So glad I found this video, recently purchased a caddy myself which has all the touran seats etc and was really stuck for places that I could potentially fit a leisure battery that wasn’t going to be in the way and roll around! Hi mate i loved the video , i got my mrs a caddy too and am in the process of switching my stuff from a T5 to the caddy for her. In all honesty thats a myth abut the two batterys (starter and leisure battery) having to be the same ampage. So long as both batteries are same age , ie one isnt few years old and other new , also using the same charging technology then good to go. I have a 60Ah starter and 120ah leisure battery and have had them running for 3 1/2 years , ham radio gear , kettles , phones , laptops i usually get around 3-4 hours normal use before i give the engine a turn to top it back up

Looking at doing something like this with my caddy and i hate the split charging systems they always play up and cause battery drains or dont charge correctly. Your idea seems far simpler
Hey bud so if you only charging one extra battery it’s fine, it’s only when you put a few batteries in the back it cooks the alternator. Wiring wise it’s very simple just a straight wire to the rear battery with a breaker switch in between 👍
Would love to see a video on how the wiring system is running from the main battery, to the leisure battery, breaker and also how the switches for the tv, lights and USB are connected mate. I SO need to know how this is all connected as I’m gonna be doing mine and LOVE your setup. 🙏🏼

Had a look at that battery boost tool you were given, I have two caddies and it’s a nightmare driving them every day to keep the battery topped up. Thought that is the perfect tool for me……£400 😮

Hey Ben I never knew either till I researched it either, good point about dc chargers I forgot to mention that part. You can have a bigger battery in the back than the front but you have to have the same size batteries in the back linked up. Thank you for the comment appreciate that 👍

@@Benboss96 so do you have a split charge? If your engine battery is weak they will effect the charge in the back battery to. When the split charge is on it does still say 14odd volts in the back but the lower front battery doesn’t let the back one charge more than the front one can take. Thank you appreciate that 👍
I’ve got a renogy dc to dc charger, mad bit of kit it’s 40amp and it charges very quickly. I‘ll get a new starter battery this weekend and see how it affects the battery capacity in the back 👍

Great info regarding the batteries needing to be the same Ah rating 👍. I wasn't aware of that. I've been using a 75ah leisure and a 100ah starter. I have a problem with my split charge set up. I'm getting 14volts at the leisure battery terminals with them disconnected but as soon as I connect the battery it drops to 12.5 volts. Any ideas ? My relay is a simple 100 amp 4 pin relay triggered by a ignition live. I've now replaced the leisure battery with an identical battery to the starter for now.
Hey Matt thank you appreciate the comment, I didn’t know about same size battery till I done some research they definitely don’t mention that when they sell you a split charge. You can buy a DC to DC charger that does different ah charging but they are alot more money. So it is normal for the volts to drop when a battery is connected as it’s open current which always is higher. I wonder if it’s to do with the leisure battery being smaller.

It was the same with the 75ah leisure battery and the same with the current battery I'm trying, not a leisure but a Bosch S5 exactly the same as the starter battery. I'm trying this after seeing your video 🙂 I think I might need to replace the whole wiring and relay and start again. At the moment the batteries are connected with heavy cable on both negative and positive sides, the negative goes from the leisure to the starter battery not to the body. Maybe that could be an issue ? I might invest in a VSR relay and ditch the old school 4 pin job.

@@YTDTETV Yeah, it's bothered me for a while that earth wire. The only reason it's like that is the van originally had a swing lift crane in the back and the leads came from the starter battery to the back with an Anderson connector on the end. I simply cut that off and connected the two to the leisure battery. A bit lazy I guess but I couldn't see why not at the time. I'll re connect the earth to the body and see how it goes. @@YTDTETV Nathan, I had a break through with my split charge system. I mentioned I re purposed the old Swing lift crane cables on my van from the starter battery into the back of the van. Well, on the positive terminal of the starter battery there was a device called a Short Stop, Designed to break the circuit if a fault occurs then re sets after a period of time, inline from the positive terminal to the split charge relay. At the time I thought, Leave it in line it will act as a fuse, Anything shorts it will break the circuit. Never thought anything of it until the other day and wondered if that could be the issue. I removed it and connected the split charge relay direct to the battery and it's sorted it. 14.2 volts at the leisure battery when running the engine. No idea why it caused a problem but it obviously doesn't agree with split charge systems. Now I need to get a Midi fuse in line from the battery to relay as it's no longer protected at that end. I've still got the earth wire the same as before, direct to the batteries, not the body. I may still change that though.
That’s it mate, probably could do with a big fuse of some sort maybe a car amp fuse of something I’ll prob stick one in on mine. The isolator is a breaker switch so might not even need one 🤷
@@DaveyDays it works perfect, the idea of split charge it’s automatic rather than flicking the breaker on and off, only reason I went this route is the few vehicles I’ve fitted them to the battery drained if sat for a few days.
Hey rich yes mate, it’s basically just an android car stereo but I just use them as tv’s to watch UA-cam etc, I’ve bought loads of them. Have put the link to the one I bought in the description 👍 they do them in a few different sizes but the 10” is the biggest. Your a man of sound and I don’t know if they are that powerful for pumping tunes but good enough I guess.
