I want to send a huge thank you for these videos. I am a stay-at-home dad who just started doing photography as an on-the-side hobby just a little before the pandemic started. Making it through the pandemic with my now 5-year-old daughter and 4-year-old son has been emotionally difficult for my wife and me. A little after the pandemic started watching your videos has helped me figure out a lot about the camera and how to work with it to get the type of image I am hoping for. PS. I use your photography challenge videos whenever I can to find a stress relief project.
Hi Ethan. I'm so glad you have enjoyed watching my videos and taking part in the challenges - the pandemic has affected so many people in so many ways that I'm very happy to have been able to play a small part in giving people some distraction and relief from the stress of the daily grind. Thanks for watching and taking a moment to leave a comment, I wish you and your family all the very best. Paul.
Really useful tips - as always. I used the digital zoom function previously after seeing your video about using it for moon photos. Made such a difference! My friend also taught me how to set up and use 'back button focus' on my Canon 1300D. Could that be an idea for a future video Paul? I find it's really useful for aviation & wildlife photography when you have fast moving subjects, but also for other photography as well.
I love using the digital zoom to fine tune the focusing. I recently purchased some extension tubes and tested them out. The view did look pretty good until I zoomed in and realized it was just a bit off on the focusing. What a difference! Thanks again for your great tutorials!
I'm making a notebook of your handy tips that I can keep in my camera bag. Yes, you're that good at explaining the how-tos without overwhelming my mind with everything else you have to consider before taking a shot. One day, I'll have it down...but not today, :).
I know you already know, but when you zoom into a picture, you can also scroll around the image with the multi pad around the SET button. Again, thanks for all the knowledge!!!
Hi There, what a great tip! I recently bought the Canon R5 with their 24-70mm RF lens but I noticed that having taken the care focus at the bottom third of the frame for my landscape photography I then started to think this lens is not very sharp and considered selling my new lens to buy a 24-70mm Tamron lens. So what you are really saying is, if I do what you did, my images will become much sharper? Again thank you for your easy approach to learning our digital photography...
I wanna thank you for your tutorial videos. It really help me getting through various settings of my Canon 80D. Your videos are always easy to learn and straight to the point.❤
Your videos are the absolute best I’ve found to help me learn to take better pictures. It’s so hard to find videos that are detailed and easy to understand as well as put into practice, thanks so much for what you do!
I admit I did not know all that information. Very good thanks! I have a Canon Rebel and this will apply nicely. I found a really good Olympus mirror-less in a pawn shop, it's fantastic, but a little harder to figure out all the features. I keep trying though..
Great tips again, thanks Paul & I love the way you simplify things to make it a lot more interesting. Your tips have helped me no-end in my photography.
Thanks once again Paul, including for the tips. I've been able to adopt how to use Digital Zoom and both tips. Please keep up the excellent, easy to follow, videos. Regards, Andy
Thanks for clarifying this! I have used this a while back when photographing the moon but I since I rarely use a tripod, I've never thought about using it for landscapes or macro. Thanks, Paul!!
I wasn't sure of the official name for zooming in to check focus, but I have always called it zoom to focus. Both my old Panasonic FZ45 bridge camera and my Canon 80D can do it and I use it a lot more now then I used to. Well, to be honest, with my memory problems, I did keep forgetting how to use it and which buttons to use. Then I just had to rely on auto focus or hope my manual focus was spot on, which it wasn't always. 🙈
Another great informative video Paul, discovered this feature on my camera by mistake one time, but it looks like I should be using it more. Thanks again, regards.
This is a great tip. I have a nikon Cool pixs L120. It is a great camera however, I feel that it may be doing damage in that not being able to other things that the other cameras do! Am I wrong or should I just learn how to use my camera more, and appreciate what I have?
I wish the digital camera makers would make the viewfinders with a 'split screen' feature like in the 35mm film camera days. That way you can really tell if you are out of focus, especial when in manual mode focusing.
@Photo Genius, excellent video. Thanks from Melbourne, Australia. Do you mind sharing the settings you used for that Brisbane photo please? I am a beginner and would love to try it out for a snap of Melbourne CBD. Thanks
Hello paul. I am sending you this message just ask one question.how to turn off the stabilizer on the cannonoes1300d please.i have watched all of your videos up to date.thank you.
Hi Terry, the Canon 1300D does not have in camera stabilization. But you may have it built into the lens, if so there will be a switch on the side of the lens so you can easily turn it off.
As usual, precise, useful information. I've used digital zoom to correct some macro shots and it really does make a difference. Could you possibly at some point explain lighting, with particular reference to indoor macro photography? I really struggle to achieve lighting that looks remotely normal. Thanks.
Paul what great tips! I will start using digital zoom more, so many of my shots are not in focus. They look good until I zoom in on the eye. Speaking of focus, when shooting the model walking “in toward you” how are you doing the focus on that. Thanks.
Hello again and thank you for the videos ....I have a question for you ....I have a p1000 nikon and I managed to get a video of saturn last night and jupiter as well with three of her moons...but I got no color what am I doing wrong as its taken me forever to shoot them two planets and what can I do about it ..?
All of the vids I’ve seen the zoom all looks different. For example some times the 500mm looks like it zooms very far and sometimes it doesn’t. Any reasons why?
Hello! I am new to cameras and just want to get to know them. Am I able to digitally zoom when taking a photo and have the photo be that zoomed in or is that not possible?
I have a 5DSr, shoot strictly landscape and use back button focus. So when my lens is set to auto focus on my subject and it is sharp then I go to 16x magnification and my image is instantly horribly blurry to the point that you can barely make out what you are looking at. At that point I tap back button focus again and if needed adjust the focus ring to fine tune even though lens is not in manual focus mode. Is this normal for it to go completely out of focus just because I am magnifying the image? I could see a little because it’s getting closer but it loses all focus.

On a Sony camera you can use digital zoom to magnify the image you take. Try it sometime.
Do you know how to turn on the digital zoom on a Minolta mn35z super zoom?? I'm really struggling
All of the vids I’ve seen the zoom all looks different. For example some times the 500mm looks like it zooms very far and sometimes it doesn’t. Any reasons why?
Is there any way you can save a photo after zooming in on it?
