1994 was undoubtedly one of the greatest years for music, so many great albums... Jeff Buckley - Grace, Soundgarden - Superunknown, Stone Temple Pilots - Purple, Pearl Jam - Vitalogy, Liz Phair - Whip-Smart, Meat Puppets - Too High to Die, Beck - Mellow Gold, Live - Throwing Copper... just to mention a few and of course sadly Kurt died, I had a ticket to see them but never did.
But praise joy 1994 is still paying out with - Soul Coughing (who I am only now finding for the first time) - fantastic stuff.

l was at a club in Melbourne Australia and they had a downstairs area which was completely different to the rest of the club. l heard this hook and was instantly drawn to it. The DJ would put this on around 5am-ish and he would shout, '..and you are LIS-EN-INGGG to FUCKING MELBOURNE!!!' and the crowd would erupt!! It was mental and absolutely mind-numbing t the same time. lt was so infectious, l would find myself frequently at that club just so l could be in that basement around 4am -6am to make sure l had my hit before heading home (work or no work in 3 hours time).

I remember driving through San Fernando Valley many years ago, ironically enough, very close to Reseda, when I first heard this song. The song was introduced as the first time it was being played and after the song, the DJ didn't mention the song or the band's name! Something that I am quite sure, was deliberate in order to generate curiosity and buzz. Still, after hearing this song, I was immediately floored! As a musician, I could immediately hear the special sound in this band. This band took several concepts and made something unique which had never heard before; at least not like this. This will always be one of my favorite songs from this album.

@@2metersessies The way the snare, bass, and sampled horns are mixed together adds this hypnotic, almost cinematic undercurrent to the whole thing. That mix pulls you in, sets the mood, and makes the spoken words hit even harder. The raw, surreal blend of cynicism and poetry, the imagery, the tone, the weirdly hypnotic rhythm-it all felt like truth, even if I couldn’t fully understand it. It felt adult, like I was eavesdropping on a world I hadn’t entered yet, and that made it both unsettling and fascinating.

I've been asking myself this for a long time. "Down To This" and "Uh Zoom Zip" were uploaded from it. Search those on youtube. Maybe we can petition the meter sessies for more?

I always found the line about "a screen five feet long" amusing and confusing. It's like Dr. Evil's ONE MILLION DOLLARS.

His name will be five feet long on the screen, not the screen itself

@@cardboardgraham That's one way of interpreting it I guess, although his delivery is vague.

....so ahead of their time ...all of them are solid ...also using samples at that time wasn't as easy as it is now to do on ableton live , etc , it was a fuking pain in the azz...floppies and zip drives and all other dead fossils of various forms of multimedia , caught in the tar pits that was that time ......

It's interesting: Doughty had accessible, catchy tunes that the rest of the band had little interest in, while the rest of the band had weird, experimental stuff that pushed the label, but they wanted to be famous, while Doughty just wanted to write the kind of music that would make the rest of the band famous.
