Roamin' with The Lama
United States
Приєднався 24 січ 2020
I've been a professional film and video editor for 30+ years. After many long days in an edit suite eating delivery, I found myself at 54 years old, very over weight and searching for something more. I was pre-diabetic and borderline high cholesterol. I started walking, hiking and cycling in my spare time. All those maladies disappeared after 12 months. I want to share with all, fun trails to bike, hike and off-road. I publish all my rides with telemetry so you can get a feel for what you'll encounter and when.

Mississippi Palisades State Park Campground - 3 Minute Review #rvlife #travel #campgroundreviews

I could not believe how empty this beautiful campground was. Especially during fall color season. Camping in this state park is a great way to feel away from it all yet close enough to town to pick up some provisions you may have forgotten at home. Wonderful hiking trails up in the bluffs with beautiful overlooks of the Mississippi. An absolute steal at $20 per night, (2024 rates), for spacious...

Eagle RV Park is a great home base to explore the Thermopolis Wyoming area. Just minutes away from Hot Springs State Park where you can hike or bike trails, take a scenic drive, view buffalo or soak in the Mineral Spring water in one of three facilities. The RV Park is also close to Wind River Canyon and the Boysen State Park. 30 minutes Northwest view ancient Petroglyphs at Legend Rock. This c...

Put on your VR googles and take a relaxing, scenic drive on the Needles Highway in Custer State Park, South Dakota. This is such a beautiful drive that isn’t terribly long. The two tunnels are really tight, I had to fold my mirrors in so they wouldn’t scrape the sides. Put on your VR googles and take a relaxing, scenic drive on the Beartooth Highway. I took this drive on the last day the highway was open in 2023. Because of the length of the entire drive, I condensed the sections between Red Lodge and the mountain climb, as well as at the end, after the Top of the World Store and Sunlight Bridge in Wyoming. Hop on your stationary bike and take a ride with the Lama through beautiful rural Wisconsin. In this video we'll travel from tunnel 3 to Sparta on the Elroy-Sparta Trail. We'll descend 426 feet over the next nine miles. After 25 miles and 3 long climbs, it's hard to take advantage of the downhill. But it's a good time to cruse and enjoy the scenery. Thank you for sharing this video! I used to live in Glen Ellyn, and this was my ‘go to’ Ride on most weekends! 😊
I'm glad you enjoyed it.
Good information, thank you.
You are welcome, thank you for watching!
All the best to you and yours in 2025❤
Happy New Years to you too.
I'm from Argentina, I bought a Trek Procaliber 9.5 and it comes with XR2 and they skid. First ride and I had an accident. No one had any problems with them.
Was it on tarmac, gravel or dirt? The knobs are small, I would break loose on gravel often with the XR2s, a big reason I swapped to the Maxxis. But for tarmac, (pavement), always allow a little break in time on the tires, they tend to me a little slick on asphalt until they're "broken in".
@ My English is bad. It was on dirt. I just hit some loose dirt on a curve. With the Maxxis Icons from my previous bike I never had any problems on that same circuit. Thanks for your answer.
Merry Christmas and a Happy New Year to you too.
I've biked the Rural section before - nice Trail.
Love the video, but what always amazes me when riding the path is how some people don’t understand they are not the only people on the path.
Great video ... the 360 view really makes me wish i could see this. I have heard about this road most of my life .... some day my turn will come to see this live
I am glad you enjoyed it. The whole area around Custer State Park is definitely a must see. Hope you get out there soon.
Still a great bike ,I just buy new one
Congrats, you'll get many mile of enjoyment out of it.
Happy Thanksgiving. Are you going to be riding your bike on trails again? Or are you done with that.
More trails coming for sure. I’ve done most of the interesting ones near Chicago, so I do need to travel, (at least days trips), to trails I have on my list. Plus having RSV, then Covid last winter, really killed my stamina this summer. Hoping to be in better cycling shape in 25.
@RoaminLama hope you get better soon. I was going to go biking with you and your friend, forgot what his name was when you guys were riding the Palos canal area. But I kept getting very busy with other stuff.
No worries. I know all to well about getting busy. Maybe next summer.
Lama you consistently produce such quality content! That experiment with the downhill roll and the arial view + telemetry was extraordinary! Never seen that any other place on UA-cam. Just an awesome, well thought out science experiment! Especially with your theory on the effort and calories burned. This episode was beyond great! Appreciate your efforts! A++
Thank you for the kind words. I’m glad you enjoy my work.
My dad moved out to Galena a decade or so ago and I make it up there every so often, and it's a charming spot with rolling hills and terrible, although free, parking. It also evidently stood in for Chisholm, MN as a filming location in "Field Of Dreams" as I'm told each and every time I visit without fail.
We were going to stop by Field of Dreams and put it in the video, but I'm told it's not dog friendly, (and my wife could care less about baseball.)
They missed an opportunity creating a dog park called "Field of Streams" with a giant fire hydrant - dog - lifting - leg motif, but it is what it is.
@@ahsv64 🤣
Great stuff! I'll be riding and filming on it tomorrow!
Enjoy! It’s definitely a bucket list trail.
Great video … I like that trail, although I have never ridden the entire thing. Usually start at the southern end and go about 10 or miles then back again,
Lama, this video is not working properly. When I adjust the playback speed to 2X the speedometer remains at 10mph and doesn't increase to 20mph. Just kidding!!! Just wanted to say I really enjoy your videos. You have travelled on some really neat trails! Really cool stuff you do with the drones, 360 camera views, and the telemetry! Very tech savy! Appreciate the time, effort, and extra polish you put into producing such great content!
Thank you so much. Ready glad you enjoy the videos. I wish I had a 2x button for some of my rides, I could do longer trails in half the time!
I just did this trail. I did Sparta to Elroy and then turned around and went back. Let me tell you the Down hill section from tunnel 3 to Sparta was well welcomed. I was flying on it.
Good on ya! Yea the uphills aren't steep, they just go on forever. The walk through the tunnels and the downhills are welcome breaks for sure.
@@RoaminLama every tunnel on the way back was a well earned break for my knees, wrists neck. you get done walking through the tunnel jump back on and it feels good
I have lived in Chicago for many years and I didn't know about this trail. Thank great video,
So glad you enjoyed it, and found a new trail. Hope to see you out there. Keep Bikin’!
Welcome to the 60's group. I turned 60 in May. Glad to see you are uploading again. I really enjoy your videos. Keep em coming. Age is just a number.
Seems like the 2023 Maxxis Ikon with the new Maxxspeed compound runs narrower than this version of Ikon. I have the 2023 2.35 width Ikons on my 2021 Marlin 5 with about 5mm clearance on the rear.
It may have I little less sidewall as well so it fits the flare better. I'm going to have to check the new ones out! Thanks for the info.
Nice video! Thanks.
Thank you for giving it a watch. I’m glad you enjoyed it.
This was very informative, thanks for taking the time to put this together!
Thank you so much fro the kind words. Making these videos is a labor of love. My love for riding new trials and my love for film and video editing.

Just in the long grassy areas.
Sigh. Now I feel that i have to get one of those cams. Thx. ;-P
Use the link in the description, it helps me make more videos and costs you no extra.
Awesome video! My seven year old and I were planning on doing the Elroy-Sparta trail, but after seeing the length of this trail, it's shadiness, and great scenery, you have changed our minds! Looks like it'll be a blast and a trip to remember!
I'm so glad you enjoyed it. Have a great time on this beautiful trail. Keep bikin'!
🎉
Did it the 1st time at 60. On the one hand it kind of cheeses you off getting passed by all these other people when you stop for a rest and they are just diddle-bopping along but then you think, "Oh yeah. I'm one of if not the oldest person on the mountain today and the dude that just passed me could be my grandson." Then it doesn't sting as much. 😊 I think "easy" is the wrong word because it's still tough as anything. Whenever I describe the 14rs I've done I go w/ "technical" instead of easy and there are no "easy" 14ers.
The easy came from what locals told me the night before in Georgetown. "It's the easiest 14er and the hardest 3 and a half miles you'll ever hike." Congrats on making it at the age of 60. And, thanks for watching.
Thank you for an excellent review.
You're welcome, I'm glad you enjoyed it.
Thank you for the great detailed information.
Thank you for watching.
Fantastic! I started riding this trail in 1982 up to '97 or '98 then with another group of friends in 2010 thru 2021 when trail conditions and closures had us start in '22 the Root River Trail system. I've seen gobs of bike videos but this is the absolute best; every mile, no stops and starts, great for continuity. The direction, speed, and especially the topography and distance done added hugely to the video. I started with section 2 and just had to watch section 1! I've chores to do now so 3 and 4 will have to wait until tomorrow morning. Thanks much!
Thank you so much for the kind words. It truly is a bucket list trail. Thanks so much for watching and keep bikin'!
@@RoaminLama Ha, no bike for me any more, I'm functionally blind and ride an ICE recumbent trike since 2018 (now motorized in 2024)! The trail looks good so maybe a return? So you'll record the Root River soon?
@@ianlindridge5378 I'm not familiar with the Root River trail. I live in Illinois so the next 2 trails on my list to log are closer to home. I hope to get back up there next spring to explore more. I'll look up the Root River and see if I can work that in.
Why do you keep calling it the Continental trail? And you need to spell check your titles. Nice video otherwise.
I wasn't familiar with area when I rode this trail and my Gaiagps app had it listed as the Continental trail, so that's what I though the name was when I did this video.
I visited this trail just before my 60th birthday, and I appreciate and concur with your favorable review of the trail. I have read so much about the poor condition of the pavement, but I think that the surface is not that bad and there are certainly not potholes. When I rode this trail, I enjoyed the scenery, and my mind was not on the pavement's condition. I actually think that the Omaha trail is more scenic than the famous Elroy-Sparta trail. Omaha Trail has some nice elevated views of the surrounding terrain and the Omaha tunnel is not too interminably long. In the raw footage (not the narration added later) there was a remark about "another washout".
Another awesome video, thank you!
Great Information in this video
Thank you and thanks for watching!
Thank you so much for the detail about the trail, road crossings and climbs but also your Marlin 6. 68 here and always looking for these moderate rides
Thank you for watching! I'm glad you enjoyed the ride. It's a trail I ride a lot, often adding the Cal-Sag to get the variety of gravel, dirt and pavement.
Thank you for your video! I just discovered this trail, even though I've lived near the starting point for a year. I'm getting my first bike and can't wait to start riding!
Thank you for watching! You're really going to enjoy this trail. From urban to suburban to rural all in one ride. Keep Bikin'!
Great video, along with your others. These deserve a lot more views!
Thank you, much appreciated.
What bike are you riding?
A Trek Marlin 6 on Maxis XC tires.
This ride brings back so many good memories. My dad really loved riding this trail!
It's really a great trail. I had a blast riding in.
We used to go here in the mid 80’s when I was a kid. We always stayed at Tunnel Trail Campground. The tunnels scared me so much!!
So glad you enjoyed it. And, yea, that campground looked nice. I stayed in Elroy so I had access to all 3 rail to trails that originate there.
Fantastic presentation of an awesome trail! Did you get picked up at the end? Not sure if they have a “shuttle” service in this area.
Thank you! My wife drove up from our campsite in Elroy and brought me back. As much as my ego wanted to do both ways, I couldn’t leave Mrs. The Lama at the campsite for the entire day. 😄
May I ask what is the app you use for the dashboard showing on the screen?
+@uestcpandou I made an entire video on just that. ua-cam.com/video/wzt2aZaDifA/v-deo.html
Great video. Production quality!
Thanks! I'm so glad you liked it. Keep Bikin'!
🎉🎉
Excellent video! Really enjoyed watching it!
I really appreciate the kind words. I'm glad you got something out of it. Thanks for watching and Keep Bikin'!

The is a great trail. In Montreal we have quite a few trails that follow linear features like canals and aqueducts. There is an urban rail loop that was abandoned years ago and it will be converted into a cycling path in the next 5 years.
Happy B-Day, Sir! Enjoyed your video. Rode from Sparta towards Elroy last year hitting the three tunnels and turning back. Still a good 50 miles.
Thank you for the birthday wishes . I did the Elroy-Sparta as well the following day. That video drops next week. I really enjoyed that ride.
Happy belated birthday, Mr. The Lama. It's a biggie, but it looks like you're living your best life. Maybe you can give a tech breakdown about your gear and setup, because I'd love to know how you do the pans from the secondary camera(s) while riding.
Thank you! I'm officially old enough to know better, yet young enough not to care. It's been a weird year, but I'm finally getting out more and getting in shape for longer rides. And, thanks for the set-up question. I'll whip up a short about my gear soon.
