For the price and perfomance as well as presentation you cannot go wrong with either. Both feel solid when holding and writing. Either one in a 4B on ampad yellow pad (100 count page) is such a pleasure. I use them strictly for writing. I also agree with you, between the Blackwing Matte, Hi-Uni and Mono 100, I prefer the Mono 100. But any of these pencils are of superlative quality and venerable choices for outstanding writing instruments.

So true - your dissection is spot on … but I don’t prefer the softer grades - but that’s what’s great about these two as there are many choices to the grade.

I have the Mitsubishi 9850 and Tombow Mono but not any of the ones you showed. Some of the cheap pencils that have pleasantly surprised me are the Indian pencils such as the Apsara Absolute and Platinums as well as the DOMS X1. I’ve only recently gotten into pencils but man is it a cool and relatively inexpensive hobby. I have about 12 different offerings now.

The Absolute is one of my favorites also … the Apsara line is really, really good stuff … I need to make some more reviews.

@@JSturr yes you do! I love pencil content but there isn’t much of it on UA-cam.

I agree! I recently purchased the Blackwings Matte and 602, and was underwhelmed, i felt like the DOMS Super Dark Karbon performed just as well. However, my favourite for sketching are Tombow mono 100. They are beautiful, sturdy and erase really well. DOMS is a good second, even though it doesn’t hold its tip for long
