Picked up a 2022 XL Marlin 6 in black with yellow tags a couple of weeks ago. Walked into a shop about 50 miles from home and there they were. Some 2022 Marlin 5's and 6's. I absolutely love this bike. My brother has a 2021 Marlin 5 in Orange and I really liked it. Yes, I paid a bit more due to the bike shortage but I dont care. I'm no newbie to riding. Been riding mtn and road for many years and we can outgrow a Walmart bike or a 6k bike. We all have different styles of riding and mine is more on the relaxed side now. Will probably upgrade the fork some day and go tubeless. Bought some Maxxis Ardent skin walls for another bike, they'll go on my 6 when I go tubeless. Let's all enjoy our Marlin 6's. Forget about the naysayers.
I just got my 22 Marlin 7 about 2 months ago, love it. I've got a little over 400 miles on it. Mostly road miles but some off road, handles both great. Great video!
Nice. I went with the 6 knowing I would upgrade over time perhaps to more than what the 7 offered. I now have about 1200 miles on mine. Mostly gravel and pavement, with some single track, that I see you have seen as well. Keep Bikin'!
@@tomdeighton1045 I put almost 3,000 miles on it, mostly road. I enjoyed the road handling. Sold it a year ago to a friend who is continuing to put miles on it. I bought the Roscoe 7. I've got 2,600 miles on it already.
@tomdeighton1045 I had the Marlin 7 and for my riding it was plenty fast enough. It wasn't built for road racing lol. But I like riding a mountain bike all the time in case I decide to do a trail in the middle of a ride. For me it was a good all around bike.
You really can go wrong with any of them. Just depends on whether you want to save some money up front for upgrades, or go full on 8 and be done. And the new faded colors Trek came out with for the 2022s! I love the red on my 2021, but the red to black fade on the 2022, wow! What a great looking bike. They also went to a 1by drivetrain on the 6, which is giving me even more buyers remorse after hitting Colorado trail with the 2x8. I really needed a better climbing gear. Good luck on your search. I hear the wait times are still pretty long.
Marlins really are pretty versatile. I've ridden my late model (2019) formerly 3x9/now 1x9 Marlin 7 up to 40 miles in hilly Western PA and eastern OH no problem and I'm a 52 year old, 5'10", 220 pound "Clydesdale."
Agreed. I was originally looking at a dual sport, but I wanted something beefier for rougher trails. My worry was that I would be adding a lot of rolling resistance and making longer rides harder. I couldn't have been more wrong. My longest rides so far are 45 on gravel and 60 on pavement. I'm 5 years your elder, but about the same "Clydesdale" height and weight.
@@RoaminLama age is not a number but if you don’t live life properly that number won’t get very high. That was the one thing my dad got to teach me and something I try not to follow by his example. I notice that you have tubeless ready Maxxis tires. FWIW I also made that upgrade and used gorilla tape to do the conversion. Highly recommended if you need more traction on the rough or less weight/rolling resistance on the smooth. Pumping the fork is also a great technique to learn for quick bursts of speed. That fork comes in handy when you’re on a crowded walking trail and need to evade dogs on long - or no leashes! A dropper post will also help keep you from going OTB.
@@RoaminLama We just got my 15yo the 2022 Marlin 5 in radioactive red which is nearly identical to your 2021 Marlin 6. The difference is that the cassette is a 12-34t 8 speed and the logos are white. We already got a 15 mile ride in this year on the local rail trail and he made great time on it. We looked at the 2022 Dual Sports and the Marlin 6 but he felt the 5 was best for him.
I loved having the Marlin- gave it a nice tribute at the end of its final ride. Got a deal too good to pass up on my Top Fuel- otherwise it would still be my daily driver. So glad I found your channel. #M6
@@RoaminLama Yeah, actually rolls a bit better, in my opinion. 2.4" tires, so not too wide, and even though it's a 1x12, the range in the cassette (11x50) makes it a bit easier up hills as well. I went with the Top Fuel over, say a Fuel EX due to it's ability to climb, I didn't want 2.6"s on the front, and the remote lockout feature (for both the fork and shock) in the cockpit. It feels like a beefier Marlin. Very familiar riding feel, in all of the best ways.
What an awesome video and what a beautiful park! So well done! Gotta ask...what software did you use for the elevation, trail tracking, and such? I have seen similar stuff like that in the past but those graphics are significantly better. Thank you for posting. A really great video!
Thanks for the nice comments. I use a GoPro to track my rides vie it's GPS, then I use an app called Telemetry Overlay which was developed by a guy in Portugal. Once I run the footage through that program it creates multiple gauges that I can then customize and position on screen.
First off, thanks you for watching and subscribing to the channel. The overlays are a multi step, time consuming process. First I track my ride with a Garmin bike computer and speed sensor. Then I down load the GPX file from that ride and have it converted to a .mgjson file for use in After Effects. I then load that file into a project file I purchased and all the overlays are created. Then I have to render them to keyable video files. That's the time consuming part. An hour long track can take up to 27 hours to render. I was planning on making a video about this process, and now that you have asked the question, I will definitely make a Q and A Wednesday video on this process in the coming weeks.
i have the trek Domane for the road, the Checkpoint for gravel and i just bought the Marlin 6 for more off road, mud, rocks, roots and such.....i just needed a beginner mountain bike. have you taken it on anything more off road? hope i made the right choice.
I have, check out this playlist. I did three singletracks on my trip to Colorado last summer. Also, for a more cross country ride here's Hog Run in North Carolina:ua-cam.com/video/YADaQz4vtA4/v-deo.html. This was done with the stock tires, but, I did upgrade to Maxxis tires before the Colorado trip, but everything else on the bike is stock.
Definitely not. The gravel sections are crushed limestone. Very smooth. And most of the sharper turns are paved, so traction isn’t an issue with most tires.

Is it good for long bike rides on road

@davidr.4699 how was the marlin 6 in terms of drivetrain? Was the 1by 10 slow?

Your videos are the best
Thank you.
This a solid, real-life test. Nice. Should have more views.
Thank you! And, thanks for watching. I'm glad you got some value out of it.👍
I had the original Gary fisher marlin, loved it. Trying to decide which marlin to go with now

How is the Top Fuel on longer trails? Does it roll as easy as the #M6? And are there enough gears?

Is this trail too rough for a hybrid or a road bike?
Definitely not. The gravel sections are crushed limestone. Very smooth. And most of the sharper turns are paved, so traction isn’t an issue with most tires.
Looks great what State?
Illinois, up in McHenry county
The Marlin 6 has a one=by drivetrain. You said 2 X 8 ???
That started with the 2022 model. Mine is a 2021 and it has a 2x8.
Thank's for the clarification. I am going to get an M6 so that concerned me.
How smooth is the ride from 0 to 10 ?
On this gravel travel trail, I'd give it a 8, after putting on the Maxxis tires, 10.
@@RoaminLama wow! 10! Didn't know the maxxis tires add so much comfort!
Which maxxis tires please? I understand there are multiple types I wonder which ones you got for the jump in comfort from 8 to 10!
I have the Maxxis Ikons, full review here: ua-cam.com/video/C4dIW2K8vc0/v-deo.html
Marlin 6 which year?
2021
