I love how every member of the Corridor Crew has their own subtle genius that makes the Corridor Crew World a place we all want to be.
I really enjoy that this year we are getting to see more of the team doing their thing and working in different combinations. Everyone getting a bit of the spotlight as they are comfortable.
@@Firegen1 I fully agree! Everyone there shines in a different way and they are excellent at nurturing those talents.
But not all of us can be.
It's why I won't ever be able to work for them.

I work in compositing at Sony Imageworks on Spider-Verse 2 and I can say that you guys are definitely onto something! Can't wait for you guys to see the movie when we're done with overtime hahaha!
Hahaha get back to work
That was a joke, take a nap I reckon.
...You getting enough sleep? Like has there been crunch on working.
@@brandonnguyen6718 Crunch time is ramping up for light/comp as we speak. So it's not sooo bad and Imageworks has been really chill by giving us our christmas holidays even though we have tight deadlines.
@@dvd-pro Ah okay.
The fact that this actually happens in across the spiderverse. They nailed it
yeah i watched it a few weeks ago exactly like it
Live action characters in spider verse stay live action but it’s still amazing
It's fun to see a Dean-led episode. I definitely would love to see more episodes exploring other creative styles
for real, he killed it!
@Adam Cook He did! It gave a different energy. Just like a Wren/Nico/Peter/Sam/Jake/Jordan and so on has a different vibe.
While this shot specifically took a week of work, I would love to know how long he had been working on the tooling and techniques. This feels like a lot of work condensed down. I will definitely be watching out for more videos like this, but I would not want increased cadence if it means reduced quality.
As an artist, AI scares me but what corridor is doing is so dope and also they credit everything which is a plus! Loved the video
AI has been used a lot recently in the movie industry it would appear.
However, it seems that AI is being used as a separate tool for a lot of these artists. It's not the solution, it provides a foundation that allows a skilled artist to really bring out details and a certain look/design that can be impactful and interesting.
I am also talking out of my ass but this is what I had in mind when hearing how AI has become intertwined with creating art.
AI scares you becasue you are ignorant of how it works and it's applications.
Grow a brain, please.
@@irvin5294 You are 100% right. Corridor literally made this point at the end of the video as well.
@@evolicious i use ai..... corridor uses it as a tool. others use it to steal
@@irvin5294 totally agree. love how theyre using it as a tool
The animation and clip was SOO GOOD
I can actually imagine seeing it in the actual movie
no
It’s so funny how he says they did nothing. The amount of content packed into each frame of the short is incredible! He could have just posted a few ai generated scenes and we’d watch, but ofc corridor goes above and beyond to give us premium content for no cost at all. Yall deserve EVERYTHING
Fr, the Corridor Crew are always blowing our minds
Without the AI, they would have still produced a cool video. But using the AI as a tool, artistically supercharged it to a whole new level.
@@Soul-Burn It could still be done without the AI they'd just need to hire a talented 2d artist to draw out what the AI generated so it would just take forever and be hella expensive since good commission work isn't cheap.
Man, these guys are modern day mad scientists and artists as well. I've never thought that its possible to create such magnificent animation with only 4-5people.
Technically, they are amateurs utilizing tools made by mad scientists. There are tons of single individual artists using these tools to create even better results. The difference is that CD works in very short time-frames to push out videos for their youtube channel.
@@evolicious did you not hear niko say that this is likely the best use utilization of this method that anyone has ever made, ever?
@@ayezz2811 that's pretty subjective
@@therealOXOC subjective or not, you don’t enter that conversation by just using other people’s stuff. Otherwise everyone is in. I didn’t think I’d have to explain that but hey it’s the internet there’s always someone who doesn’t get it
@@ayezz2811 Hardly
I love how Corridor really shows how AI can be used as a tool for artists rather than something that replaces them. As a digital artist myself AI art is a scary concept, but these videos really show that AI can be used to help boost so many creative minds to make something truly spectacular if used properly and with respect to other artists.
Ai is tool it make what in the past need 100 people now enough with s few people. Use it don't be afraid of it.
Exactly this. As long as credit is given and permission asked to take source material to train the ai, it can become a new medium to explore more and better techniques to create art. After all, without human input the machine cannot do a lot to create something
@@PDD555I don’t see why permission is needed. Humans can use any art they want to train themselves art so I don’t see why ai should be different
@@dukydevil2542 permission is needed because when you are selling something that someone else made without permission that is called plagiarism. Same reason you can’t steal music and sell it as your own. Fair use laws are pretty elaborate, I’m sure they will encompass AI eventually. It’s muddy water for sure.
@@dukydevil2542 re-read that first sentence and re-examine the problem people have with it
This is probably the first time I've been terrified and excited about this kind of tech. I'm so used to this looking so janky that it'd never be used for any commercial project, but he hit the nail on the head, I got "lost in the sauce" and completely immersed and forgot this was AI assisted. You guys really put a lot of grit and hard work into this. It's actually to the point I can see a big budget film or studio put out a finished product using this.
Thank you for being so clear about how the various AI software you're using is a TOOL, and NOT a replacement for artistry itself. Having this conversation is so important to the future of the industry.

Spider-verse was one of those movies that you could tell was made with love, not just with money. Everything Corridor Crew makes is made with love too, and it really makes a difference. You made a career out of goofing around with your buddies, and you throw your whole hearts and souls into it! So good!
@Repent and believe in Jesus Christ why?
I really appreciate how the Crew acknowledges concerns about AI involving art. It helps bring awareness to concerns artists (and sometimes I) have about being able to create someone’s style.
It’s very comforting to know they are aware of different pieces of a large concept.
I’m afraid of being replaced
@@darthdarth4297 won't happen at least not for a very, very long time. AI and computers in general can only work with the data they're given. They can't create something from nothing. Even the AI art programs that give us things we've never seen before and "original" art still have to work with examples of art it has been fed. The reason why it looks original to us is because of how large the data base is.
Point is, even the most sophisticated AI needs human input and therefore, artists.
@@darthdarth4297 same.
If you want to see the other side of the argument check out Steven Zapata's "The End of Art: An Argument Against Image AIs" on UA-cam.
short sighted justification imo. you avoid the cost of r&d for style, whether that be an individuals (often, life) effort, or that of a team, and you cannot rely on the morality of consumers to "fix" the problems inherent to capitalism. attribution is a cozy fuzzy cherry on top, but proper compensation (see: cash) is probably preferred
On the Established Titles ad-read, in approximate order: no one becomes an actual lord, there is no 'historic Scottish custom' which makes landowners lairds/lords/ladies, there is no ownership of any plots of land transferred since it's a 'souvenir plot' rather than a legally transferrable plot of land, no one can 'legally' be a lord from an ET purchase because (again) there is no land transfer nor Scottish custom to bestow the title.
They're not quite the scam some claim, but there's also misinformation in their releases.
Basically what OompaTV said but yeah.
The loophole they are exploiting that lets you call yourself a lord if you give them money is (drum roll)... You can call yourself whatever you like the vast majority of the time anyway. You don't need to give them money to do so.
Seriously, stop randomly giving money to this company. Give money to charity and print your own certificate saying you give them permission to call themselves a lord. This is only marginally less dumb than the 'make Kanye a billionaire again' donations page.
@@agsystems8220 Because they've used the words 'legally' and 'officially' and allowed past ad reads to specify that you can use Lord/Lady on any official document, their loophole could violate prima facie - basically anything you'd present to a bank or government agency as proof of identity can't have a title on it that's not yours, because that runs the risk of adjusting legal reception.
So even that loophole just doesn't work.
Its kinda scary how with the right direction you can make a few shots just as good as the shots that toot years to make. Your work looks so frikin beautiful.
*toot*
toot
But without the shots that took years to make this wouldn't have been possible in the first place, AI can only imitate what has already been created. Don't get me wrong though, I'm not saying this to diminish Dean and Fenner's work, they absolutely used those tools in a really smart and creative way.
toot
Yeah, but remember. That was only possible because some dude spent a lot of time training the AI model AND because the original source was actually made. Without either of those, this amazing piece would not be able to exist.
I laughed so loudly when the intro for the Justice League Animated show started playing. I grew up on that. I loved having a Dean episode, he is my people and he always has such interesting ideas. The whole concept of this short they made was so good and it turned out so well, I'm absolutely in awe of what Dean and Fenner managed to pull off
I'm not sure if I get that joke.

I really appreciate the differentiation of using AI completely vs using it to expand the creative process. As a musician, I've always been afraid that AI will cause a rift in how I produce my work. This makes a valid point on how instead of being afraid of this technology replacing me, I should embrace it to make my own work better.

This is the definition of using AI as a tool and not a crutch. The process that you guys used for this could be great for things like High Fidelity Storyboarding
I could easily rewatch the entire Spiderman series, or even any of the Avengers movies with this rework.
Absolutely stunning. You guys have, once again, completely changed the field.
Oh my god, if they did a fan made remake of all the MCU films with this style, it would be a crazy masterpiece.
We’ve been working on this for some time now, the idea is to create a rotoscope animation look without rotoscoping. Same approach as here, punch in on detail then assemble in pieces. We’ve been using AnimeGan for stability, as the seed is always the same.

Concerning EbSynth 2, I will share a technique I made experiences with that give very interesting results for the kind of thing you were doing in this video :
Instead of using the final image of the stylized modified frame as a key image, I make a “difference” key image that I process through ebsynth then apply the result on top of the original footage as a layer with “Linear light” blending mode in after effects. The “difference” image is obtained by putting the original footage image on top of the modified image with colors inverted with 50% layer opacity. It gives you an image that will be 50% gray where there is no difference between the two images, lighter values where the modified image is lighter than the original, and darker values where the modified image is darker. By applying this “difference” image layer on top of the original with “linear light” blending mode, the result becomes exactly the modified image. It works the other way around as well : if you invert the colors of the “difference” image and put it on top of the modified image with the same blending mode, you will obtain the original image.
Using these “difference” images as key images for ebsynth has several advantages :
- It will not process parts of the image that haven’t been changed from the original;
- you don’t have to do heavy rotoscoping to compose it with the original footage, because it will only affect the parts of the image that you chose to modify;
- as it is a “difference” image applied on the original, changes in lighting on the original will be kept on the final result;
- most of the parts of the image that ebsynth have trouble with to process will end up more or less blurred out to as a medium gray that, with the “linear light” blending mode, will leave less visible artefacts where ebsynth screwed up;
- you can cumulate difference layers on top of each other (if the modified areas overlap, it’s a little finicky though).
There is of course the same kind of limitations that you will have from any other ebsynth image processing, and you will still have to pick your key frames wisely, but I find that this technique allows me to use much less key images than with the usual technique. But your mileage may vary, it depends a lot on your source footage and what kind of modification, stylisation you are trying to do.
A final tip with using this technique : process your “difference” footage a first time, then apply it on top of your source footage but with inverted colors. Export the result to use it as the source video frames for a second pass in ebsynth, keeping the same key “difference” frames than the first time. Then update the “difference” footage on top of your original, but without the colors inverted. What it does is that this first pass creates sort of an “enhanced” reference footage that will easier for ebsynth to tell what goes where.
There are lots of vfx possibilities with this technique, so have fun with it, do some experiments.
Sounds interesting, can you make a tutorial video?

Stuff like this really makes me question going into animation as a profession… sometimes even to the point of asking why to keep going.
I fear that Pandora’s box has nudged open
Change doesn't mean that the profession is going away. It only means you have another resource at your disposal that will improve productivity and probably allow for things we never though possible. But you need to embrace it, and if that field is one you want to get into, then maybe you need to get really good at working with ai. Embrace it, if you get really good at it, there's value in your work.

Wow I think Corridor just leveled up. They've always done excellent work but that was absolutely professional, big budget movie quality.
I think we might see Corridor doing big time projects before to long.
the reason they animated different aspects in twos and ones is mainly so that while miles is still getting to grips with his powers, he's a bit clunky, and is on twos, but then once he's fully become the new spiderman he's more in sync with how everything works and is animated on ones to show that newfound smoothness and fluidity.
Yeah! I was going to say that!
Yeah we learned that in animators react!
For the action scenes yes, but also in general a lot more stuff was on twos or held on still frames to replicate a hand drawn style overall. Like peter B eating a burger was also on twos

It's so refreshing to see this sort of content online. Humans aren't all bad.
I hope that vfx and animation studios are taking notes from this. Even if they don’t directly use this process, it shows that a process exists. And theoretically, a studio could spend more time refining the process and doing it even better! This is incredible stuff! Well done, Dean and Fenner
To be fair if Corridor is doing it with open source tools on a couple of PCs over a week, then the big boys are probably already buying whole server farms on Monday to run proprietary versions of these tools, but we wont see them for another 3 years because the projects are so big.
It's crazy how close this stuff is to actually being useful for a true production. I understand that lots of different AI is used already, but as they brought out in the video, this is on a whole other level.

AI isn't nearly the same as "taking inspiration" from artists you love.
Taking inspiration means some stuff in what you saw moved you. It may be the colors, the line art... your feelings towards the artist's work will make you focus on some aspects in particular, that will be reinterpreted by your brain and reused by you. AI is a cold, full-on replicate of other artists' style, without their consent, and without taking into account what's making you feel things when you see it.
Spiderverse isn't just a "look", it isn't just a style... It's a culmination of hundred of peoples' work, passion, talent, craftsmanship... that's what makes it special, not just some chromatic aberration and lines on the face. That's what I liked about your works too. If anytime you work with AI you feel like you have to put a moral disclaimer, maybe that's the sign you're doing something really wrong. As a big fan of Spiderverse myself and an artist like you guys, I cannot fathom how you don't feel ashamed of doing something like this. This is so disrespectful.
Don't get me wrong : AI, machine learning in creative spaces are fascinating. It's gonna open so many doors... But promoting and using it only to replicate other's works for the gist of it is really messed up. The second studios can fire hundred of artists to replace them with a small team and AI, they're gonna do it. Treating AI like a fun toy feels like watching kids play with Uranium and promoting it on their youtube channel.
I really don't like the direction Corridor Digital is taking lately. You guys are playing with fire and are putting the last nail on the coffin of crafstmanship against profit-motivated studios.
Well said!
honestly I don't think this comes down to morality. while your absolutely correct that the creation of the original film took hours and hours of dedicated work and craftmanship I think it's hard to deny the work and skill it took for them to this not just the guys in the video but the people who made these programmes etc. while it is not the same craftsmanship that was used to create the original it's still a form of craftmanship in and of its self.
also to me this is a derivative work more a kin to fan fiction than being it's own original work. it not aiming to make something new using a similar art style like entergalactic is. it is a derivative work looking to replicate and expand on the original much like fanfic does. while an author/creator of a piece of media has thousands of staff and hundreds of hours making a piece of media. fan fiction is created by a person who spends a fraction of the time or resources on it to show their appreciation of that work. it is not aiming to detract from the original work nor can it as a understanding and enjoyment of the original is what makes this work.
lastly I think ultimately the problem of studios firing artists in favour of AI has nothing to do with them and everything to do with those studio prioritising proft over artistic integrity so I think you blame here is entirely misplaced while yes alerting studios that this technology exists will have an effect you would naive not to think that studios weren't already looking into this long before and a channel on UA-cam making fan content isn't going to change that.
I'm not 100% defending them and I do agree with a lot of your point I just think they lack a touch of nuance.
and it looking at my own arguments they are definitely lacking its own nuance as well. my arguments definitely have their own flaws so honestly idk
What's wrong with replicating someone's style? As you said, any piece is not just a "look". Imitation is not a copy
I'm not sure if anyone noticed but during Dean's conversation with Nico (around 13:10) the picture in frame is constantly changing... small detail but really well done guys!
The trailer looks so good it almost felt real.
damn, I didn't expect it to be so long and well made. Love it
Can you say that again? I didn't hear you.
It's a fkn filter.... well made?? Keep smoking that meth dude..
This is actually insane. It looks great and the creative twist you guys put on it was awesome.
I'm not exactly sure how these tools work but if it's possible you may want to look at tracking the noise pattern to the character using EBSynth, then running stable diffusion on the resulting video. I imagine that stable diffusion would result in less visible artifacting, since the source noise isn't changing so drastically per frame. May not be possible but something to consider. I can't wait for these tools to be pushed that one extra step, it already looks amazing!
Stable Diffusion isn't great at keeping consistent details just yet; it's more a broad brush than a pen atm. Something like the spiderweb pattern on Pete's suit would be extremely difficult to replicate consistently across different generations, even when using a source image; there's always a slight change in shape/direction/thickness. But honestly with how fast the tech is moving, I'd expect to see near-perfect generative replications in another 2 years, max.
Respect to the thought process put into creating this piece. Thumbs up for the whole team and honour to Fenner and Dean
The animation and edit was SOO GOOD
I can actually imagine seeing it in the actual movie
The fact that two people can make something like this is insane! There's no doubt in my mind that this will be the future of film! who knows if that's a good thing. Imagine future art directors creating AI training packs for films. Really cool guys!
As good as the final product is, it still feels wrong in some way. Yes, there is some work that goes into making this project - as stated in the video. But it is still putting frames and videos into an AI generator, and spitting out something that took a whole group of animators four years to make and perfect by hand. All that is left is small filming shots, cropping and editing. Things you guys do on an everyday bases. That isn't me brushing off the work you guys did do, but that is me saying that we are well passed the point of calling AI generators a 'tool' rather than a complete replacement.
exactly. I really think theyre being irresponsible with how they are opening this pandoras box. Their intentions are in the right place but they are kidding themselves if they dont see the ethical issues AI creates.
@@kullundee Right? I would believe they would be smart enough to see the issue - seeing them themselves are artists and content creators. They sit there and say that "as long as you say you're inspired," but you're dealing with a computer system that doesn't understand that, and a billion people on this Earth who will more than likely not give a shit about anyone else like you do. This whole thing with AI generators was okay when it was for simple goofs and gags, but now you have companies whose main goals are to completely wipe out the art industry and utilize generators. I just wish Corridor could actually speak the truth, rather than sweep it under the rug and tell us that it's all fine like they have been.
I love Dean coming into his own hosting this one. Amazing work team!
The thing is, hand-drawn animation will never go out of style. The amount of creativity in movement and design allotted through something hand-drawn is irreplaceable. As long as your source for the animation is real footage, the final product is going to feel too realistic and it's going to lose its magic.
True, but will hand drawn animation sell if people can just mimic it and output more than a studio like mappa, madhouse e.t.c?
@@samuelkibunda6960 Animation ai, 3d models ai exists already, i think i even heard about ai codind software, the question until where the ai can go, we have to wait some years but maybe some people should think about retraining
@@Alex254561 I'm honestly wondering if the Ai community does not self regulate (there's a very concerning lack of ethics there) governments will regulate the entire community to the ground if a law maker learns that it's easy to create a fake video, image, audio that is indistinguishable from real life there's going to be fear and concern from the general public!
@@samuelkibunda6960 The Japanese industry has pretty much been carrying this tradition of high quality, hand-drawn animation. Well-known western animation studios nowadays heavily rely on computer-generated animation for feature-length films and projects. Many Japanese animation studios have an unhealthy rate of output, but even with the rise of worker unions and international feedback, their work ethic isn’t budging.
A.I. has and always will be simply a tool. The concept of mimicking art will always be seen as interesting and eyebrow-raising to the public, but will never hold the same regard as, say, original work from scratch.
That being said, mimicking art to this degree of quality still requires large amounts of work. There will always be more original creators than A.I. specialists.
tl;dr Hand drawn animation will still sell, though mostly carried by its appeal and the anime industry. It's more complicated to alter an original work to look like original work, rather than hire someone to create the original work themselves.
@@samuelkibunda6960 StableDiffusion also was trained by taking other people's artwork without the artists consent off of the internet which also has quite questionable morals!
This is beyond epic. And I’m so happy you included the 90s Spider-Man who started the whole spider verse concept
Have been seeing this ALL over tiktok. Really hope that y’all are getting credit for it because y’all are SO deserving of it. Corridor Crew TO THE MOON!
This is one of the best things you guys have done in a while... quite impressive use of the tech. Really cool.
This is one of your most impressive projects to date. That was awesome
Even though I'm a year late, I would REALLY really REALLY want a full movie of this! It looks SO GOOD
Dean is so awesome man, I love that he's getting to orchestrate a video like this that he's so passionate about
This is absolutely incredible work. You guys are really helping push this forward. It's so good to see artists advocating for the use of AI and showing what can be done
And what happens when AI gets more sophisticated and is as if not more efficient than artists?
@@ranzu3138 Serious questions need to be asked to anyone who's opinion is that this actually looks good.... GOZ SEEZ DER EYEZ DOCTERZ PEEPPERZ
it would be far more "incredible" had a computer not generated it
art is being trained without artists consent tho thats a major no no
This is like something that I would actually watch. Really cool and props to those guys who made it.
The one shot that stays with me is when Miles and Peter and running from That office and Miles throws a bagel at someone and the word "Bagel" appears when the bagel hits the person on the head. Even this far out anyone that knows me IRL knows that comedically shouting "BAGEL!" at any random time will get me laughing uncontrollably
