Thinking about buying a US Military surplus Humvee?
    gear-report.com/what-does-a-s...
This video shows the condition our 2nd Hummer was in when we purchased it from the USMC, as well as some highlights of repairs and upgrades required to get it running and roadworthy.
Correction: video states 12k axles. I believe they are actually 10,300 Lb axels.
We took a big risk and bought a non-running HMMWV for sale at Govplanet.com
Getting it running was a bigger challenge than we had hoped. But we worked hard to resurrect and upgrade this beast... and saved a TON of money in the process.

Had the glass delamination issue with my Snatch land rover, on mine it was the binding agent between the glass and the perspex that clouded up. After taking the perspex off and letting the binding agent sit for a while it cleared up.

I have seen a few people solve this by removing the outer layers. I am hesitant to do this since the outer layers contain the shattered bits of glass in an accident or incident. I really don't want little glass fragments going everywhere.

@@GearreportdotCom I worked at Hummer R and D in livonia Michigan and when they were upgrading the old m998 base hummers, and putting armor plating on the bodies, they found out their calculations were dead wrong and that the 998 suspension was not going to hold up to 10,000 lbs of extra weight. They blew out quite a few 998 suspensions before they figured out they had to upgrade the suspension too. Unfortunately 100's of the upgraded 998's were already shipped out because the army needed them badly and of course the 998 suspensions blew out in the field under the pressure of the weight, lol, and we had to ship the upgraded suspension parts to where they needed them. It was major AM GENERAL screw up that cost a lot of money to AM GENERAL, and they never got those cost back. They had to eat that extra cost.

@@GearreportdotComYou are correct, i should have mentioned the loss of life, but was more concentrated on the original post about suspension failure of such heavy vehicles, that's all. No do not get wrong brother, the loss of life when equipment fails is so much greater than anything else, and i being a retired vet myself knows this all to well with seeing friends lost to equipment failures. That is something that is something that is of greater importance when designing anything, it needs to keep people safe. The neglect on Amg designers did cost lives, many lives, unfortunately that issue was never considered when the redesign came up and there was no acknowledgement by the company for those losses of life. i just didn;t address that issue with it because pretty much everybody knows what happens when people safety is not considered first and foremost when designing something.

History should not be sent to the junkyard crusher unless it has absolutely lived out it usefulness.

Very cool project. Back in the 90's I saw one of these ex military humvees on the road here in Australia. It was LHD (Australia is RHD), had US plates on it and was being used to tour the world according to the map painted on the side of it. There were brand new civilian spec vehicles available here for a short time but were horrendously expensive and were way too big. I believe the Queensland Prison Service used them as perimeter patrol vehicles but they were not very reliable and didn't last too long. But anyway that's a real cool truck.

I've had this one up past 80mph on the interstate to keep up with traffic and it did great. BUT this truck was barely used and appeared to have never been abused offroad.
Most HMMWVs I wouldn't think of going that fast until all of the steering, suspension and brake components were checked and likely replaced. Any slop in those systems will cause big issues when you get going that fast.
      96mph. Beats me.
I've never looked into getting one that fast, as I don't see the point. They aren't designed for that.

IF you get a HMMWV up to 86 MPH it will feel like you’re entering the Earth’s atmosphere! They are not made to go that fast. I got one up to about 80 when I was stationed in Germany.

That was water in the oil pan? How long did that sit for?
I am assuming that it didn't run or start in the auction. Was that pretty risky feeling? Looking at some postal trucks on Govplanet. Some don't start and some don't have keys. So kind of wonder if it's a simple fix or if there is something seriously wrong with it.

    • @jeffcress2413

It is always a risk, even if it runs. Just assume it will need an engine and transmission. If it doesn’t, then you win.

@@GearreportdotCom The auction to get the van I want is like a 1,000 miles away so if I win then I am trying to prepare for the worst possible outcome. Thinking of getting it towed to a nearby Walmart getting a part, changing all the fluids, filters and trying to start or just taking it to a shop for inspection and hoping they don't say, oh the engine is blown or transmission is shot.

I really wish some company would make a "no frills" type of vehicle in modern times... like what a jeep was when a jeep was a jeep. So many regulations... government has to take care of everybody but ironically usually military/government vehicles avoid all those regulations and take advantage of the no frills.

I get your desire, but even lowly HMMWVs meet almost all of the civilian Federal Motor Vehicle Safety Standards. There are a few exceptions for mission requirements, like no air bags or reverse lights. :)
