    I've had my Cockateils for just over two months now and have learned a lot, quickly from both yours and Sophie's channels. While I'd prefer my cage to be bigger (I'll plan for that when I move house) I've managed to make it an engaging space for them. They spend quite a bit of time out and are at the stage when they go in themselves without much prompting. Thanks for your videos, they are really useful and fun!

    I have a flight cage for my little violet pied budgie, Indi! He loves it, and I still let him out for a couple hours every day so he can still fly around properly! It's filled with natural dead-end perches I made myself from native Australian branches! I put newspaper on top of the bars and change it every 1-2 days so he can run around comfortably!

    I can safely say my conure uses the floor of her flight cage, but I also put interesting things down there. Her foot toys are down there, she has three perches there, and a foraging wheel with her toys hanging higher up. I wanted her to be able to utilize all the of the space ^^

    I've actually discovered some problems with my conure which I think are happening because he is too dependent on me (attention biting). I had previously had him out whenever I was in the room. Of course I like to have my birds out as much as possible but I've learned it is just as important for your bird to see they can be in the same room as you and also be independent.

    • @TheParrotTeacher
      @TheParrotTeacher  3 роки тому +2

      Hey Midnight,
      It's a very valid point! Conures are very prone to attention biting (Scampi still does it a little despite training.)
      We are the same, we love to have ours out, but as you say independent time is just as important, be it in the cage, on a stand or in a bird room!

    • @midnightskittles8032

      @@TheParrotTeacher My conure is still young so I think part of it is just testing boundaries. However, he will go through phases where he breaks skin multiple times in short periods of times and although biting is a part of birds I am trying to find lots of ways to discourage this.

    • @TheParrotTeacher
      @TheParrotTeacher  3 роки тому +2

      @@midnightskittles8032 Hey there!
      Almost certainly is testing boundaries or biting for attention. Luckily for us all of our rescue conures have been trained out of biting through the skin, but Scampi especially does still nip or get over excited (like on my ear lobe as I write this message instead of playing with him!)
      I wouldn't agree that biting is a part of having birds though! There are things we can do to train, notice and encourage other behaviours. Do you do target training with them? A good way of getting them to moderate bite force is through "gentle targeting" You encourage them to touch the target stick at a longer distance and only reward with gentle touches. This helped loads with Olive (one of our rescues)
      Conures are also exceptionally reactive to sound and males get overstimulated easily. Keeping a calm environment helps loads I've found as well as not reacting to biting. It's also helped loads of our clients in combination with the targeting mentioned above.
      There's other methods too such as training incompatible behaviours, redirection, dietary solutions (to help with hormones with are the biggest cause of biting) etc!

    • @midnightskittles8032
      @midnightskittles8032 3 роки тому +1

      @@TheParrotTeacher
      I have done lots of target training! I've been trying to do it for a while each day.
      The next thing I want to do is work on redirecting onto something else, though I'm not sure entirely how to do that yet.
      I try not to react to the bites but it is very hard not to sometimes. Those little conure bites hurt so much for such a small beak! He gets overstimulated and sometimes when he starts biting he will refuse to step off and just continue biting.
      I've also tried setting him on the floor when he bites and just ignoring him for a minute. This seems to help for the time being as after trying to bite a couple times he will realize that takes my attention from him.
      It's definitely a challenge. Before my little guy Alfie I've only worked with budgies and they never have had any sort of behavioural problems. Even with all the research I did it was still hard to fully grasp how hard it could be. I had the mindset of that since my care is good I wont have bad problems. I've obviously learned this is very false.

    • @TheParrotTeacher
      @TheParrotTeacher  3 роки тому +1

      @@midnightskittles8032
      Sounds like a positive thing to do. It's something we routinely recommend (along with many bird trainers!) so it's awesome you already do it.
      Redirection can be done most simply with targeting. So he is biting you, you offer the stick down your arm and ask him to target. In theory he targets and then gets his reward instead of biting you. It's an incompatible behaviour.
      You can also use tricks as incompatible behaviours such as spin, hi 5, wave etc. You can also try redirecting to a station.
      If you haven't already make sure to establish a treat hierarchy (I have a video on this) to make sure you're using the highest possible value treat!
      That's very true. It can be exceptionally hard not to react, especially when they nip something sensitive like an ear or cheek!
      Neutral area is also a great thing to do! Floor is good as it wouldn't be considered a punishment too!
      It varies from individual bird to bird. Pickles is absolutely lovely with biting and very rarely does it despite being a rescue. Scampi is just a little monster full of energy and Olive was just never taught not to bite/respected!
      Do you give Alfie any Chamomile? It's one of those awesome supplements that is great for hormonal behaviour and is also calming.

Do you throw away the dirty substrate and just replace it with fresh substrate? And since it mainly looked like wood chips in your video, do you think it would be suitable to burn the used substrate out in the garden as to not waste it?

      Generally we "pick" once or twice a day to remove any droppings or old food, this usually takes about 1-2 mins per cage. We do a full replace of substrate once a week like I show in the video!

    I watched this video because I worried about my cage being wrong. I have a female Quaker and female Sun who have been housed together for 17 years. I hear a lot of people talking about how you need more width and not to be tall and narrow. My cage is much more taller than wide but because my girls love to climb up and down I never saw it as a problem. And yes they never fly inside the cage. They only hop or flap their wings in place.

    • @TheParrotTeacher
      @TheParrotTeacher  Рік тому +1

      Hey Jennifer,
      Width can often be useful. I try to say get the biggest you can manage in both directions. It is ironic how people often mention width with smaller birds in proportion to size, rather than big ones (where they barely have any!)
      So the advise can be a bit skewed.
      If they enjoy crawling, have enough space, don't fight and are out lots then I can't imagine it being an issue!

      So the conure cages are roughly 1/2 - 2/3's the size of the boys flight cage. Honestly, we feel they are too small for them and are planning to upgrade them. We wanted larger but not intimidating cages for them (as they are rescues.)
      Pickle's is is the best one as she gets a bit scared in large cages due to her past experiences and it provides a good amount of height and foraging space for her. Annoyingly it's no longer made! Stay tuned on this topic!

    Hi there what about multiple cages? We have a large one on our dining table in the living area so that our bird has a safe area where he can see us but we have also purchased one the size of yours, and weren't sure if we should just migrate to the larger one ( with our home we don't have much space so either have to place it in our laundry away from us or outside. Would you have any advice on this at all? it is okay for us to get our bird use to using both? Maybe using the larger cage to sleep in? Ideally I would prefer to just have our cockatiel in the larger cage but am worried about him not being to see us when he's in there

    • @TheParrotTeacher
      @TheParrotTeacher  3 роки тому +1

      Hey Teagan,
      Some people do have what's called a "sleeper" cage that the bird just goes into to sleep. This tends to be the smaller one. The larger one tends to be their "active" cage.
      You can do that, the only thing I'd be worried about is disruption to your birds routines and potential stress. However if you try it and find they aren't bothered by it at all it can work pretty well!
      You could potentially just have a perch with a nice stand or play stand for your bird to spend time with you in your living area. It might take some stationing training though if you want them to reliably spend time on there or go there if you need them to be there while you do things!

      Hey Andy,
      I'd go for as big as you can manage for a ringneck. Mostly because of their exceptionally long tail and slightly larger wingspan for a medium bird. I wouldn't aim for the bird to fly in the cage as honestly for many that's impossible to achieve due to size limitations (unless it's an aviary or bird room!)
      I'd aim to give them enough space to stretch their wings properly and move around comfortably. Think of the cage as a bedroom. They want a comfortable place to sleep, lots of room to move around in and play with toys. Foraging opportunities etc etc! The flight comes outside of the cage!

    I started out with a smaller cage, for 2 budgies it was what I could afford at the time. It wasn't tiny tiny ( www.amazon.com/gp/product/B075DX5LD1/ ) The older model, but same dimensions of that link. At the time it was $55 US. I felt bad for how small it was. 5 months later I was able to buy a large flight cage ( www.amazon.com/gp/product/B00176F5L0/ ), and also get 2 more budgies. I now house 6 in the larger flight cage. I know some people who house 10 or more in that small $55 cage. Not much you can say or do about it is the sad truth. I still keep the old cage in case I need to quarantine or temporarily house. Not sure what else to do with it. If I sell it, I know who ever buys it would use it for a permeate cage for something larger than a budgie I am sure, or try to cram 20 small birds into it. It is to bad the rest of the world hasn't gotten on board with the laws Sweden passed for minimal parrot cage sizes by species.
    Even with the larger flight cage, even though budgies can get a short flight across, it really isn't enough. I am thinking of building an outdoor aviary this year, or next year. I think it would be nice for the summer. Bit worried I wouldn't be able to get them back into the house ever again though lol.
    I let my birds out in the morning. I kinda just let them free fly around the room, and visit me throughout the day. I already know the issues that can cause. Buddy is getting very clingy. To me that is fine though, I am with them all day. It would be nice if he would self entertain more, I just cannot seem to get him interested in many toys. Guess he is like me, bored to easy lol. I am not really sure what other issues having your birds outside their cages all day can cause. I am just glad everyone puts themselves to bed for the night (goes back into the cage, sometimes the wrong one lol).
    Never understood wide is better than tall. Parrots love to climb. They cannot get a ton of flight inside a short wide cage anyway. I agree on getting both tall and wide when possible. I would rather birds get a ton of climbing inside their cage, where it is easy with the bars, perches, and toys, and then, during the day, fly all they want outside the cage.
    Punish your kid by putting them in their room, you know... where all their toys are... Yea, it doesn't work with birds either LOL. I used to get in trouble just so I would get grounded, cause I would rather be in my room than outside. I bet birds do the same thing when they would rather be in their cage. They learn this stuff. You think it is punishment, they think its a reward, so they bite harder and harder.

      Hey An!
      I think many people do start out small, especially when budget, space or just not being told the right thing come into play. Pet shops don't help there as many just want to make a sale and people don't always research!
      It's good you kept it, as you say it's useful for those kinds of purposes and they now have a big cage!
      Sounds like an awesome idea! Make sure you have a kind of compartment with 2 doors in it! So you can step in, shut a door and then open the other!
      I think that's cockatiels for you. They can be very clingy sometimes, which is adorable but can be trained out to an extent. It's worth doing just so you get some time and they relax more!
      Me neither! I get some of the arguments on the issue from both sides, but I feel one side is often touted as the best while the other gets a harsh deal!
      Lol that's for sure!

      @@TheParrotTeacher For sure on the 2 compartment thing.
      If I had my dream wish, it would be a fully enclosed porch going outside (from my bird's room). That I could just have a sliding door to open and close when need be. Just sucks that I wouldn't be able to use it year round for the birds.... stupid freezing cold winters here :(
      Hope everything is going well, give Sophie a hug from me ok? (just came from her channel, sounds like she could use a hug!)
