  • Cyndi Lauper - Girls Just Wanna Have Fun - Signature Songs That Are Actually Covers.
In the early 1980s Cyndi Lauper burst onto the music scene with her first major single release “Girls Just Want To Have Fun”.
The song reached number 2 on the Billboard charts and quickly established her as a global pop star with the song making the top ten just about everywhere in the world.
As well as being a global smash hit it was also adopted as a feminist anthem, so it may come as a surprise that the song was written and recorded by a man 4 years earlier and the song had a completely different meaning.

It's not a cover because Robert Hazzard NEVER released his version. He released his debut EP just months before Cyndi's single but did not feature this song at all. It remains a bootleg demo to this day. Cyndi's rendition remains the first released version of the song.

I actually put a whole section on why this was in fact a cover. But I took it out as i figured for the 99% of people who don't care it would have been really boring. Instead I decided I'd just debate the one or two pedants here in the comments.
      So here we are.
There's many definitions of a cover version, one is simply a recording not by the original composer. Which is what this is.
      Pretty boring right. 🤷‍♂️
The term "cover" originates from the publishing side of things... to maximise revenue publishers would place one song with multiple artists from different regions....each version covered a different area...hence cover version.
Over time it's come to mean other things too. Such as the second, or subsequent recordings of a songs, but the original definition is still valid.
Thanks for getting that out of the way early. 👍 I can now pin your comment and won't have to answer this again. 😁

@@Traxploitation Well we'll agree to disagree on our personal definitions then. What really gets confusing is when the composer releases a version of their own song AFTER somebody else already made the composition famous. For instance, Linda Ronstadt made Different Drum a big hit for Monkee Mike Nesmith in 1967. But Mike would not personally put his own song on record for another 5 years. Mike's version technically a cover, but it feels like it shouldn't be because this is the composer's own version.

Lol. It's not my "personal definition"
      It's a definition dating back over 100 years 🤦‍♂️.
The example you gave is only confusing if you apply the narrow definition that only the second and subsequent recordings are covers...regardless of who wrote it. Mike Nesmith didn't "cover" his own song 🤦‍♂️. Its not "technically a cover" at all. His version is just his version.
      All the definitions can coexist.
Cyndi Laupers version of Girls Just Wanna Have fun is a cover...Nesmiths Different Drum is not. Its really quite simple. 🤷‍♂️
That's why it doesn't "feel like it should be a cover" cos it isn't. 🤷‍♂️
Anyway, thanks for taking the time to comment. I appreciate it. 🙏

Cyndi won the VMA for best Female Music video in 1984 for "Girls Just Want to Have Fun " too, and she also won the Best New Artist Grammy in 1985 too, Blue Angel album was a great album but it didn't get any radio play, unfortunately it was a Rockabilly album 2 years before Rockabilly got big with The Stray Cats in 1982 (Blue Angel was in 1980).

It is funny that Cindi Lauper’s version is my third favorite. The best being the incredible Girl’s Just Want to Have Lunch by Weird Al followed by the original and then Cindi’s.

Lol, ironically that's one of Wierd Al's least favourites he said. 🤷‍♂️

I love things like this. Respect by Aretha Franklin is another example. Some of the best Christmas songs were written by Jews.

Totally, and just like respect the words change meaning along with the gender of the singer. Doing an ep on respect soon too... thanks for watching and commenting
