Continuing with our Twilight Saga movie reaction and commentary series, it's Twilight: New Moon. The second movie in the saga was an interesting ride. A lot to talk about... We hear the third movie is great though so we're looking forward to the next movie commentary in this series!

Also, the thing about Jasper's "ability" is that he can, not only influence other people's emotions, but also feel them. By that logic, with Jasper living and being near other vampires, is constantly dealing with his and other vampires' hunger. So, when Bella bleeds, Jasper is very overwhelmed by everyone's (including his own hunger) hunger, along with the fact that he's new to it.
Also, with Bella's blood "singing" to Edward, Jasper feels that too
Whyyyy can’t I have a book with all these cool vampire backstories and powers without Meyers’ Bella/Edward bullshit
Its been so long since I've read the books that I completely forgot about that lol. They did Jasper dirty in the movies, no real development.

Honestly I was surprised there was a team Jacob after Eclipse.
Some people do get gray hair when young. Though not my entire head, I started getting white hair in a certain spot around age 15 and even would try coloring it but it was very resistant. By the time I graduated high school at 17, I had a completely white streak of hair from my temple (picture Rogue of X-Men, it was also a nickname some called me).
So did your hair end up going all grey or do you just have a white streak? - Sam
I'll never understand why Bella insisted so much in seeing Edward everywhere when he left her completely unprotected... He was not good for her, but I guess she couldn't notice that 'cause this enormous psychological problem that she has and this movie show like it's normal to be this way. Like "love is like that" and it's not true. I have 26, it doesn't matter now, I can watch this movie with an "objective" eye, sort of, but for teenagers, not a good example at all about healthy relationships.
A better depiction would have been showing Bella do something, Anything for herself that did not have to do with Edward to make herself feel better. Show her confronting her own psychological problems and at least trying to recover from her depression. But no, its just extreme levels of codependency all the way through and it's honestly sickening
By normal human standards Bella and Edward are completely co dependent.
The problem being this is a supernatural show, and you can't fairly judge the relationship by normal human standards. The books do a better job of conveying this than the movies, but there's a mating bond that existed between them. Vamps mate for life... they simply can't get over each other the way humans can. Edward assumed that because Bella was human it wouldn't apply to her... but he was wrong.
And yes supernatural things like vampire mating bonds and wolf imprints by normal standards is unhealthy and co-dependent. But what can ya do?
@@noelbernabe8704 That is a weak pathetic defense for these characters' behaviour. This "mating bond" sure explains Edward's attachment, but the choices on how he handles it are entirely his own fault. Just one example, I could give plenty more: With leaving Bella, he could have been honest and mature - seriously he's 109 years old - and said "I'm leaving because I don't want to hurt you". Instead he chose to take away any and all agengency and what little self-esteem she had. He wouldn't even let her decide for herself if she wanted to keep a picture. He tries to control how she thinks, feels and reacts to things all the time. He lies and manipulates her all the time throughout all four books. A mating bond didn't make him do that shit.
And Bella, we can measure her by a human standard and she is extremely codependent and toxic as hell with her own behaviour. She never does one single thing that isn't all about Edward or Jacob. She uses Jacob as an emotional crutch despite knowing that it hurts him. And while she believes Edward doesn't want her, she thinks that if Alice turns her she can "follow him anywhere and won't let him be distracted." Creepy Ex Stalker Alert 📢
And Jacob, 90% of the disgusting toxic bullshit he did cane before he imprinted on anyone.
So yeah, we can judge them.
@@breezy3392 I'm not saying the mating job made Edward act as controlling as he did. I'm merely saying it's the cause of their co-depenency. They don't have the option of simply moving on like normal relationships.
But yeah, you can fault them on a lot of the bad choices they make. The vampire mating bond doesn't excuse that that.
I will disagree with you on one point about Edward. I think he for the most part stopped being lying and manipulative to Bella halfway through Eclipse. I think he realized his behavior was wrong, apolotized, and for the most part gave her a lot more trust and freedom afterwards.
The only part afterwards where he maybe come off too controlling was when he was afraid the baby would kill her in Breaking Dawn. But that was an understandable fear, and despite his concerns he not only allows Bella to have her way but in delivers the baby himself. Point being I think Edward had a completed character arc in Eclipse and was mostly okay from that point onward. In fact I'd even say he was arguably TOO understanding and accomodting to Bella in the later part of Eclipse.
@@noelbernabe8704 OK, common ground on a lot there. Still some points debatable about Edward in book 4, but let's leave that alone.
Bella, she is human, there is nothing supernatural working on her at this point. She is just a codependent human - shown by her also attaching to Jacob when Edward wasn't around - who is also toxic in her own actions and desperately needs a good therapist.
Vampire mating bond may cause Edward's attachment, ok, but his choices, his behavior and how he treats Bella is on him. I think we're agreeing that we can judge the toxic behaviors of all parties, is that right.

Bella doing dangerous stuff the only way for her to see Edward. Edward took any sign he existed from her room before he left.
As far as Bella’s breakup I can kinda get it. When one of my (now ex) broke up with me I sank down in the doorway and sobbed but in my defense my dad had died late October of that year and he broke up with me like a week or so before Christmas so I had a lot going on emotionally. We got back together a few days later. When he decided to finally actually break up with me he did it the day of my EKG tech certification test which if you are unaware is nerve racking. You pay to take this test and if you fail you have to wait a month before you pay again to retake it and I don’t test well. I got home, had to wait 2 weeks for results (I passed with flying colors btw 420 out of 500) and he just dropped that bombshell. Was a dick move
The parkour edit 😭😂😂😭
It's a madness, don't take no Ls
Okay but if vampy powers don't work on her, why did jasper change her emotions earlier in the movie????
I love the perspectives pointing out things, like how jacob was done dirty but needed to let go or like the fact so much toxicity is going on lol. Ready for the next one buds🤘
I feel like someone also pointing out that they've only been not-broken-up dating for like 4-5 months maybe at this point, possibly less. The older I get the more her being 18 making these decisions horrifies me. As a teen I loved the books though- ah pre-critical thinking.
24:54 I've read that they actually considered replacing the actor because there were complaints that he wasn't buff enough in the first movie, and it forced Taylor to work out a lot to put on more muscle just to keep his job, which is honestly really gross considering he was *17* and it was mainly a bunch of older women complaining that this teenager wasn't hot enough for them. This movie was only 4 years after Sharkboy and Lavagirl.
Yeah, I heard about this too... I hear he hated his training and diet for it as well. I feel bad for the guy for quite a few reasons - Sam
So I always thought with the age thing that if he was physically 17 years old and his brain has literally not matured or developed past the age of 17 then he truly is 17 forever even though he’s been alive for so long and therefore the relationship is okay? And that the reason that his mind is so advanced is bc he’s a vampire who’s lived so long and gathered information. Experience and knowledge but without maturation or development. And the major issue with inappropriately aged relationships is both the physical and mental developmental differences but in theory we don’t have that here? Idk
Let's face it, charlie was carrying the movie on his shoulders by being the sensible person

Alice and Jasper do have some really cool backstories but I think Edwards before the Bella stuff was really interesting. I don't want to say what it was because I don't remember if i't mentioned in this movie or a different one. Oh, Also there is a you-tube mini movies series thing that looks at Alice's and Jasper's backstories and how they met. It's worth the watch and honestly I'm dissapointed they're considering a movie from Edwards perspective vs a movie about Alice and Jasper before the Cullen's.
LMAO I swear when he was doing a CPR and you said just let her go I started dying, and then when she woke up you said FUCK😭😭😭😂
So super late with this comment but the reason she felt like she need to the adrenaline to see him is because she did not have a photo. Edward was thorough and took everything related to them when they left. They even took out the stereo that Emmett had installed in her truck. It was probably overkill and made the situation worse as Bella probably started to second guess her sanity. Great reaction. Made me laugh so hard through most of it.

The problem is that Jacob would've been a better choice for Bella if Stephanie had not ruined his character by turning him into a non-consent jackass. The whole problem with the Twilight books and the way that Stephanie wrote them is that ideology that relationships have to have a large number of problems or else they aren't fascinating or able to be invested in. A lot of YA and fiction in general circumvents this trope whilst also having passionate and healthy relationships. It's just hard to believe that a character that has been relatively rational in the context of this movie becomes so angsty so fast. But I guess he did have to compete with Mr angst emo king himself Edward Cullen. Literally, Bella would be better just leaving them both and getting a therapist to sort out her codependency issues. You should never 'need' someone to be able to live.
It's easy to believe a character can get angry so fast if they are a werewolf. Meyers established pretty clearly that young wolves have difficulty controlling their emotions. See what happened to Emily because of Sam.
Point being there are downsides to being involved with wolves just as there are with vampires. There was no easy conflict free choice for Bella.
Of course it's easy to say that Bella should just leave them both, except for the fact that she's a clumsy danger magnet with no sense of self preservation who constantly needs saving. Without her supernatural body guards Bella would have been dead in like the third chapter of the first book. For all their downsides, supernatural boyfrends have their uses.
As unhealthy and codependent as it all is... I will say, when he leaves and she's just numb for months.. It hit me hard because the man I loved died when I was 22. THAT'S what it was like, the depression was intense. I cried, I did nothing, I remember nothing of those few months after he passed away.
I get that a large part of these movies is ridiculously extreme, but the depiction of her depression is hella accurate. I actually remember spending months putting myself in dangerous decisions, but I was legitimately trying to die. Not trying to "see" him, I was someone who was suicidal, but couldn't purposefully commit the act, so I was trying to find ways for life to kill me.
Yes, it's unhealthy. Yes, it was an addiction. And YES, it deeeefinitely brought some mental health issues to the surface. HOWEVER, the portrayal in this movie isn't entirely wrong, and I don't wish it on anyone.
Of course that does make alot of sense but can I ask were you in a relationship THIS bad for you that your whole entire existence revolved around him showing you an ounce of affection?
Also I'm so incredibly sorry for your loss. I hope your/you've healed from the tremendous pain it must have caused you.
@@lesbiangoddess290 Nah, the relationship itself wasn't codependent and crazy lol. But the aftermath was very similar in a lot of ways, regardless.

What part??
The reason why this movie has color is because the first movie had a lot of blue and grey tones, which fit with the atmosphere of Forks and enhances the pale complexion of the vampires, but New Moon was given a much warmer look, with orange and brown tones. This is because Twilight’s main focus is Bella’s relationship with Edward and thus the introduction of vampires, while New Moon is more about Bella’s relationship with Jacob, her best friend who is revealed to be a werewolf/shape-shifter. The subsequent movies in the Twilight Saga had either more neutral colors or a combination of warm and cold, depending on the scene, as is the case of Eclipse, where the scenes involving the newborns and the battle were more blueish and cold. These are easy to miss details in the Twilight movies but they ultimately elevate the experience of watching them and show that, contrary to what many believe, there was attention to detail when making these movies.
For sure! These movies were cinematically beautiful, the story itself is just super toxic and kinda bad.
I think what could have emphasized that would be that when Edward left and Jacob took a bigger part in her life then the colors warmed up showing that he sort of brought warmth and colour back into her life after her post breakup depression.
i think the new director came to conclusion that the first movie looked shit
Also in New Moon they tried to keep the colour red out of most scenes so it would have more impact in the scene from St. Marcus day

About the age thing: in the books they tried to pass it off as “they’re literally stuck were they are in development” so mental development too (see immortal children later on in the series) but like... idk how would that work you’d still learn from experiences and stuff and this age mentally in a way?? 😂

Tell that to normal humans who are stuck at a certain mental age but they experience the world and grow physically without aging mentall. Those people exist.
@@MrsNiaboo2000 Yeah, I think I know what you're talking about- kinda like regression in the psychoanalytical theory? So I could understand how it would work with vampires as well. But must suck to not be physically able to develop your personality or be able to work through past traumas (like a human can if they choose). I guess that's why it doesn't make a whole lot of sense that this is a canon fact about vampires.
@@MrsNiaboo2000 Yeah. Due to trauma( usually childhood trauma) you can be mentally stuck at a certain age. There's 30 year olds who act 15 or 16. Because of their trauma. There's a few on UA-cam that I know of. It's kinda really fucking sad to be totally honest.
I feel like that was only valid for kids, as their brains weren't developed into adulthood yet when they were turned therefore they didn't have the same tools an adult has for understanding the world.

That's actually not true. [SPOILER AHEAD]
In the third book, they explain that because of his ability to feeling other people's emotions, he would feel really horrible everytime he killed someone, so it became umbearable
I think it’s partly because Bella is so ‘succulent’ to vampires that makes it so bad. But I have wondered what would happen if he was sitting next to someone & they got a really bad nosebleed or something🤣
My guess is that Alice would foresee it & be there to head things off by getting him out of the area real quick.
I think it was either in the books or the official guide that they mentioned that he purposefully doesn't breathe most of the time at school (he jus moves his chest to emulate it) + he mentally prepares (so he is prepared for all that human smell; also adds to people's perception that he's weird lol), but in the papercut scene he wasn't mentally prepared and so snapped.

I think the only reason I never liked Jacob as much as a lot of girls was that I didn't like how pushy he seemed to me. He's that friend you have where you make it REALLY obvious that you do NOT feel the same way (like with the handholding scene etc.), yet they just keep pushing and making you feel like shit for just wanting/needing a friend... and yeah, that friend SUCKS. And seeing Bella trying to negotiate, and trying to make promises she doesn't want to because she is afraid that if she doesn't give him what he wants, and he feels like all he will ever get from her is "just" her friendship, she will loose him too... yeah, Jacob just never really felt like a good guy to me, nor did what they have seem healthy at all.
Don't get me wrong, what she has with Edward is unhealthy and disturbing too, and my "Edward is the one SHE wants and chooses, and that is her right" stance was as positive as I ever got about Edward, so...yeah. I was never team Edward, nor team Jacob. I was more of a "team single Bella until she can find an actual HEALTHY relationship" kind of girl, but I was also very aware that that was NEVER going to happen 😂🤣😂
Jake was a typical "nice guy" in the friend zone. Always thinking he "deserves" you strictly because he's a nice guy. Guilting her into kissing him was so trash.
I agree completely, I think I was ‘team Edward’ only because I liked Robert Pattinson. Yes Edward and Bella’s relationship is not healthy but I hate how people say Jacob and Bella’s is. It isn’t not only because of Jacob but Bella too, She literally only went to him because of what she can gain from him, to use him feel closer/ see glimpses of another guy
JACOB IS THE WORST
Both of them sucked. Jacob was a whiny Bitch that couldn't take no for an answer and Edward is a angsty edgy 2000 teen Boy, that for some reason thought he always had to make decisions for Bella and dictate how she feels.
@@xoliswazokufa3027 No one can credibly argue Jake has a healty relationship with Bella. No one. The first time he kisses her, he sexually assaults her. The second time, he emotionally blackmails her with threats of suicide. Not saying Bellas' relationship with Edwardy is anywhere near perfect, but the relationship with Jacob actually makes it look better by comparrison.
girls night out?
therapist day in!
I died laughing
Honestly same tho.
27:49 exactly. In Midnight Sun we get more insight into her dynamic with her mom. Because Edward is at the hospital while Bella’s in a coma, he noticed that the mom has powers. Her mom is basically a super-powered narcissist (she can influence people into doing what she wants), though she isn’t aware of it. But that’s a big reason why Bella’s power is like a shield for her mind, from a small child she was protecting herself from her mom’s influence. It’s not “negative” per say, but it’s why Bella is sort of the parent in that relationship always putting her mom first and it’s also why Charlie struggled for over a decade to get over the mom.
So yeah it’s not just the Edward breakup that’s given her this anxious attachment. Bella’s codependency is highly connected to her warped relationship with her mom and Charlie being absent for most of her life.
I did not know that 😮
Frankly I stopped reading midnight sun halfway. Intresting insight
Just some context,
She doesn’t have the photo. In the book, Edward straight up ghosted her. He took the photo and everything else and erased himself from her life.
Not that that makes her behavior justified in anyway.
@مجنون شاعر I think if I remember from the books ok, it was because he didn’t want anything to remind her of him
Edit: ...I don’t know how your @ ended up in the middle of the sentence 😬 lmao
I always hated that detail. Edward didn't even have enough of a modicum of respect for Bella to let her decide if she wanted to keep a picture. That was just the cherry on top
AN ENTIRE HOUR?? You are spoiling us, let me tell you!!! Thank you for this and for doing the series. New Moon is just a huge yawn-fest but Breaking Dawn Part 1 is easily the worst in the film saga.
No worries aye 😊 we like doing them long like this - Sam
Sam being so sick and tired of Bella at the end is so damn relatable, she's so frustrating 💀 Even in the books, she and Edward hadn't even had five conversations before she was spilling that "i'm irrevocably in love with him" bullshit. The whole thing is insane!!
“Just let her go” lol. Best part of the video 🤣
I read this as he said it 🤣 too funny
Sam was brutal for that one hahahahaha it was too damn good
Worst movie in the series but it has the best soundtrack out of all the other movies. If you ever get the chance you should listen to it and the original score ☺️
I actually believed the first one is worst
Yeah, this one & Eclipse (I think. It could be Breaking Dawn Pt. I) have pretty awesome soundtracks.
True!!! This one has my favorite soundtrack!
Sure, lots of people seem to agree with that 👌 not really my vibe tho 🤷♂️ - Sam
I know Bella did use Jacob for a lot of things in this part of the book/movie, she didn't want to be lonely, she wanted the bikes fixed. But at the same time, she was somewhat transparent with viewing him as a "younger brother" she knew him from when they were both children, he's 16, she's 18. You both admitted she was being honest about her feelings being platonic for him in the Face Punch movie scene. And I do think on some level she had some feelings for him, but at the same time it was ALWAYS Edward for her. And he knows it but doesn't always respect it and tries to change her mind. Which you'll see moving forward. So all the Jacob defense to me is a little much, just because he protects her and loves her doesn't mean she owes him anything. I don't always think she treats him fairly, but the love she has always had for him is not the same type of love for Edward (which is not very healthy, but still).
THIS!!!!!! He knew she didn’t feel that way & he kept after her ugh!
I imagine Edward in therapy is like when lucifer goes to therapy and he said exactly who he is and his therapist thinks he just made it all up lol
Don't think Edward could pull it off as good as Lucifer tho xD
@@1AM1AM Tom Ellis is such a treasure
She doesn't have their photos anymore, that's why she's always trying to see him. In the books Edward hides all of the pictures he or his family appears in. You know that part in the movie where he's in her room looking at their pic together? That's when he hides all of em.
38:28 "i love how the werewolves are like DA BOYZ" followed by that weird exchange of bella being dumb got me laughing so hard i can't. "can't you just stop [being a werewolf]?" "it's not a lifestyle choice bella" right, what is she on lmfao
Actually Edward does leave in the first movie after he smells her blood and he's gone for few days from school he heads to Alaska. So, he did try to getaway but he eventually came back.
"Just let her go" 😂😂😂😂 never agreed with you more Sam 🙄🤣
My hair turned white when I was 14 so that grey hair moment with Charlie hit me hard when I first watched it
Wait, what? All your hair turned white? Permanently? - Sam
My first greys started appearing at 8 years. My hair is almost all white and I'm not even thirty yet 😭 gave up with the hair dye too.
@@themoviebudz1988 Yeah, I was already colouring my hair red so it wasn’t like I woke up with the whole lot white, but it started showing up on my roots. It’s just genetics, my mum said ‘oh yeah, that happened to me’ when she saw it. I’m 29 and still colouring it every six weeks. I don’t care so much now but as a teenager it was rough!
@@pelo4040 good for you for embracing it!
Sadie C That sucks. I can certainly imagine it being a big thing when you were in high school.
My father lost his hair very early. I remember him telling me about him being a freshman in college, sitting in class & seeing his hairs falling onto the pages of his textbook. He was pretty much 75% bald by the time he was 23 or 24.
And Jane's power is actually just making people/vampires relive the pain of turning. She is making people relive her pain, she was so traumatised by the venom and the tortures (she and her brother were about to be burned at the stake, I can tell you this it's not in the movies 😄) she wanted her ennemies to feel the pain they inflicted on her.
Edward may be A masochist but Jane is a sadist.
Do they ever give an explanation in the books about their powers? Like why they have individual powers , why a certain person might have a certain power , just how that works in general?
@@blondie9909 not really, They only have theories. I know why Jane and Alec have these powers only because Mayer said that
@@Alczix oh ok thank you !! Stay safe :)
@@blondie9909 you too! 😁
That means Jane's powers don't actually hurt vampires and humans. She just incapacitates them.
In the books, Edward goes after victoria when he leaves, but she evades him
So many things lost in translation from book to movie
She escaped everyone in the books her power was showcased pretty good in the new moon chase scene except the part where Jacob tackled her off Harry as she would of sensed the ill will immediately as he made the decision
Y'know, when I read the books Bella & Edward's characters were not this annoying. I also got the sense that Bella was well aware this was not a healthy relationship, but she just didn't care because they were just drawn to each other. I dunno, I just found reading the books less annoying than the acting in these movies. Like it just had a different feel and tone which is why I read all of them. I think Charlie is the only one that translated to the films accurately.
In the books Edward and Bella spend so much time getting to know each other, in the movies it’s so rushed
@@nursev1003 Thats what has to happen when you turn a full length novel into a 2 hour movie.
If Twilight was a TV series on the CW like say Vampire Diaries, they could have all reason to flesh out the relationship. But because they only have 2 hours, things need to move at a much faster pace.
i remember the 13 year old me fangirling over jacob and not understanding why bella didn’t choose him lmao at least jacob had a personality, edward is boring as hell 😭
Ikr
You get me. I was pissed that Bella didn’t use Jacob I was like what is wrong with you Edward has no type a personality or emotion or like anything he is boring as hell but you choose that over fine wine entertaining caring loving werewolf. Like are you crazy
Same
Yeah but Edward had a shirt
Actually everyone in the series is toxic. That’s why I own the entire, Shadowhunter book series. And unpopular opinion, the movie is good. It’s not but it’s just great. I know it has some flaws.
I feel like Bella can sometimes lead Jacob on, but overall is pretty straight forward with him about the fact that she doesn't want to be with him romantically and that she's still hung up on Edward. She tells him and yet he keep pursuing her. And she lets him, because she needs a friend and comfort in this time and knows that Jacob will only stick around and be her friend because he likes her and thinks he has a chance with her- which she tells him! At the movie she says "I don't want you to give up, because I don't want you to leave." Not "I don't want you to give up because you have a shot," no she literally just wants a friend and he doesn't know how to be that unless he thinks he has a shot. Classic "nice guy" gets "friend-zoned" and acts like the victim.
While I mostly agree with you, she nearly kisses Jacob 3 times in New Moon, and probably would have had they not been interrupted everytime. So there's enough of a mixed message there for Jacob to keep pursing her up to a point. Eventually though he obviously goes too far.
bella not cutting jacob off knowing how he AND edward feel is horrible. she is incredibly selfish in her relationship with jacob, and so is he, but to say she wasn’t absolutely toxic to jacob (and even edward to an extent) is just plain not true. you even said she LETS him pursue her because she knows he would leave if she straight up told him he was just a friend to her (which she never does, she talks around it constantly saying “i love you and need you but xyz”) and that is not fair to anyone. jacob is horrible, but so is bella.
