Just saw today for the first time the X1 in the flesh and I was positively surprised with the design. The proportions are just perfect, as well as some design details... I liked it very much!!
Sadly, the price difference between these two cars is huge in Canada. The q3 is about 5k (CAD) cheaper than the new X1. Therefore, I think unless there is a personal brand preference, Q3 is definitely the better choice of these two.
That is only if you get the base trim which the x1 offer 50 more horsepower in comparison to the q3

Your reviews are the next best thing to actually driving the car themselves. I am considering purchasing an X1 and have watched so many UA-cam videos but yours are the definitive statements. @@tanfer2003 Sort of....order was placed for M Sport trim, Portimao Blue, Oyster interior. Hopefully, production in February with delivery April/May. Waiting is so hard.

Had an Msport X1, traded for an X3M Competition. I really liked the way the old X1 drove, but my wife liked a bigger SUV. Space, utility, and driving dynamics, the X3M offered little more in that way on a daily basis. Love the new interior of the X1 and BMW produces such sublime four cylinder.
Great breakdown between these two vehicles! I've been eyeing the new X1 for a while now and I think I'll go ahead and pull the trigger. That engine bay comparison is really interesting and it's nice to see BMW add the attention to detail on something you'll rarely see, but having a clean engine bay is a nice feeling.

Quick note - bear in mind that the presented LED headlights are an option/add-on. Meaning that the standard LED come with a much different headlight (as well the DRL, that doesn't even look like a BMW 🤨).

@@pickrs01 my sister wanted to test the Volvo XC40 as well. Mercedes GLA was out due to it’s fixed prices. She is still to decide but I would go for the BMW.

BMW really steps up the game tremendously. I saw an X1 yesterday and man, i thought that was an X3 because their sizes and shape are so similar now!
not similar,new x1 is shorter for 20cm than x3. also new x1 is only 5cm longer than old one. so no big changes at all

Lane guidance on Q3 was switched off (at 44:10), that’s why the car went off - otherwise lane keeping is superb. Occasionally , lane guidance does switch off inexplicably and one needs to turn it back on in the infotainment (not on turning signal lever). Great review Thomas, thank you!

Had both these cars on my short list. Have owned 3 BMW's in the past and have good experiences with all 3 cars so i am probably biased towards the BMW. After a test drive today with the BMW X1 xDrive25e, i didn't even bother to go test drive the Audi. The BMW was just that good in regards to power delivery, suspension, interior quality and electric range. In my eyes almost impossible to do better in this category.

Really appreciate this review! All of the automotive journalists are way too focused on performance metrics that they forget about real-world drivability in day-to-day scenarios. In day-to-day driving, I don't really care if the steering is a bit numb, or if the car feels sporty in turns. I just want a car that's comfortable, quiet, and good for freeway driving. I have my C7 Z06 for carving twisty roads.
My employer has decided we are going hybrid instead of 100% telework. My Corvette (which I bought during covid, when we were 100% telework) is a very fun car to drive, but it's my dream car. I don't want to put 10K miles/yr commuting into the office.
With high interest rates making leasing a luxury German crossover equal to the cost of buying an economy-brand crossover, I'm leaning towards a luxury lease over a marked-up purchase. My online research has driven me towards the BMW X1, but I'll need to test them all myself before making a choice. This review already pretty much solidified my choice for the BMW (hate the bug look of the Benz, and prefer the X1 styling over the Q3). Now it's just a question of BMW vs Lexus (previously dd'd a Lexus IS350 F-Sport, and loved it).

Great comparison! I am looking at a used 2023 Q5 Prestige and a used 2023 X1 28i... only $4,000 US $ more for the bigger/plusher but less modern looking Audi Q5...which would you choose?

Ordered meanwhile my "BMW X1 sDrive 20i X-line" end of December (2022), but delivery-time ... January 2024 !!! (acc. to the dealer's BMW-system)(in Belgium).
The dealer could not give any particular reason for the delay. 😒🙄

How does the Mercedes-GLA compare to these two or would be the GLB be a better competitor? I like the BAM sound effect! What are the cameras you use on the driver's window and the windshield? The footage from the smaller one seems so crisp!

Went with the X1 - I live over in the states. More room inside (especially father who is 6'4" and has plenty of head room and legroom in the front seat and even rear) Screen controls no problem for me as 6'1" and can easily reach them and once you get used to them it's very easy to use the console. It also iced up here last week over Christmas and the car handled perfectly on the roads. Plenty of trunk room (both kids off at University) and we live in the city so a real nice car to get around in (NYC) and handles just fine. Took it on the highway the other day and no complaints. Did I like the Q3?, sure but practically for me living in NYC this was the right choice - space and not too big with a whole new redesign, Audi just tweaks but still same design.

I have never seen Thomas to be so excited about any car in a comparison and I have not yet driven the X1 so cannot really comment about the driving but it looks so much better than the previous iteration. I have a BMW 330i M Sport G20 and this is my 5th BMW and I think the steering is great so I cannot understand why Thomas goes on about it so much and criticises it.
Other reviewers do not criticise the steering like Thomas does.

Many thanks for making that comparison video. It was definitely bit of an eye-opener that the Q3 was so soundly beaten, apart from the steering and the physical air conditioning controls. Be that as it may. You mentioned initially, that despite the iX1 being in the same class as the Q3 that it would be more reasonable to compare the iX1 with the larger Q4.
With that in mind. It would be particularly interesting to see a comparison video between those two, as I gather that the way the battery in the iX1 has been shoe-horned into the one-size-fits-all chassis has entailed
1. that the back-bench seating is now so low that it makes for a rather uncomfotable seating even for an adult of average height. Is this true?
2. that it is no longer possible to adjust each individual seat in the back bench lengthwise. Again is that so?
Lastly, and in terms of refinement as I gather that it's an issue even for a Premium EV such as the VOLVO XC40 Recharge. Is there any discernable difference between the two cars in the noise, or rather whine, coming from the front axle electric motor?

a lot do that without consent, we do however have some that do that with consent, e.g. our language and theme channels
12:35 I have had a different experience with the Audi. I am 6 foot 3 or 191 cm and I had much more legroom in the Audi.
I also see that the front seat is pushed back quite a bit more than necessary in your case.
Also the doors in the rear are not made of hard plastics like in the BMW but are soft touch, just not very soft.
Beautiful, perfect review Thomas! When u spend so much money on a car u have to test all the aspects of the vehicle and u are the best on UA-cam. I have a question. How the brakes feel on each car? u haven't mentioned it. It's a pity BMW doesn't offer the M sport brakes anymore with the new X1. It's the only big miss. Happy new year!

Would love to see comparison on off road capability.Perhaps the most important comparison point since both are crossover SUVs.
Unpaved, muddy roads and light floods are the norm in my area, I would pick the one that can tackle this.
i would like to see more comfort features like right elbow rest. Most of the cars have right arm rest too low or too far back to reach. I think it is important for driving comfort and long drive.

As a BMW owner i'd like to choose the Audi as i can't be bothered with the BS that BMWs have these days.
You said that the X1 had more comfortable suspension but as i've found lately with a number of different BMW models their suspension is often a bit underdampened and gets even softer after a couple of years. Though i have to admit, as u mentioned Thomas, BMW have good powertrains that can make them feel good to drive.
Interestingly the inside door handles on the X1 look like the Q3's, in fact they're also similar to the CLA i just saw - why do manufacturers copy each other!?
But the clincher would be; Can you spec a heated steering wheel on the Q3 [UK market]?
Love my 2022 Q3! 10k miles and it is flawless. I have the largest engine which I recommend. Fuel economy is good on the highway but lacking in the city. My first Audi and certainly not my last.
Bmw x1 without doubt!! I had the x1 F48 I was really happy! Now I have the bmw serie’s 3 because I wanted more sport, but the new x1 U11 It’s wonderful!!🎉🎉🎉

I had a bmx x1 test drive in October when it is released with 20 inch alloys and m 23i. I liked the car a lot but i have bmw 5 series with adaptive suspension. The only downside was the suspension of x1 as i was feeling all the humps. I thought after 5 series it is like a downgrade for me and decided not to buy it. After watching your review, i am not sure if i need to give it a try again or wait for the new generation BMWs. I am also thinking to buy new 2023 GLC. If no new bmw release in 2023, i think glc will be a better option over X1
New 5 series is coming in 2023!
Current Mercedes interior quality is simply bad, both materials and assemble quality is far away from Audi and BMW. You will be disappointed with GLC compering to 5 series.
I agree the msport ride on 20” wheels is too fidgety. The msport is 14mm lower and higher spring rate hence the firm ride. The xline on 18 or 19” wheels is so much better
How about interior sound dampening. Which one is quieter inside when driving?
Super hard choice. Both are grate, but I think that maybe the Audi is starting to show its age a little bit?
I think I would choose the bmw, but I would definitely miss the climate unit and the virtual cockpit in the Audi.
I just test drove a 2024. I agree with all your points on why I don’t like it.
The engines chosen may play a big role because I had a completely opposite feeling with the X1 18d vs Q3 35 TDI. The X1 was too loud on acceleration and felt cheap, the suspensions were too firm giving me the feeling I was driving a Kia Picanto. With the Q3, it felt smooth, more premium, more welcoming. What do you think?

Personally I'd go for the Q3, because it's cheaper, probably has lower fuel consumption and is both internally and externally more stylish and elegant.
Congrats for the test, and for the ENG language. For telling the trouth for a 50min testing i would expect some "off-road testing" for those AWD vehicles.

@@autogefuehl I picked the Q3 over X1 because here in Canada the top Tecknik trim for the Audi was only $48K with pano roof, Sonos speakers, all the fun options.....BMW base price without the other options was $54K and if you want the paddle shifter its an extra $5k for it, which honestly should be given since there are no gear stick like Audi. So BMW in all is still much more expensive if you start adding limited options ending up being at least $7-8K more.
Q3 runs a bit cheaper because it doesnt need premium gas. BMW requires premium and prices on gas is not very fun when you pay more than $2.20 for premium 91.
I can't tell on BMW, but there are too much praise on the q3 than it is deserved. Done a test drive and it felt basic. That model was above 50k+tva and was lacking keyless entry and rear camera. You really need to go through all the options and pay attention to have a basic configuration.
I agree, we test drove a Q3 after having a few other Audi models, it felt extremely cheap and drove like a golf cart even compared to a basic A4

In which of the 2 is the driver seat wider to accommodate bigger (wider) legs? Also for which one is there more knee space for the driver? Which one offers the greater comfort for the driver? Does any of the 2 offer air suspension?

@@autogefuehl BMW a bit more comfortable than the Audi for the driver. There is no air suspension but adaptive one. As for seat width and knee space for the driver i could not find the info on the video.
Audi A4 gear stick got a lot of hate when it came, but in my opinion it is very nice. It is great place to rest your hand and in my opinion it even looks much better than these huge knob sticks (or small lever type gear sticks).
A4 shifter is electronic like the lever. Q3 still has mechanical shift.
the X1 that I ordered is at least 2 more months away. here in the US, BMW refuses to sell us the 3-series touring(wagon) which I absolutely love.... so I have no choice but to get the next best thing, the X1. I want a BMW that's small but with cargo capacity... so IMHO, the X1 is the closest thing to a proper 330i wagon. :)
I Agree is the BMW might have the better Drive suspension-and transmission but the Q3 is better looking so I went for the Q3. ..PS you always do a great job on the videos 👍really appreciate it

This is a very detailed and timely review! The Audi motor sounds like it's straining on acceleration compared to the X1. From your videos alone, the X1 seems more upscale and contemporary and designed and engineered better than the Q3. think your videos have calmed down my concerns of the X1 dual clutch transmission.

We love our ‘23 Q3 with the larger engine but, lots of hard plastic in the cabin - definitely not up to Premium car standards.

thanks for the review. If BMW NA treated people who buy cars as the customer and not the dealership, the choice would be easy given the poor gas mileage for the Q3. Now The Q3 is the only option left in this segment. Sadly inventory is so bad in NA, choices are essentially buy unseen/undriven and be treated like a sap.

No doubt I will go for the X1. We drive currently a X5 45e after several Audi, we really prefer the feeling and the comfort of the seats and the drive assist pro is far better. The only thing that was better on our previous a6 Allroad was the ventilated seats.
Now the kid are gone we are with my wife looking for a smaller car still super comfortable with good performance but easier to park in the city ; we are seriously thinking getting the new x1, either the BMW X1 xDrive30e 326ch or the IX1 full electric, difficult choice ! We are driving in avg 20 k km per year, 13 k km in / or around the city for which we charge the car exclusively at home and 7km on highways. Which version would you recommend? Thank you for your tips
