Forged and Fabricated Coffee Table Base | Making Steel Tree
Вставка
- Опубліковано 29 вер 2024
- This forged tree table base is my largest and most complex blacksmithing project to date. The client has a 250+lb petrified wood slab that he would like to use as a table top, and wanted an organic tree-like base to set it atop. Using my power hammer, my friend's hydraulic press, an oxy torch, and a ton of elbow grease, I think I can safely say: Mission Accomplished. Thank you for watching!
P.S. This project tested almost every aspect of "making" I've learned over the years, and I'm proud to say I think I created something that the client will enjoy for many years to come. We've come a long way on this journey, and we've got calm sees ahead. Here's to the next one.

Your attention to detail and sense of aesthetics just blows me away. You always seem to be reaching for a beautiful, finished piece, in both your material/physical pieces and your cinematography. I think that you have the mind of an engineer and the soul of an artist, I applaud you for all that you do.
Thank you very much for the kind comments Raynola
Really phenomenal build Brett. You’re really starting to set yourself apart now! Keep up the good work. I’ve enjoyed watching your “process”😎
Thanks brother. Much appreciated
This is such a cool project! I actually kind of like it with the concrete on top, it is like the opposite of all those live edge tables with simple legs.
Right?! Reverse!
I really dig how you alternate between these kinds of videos, where you show us a more refined glimpse into your artistic process, with the more fun and whimsical style of build videos. It shows you take your work seriously, but not TOO seriously, if that makes any sense. It shows a real depth of passion for the crafts.
Never TOO serious ; ) thank you very much Nigel
A solid video of the process, great textures on the branches. Big projects means big learning, I loved it all.
Big learning indeed
Wow. Stunning work, Brett! And I really like the video style as well. Hope this video goes through the roof, would be much deserved!
Thank you very much
I love the new video style and I'm curious to know how much something like that costs? It's amazing how much it looks like wood. Very cool 👍
Give yourself a sense of an hourly rate for art/blacksmith work, then multiply that by about 40-50 hours.
Yes so happy to see your videos Brett. This project turned out very unique and most definitely beautiful. Hopefully you get great use out of it my friend. Love watching and learning from your videos. Can't wait to see what you throw in the forge next. Any more videos coming out on your house build channel? Soon. Keep up the great craftsmanship and hard work my friend Brett. Forge on. Keep making. God bless.
Soon, just waiting on more paperwork for the house to get sign off
@@skullandspade awesome best of luck. Can't wait.
"The process of growth", Brett you are in fact growing and exploring with each project and video. I'm here for it each time good sir.
Couldn't say it any better myself!
That’s what it’s all about
I`ve been a 3D modeler/graphic "artist" for twenty-seven years now... but after watching this, I can tell you that I`m no artist! That was... well hell, I just don`t have the words! Just amazing!!
Awmaaaan, thank you
Brett, that is breathtaking! You've come so far in your blacksmithing from just a few years ago! This is truly a beautiful piece of art! 👍👍
Thank you Tom!
It was a grand project that required all the skills you've built up over the years! Amazing!
The structural considerations that supported the heavy top, the strong base texture and shape that made the most of it, and your passion were very evident in the video! Thank you!
What he said 👆💪❤️
Thank you very much to you both. 🖤🖤🖤
The most ambitious and beautiful project I’ve seen in awhile! Outstanding work Brett!
Thank you!
So good Brett!
Thank you sir
@@skullandspade you are very welcome sir.
Dude this turned out amazing! Absolutely stunning! Now this is what I call work done by a master! Brett your freaking one talented guy!
Thank you ms linds!!!
I'm not usually a fan of this type of art but I love this piece. Great job man. Great job
To each their own
Wow that looks so good! I love the visual movement you were able to create. And the chill vibe of this video. Beautiful everything!
I must have had some chill experiences recently that lead to that….hmmmmm
you are f-ing crazy. in a good way. I`m so impressed I can't write a decent comment in english. nice job.
Nailed it
Great job with combining the techniques, materials and methods to create an amazing piece! I hope the client appreciates it!
I hope so too
8:30 O, that’s the top 🔝 or oooo, thaaaats the top…! 🤣🤣🤦🏻♂️
Just kidding Cap’n I’m so glad it didn’t turn out looking like a bunch of twisted metal welded up to look like a table base!
I really love it!!💪🏼🔥🔥🔥👍🏻
Nice work🙏🏻❤️
Thank you shindig dog!
@@skullandspade 🙏🏻❤️💪🏼
Beautiful work Brett and that texture you achieved is perfect.
Thank you Chad!
Anything you imagine is wonderful to watch and listen to. This is truly a beautiful piece of art.
Well that’s damn kind of you
This is so badass! I've loved every minute of your journey since leaving New York. Thanks for sharing.
Hooray! Thank you
Great result! Forming the branches with the torch looked really fun!
So much fun, but also so much gas used
@@skullandspade Yea, heat takes every opportunity to escape...
Amazing video and beautiful work 👍🍻
Lovely jubbly. Really nice and organic bud. I like it.
That texture is spot on. 👌
I hope the customer is pleased with it.
Woohoooo!
Hi @Brett my friend !What amazing work !😊👍Well done !Keep it up !Greeting #Bulatsschmiede from germany (Bulat the Blacksmith )😊🤙
Woohoo
That is awesome, Brett! So raw and gnarly and absolutely gorgeous! Form, function, aesthetics... this piece has it all, my friend!
Thank you!
Beautiful!!!
Both, the video and the table, both a perfect Composition. Beautiful!!! 🤗😍🤗👌
Thank you!
Man this looks sooooo good!!!
Thank you!
gorgeous table and video!
Wow! Thank you brother!
Love the texture! Your process is amazing! Always an ahhh moment!!
Thank you sir!
Wow. My favorite piece of yours, and that's saying something! Well done Sir.
Woohoo!
Watching you form chunks of metal into such a natural looking piece was breathtaking. It looks like an old tree growing twisted and curved by the winds and salt spray, on a rocky cliff on the Pacific coast.
Ugh, how perfect. Thank you
Absolutely stunning work! I love the use of the temporary base and pipe to get the form started and the oxy work looks so effective.
Thank you as always brother
So many beautiful shots to compliment a beautiful finished piece. I love the phonetic transcription of 'process' - spot on for how I'd hear you say it!
Thank you sir ; )
Outstanding - that's a really good-looking piece. Thanks for sharing another great video. Cheers, Brett.
Thank you!
Wow! What an art piece. You have some amazing skills my friend!
Thank you brother
Very dramatic and beautiful table base. Coupled with superb video production. Great job; we're watching you become a Master right before our eyes! Thank you for the journey.
We live to learn
Beautiful, as always. Thanks for providing the inspiration to go and make something beautiful myself. You tell such compelling stories with these videos. They are at once peaceful and stirring. Well done, again!
Mission accomplished
Whoa. Leveled up! Simply stunning work. Incredible detail. Oxy/ace rig too! Cool. Mahalo for sharing! 🙂🐒
Thank you!!!
Beautiful work. I love the organic style of iron work that you have developed
Thank ye!
Amazing! I often wonder with larger projects like this, how much steel went into it, and what was the starting stock? Did you start with different thicknesses?
I've not got a power hammer at the moment, would take me ages :D ha
65lb steel base. Varying steel sizes.
Wow, you really out did yourself this time man. That's just an amazing piece.
Well thank you
Really beautiful. Love the detail. Fantastic job!!!
Thanks K!
When I saw the first picture, I knew it would be a ton of work. It’s absolutely amazing. Great work good sir.
Thank you very much brother
That's a piece of art my friend, well done it looks beautiful, particularly liked the texturing with the press, great process 👌
Thank you sir
Great project. It is beautiful in the way nature intended a tree to be. Thanks for sharing cap’n. God Bless.
Thank ye
Thanks for the video Brett. That looked like an organic build ( pun intended ) Did you have an idea on what you wanted? But changesd the design on the fly. Excellent results. Keep safe and stay well.
A few chats back and forth with the client, ending with that rough sketch shown. Nothing too detailed
Great work! Your solution to get maximum visual weight with minimal physical weight in the trunk was excellent. Wonderful video, as always. I appreciate that you match the tone of your videos to the project instead of taking the easy way and editing them all the same.
Thank you very much Jacob!
It never fails to amaze me that you can get such organic shapes from steel bar stock. Really exquisite piece here. Hope you can get some shots with the slab top installed. Thanks for sharing!
I love turning such non organic material into something far from stock
Looked amazing, I couldn't picture it at first but became really clear after every branch addad
Thanks Rob!
Very very nice! How many hours do you think this took? A lot, I'd imagine!
40~ hours
At first I was a little bummed that there was no pirate themed story... And then the craftsmanship took over, and boy oh boy I was not disappointed! You made crating an organic shape so easy... But we all know how hard it is!
Thank you!
Elegant, beautiful and powerful. Another one smashed out of the park!
Woohoooo!
My only criticism is that I can't find anything to criticise!! Beautiful work.
Well good
Captn’ the crew is was worried there be witchcraft afoot. But now ya quelled the rumbling in the hold. They see they are crewn’ with a real sea dog. Bravo captn’!
Thank you brother!
Amazing job, Brett! Beautiful result! :)
Thank you!
I don’t know what to say… this sir, is an amazing piece of art. Respect. Cheers, your mate Jay.
Cheers Jay
Absolutely beautiful ! THANK YOU
No, thank YOU
Good to see you back, Cap'n! Beautiful work as always. I love your cinematography and camera work, it's every bit as creative as your art pieces.
Thank you!
First
You win
I like your process, you make some beautiful things
Thank you very much
Full points sir, not only was the finished piece fabulous the video and music are great too.
Well thank you!
Very cool build, I saw the pictures you posted. How much does that table weigh?
Base is probably 75~ lbs, but will eventually hold a 250lb slab
You are an amazing maker/fabricator keep up the beautiful work that you do
Thank you!
Amazing and creative work as usual Brett. Keep it up!
Hooray
Amazing work! It has to feel really good completing a piece like that. The video is great on top of that too. Keep killing it!
Thank you!
It reminds me of one of the sculptures from from Bettlejucie. The ones that come to life toward the end of the moive. Expect this one is a functional piece of furniture.
I’ll take that for sure!
Wow, you're getting better and better with every project Brett! Great job on this table base!
Thank you!
Amazing piece! I loved the video too! I hope you can share a final picture with the real slab on it
Hopefully soon, it’s on its way
Increíbles trabajos, deberías tener millones de subscritores. Felicitaciones Brett, no me pierdo un video tuyo. Saludos.
Gracias!!!
It is a beautiful piece and I really enjoyed feeling the love and care you put into every part of the process ❤️
Hooray!
Beautiful 👍👍👍. Thanks for sharing.
Thanks!
I had seen some pictures and wondered how you did it. Glad it popped up.
Woot
Awesome work ! Could you please tell me the exact name and brand of that flame metal heater ? Thank you
Honestly not sure. It was rented
Who knew watching metal take shape could be so relaxing? I absolutely love this piece. It is really great to see how the organic forms that look light on the one side can take the weight of the table, similar to the amazing strength of those forms in nature.
My thoughts exactly
This has to be in my opinion, the best video both in content and editing that Brett has ever done , would love to see the fully finished table.
I’ll let him know ; )
Cool project. The branches looks realistic
Good deal
Beautiful job Brett, keep em coming!
Thank you sir
Great to see you back with another video! great job!
Thank ye
Excellent work! Looking forward to seeing it come together with the final top.
Hopefully soon! It’s on its way
Mate that looks sick I love watching the way you work a true craftsman 👌🏻
Thanks Dave!
wow just wow wonderful and amazing job 👏 😍
Thank you!
Jeez that thing is epic! Incredible job
Thank you sir
At first i was like nope I can’t see a table but it turned out amazing.
Gotta see the sculpture in the stock 🖤
That looks great man!! amazing job sir!
Thanks!
That is such a beautiful and well crafted piece.
Thank you!
Blown away by the absolute beauty of it, stunning
Thank you Brian!

Wow. That turned out amazing!
Well thank you
The texture you put in to the steel is just awesome 🔨👍😊
Thanks brother
Awesome video, beautiful build as well 🍻
Thanks brother
I’m just going to say it. You don’t post enough videos. I mean that in the nicest way possible! You are an artist, I love your work, I want more! Having said all that, I can wait. Amazing things are worth waiting for!
I wish I could, in the nicest way possible, youtube doesn’t support enough financially and I have to work to cover responsibilities. I love sharing the projects when I get them, but priorities and all that 🤷🏼♂️
@@skullandspade completely understand. Just really enjoy your work.
Brett, that is astonishing! Well done!
Thank you!
Beautiful Work My Friend!
Thanks Steve!
I love the black finish 👌🏻
Thank ye
So... that was spectacular. Well done!
Thank you very much sir
So cool! I hope we get to see the final piece once it arrives in Alaska.
Heck yeah. Me too?
