  • Great dressage braids can add a level of polish to a winning dressage test, while messy, loose braids can be a distraction from an otherwise great ride. But braiding is hard, especially for beginners! So we asked one of the Team SmartPak barns to help us out. In this video, Sarah Perry - a favorite of Team SmartPak Grand Prix dressage rider and trainer, Shannon Dueck - will show you how to braid a horse’s mane for the dressage ring. She also gives some braiding tips and tricks that she’s learned along the way to help you get the best possible braids when you do it yourself.

Yes, they say horse Tail & Mane braiding is a profitable business, but I was thinking about getting kicked while at the tail

My question is how do you get the braids out?

because the end isnt knotted you can gently pull the end the of the braid away from the hair and then undo the bands and you should end up with a long piece of thread

You get a seam ripper, which is sharp, and rip them out

Very good video on dressage braids. This is similar to how I do mine but as far as I can tell, SmartPak doesn’t sell waxed thread!

That's what I do, it's messy but it usually sits. Just braid then wrap it around itself into shape 😂 stick a rubber band in to hold it. Many wisps though

Same. My version of a braid is plait, then wrap it around itself into shape 😂

They look beautiful. I wonder if it works with a long natural mane. Don't want to cut it. Tried various other methods that all look messy.

I wouldn't Do The Braids So Tight Tho. I've Braided A Horses Mane And Forelock Before I would Leave It A Little loose so it won't give the horse a headache

A horse can get a headache too just like humans. So I would make sure the braids aren't too tight mabey have them a little bit looser so the horse doesn't get a headache and the horse would find that more comfortable when it's a little looser. Not trying to be mean but it would help the horse out too, the horses Mane And Forelock I've Braided Before He is A Gypsy si get sweats A lot and my mom and I make sure his braids are loose so he won't get a headache.
