or just the fact that universal thought a movie about animals pulling of a heights sounded cooler
It’s just not that widely appealing to most people unfortunately.
Mcavoy in Split
Colette in Hereditary
Lupita in US
Goth in Pearl.
I know im not saying anything new, but the academy ignoring some of the best performances just because they are in horror movies is still really frustrating.
The one I cared about more than anything was The Batman getting a cinematography nomination so of course that wasn't going to happen
Mia Goth really showed that she is an incredible actress. I wish horror would get more recognition.
Yeah they just need to say from now on
“we considered every genre except horror that doesn’t exist in our eyes”
It’s insane how disrespectful they’re to the genre and everyone apart of it every single year
@@zds8291 I’m pretty the people in the academy haven’t even watched Pearl. It’s such a shame honestly
I really wish The Batman and Top Gun Maverick got nominated for best score because Michael Giacchino and Hans Zimmer both killed it.
Nah. Do your homework 😇 TGM can't get nominated for this category because the Score was adapted from the first movie.
Biggest snubs for me are Maverick and Batman for cinematography and score and Ciao Papa for original song
You have to remember that everybody votes for Best Picture, but the other categories are only voted on by the respective branch(Editors vote for Editing etc.) So a lot more people vote for Best Picture, which is why some movies get in there but not into something else.
The Batman is the most beautifully shot in 2022 and that Best Cinematography snub is unacceptable. In TG: Maverick I think the visual effects scene there is the F14 scene from what I know those planes were already decommissioned back in 2006 and the Darkstarr scene is also a vfx scene
Personally I thought babylon was the most beautifully shot of 2022. Or Top Gun 2
Top Gun 2 not getting cinematography is unacceptable
This is one of the greatest Best Picture lineups in recent years because it covers every point in the spectrum from 2-billion dollar blockbusters to tiny indie arthouse darlings, from AVATAR and TOP GUN to WOMEN TALKING and TRIANGLE OF SADNESS. Should result in better viewership and interest because the Oscars are making an effort to be relevant and redemptive by covering all kinds of films of different scales and genres throughout the year.
Snubbing DECISION TO LEAVE and NOPE everywhere, snubbing TOP GUN 2 in Cinematography but giving it Screenplay, snubbing GDT's PINOCCHIO in Score & Song, snubbing AVATAR in Cinematography after the first one won that award, snubbing Paul Dano for Hirsch in FABELMANS... lots of wild inexcusable ones just like snubbing Villeneuve for Directing last year.
But also plenty of very deserved surprises and guarantees with love for EEAAO, RRR, ALL QUIET, THE BATMAN, TAR, BANSHEES, and FABELMANS.
There was no way THE MENU was getting in here because the Oscars aren’t fans of horror/thrillers, but if I had my way, Ralph Fiennes would be winning, the Score would definitely win, and the Screenplay would be nominated for sure.
Give the Oscars credit, they did some decent work representing here.
Honestly, the last thing the Oscars should try to do is be relevant. They should nominate the best films for each category no matter their budget or popularity among a general public that don’t care much for the art of film. This year was just lucky that some of the most popular films of the year are worthy
How did Top Gun not get a cinematography nomination?!!!!!!! The Academy really dropped the ball on this one. Also, Marcel the Shell was in my top 10 of 2022. So glad it got nominated. I also loved Puss in Boots.
I can really recommend you All Quiet on the Western Front. It was quite a banger here in Europe. Also loved Triangle of Sadness because it‘s creative and unique in it‘s structure and comedy
AQOTWF should win best picture in my opinion
The Batman got snubbed for cinematography, and score. One of my favorite looking films of all time. Greg Frasier killed it. I’m rooting for Top Gun, or Banshee’s of Inisherin for best picture. Both wonderful films in their own ways.
I'm not saying Angela Bassett doesn't deserve the nod or Golden Globe win, but I always found it shallow that the award committee, whether the Oscars or The Golden Globes, nominate ONLY the Black Panther movies but not ALSO OTHER superhero movies. Someone in some other comment section theorized it's because of guilt because the movies are the poster child for black power. Or pandering to fans of blockbuster movies. Or pandering to both. I'm Black and I'm betting my account on it that they're pandering to the either the Black crowd or "blockbuster" fans or both because people stopped caring about award shows.
There are other superhero movies that are just as if not more deserving of Best Picture: Superman, Spiderman 2, The Incredibles, The Dark Knight, Logan. And only The Dark Knight and Joker, despite the being the least "superhero" out of any of the "superhero" or "supervillain" movies, got nominated and won for acting roles, ironically for playing the same "character". They are a reminder that awards only matter to me when they're given to the right people.
I wasn’t a big fan of Wakanda Forever, but admittedly, Bassett definitely deserved at least the nomination
@@NinthShinigami she did but so did a lot of other MCU cast and crew members
The Oscars should be the best of the best regardless of the genre but unfortunately it's been the Oscars history that it's not which makes Top Gun: Maverick being nominated for best picture so special and so important.
Can’t believe that I’ve actually heard of and seen a lot of the movies being nominated this time lol. That never happens. Everything Everywhere All At Once and Puss in Boots are the two films that made me the happiest to see get nominated. I do very much wish that The Batman and Wakanda Forever we’re nominated for best score though :(
The academy usually tries to distance itself from comic book movies for some reason. Even the standout ones.
@@ultimateslinger9857 Same with Horror. Like, clearly a lot of superhero and horror films aren’t exactly Oscar material when it comes to the script or the story, but there are a lot of them that have incredible performances or scores, regardless of the rest of the film, yet they never seem to get recognized. Glad Angela Basset was nominated though, that put a huge smile on my face!
Wakanda Forever and The Batman were robbed of that!
@@REaDComicsau Yeah, very disappointing there.
@@REaDComicsau Wakanda Forever is a Sequel, that's why it can't win many Oscars.
I’m so happy top gun is getting so much love!!!
Biggest snub for me was Decision to Leave!
Major snubs: Mia Goth in Pearl, The Menu best writing, The Batman best cinematography and original score, The Northman best cinematography
RRR wasn't India's official submission to the Oscars. That was a moment of anger among us because we've never won an Oscar, and we had this one on a platter with RRR, (cut to scene from Cop Land) "and you blew it!"
Hold my Hand is one of the best songs I've ever heard and absolutely fits Top Gun Maverick.
For me I'm the most dissapointed that Aftersun wasn't nominated for best picture. At least Paul Mescal was nominated for best actor, but then that also makes it even more confusing to me that the film didn't get the nom.
I said it the other day on another channel, but really, I could care less what the Oscars present. They do have some good nominations, but then proceed to snub stuff like animation. That’s my quick two cents on the Oscars, at least nowadays…
Also it wouldn’t surprise me if we see another actor get slapped on stage or something like that 😂
At least this year the animated category was pretty solid, save for Turning Red :/
🤣
I hope Top Gun: Maverick wins Best Picture. I know it's unlikely since they've been avoiding blockbusters in recent years, but it's clearly the most loved movie of the year.
Imagine Cruise winning against all those boring movies. That would be an Earthquake in Hollywood. 🤩
Definitely watch Aftersun when you get the chance - it’s not an exaggeration to say it changed my perspective on life, so emotionally powerful
I can’t fathom how Wakanda Forever didn’t get nominated for best score or how The Batman didn’t get nominated for best cinematography. They deserve it!!
The batman snubbed on best score too. If u can instantly start humming a movie score from a film that came out nearly a year ago then that's how u know its good
@@joebond545 very true.
It's a Sequel...Sequels don't get nominated for best score.
But The Batman should have got it for Cinematography!!!
@@marionbaggins top gun maverick is a sequel and was nominated for best film
@@ramazanibraimi2123 some movies were just starting. Also Black Panther was Nominated for it in 2019 and in a massive franchise.
Biggest snubs: Danielle Deadwyler, Top Gun Maverick’s cinematography
Best surprises: Brian Tyree Henry in Causeway, and Stephanie Hsu!
Also Andrea riseborough in actress
@@gabrielcastaneda9700 definitely a huge surprise! Not on my list because I still need to see it
It was great to see the best of the popcorn movies AND indie films that the film industry has to offer, such as Top Gun: Maverick and Tar, receive multiple nominations including best picture, while other films with outstanding elements also get recognition for their craft - such as the incredible score in Babylon. While it is impossible to be happy with all the nominees in every category, the mix this year looks quite good.
As a film lover from Ireland, this is a huge year for Irish film with The Banshees of Inisherin and The Quiet Girl (An Cailín Ciúin) being recognised in each of their respective categories and Paul Mescal getting nominated for Best Actor in his first feature film after the success of Normal People.
Banshees of Inisherin is one of the best films of the year to me and seeing The Quiet Girl (which is 90% spoken Irish throughout) get a nod for Best International Feature feels historical!
Facts! Look at us on the pedestal 😁🇮🇪
Curious to see how this season turns out.
I completely agree with the original song being so reserved for the credits this year. I understand when there is a variety, such as the usual disney movie song. Ciao Papa or Good Afternoon could've helped even it out, but alas, credit song sweep this year.
The songs that were picked were good at least, it is, like you said, odd.
I hope Martin McDonagh gets some recognition as well as the cast. I feel like I say that every time he releases a film.
I'm hoping he wins screenplay and condon wins supporting actress 🙏
@@sama2086 No way Condon could win since Bassett is on her way, McDonagh maybe
Sean I couldn't agree more about the Oscars being balanced this year. It isn't all prestige cinema or movies that normal people haven't heard of. It kinda feels like a throwback to how the Oscars used to be. I mean...I'm not that old...so not a throwback to my lifetime but you know what I mean...Thanks for sharing all your thoughts. I think you have a great perspective as someone who's a film critic but also just someone who loves movies!!
Mia Goths omission makes my blood boil. The way horror is treated by the academy and the BAFTAS here in the UK is appalling
I like when you were talking about the editing awards. You mentioned that a lot of things were happening at once. Everything? Everywhere? All at Once?
This year includes the most amount of best picture nominees I've ever seen before they were nominated (7/10). Unlike some other years, I was really anticipating most of the nominees this year (the obvious blockbusters but I was really looking forward to Fabelmans, EverythingEverywhere, etc).
Will definitely need to see Tar and All Quiet (I liked the TV movie from the 70s). I'm sure women talking is good but it doesn't look really interesting to me.
Also, just got to the part about the international category, apparently India did not submit RRR
🤯🤯🤯🤯🤯
🤦🏼♀️🤦🏼♀️🤦🏼♀️🤦🏼♀️🤦🏼♀️
All quiet on the western front is superb. The start is very eerie
I love your comment about The Goonies and not seeing it till you were older. I’m 30 and haven’t seen it despite it being a major cult classic. It doesn’t really appeal to me but I feel like curiosity will eventually get me to watch it one day.
Loved the video Sean😉. But i think 2019 was the year that had more balanced choices and a great winner: Parasite; Joker; 1917; The Irishman; Jojo Rabbit; Ford vs Ferrari; Once Upon a Time in Hollywood; Marriage Story and Little Women. Besides Marriage Story and Little Women, all the other 8 movies were really popular with audiences and critics.
Im kinda surprise the oscars gave korea (not to be racist) the best picture win even thought this is the country that hack sony pictures.
Also universal bring in the cast of f&f to present best Visual effects and as universal way to apologize for the whole cats situation.
Ps. Screw you corden
Rooting for everything everywhere all at once, especially for best supporting actress
The fact that The Batman didn't get nominated for best original score or cinematography is beyond me, That movie was iterally the best looking movie of last year and the score I've been listening to it since the movie came out, and also the fact that Ralph Fiennes (The Menu), Daniel Deadwyler (Till), Ethan Hawke (The Black Phone) and ESPECIALLY Mia Goth (Pearl) didn't get any Oscar buzz were the biggest snubs this year, the horror genre I swear get overlooked so easily, still really happy and pleased on what we got at the Oscars though, they worked really hard on everything!👍
I think you’ll love aftersun! The father-daughter thing is definitely something you will appreciate.
Glad to see that there are three movies I’ve seen nominated for best picture. Most of the time the movies nominated for best picture are ones that either I haven’t seen or haven’t heard of.
I have a feeling that with more people going to theatres this year and appreciating that experience post-pandemic, combined with the amount of recognizable films in the nominations being higher than normal, these Oscars won't continue the downward ratings trend its had.
except maybe for Jimmy Kimmel
Great video! I agree with almost everything you said in this video, and yeah RRR being snubbed really annoys me too. Maverick not getting a cinematography nomination and James Cameron not getting a best director nomination was weird too. But what annoys the most is how they treated Babylon. It should 100% have been nominated for best picture. Chazelle should've been nominated for best director too, and Margot absolutely deserved a best actress after that career best performance in Babylon. Hopefully Maverick wins a couple of Oscars and Justin Hurwitz gets best score though :)
I didn't remember, but the first time I saw Hong Chau, was in the TV show "How I met your mother", doing a REALLY small character called "Cook Pu", and they make fun all the episode about her name...now she is nominated for an Oscar, what a journey. Also I watched her in HBO's show Watchmen, and she was incredible as this creepy character "Lady Trieu". And now the amazing The Menu, The Whale and getting nominated in one year.
So glad she is getting attention she deserves, like Brendan Fraser has been saying in every internview, her work is amazing.
For VFX, that doesn’t necessarily mean CGI. Practical effects are still visual effects, hence why Top Gun got a nomination. Similar thing to Mad Max Fury Road, a lot of practical special effects
I’m glad The Batman got some recognition! I would have wanted Paul Dano and Gabriel LaBelle for The Fabelmans to get in. Also unpopular opinion, I think Tom Hanks should have gotten more talk for Elvis
Hong Chau was also in the HBO Watchmen series. Glad she’s finally getting more recognition
Happy new year Sean
This could possibly be the best Oscars lineup yet…
I’m also surprised that many of the films nominated, I’ve actually seen myself?!
Usually it’s films I had never even heard of before!
But I guess that’s the wonder of cinema right?
So many films just slip under the radar when they are up against massive Marvel productions, films like Top Gun Maverick and Avatar etc.
But I’m so glad that there seems to be the right balance this year of big blockbusters, indie films and foreign films.
For best actor I'm really hoping it will be Austin Butler!
I thought he was incredible and I really hope that he gets the recognition he deserves.
Rami Malek won an Oscar, Taron Egerton was unfortunately snubbed so I’m rooting for Austin this year!
For best actress, I’m predicting Michelle Yeoh…
For best supporting actor, I’m predicting Ke Huy Quan.
For best supporting actress, I’m rooting for Angela Bassett!
You definitely should check all quiet on the western front
Its such a great experience from beginning to end
The Northman, Menu, Nope, and The Batman got snubbed so hard
As a Bollywood/South Indian Movies fan, I’m so happy Sean took his first step into it, but there’s so many other movies better than RRR I think he needs to watch😂
Any recommendations? I loved RRR and want more films like it.
I personally hate over the top movies like RRR, but there's no way any other Indian movie comes close to the over-the top style direction & effects of that movie. It made $150MM in the global box office making it the tenth highest grossing film in the world last year. There was really no other competition out of Indian cinema last year, other than maybe Pusha/KGF which both have much worse effects & story direction.
There are better Indian movies IMO like: PK, Dangal, Kapoor and Sons (but these movies fall into an entirely different Genre).
I saw RRR and the baahubali movies, what other recs do you have?
@@hasanthedumb5340 what's your genre
@@Cyclone1293 what's your favourite genre
I'd 1000% recommend All Quiet
Mike White went from writing Jack Black comedies to becoming THE guy on television with The White Lotus. Crazy how writers can switch their reputations in an instant.
You should definitely watch all quiet on the western front before the Oscars. Its an amazing film and I believe it’s going to do really well in the Oscars
I thought Black Panther 2 and The Batman getting beat out for Best Picture by Avatar 2. They’re both objectively better in pretty much every way that isn’t visually
I think Top Gun Maverick got nominated because some of the shots are compositions of real filmed shots. Like when Maverick flies up past the two jets in training, those are two shots stitched together
Love your dissection of different reasons things get nominated
Danielle Deadwyler (for Till) and RRR got snubbed.
Fingers crossed for Everything Everywhere All at Once.
You need to see All Quiet on the Western Front. It's such a great(but also depressing) war movie. Very brutal as well. (It's german fyi)
Is it as good as the book?
I think the biggest shocking surprise for me was best actress, but I’m looking forward to seeing what will win
Hey Sean I thought it was really cool that you took the time to react to the Oscar nominations being announced. I completely agree with you that Baz should’ve been nominated for Best Director for directing Elvis. I thought he did a great job with that film and honestly out of the 10 Best Picture nominees, Elvis was my favorite and I hope it does well on Oscars night.
The Batman for cinematography, directing or even the score was disappointing. Mia Goth though, THE biggest snub.
For the Best Picture Flims My Favorite Had to be Top Gun Maverick that Flim Was A blast is Fun But very Emotional at the same time but Elvis Was my Second Favorite of last year to I thought Austin butler did An Amazing job as Elvis presley.
I know a lot of non-Indian Westerners loved RRR but I'm really curious to know how many Bollywood films they've watched prior to RRR. RRR is in the spirit of Tollywood and Bollywood - pure bombastic entertainment. But a lot of other Indian movies are similar and I'm just curious if RRR was an introduction to Indian cinema for many of these reviewers calling for it to have been a Best Picture nominee, or if they actually have seen other Indian films.
All quiet on the western front is a must watch
Totally agree with you Sean on how it is good to see how balanced the best picture nominees are this year, including bigger movies that are just as good cinematic wise as other smaller lesser known movies. Most of the past few years’ nominees haven’t been this balanced so this is good to see
If they’re gonna do credit songs for Original Song. HELLO! The Weeknds song for Avatar 2 that song evokes huge emotions out of you when the lights come back on after the movie. Also Lift Me Up from BP2 is incredible when it comes to emotion
I have the same opinion on the best original song. I prefer when the academy chooses songs that are relevant to the film. I wish they nominated New Body Rhonba from White Noise this year
Sean you need to see All Quiet on the Western Front. One of the best remakes of all time
Best Visual Effects: I am torn between Top Gun Maverick and Black Panther Wakanda Forever as far as my choice.
Best Original Song: Hold My Hand is my choice
Best Film Editing: Easily my choice is Top Gun Maverick
Best Adapted Screenplay: My choice is Top Gun Maverick
Best Supported Actress: My choice is Angela Bassett
Best Picture: My choice easily Top Gun Maverick
I'm really upset that Nope didn't get any nominations. At least give it to best sound. Horror movies don't usually get to me, but Nope terrified me. The digestion scene stayed with me for weeks.
was not that great to be fair
@@johansvensson833 nah it was very good
I'm disappointed but not suprised about Mia Goth not getting nominated for Pearl.
Of course Top Gun Maverick is an adapted screenplay Sean. They adapted it from Star Wars; A New Hope
Actually, in Top Gun Maverick when Maverick, Peggy and her daughter are in the bar Hold My
Hand in the background. I love your channel though ❤️🤍💛
I'm actually excited to watch most of the nominated films this year. Unfortunately here in Mexico most Oscar nominees come out until February and March
I really hope all quiet on the western front wins. It will bring more attention to foreign films especially german ones. They're very overlooked
The visual effects for Top Gun are like the missiles shot and SAM turrets. No way they had live ammo near those aircraft
I just can’t believe they nominated 2 or 3 widely loved block busters for best pictures for ounce.
Kerry Condon also voices FRIDAY in the MCU
Danielle Deadwyler got sub for best actress is "Till."
RRR got subbed for best picture
The Batman subbed for cinematography
Dude you need to watch All Quiet on the Western Front. Fantastic film.
Was never gonna happen, but Terrifier 2 honestly did deserve a Best Visual Effects nomination
Ok Sean you need to watch the Goonies it is my favorite movie and I recommend watching it with your son because I watched it for the first time when I was little and it was a really special memory
The Indian cinema board chose to submit Last Film Show for International Feature rather than RRR, that's why it wasn't eligible.
I'm just really happy Puss In Boots 2 got the nomation it deserves
Great vid Sean!
Danielle Deadwyler is the biggest snub for Till, the best acting by a woman.
Hey Sean, to answer your question about RRR… each country gets to submit a film to be considered and India submitted a different film. So RRR was unfortunately not eligible for the international film Oscar
I was honestly surprised that The Menu and The Northman didn’t get a single nomination.
RRR seriously deserves to be in many catagories! Thanks!
India didn’t put RRR up for foreign film. That’s the reason. Otherwise it should’ve been nominated.
Puss in boots should win the animated feature Oscar
Assuming the animated category isn’t rigged and given to Pixar cause it’s Pixar, it should be either Puss or Pinocchio, both great picks honestly, wouldn’t be upsetting if one or the other win it imo. Never saw Marcel tho, maybe that’s a sleeping beast waiting to wake up (for lack of a better metaphor)
Im with you. I hope Puss in Boots wins but sadly it may go to Pinocchio
Think about, if Puss in Boots wins, it will be the first spider verse inspired animated movie to win. Just like how it happened with Arcane at the Game Awards
Top Gun not getting nominated for cinematography but for Screenplay is baffling to me.
Gotta watch The Quiet Girl, easily one of the best of the year
The score of Jordan Peele’s goes so hard, I'm mad it didn't get a nomination for Best Score 😔
