LOVE that you picked up on Felix being a low-key misery tourist; that fascination with Oliver's seemingly grimy life. He's so much like his mother. It's a real pity this (like so much else) wasn't developed more.

All of the symbolism that you figured out with the sun rising after victories, vomit leading to lies and other things was impressive.

What's crazy to me is everyone wants to paint Felix in a bad light and to me he's a privileged guy who's just searching for a real sincere friend and everytime he thinks he has one, the relationship is somehow ruined.

The movie is a Modern day Vampire story. As soon as he's invited in all he wants to do is feed off these people and own every aspect of the lifestyle. It's not that he didn't know who he was. It was more that the audience didn't know who he was because we've got a lot of baggage when it comes to the fish out of water scenario in movies. I think it's mainly supposed to be a subversion of the eat the rich power fantasy to show that not all the down and outs are morally superior to rich people (Who are usually just cardboard cutouts of immorality, greed, and duplicity). The end reveal is not really a twist, all the signs are there, but I do agree. The Pie in the Face reveal at the end was unnecessary.

The nakedness at the end was about really seeing Oliver as he really is. The bare Oliver enjoying his evilness.

I'm not sure why the captions didn't work on Amazon. The movie does have them on there.

24:30 my immediate response to this question before I continue the video. I thought this movie was about the lengths one would go to feel included. I thought Oliver wanted to be anyone, become anything, in order to simply be ✨️ somebody ✨️ in the eyes of this family hes obsessed with, especially in the eyes of Felix. By the end I felt this was not the case which was honestly disappointing. His character arch felt messy and aimless to me and his actual goal seemed very shallow.
I'm really enjoying this video btw! You're commentary is always so thought provoking!

One could see Oliver's comic book villain monologue about it being all part of the plan as just another lie he told himself because it was too painful for him to acknowledge the fact that Felix, the man he killed. The man he was in love with to the point of obsession died hating him for the charlatan he was.

We are watching him confess what he did to her before he killed her…..he destroyed her whole family. Hearing is the last thing you lose before death and shows just how cruel he really was.

Ollie didn't just destroy the Cattons. He usurped them.

I guess we're not getting back to that "old-fashioned sink system."
Yeah, Elspeth doesn't quite fall for Oliver's line.
I just thought Oliver recognized Farleigh's ring.
This movie reminds me of a movie I love, _The Talented Mr. Ripley._
I really like your annotations. I'm also so excited to see a reactor who doesn't like this movie. ♥

Oh how I missed your commentary!🎉 Loved the reaction and definitely hoping to hear more thoughts eventually!
As for the movie, I don’t think it accomplished what it wanted to, but that exactly along with a good premise, brilliant cast and gorgeous cinematography did exactly what a number of other good-looking but deeply flawed things had done. And that being, scratching that collective itch to do the post-mortem and fix the thing. Genuinely just love it when it happens.

I'm obsessed with this movie, but I do see the plot holes if you over analyze it. I enjoyed it in the same way I enjoy a vampire movie with its sexy(horny), aesthetic, unhinged appeal. The additional layers, incorporating mystery and psycho drama contributed to the fun. With the witty one liners, it also reminds me of Clue set in absurdity. The dining room scene was a masterpiece.

44:09 It was a nice dick! So much of the film was about Ollie's obsession and desire. Maybe the last scene is purely fan service for the audience desiring Ollie.
I love movies/games that end in an out of place dance number. I didn't realize it was exclusive to Elizabethan comedies. To me the realism isn't that important for this kind of scene. The plot already ended and the filmmakers and audience are having some fun.

2006!? I thought it was set in the 70s or 80s? I think it was the slightly sepia look in the titles.

He planned to hurt Felix IF Felix rejected him which yeah hun he was not going to deal with his problems when he never had to. It was a done deal. And you couldn’t tel him the remaining truths and be sure he would send you away. He’d gone too far.

Ironically it was Felix's need to keep up appearances for the sake of the family spare his own embarrassment over Oliver's fraud which got him killed.

RIGHT?! Like the director clearly had really great shots and plot points but just couldn't seem to make up her mind about what kind of characters they wanted and then they tried to compensate for it with unreliable narrator.

  • @Royal_Chief_Architect
    @Royal_Chief_Architect 7 місяців тому +3

If the narrative is from the unreliable narrator who is the antagonist and he’s victorious, then the tragedy being a comedy to him at the end makes sense. People keep calling this movie contentious and im like calm down it’s all right there. If you don’t like villain wins just say that. I love a controversial movie that’s not bad. You can’t call it bad because you didn’t like it you can call it bad because the team that produced it didn’t know what they were doing. I think they know exactly what they were going for, and some executions could be better. But a movie that felt like the main character sounds like the point.

    • @doctorcanonvo4647

I never said this movie was bad? In fact, I said it was objectively good, that it just wasn't for me. I even gave it an 8/10. I've said I don't like Villain Protagonists in a lot of other videos. and I don't think Oliver is a very good one.

I think people need to ask themselves why scenes that were not resonating actually happened from Ollie’s perspective. And it obviously at all wasn’t about class. It was about people. Over consuming without thought. Feeding on others recklessly and the consequences.
