The Most Annoying Strategy? The Castle Drop
Вставка
- Опубліковано 30 вер 2024
- There are many strats that can be annoying in AoE2, but none quite like the Castle Drop. It's tricky to stop and when it works... everything starts to fall apart. In this game I take a look at a special player who is going YOLO at a high level.

22:06 "Even wheelbarrow came in right here" - Wheelbarrow was just researched to make those villagers walk a bit faster to their castle drop position.
I got hit with this strat literally yesterday 11
I was like "his eco is gonna suck, im fine"
And then "woah thats a big ball of conqs"
And then "gg"
Really happy this is here. I do watch some of the competitive stuff but i always find myself skipping through it, even hidden cup.
The stuff with a twist or spin are really what keeps me interested.
Twists or low elo players are a lot more fun to watch than expert ones to me.
Yea, the meta has become a little boring. Knights and archers, fully walled and then wait until one (team) snowballs. Maybe a drush and relics if it's an exciting game.
Or a 1 hour+ endless skirm-war as seen in hidden cup 4? 😁
Hard agree. With pro players, the meta is predictable and a bit boring. Low Elo Legends and the like give some unpredictably to the mix and make it worth watching.
Agreed. I don't much care for sweat. I like a dumb gimmick or a fun match more than perfect micro and meta build orders.
Me dropping two Castle in front of the AI and almost lost all villiger: Hey, I've seen this one!
I havent played AoE2 in over a decade. I'm going to go install DE and play spanish and castle drop everyone
It never works out that way
i've died sometimes to sicilian douche, in team games!
@@dragovern Do you like to play black forest?
@@SD-pi9co in fact sometimes yes, but i play all maps e.g. arena, socotra, islands, arabia
Do it
How do the conqs not hit a single vill at 26:35?? its crazy how inaccurate they are
Yeah something has been broken with gunpowder frequently on DE. Back in January it became completely broken, then was fixed for like a month, and has been broken since March I think. Safe to say this is not intended behavior.
Even Stormtroopers have better aim.
It's been my experience in general with Conquistadors... they absolutely suck at hitting or killing units. The only use is to make the enemy run.
you don't need to fear the guy who trained 1000 strategy once, but the guy who trained one strategy 1000 times
castle drop doesn't require any training, even 700 elo are doing it more than any other strategy
Whoop whoop T90 pumping vids like crazy!
About time! The infrequent content had me experiencing withdrawals.
@@merlball8520 you can follow him on twitch, where he usually streams tuesday, wednesday, friday saturdays...
yeah, but my internet is not quite good enough to watch streams
@@blarch2 You could watch the VODs? It's what I do usually cause I can't catch them live
Loving it
Not gonna lie. i like some of the other video styles a great deal.
But the Low ELO Legends will always hold a special place in my heart.
Never understood the hate against non meta plays.
I wouldn't call it hate. More like wanting to rip someone's heart out, feed it to ornlu, throw the rest of the body between T90 neutral-island ranges to rot. Hate? Nah.
This series first brought me to your channel and been loving it here since. Thrilled to see it return
How I found T90 was by googling how not to place farms and archery ranges. Taught me a lot even if I have been playing for decades.
11
Look up Low ELO legend, ClownWorld, for Korean Tower Rush, he is on like an 11 game win streak.
incredibly smart how he lured the archers out of the base so they can't sit under the tc to snipe the builders for the castle drop
tea just isnt some nobody, he is a man of focus, commitment, and sheer fucking will
Chill dude, it's just a game.
100% reason to remember the name!
*sips tea*
Let’s go! I do something like this in arena 🤣
I could listen to you commentate anything! Great analysis, so engaging, interesting, energetic! T90, you're great!
The most annoying strategy is Halb + Onager. It's like cheating.
very mico intensive though. and a couple bombard cannons can wreck havok....
AoE is tuned in a way that it's easy to harass but difficult to finish a player before Castle Age. An aggressive castle is one of the earliest valid ways of ending a game; the moment it's up, the opponent's eco suffers, their nearby production buildings become almost unuseable, and the only thing that can kill it is a ram push which has to be accompanied. You can survive a castle drop, but it almost always requires an expensive relocation of your base, a risky counter attack, or some other big play.
Here is a feature I wish they would create and add to the game: changes of line of sight by elevation: where you can’t see the other side of a hill unless you’re on it. Like line of sight extends if your on a hill and diminishes if your on flat ground or below a hill
+ stone walls limit visibility and half the pierce damage from archer
@@pierrebarrauddelagerie Yes.
Conqs are supposed to be really strong, but in reality they suck against anyone who micros even a little bit. They will miss 90% of their hits, which makes them kinda useless.
You kinda have to hit and run in melee range for them to be effective. They are great at raiding and they also crush infantry and cavalry because they can micro forever and does a lot of dmg. I think gunpowder units in general should hit a lot more often and ballistics should affect them, it is a little bit sad that you have to play conqs almost in melee range when they do have a long range.
@@knasttrast7168 Increasing the projectile speed would also help. Right now they are really useless in micro battles. I only make them in specific situations, like in teamgames when I'm fighting knights/paladins or when I'm feeling spicy and I decide to do a quick castle drop landing on islands with Spanish.
That and taking 8 damage a hit from elite skirms really hurts until you have a nice ball of conqs built up.
Content keeps coming the last few days.
And I love it! :)
Next Up: S-Tier Castle Drop with Sicilians
21:03 Sicilians are offended.
Thank you for making some youtube based content makes us feel like we're part of your community
I'm relatively new to aoe2. My friend got me into it, but has been playing it for years and is at a much higher level. He castle drops me every single game. Very nearly made me not get into the game at all. But then after the game when I ask him to go a little easier on me while I learn the game, he just says he's not so good at the game, so it's fine. Usually a good friend, but I don't like playing aoe2 against him.
Never played this game but I find it interesting. Random first question: why is there a pic of a dude when a castle is built?
Cant play a single match without this fkn strat getting played. Very obnoxious
I have a strategy where I find the idea of playing AoE2 really fun, but then I don't play.
NIIIIIIIICE. I only pick spanish too. im liking the fact there are other spanish lovers too. iSit and now this guy who is top 100. smh and ppl say they suck
Chinese should have extra gold cost for knights and the same additional gold cost applied to light cav: Historically they struggled to have access to horses. Theres many examples of this including them sending poeople to try and setup purchase agreements for horses with civilizations really far away.
Many ppl will tell you AoE is not necessarily about historical accuracy but the historical aspect was the major factor I fell in love with the game and kept playing it for 20 years straight :)
Yes, I wish there was a way to improve historical accuracy without compromising balance. Maybe there is. Not counting on it tho.
@@paweborkowski6959 Im sure that Chinese could be kept strong with the above mentioned nerf. Perhaps even more starting vills and a little starting food? I bet a historian could point out some strong parts of their army
@@reeceengineering3560 I would have to check but I worry that would create idle TC time. Or it would delay a lumbercamp+mill too much.
@@paweborkowski6959 They'd have to begin with enough food to avoid that
@@reeceengineering3560 Exactly. So maybe they could not start with less than they already have. I'll calculate that today cos i'm interested. Ask me tomorrow :D
Fun match, I love those chaotic games where one guy just goes for it relentlessly, without any real structure or plan.
A lot of respect for komtan for fighting back!
Yeah, at one point narrowed the score from 3k to 1.5k difference.
So I'm just starting to play ranked after finishing the majority of the campain and I'm apparently settling in on an Elo around 1k.. Now I've been searching for low Elo turnaments and I found that you (T90) sometimes host small low elo turnaments. Are there any planned for the near future? Does anyone know more on that subject in general maybe?
Thx in advance!
I t think AoEZone has tournament listings.
@@guessthatsitthen4982 found it but nothing really regarding low elo (C-Tier turnaments)
@@199Bubi hm, I believe there are other sites like that, maybe someone else knows one for your elo range or google perhaps?
@@guessthatsitthen4982 tried both and had no succes sadly
It really does seem like conquistadors have worse accuracy than in the past. Is that confirmed or has someone tested it?
Praise the love for the UA-cam channel with a like folks!
new meta
no horse collar
So what made me wonder a bit... Why keep going with crossbows...? when seeing conquistadors I'd instantly go into kamels and light cav (Maybe spears) - especially when the rams came! (I know easy to say when not under pressure)
Three archery ranges making skirmishers would have changed the game.
It's 200IQ to not get horse collar if your farms get denied by castles before they expire anyway.
Ah would you look at that! Just as I was trying to figure out which of my most fav 2 civs(spanish&chinese) I would like to play today...
This strat used to be better with AoC conqs. But above that, I miss AoC towers. You could end the game with a good tower rush. In this game conqs were shown again to be too weak to end the game there. I'd buff them in castle age again to do better with archery range units, komtan could've committed to xbow+skirm production.
This happened to me, and it was the worse. primarily cause they didnt try to finish off, instead put them far enough out to make it impossible to do anything but not enough to destroy you, basically forcing you to resign or deal with the pain
Very very nice video. I like this kind of strat, just simple but brilliant I think.
beautify casted t90, i have been thoroughly entertained
Imagine a function in CA where you can toggle on/off icons of any buildings or tech in the timeline. That would be sick
What would that do exactly? Genuinely curious.
@@paweborkowski6959 It would be great for casters for analyzing matches once they're finished. This game has too many things that matter along a game.
@@paweborkowski6959 I wrote this while I was watching T90 analyze the post game stats for 3 minutes
@@paweborkowski6959 Omg man you really are in the mood of discussing stupid stuff huh? I just proposed a feature acording to something T90 said.
That is some nice utilisation of Spanish strenghts
amaizing video, I love how you talk in the games, very entretaining,, best wishes from Argentina
Ti is You (You Wei)
oh Ti is You (You Wei)
sometimes you 1v1, and the plays that you're making,
people tell you that it is wrong
i say when it drops, oh you gonna, feel it
know that you were playing wrong
i say a castle drop! oh castle (castle!)
oh yeah, castle's gonna drop on you
Castle drop definitely seems like a frustrating one to fight. I'm a scrub that only plays pve with a buddy or two because we enjoy comp stomping lol
Glad most annoying strat is back, it was what got me back into AoE2
Is DE with expansions seriously $120
Castle dropping is ruining this game
Every single game I play is against a castle dropper. If it doesnt go up they quit. If it does they spam more castles and do nothing else.
Most annoying strat is lith 3 minute drush - the only way you can scout it by guessing based on score - and even if you think its coming you still need to spend wood on palisades and panic get boar before they lame you.
This is my take on it.
Cool stuff. Enjoyed the video. Thanks. (OK, there's a comment for you 👍)
潮州 is a city in southern China
工夫 is Chinese KongFu
So his name means a kind of Chinese traditional tea, to drink it you must have KungFu
Castle dropping is really fun to do, but its not so fun to get castle dropped ;p
Agressive castle drop using the Khmers is one of my main strategies.
Thats why I like playing Lithuanians, the leitis spear just impales the vills with one strike vs these concs firing 10 times at one
This series is so annoying. Makes me rage infront of the comp. Can you flip it and show games where the good side wins? :D
Fighting with buildings is not how I like to play this game. I know its not the best but I dont care. I like to fight with soldiers and ships.
I do a castle drop with lithuanians about half the time. Around 850 ELO
On the flipside komtan was tower dropping his wood line which is an equally douche move.
error in the description? I think the most annoying strategy playlist is copy pasted over by the socials 11
Idk games are just about cheap wins now
most annoying strat is teammates using mangonels to kill your buildings and you cant fight back, made a mistake reinstalling this game.
I mean, what did Komtan wrong during this game ? idk, how to counter that ? should he have rushed trebs ?
Gotta say it - no one expects the Spanish inquisition
23:00 OMG I needed to know this tip like yesterday elo. Thank you
Chinese too OP. Any other civ would’ve died long ago
I love castle dropping, I'm 1200 eloish. And they work, but also can cost you the game. I also love playing Mongols so castle dropping can be a problem lol
Am I the only one who thinks Komtam is a loser for resigning rather than fighting til the end?
That's a hot and spicy cup of TEA !!! 😋👍☕
M 🦘🏏😎
Why did Comtan not make any skirms againt the Conquistadors?
if games always follow the same ish pattern then they will get boring to watch
23:10 your accent..... Are you from the great lakes?
It really is the aoe2 version of protos canon rushing in sc2.
HEavy Camels was a sick read
Annoying but man he played it pretty well..
It's amazing that you mention Spanish is bottom tier.. I have always considered them VERY dangerous due to their Tech Trees Alone. They've got a Majority of every Civ's Perks (Hussars, Paladins and even a Majority of The High Spec-Gun Powder Units).. and of course; The Conquistador, I believe.. is the Second Most Deadliest Macro Unit in The Game (to my Personal favourites - Mangudais). In The Right Hands of course.
Chu Ko Nu is dangerous sure.. but on foot? In low numbers? Hardly a nuisance.
The most annoying thing is what got me into your channel.

Castle drops are kinda a meh strat
I like making siege, I make siege every game, I play slavs for the purpose of making more siege.
At like 400 elo, it makes people resign when their castle drop gets wasted.
Not much point discussing strategies at 400 elo because at that level it means very little and the execution of basics means almost everything
Hellooooo!
Annoying strat? Frank Paladin duhhhh
Keep up the good work T90! LEL series gives me hope
Im so bad at this game but these are so fun to watch
i do this with Bulgarians it works way to well.
This is me in campaigns lmao
come at me bro
This one day I played a few games and lost like four in a row. So I decided to go for something whacky for my last game of the day.
Ethiopians
Send 12 to stone at the start of feudal, double range, produce as much archers as possible.
send out archers before castle age to clean up his scouts.
When castle hit I dropped 3 castles on his production buildings bought a fourth castle with severe market abuse and dropped it on the 2nd tc foundation as he hit castle.
creating shotel warriors as out of all the castles as soon as it is up. it was brutal the guy got mega titled so I had to kill everything before he called the GG.
Tried it a few times after that, never worked again
Conquistadòres, not conquìstadores
Wooooo perfect timing I needed a video like that from you while I cook :)
41 mins of cooking?! darn
@@ikkw An hour of cooking a large pasta salad made from multiple ingredients with many I have to cut myself.
Tired: I'll win via perfect economic growth and optimized army composure
Wired: It doesn't matter how strong my economy is as long as I make sure the enemy's is worse
Wow t90 this so a record 4 videos is 2 says
Man... they would be annoying
Love the youtube targeted content! I usually skip over the videos that seem to be clips from twitch sessions. Thanks for posting this!
Why is Spanish a bottom 5 civ?
Castle drop is really annoying
Castle droping is fun because it is the easy way to suuround your opponent. While making them feel helpless.
well in castel age there was not rifling so the aim was not so good. it's right that they can't shoot well
What if Komtan had placed palisades in areas around the TC that precluded the building of a castle? Seems like a low cost way to mitigate this strategy, curious as to your thoughts. I suppose conq / mangonel could shoot foundations
