New state STAR program has drivers confused on smog tests

A new state program for smog emissions testers has phones ringing off the hook at area mechanic shops. Drivers said they have no idea what the program is, or how it affects their car tests.

My Test Only station wanted to charge me an extra $100 to pass my car. When I said I didn't have that much on me, he asked me how much I had. I said I only had $20 over what the smog check costed. He said OK he would make it pass. It barely passed (just like last year). I think he just said that it didn't pass to get the extra money to put in his pocket because the extra $20 didn't show up on the receipt. I wish I would have asked him to see the read out first, but he probably wouldn't have let me in the test bay anyway. It only took him about 5 minutes to retest it. I don't think they're supposed to do that at Test Only stations. I'm positive he ripped me off. I think the reason he tested another customer's car before he retested mine was so there would be no witness to what he did. Anyone know where to complain about crooked techs? Bureau of Automotive Repairs? I hope not because they put you on hold for two hours.

Back when I was doing it they had test only station and normal smog station it's the same test. And Now they don't even run them on the dyno endless it's 99 or older. They still want $65 plus no matter what type of smog it's is WTF. Star is just a rename for test only it's the same thing they do nothing special.
