Hi Harry. I loved your podcast with Lindsey the frugal crafter.
I stick with Faber Castell mostly.

    • @TheArtGearGuide
      @TheArtGearGuide  7 місяців тому +2

I completely get that, if you have a product that you use and love, there is no reason at all to move away from that. Actually I have a gorgeous Faber Castell product to review soon, so keep and eye out for that review.
Also thank you so much for the kind words about the podcast with Lindsay. I was so nervous given the wonderful artists Lindsay had already spoken to and then after me it was Lisa of Lachri which was even more daunting. But Lindsay ever the amazing wonderful professional she is, set everything at ease and I enjoyed it so much.

@TheArtGearGuide Those gals are both gems. Opening the heart to strangers is hard, but Lindsay has a fantastic community, and I'm sure many of us were moved by the challenges you faced and how you faced them head-on.
Thanks for sharing your life and lessons learned.

Thanks for the great review! I never use much in the way of H, so that would be wasting half the set for me. Love graphite art but hate that sheen. I've been playing with some matte pencils but haven't yet done a full piece with them.

    • @TheArtGearGuide
      @TheArtGearGuide  7 місяців тому +1

I know what you mean regarding the sheen, but I think of all the graphite sets I’ve tried the Mitsubishi don’t show a lot of sheen, there are definitely much worse out there. But if you want to use something to eradicate the sheen, it’s only your dark values you get the sheen, I review a sketch set by Conte and there are a couple pencils in that set brilliant for that job. bit.ly/2S7DGF5 follow the link and check out this set.

Hey I have this set of pencils!
I actually first saw these pencils first being used by a Japanese artist on UA-cam and I liked how they looked. They feel so smooth in my hand, especially after a while of using them, and sharpen amazingly. I occasionally used the 10H pencil for blocking out my sketches and use the F pencil for the "final" sketch. The graphite feels so smooth on the paper and goes down very well and not too dark.

Thank you so much for sharing your experience with the pencils and I agree with you completely. I really enjoyed using them and I am going to do a nice art piece with them soon. Thank you so much for your kind and generous comment and your support.

Harry, your work is breathtaking! That must have taken a very long time to create. Do you do a rough sketch of it first, or any type of planning? I audibly gasped when I saw it and paused the video so I could take in all of the value nuances. That review was wonderful, from the photography to your excellent presentation. You are hardly responsible for price fluctuations, and one hardly expects you to continually monitor the links you have posted in past reviews. If someone is interested in a product, they will look at the asking price and decide it it is affordable to them. Even for someone who does not do much pencil drawing (I do watercolors) your videos are educational about the general qualities of the product, and always teach me something. And kudos for not referring to graphite as "lead", which is so common now and incorrect.
Your interview with Lindsay was greatly appreciated. There must be at least two more of her cloned, to accomplish so much while remaining so cheerful, peppy and attractive. You and your viewers may also enjoy her interview with Marty Owens. To my embarrassment, I was not familiar with him until then, but he also has an excellent channel. Recently, he listed his top ten supplies and went into quite a bit of detail on the pencils.
What you and so many YT artists do touches the lives of so many. Blessings!

Hullo Harry, nice review. I have had the same set of graphite pencils for the last 10 years! I simply don’t create simple pencil drawings very often anymore. I enjoy watching your videos and seeing your opinions on products, thank you! I am quite confident in recommending your videos and product reviews. I found the drawing that you created truly inspirational! and I have a video to send to the next person who asks me about a pencil set to buy, thanks!

I've used Mitsubishi's 9850 and 9852ew pencils and absolutely love them for writing but I only use mechanical pencils for my drawing (line art) so it would be overkill for me to buy a hi-uni set as I don't shade but I imagine they would be the most beautiful pencils to own.

I completely understand what you mean and they are perhaps one of my favourite graphite sets. I have a few Tom Bow graphite pencils which are beautiful but I am trying to save so I can buy a full set and review them.

I love the Hi Uni's, I have 2b, 6b and 10b they are superb, I had bought these on Amazon years ago for a similar price than the Faber-Castell green ones.
For me, they are a bit better than the F-C ones.
I love to have these as woodless ones.
    I love the drawing :-).

Great review, and loved the podcast! I'm a Uni fan. Love their fineliners. I work primarily in graphite and pen. Hate the metallic shine of graphite. That would keep me from this set. I could see the shine in your swatches; esp the 10B. I'm now using the Faber Castel Matt Graphite for finished work in graphite as the shine is significantly reduced.

      Yuck.
      Take up sowing instead.
      You're being taught by lunatics.
Next you'll stupidily say to us you want to get rid of the pencil thingy.
How about you brush on your dark wax from now on.
You're just like the karate kid
You wax on and wax off.

I've had Hi-Uni graphite pencils for years. They're what I am using on my latest graphite pencil study whenever I pick on it. I only use 4 out of the entire set though. The rest that have been sitting in the tin over the years were donated very recently due to decluttering (22 degrees of pencils, in my opinion, is just not necessary anyway).

Personaly, I use Faber Castell TK9071 2mm leads loaded on TK4600/TK9400 lead holders. For the darkest values, I use 12B Pitt matt graphite,to avoid graphite shine and get the darkest black in the same time.

Great review Harry! I have wanted these pencils for ages and I think I'm going to go ahead and get them. I have the Faber Castell Pitt Matte pencils which I love...and also Staedtler Mars Lumograph which are my first love in graphite...been using them for over 40 years! As for graphite lightfastness I have some drawings that i did in 1976 and they don't really look faded..mind you for a lot of that time they've been in a drawer so maybe that matters a bit 😅

    • @TheArtGearGuide

They are gorgeous pencils and I think you’ll love them, but also, I mentioned to someone in the comments section the other day, if you have a graphite pencil you love and have been using for a long time, don’t feel obliged to change. If it isn’t broke, don’t fix it as they say.
I can’t tell you how much I love doing reviews and the feeling I get when someone buys a product I’ve reviewed and they came back to me with a comment confirming that my review was perfect and they love the product, is amazing. But at the same time I often worry I inadvertently push people to spend money unnecessarily, cause I don’t want that to happen either.
With regards to the lightfastness, I can remember when I spoke to the scientists at the ASTM facility and the Blue Wool people, they both spoke briefly about Watercolour Pencil and Graphite lightfastness and both were very vague on the issue. Mind you, I think keeping your art in a drawer, as I keep mine in a drawer, that will certainly help the lightfast maintain 😂😂😂
Thank you so much for your support and comment and I hope if you buy the pencils you love them, I’m sure you will.
