Outkast in 2003 they went from platinum selling artists to diamond selling artist with Speaker/Box and love below. Ludacris came out with stand up, Lil Jon has Get Low. David Banner - like a pimp. Chingy had Holidy In. T.I - 24's. Point being this is when the south started to pick up momentum. Once 2005 came it was all south side artist every where.
did yall know when outkast first came out , they got booed off the stage at the source award in 1996... they were yelling get yo country ass off the stage
I'm from BX, NY. I knew about Outkast, and Goodie Mob for a long long time. Recently I've moved to England and Cee-Lo Green was on the news. They were saying he was a new break out talent. Cee-Lo replyed "It took me 15 years to become of an overnight success".
"real hip hop" fans don't have appreciation for ignorant music. gucci is a legend, but these kinds of people can't get over the fact that gucci's subject matter isn't conscious
TBH, Post Biggie Bad Boy is the reason why Hip Hop is what it is today. At least in the mainstream. The shiny suit era, the materalism, the bragging. People don't want to admit it. But the decline started in 1997 with exactly them. The South acts namely No Limit and Cash Money just capitalized on it and took it to another level.
On one hand you've got Outkast, Scarface, UGK and many more. But then on the other hand you've got Gucci Mane, Waka Flocka etc. I think the good rappers I mentioned are HUGE influences on nearly all rappers. However, I feel like bad, "Trap" etc. is a big influence on other types of rap out of the south resulting in bad music. In conclusion, half of the south is respected.
I have a problem with bad rappers from all areas. North , South, East, and West. There are plenty of good southern artists in the game, just have to look past your local station in some instances.
Hip-hop purists have to understand that sometimes people just want to hit the club and have fun. Why can't hip-hop be diverse. Imagine if everything sounded like Raekwon or Talb Kweli. A lot of Southern music is good to dance/bounce your head too, nothing more nothing less. Right now while chillin' at the crib, that new Phonte is getting play. But Im not gone front like I don't like to get it crackin' at a party.
I grew up in Texas. I hate to say it but the dude that said the South was getting ready to explode with respected rappers that were lyrical but became derailed when No Limit and Cash Money came out is right. Truth hurts, but when you look back it, they were popular because of beats. Lyrically, majority of them sucked. Up until 1996, the South had balance. You had 69boyz but then you had Scarface. You had 95 South then you had Ball and G. Now, you have nothing but a bunch of Tag Teams.
The climate of country affects music. In the 90s there was fun southern music but it remained in that region like Kilo Ali and Raheem the Dream (unlike Gucci, Wacka, Roscoe Dash today). It was crack generation so the words of Biggie, Nas, Ice Cube, Ugk & Scarface made sense. Even in rock it was grunge.Fun music wasn’t as appreciated. In the times after 9/11 & mid-war, there was a trend to supporting this upbeat music, snap music.
REGULAR HIPHOP FANS AND EVERYDAY HIP HOP FANS LIKE MY SELF RESPECT THE SOUTH FOR THE FRESH FUTURISTIC CREATIVE SOUND THAT IT BROUGHT TO HIP HOP I CANT GET ENOUGH OF IT I LOVE IT........ BUT NEW YORK AND EAST COAST WILL NEVER RESPECT THE SOUTH NEVER NEW YORK EAST COAST ONLY RESPECTS EAST COAST. I AS A HIP HOP FAN WANT TO THANK GEORGIA AND MIAMI LOVE YOU FOR REAL. HIP HOP AND ESPECAILLY THE BEATS AND PRODUCTION TODAY IN HIPHOP IS AWESOME OUT OF THIS WORLD AWESOME THANKS TO THE SOUTH
jason listening the dont south even make true Hip Hop name the last time the south had a turntable in their instrumental??? Name the time the south had Graffiti in their videos??? Name a time where the south didnt downgrade black women???
Good point. Too much emphasis is placed upon how much money an artists makes. I never cared because it's not like the artist is going to give me any of it.
If Virginia is considered the south then lets not forget about the Clipse, Missy Elliot, Timberland and Magoo. They were pretty great. It sucks that people like Starlito and Don Trip probably won't get radio play but the South is underrated. All of Dungeon Family, David Banner, Three 6 Mafia,Lil Wyte,Young Jeezy, Jody Breeze, Ludacris (the lyrical version of him),Trick Daddy,Cyhi da Prince , Screwed Up Click, Z-Ro, Trae da Truth, Slim Thug,Ace Hood, Yelewolf,Slim Dunkin and Curren$y are all nice
I disagree with a lot of what the guy with the dreads was saying. In the 90's, the group Outkast were outcast. They were the "waka flaka's" of their day. Look it up. Russell Simmons said that Outkast were killing hip-hop and then he apologized later on. Now Outkast are looked at as legends. Longevity kills all criticism, history has shown. Great convo, though! Keep them up! I'll subscribe.
Good vid, I liked the guest too, get him on more videos! Got a suggestion for a new topic - do modern producers get enough credit? Back in the day everyone gave mad respect to Primo, J Dilla, Pete Rock, Large Professor, etc. Nowadays it doesn't seem like the average fan knows who produced a track. And since we can all agree that most popular rap isn't lyrical, it puts that much more emphasis on the production, especially in a club. I wonder how much Waka Flocka makes compared to Lex Luger.
@mykectown because the creative ones get overlooked just for being "dumb". people think soulja and waka are the same artists. when in reality one (soulja) just bites whatever style or sound is hot and makes tracks, whereas waka created a unique sound and style and people followed his trend. but no one looks at it that way.
im from Nashville, i think we, the southern hip hop region, did have some great and some awful rappers. Good - UGK Outkast T.I Scarface,J. Cole and we had bad ones Hot boys, Lil Wayne, Waka, Gucci. But i think we should be given more respect than what we get
One thing about Gucci/Waka that I don't feel is covered is that they give a whole new demographic a voice. They expose a new type of dialect to the the public. I just think that success comes with either emulation or true originality and the south is great at emulation of its own rappers. The problem is that after a while it's not enough. One can only take so many songs about "hoes."
I live in the south and dudes in the south dint listen to east coast hip hop, they fuck with the west but down here we support each other that's the difference
@TobiasxFunke This shit about "it's not conscious" is such a cop out. People always say that like they need some sort of rationalization for listening to mindless music. There's nothing wrong with that. If you like it, I love it. No one says that all music has to be conscious. But how about be creative? How about doing something new? If you wanna be ignorant, wonderful. But do it well. If you follow the show, I've said that many times over.
@coolnesss16 I agree. I get where Myke is coming from, but I don't understand why there can't be a place for the Flocka's and Gucci, clearly they have fans because people like there music and we know who they are. Neither of those rappers claim to be th best "lyricist" or hip-hop's second coming. They just doing what they do and people like it and they getting paid. The only problem, is Yes, they sort of dominate and thats not fair to the other types of rappers, but I think thats changing.
The progressive Southerners for whatever reason are not the ones that the media choose to display. They choose to display the most country backwards bumpkin types. So since that what everyone associates with the South, then everything in relation must be akin to that. Like Mike said, it's the radio's fault for perpetuating this, but it's also the rappers fault for everyone not taking a collective stand against ignorance, which can be said for any coast rap music comes from.
@bandicoot2ps1 oh yeah, i forgot about him and thats because i was talking about modern southern artist that is many influenced by southern pioneers that i mentioned. Jay Elect on the other hand was heavily influenced by many rappers outside of the south plus hes lived & honed his skills in other cities like philly, detroit and new york and that is very obvious when listening to his music so thats the reason i didnt instantly mention him, and yeah hes the truth!
i fuck with flocka man. he even admits himself that he is not a lyrical rapper. but he makes a song that makes you want to punch the first person you see. lol
In the 90's, people respected a lot of what Russell Simmons says. Even today people do. I think it's YOU who don't respect Russell Simmons. Hes done more for hip-hop than everyone who watched this video combined.
i think different parts of tha south had different styles. like memphis, bacc in tha day, they spit fast and WERE really lyrical and jus hard. like killer type songs. miami was more booty shaking. and GA was more playa style rap. then texas is more like slow, mixed with some west coast flavor. so i think tha south is tha most diverse, which is a good thing
(part 3) were inspired by & followed after the southern rappers that did care about good lyrics and being artful. You have Big Krit, Killer Mike, Alot of mcs from north carolina (excluding petey pablo), chamillionaire, z-ro, STS and cunninlyguists. Granted u have a few mainstream southern rappers that can rhyme and have substance in their music like ludacris (before battle of the sexes) and TI. All in all, based solely on the fore fathers of southern hip hop, it should be more respected.
They have to do something new. Most artists are afraid of re-inventing themselves in Hip Hop for fear of losing their fanbase/respect. I'm not really a Kanye fan, but even from the little bit of stuff I've heard from him I know that he's always trying to do so production-wise. I think it's a lot of what's made him successful. Hip Hop needs to support change more openly, imo. Oh, and Lil Wayne "profound?" Don't make me cry, please. LOL I just saw Feefo mouthing that shit to C-Town.
@chicagomycity I've been saying all along that I don't mind waka and gucci just that they're needs to be balance in the mainstream. People that want to ONLY listen to lyricist should just keep listening to independent artist.
I know so. They signed with Island records. Russell was the one who brought their songs to their attention and got Eric B and Rakim signed. Look it up.
In all reality Soulja is probably one of the most important artist inn rap history. Crazy I know. But and follow me now he got a record deal off of UA-cam and a dance he created, he actually went from nothing to something. He was the first "new age" self made artist and paved the way for any artist to get hot off of a social media following and not necessarily their beat or lyrics. Odd Future, Drake, the slew of one hit wonders, Audio Push, Mac Miller etc.all owe their careers to Soulja. He proved it was possible to make it without having a direct link to the music industry as long as there was a fan base to support you. BTW Lupe Fiasco is my favorite rapper
***** We can all hate on Soulja but you can't denigh Wayne had arguably the best run in rap ever. Now judge Wayne strictly during his time when he claimed to be the best rapper alive and I think you'll find it hard to really argue against his catalog (dedication 2- Carter 3) everything before or after is irrelevant because as far I'm concerned he stopped trying
The Cater 1 and 2 are underrated and sound nothing like the Carter 3. And all of Wayne's mixtapes during this period are all pretty great. Most notable the drought 3. Wayne was on a tare in which he was killing every verse he was on and had content (which he is lacking at the moment). Everybody not only but needed a Wayne feature because that was the only way to guarantee that your record would get spins, views, etc.
@yugang08 You make very solid points. Southern Hip-Hop i feel by now deserves it's due. There are some great artist that have come out of the south.. and even dance music (Waka, gucci, soulja)to me anyway has it's place. The problem is that it's dominated media and radio when it comes to Hip-Hop. Besides Young Money, Jay z, and kanye all I hear is them MOST basic form of Hip-Hop on radio stations. It's kind of obvious why socially concious rappers and spitters would be alienated by that.
it seemed like the south only had radio and club tracks. but with game dropping documentary and DA, also lupe dropping F&L, they were two dope albums which showed who the real rappers were
You guys always nail the best topics! I totally agree with Myke though, for me some of my favorite hip hop artists happen to be from the south (Geto Boys/Scarface, Outkast) but out side of a select few especially in recent years the south is hard to defend because like Myke said for the most part the south contributes nothing to the culture. To me hip hop done right is art it should move me and make me think, but the south has sadly come to represent everything wrong with hip hop now.
I hate it when niggaz use "gettin money" as a cop out for an artist being trash.. This is the rap game, not wall street. Idgaf about these rappers bank accounts. You could be a broke ass nigga but if ya music is good, i'm a fan.
Yes, that stuff is getting played in L.A. and N.Y. The south deserves respect, but they aren't equal participants. All places have contributors that really don't have much to contribute, but the way the southern rappers learned to make money is not one that's supported by the community at-large. Basically they were taught that cookie-cutter rap sells. I remember hearing song after song about strip clubs when the south was coming up. I just wish they'd switch-up more.
@PoomanHood Honestly, it may sound weird, but the fact that Waka admits he's not a good rapper is part of the reason I allow myself to enjoy his music. To me it means that I don't have to be concerned with people liking his stuff since it's not meant to be an example of the best hiphop has to offer. It's just bottom of the barrel pump up music. People might like it for a time, but they'll return to lyricism in due time. And it is slowly becoming popular to be lyrical again like Royce says.
I'm from the south. Born and raised, but if it ain't cunninlynguist, supastition/kam moye, strange fruit project, cyne, collective efforts , jay electronica, k-rino ect....It won't get no play from me.
yeah completely agree with you on outkast, they are one of my favourite groups ever, and suppose for radio play South were running things no doubt. T.I kept the south going for a good while! since hes gone they have lost there grip like you said. Bun B is keeping it alive down there in my opinion. For me though when game dropped documentary as his debut album that kind of eclipsed anything the south had put out that year, that was dope! But you never know an, maybe an outkast comeback? hope so!
Im not saying Waka is a good rapper, in fact hes one of the worst lyricists ive ever heard. but i still blast his songs with the windows down while rolling down the highway
Certain regions will give more credit to the South than others. looking at it as objectively as possible, most regions give respect to Outkast, Geto Boys, DJ Premier (who is from Texas). now, you have Cunninlynguists, H.O.J., J. Cole, Big K.R.I.T., Jay Electronica who tend to get critical praise from many regions. I think the artists that crossover the best to NYC are the ones that sound the most East Coast, like Jay Electronica. Myke got it right, the lack of balance is fucking things up.
I'm sayin', no salutes to Little Brother? Phonte > TI all day. I'm from NYC and I'm bangin' Charity Starts at Home harder than almost anything right now.
@BrothaAbstract damn, good call on strange fruit project! I tried to get someone to listen to it and wouldnt until i brought up the fact that symbolyc one/s1 is part of the group smh.
When's the last time Outkast or UGK had a new album? When you gotta go back 10 years for an artists newest shit, they are no longer representatives of the current south. I love the few all-time greats that have come from the south, and in all honesty, the sound that those good southern artists had was new, and unique, and they were doing something different, and the south still has the ability to create new artists with that same creativity and talent, but the south means nothing but crunk now.
Don't hate the player hate the game. It's not Gucci and waka"s fault why they are so popular in the south . The people are the one that keep perpetuating this bs. For the most part the fans empower the rappers to put this crap out. Until the fans wise up and think ; nothing will change.
the feefo / c-town wars continue.
they sure do, melon.
"You can be not so lyrical, and you can be Waka Flocka." 😂😂
Outkast, Scarface and the Geto Boys, 8Ball & MJG, Three 6, UGK, Goodie Mob, KRIT, K-Rino, Z-Ro, Killer Mike, Street Military, etc.
J.Cole and Young Jeezy.
Once 2005 came it was all south side artist every where.
did yall know when outkast first came out , they got booed off the stage at the source award in 1996... they were yelling get yo country ass off the stage
you might have a point on that on that
I'm from BX, NY.
StylistecS nah master P was doing it first
Waka Flocka is like Hood Rock music when you listen is just for getting amped and hype to.
When Myke started spitting Space Age Pimpin at the end I was weak as hell. .lmao
On one hand you've got Outkast, Scarface, UGK and many more. But then on the other hand you've got Gucci Mane, Waka Flocka etc. I think the good rappers I mentioned are HUGE influences on nearly all rappers. Did ya'll see Feefo mouthing "Lil Wayne Profound???" when dude was talking (18:34) that was hilarious
Hip-hop purists have to understand that sometimes people just want to hit the club and have fun. Why can't hip-hop be diverse. Imagine if everything sounded like Raekwon or Talb Kweli. I love that you can see Feefo mouthing "lil wayne, profound?" to beezy hahahah
You guys are on a major hot streak, you top last weeks video, and that was a classic too
I grew up in Texas. I hate to say it but the dude that said the South was getting ready to explode with respected rappers that were lyrical but became derailed when No Limit and Cash Money came out is right. The climate of country affects music. In the 90s there was fun southern music but it remained in that region like Kilo Ali and Raheem the Dream (unlike Gucci, Wacka, Roscoe Dash today). The south have very respected artist with legends like Outkast, UGK, Goodie Mob, Scarface but also with new comers like Big KRIT or Killer Mike.
Outkast, Goodie Mob, 8ball and MJG, UGK, Big Krit, T.I., Ludacris, Killer Mike, Z-Ro, Geto Boys...actual southern hip hop is the shit
C-Town! I agree with a lot of what you say! Please continue speaking your opinions in these videos. You speak for a lot of people!

What he said about Detroit cats is 100% true we have no bias as a whole when it comes to hiphop
Mystikal, T.I., Ludacris, Outkast, Goodie Mob, Scarface, Geto Boys, UGK, Little Brother, and Eightball and MJG

V.A. is North. Sorry.
People watched and loved Michael Jordan because of how good he played the game, not because of how much money he made.
im from the 615 as well, i agree we deserve more respect.

I always like hype and lyrical
Ludacris was only mentioned once but his punchlines were I think brilliant when first hearing them.
Good vid, I liked the guest too, get him on more videos!

@chicagomycity No one is anti club rap. There just needs to be a balance. The same shit gets old after a while.

@cesposito Well I did say everybody from NC. I love Phonte and that is the album I am banging the most right now
CunnunLynguists is probably the only group from the south that I still listen to.
I hate it when niggaz use "gettin money" as a cop out for an artist being trash.. This is the rap game, not wall street. Idgaf about these rappers bank accounts. You could be a broke ass nigga but if ya music is good, i'm a fan.
"he's from the south, but he's not stupid" great
What have you guys thought of those hip hop instrumentals Bad Bad Not Good recreated?
Yes, that stuff is getting played in L.A. and N.Y. The south deserves respect, but they aren't equal participants. All places have contributors that really don't have much to contribute, but the way the southern rappers learned to make money is not one that's supported by the community at-large. Basically they were taught that cookie-cutter rap sells. I remember hearing song after song about strip clubs when the south was coming up. I just wish they'd switch-up more.
@theneedledrop
Part of the reason why i still watch.
Yes C-Town! I agree with you mostly.
Yo please review either the new J-live "spta" or DTMD "Makin dollas". (by the way DTMD is from Maryland, kinda the south I guess... Mason Dixon line)
The South runs hip hop and been running hip hop for about 10 years. We losing our grip bout you have to respect us even if you don't like the music.
Kast, goodie mob, krit, tip, scarface probly a couple im leavin out. Thats a list of lyrica
And it is slowly becoming popular to be lyrical again like Royce says.
love too see you guys do something on uk hip hop
yo, was Feef dog on some green energy during this filming? His eyes look lower than usual.
@ChompingDiMystik took the words right outta my mouth.
But you never know an, maybe an outkast comeback? hope so!
The reason the south is killin right is because their unified. Beef is what killed the east coast rap. & I'm from NY.
NigelNorthSTAR that what killed the west coast too and new york is not the only one putting on for the east coast
14:35 "It's Waka Fucka..." Don't know if that was intentional but that was subtly hilarious
Im not saying Waka is a good rapper, in fact hes one of the worst lyricists ive ever heard. but i still blast his songs with the windows down while rolling down the highway
It was party music but it was still lyrical. Today it's simple but back then it was lyrical. Check the Cold Crush fresh, wild, fly.
I don't mind southern MC'S. But once again I'll say HIP-HOP NEEDS BALANCE.
if you want a good rapper from the south listen to T-Rock that guy is a BEAST on the mic :)
Should the South be respected is the question to me.
well if he said that in the 90s maybe people should be more careful of who they give their respect to
I'm from Detroit and at least in michigan lil john and the bad rappers from the south are played. But I haven't really heard any T.I. or outkast.
@BrothaAbstract damn, good call on strange fruit project! I tried to get someone to listen to it and wouldnt until i brought up the fact that symbolyc one/s1 is part of the group smh.
They didn't mention Childish Gambino, he's from Stone Mountain, GA
