I have had a check engine light on constant in my 03 Chevy PU with 347,000 miles for almost 2 years, we checked it with a code scanner and it read inefficient cat function. I was about to scrap the truck even tho it runs great because the repair was over $2,000 , with that many miles on the trans and motor it seemed like too much of a gamble. I tried Scotty's fix and ran a gallon of solvent thru the truck. The light did not go off until about 10 days later when I was running a regular tank of gas thru it, I could not believe it I went straight to a test center and passed with flying colors no codes!!! I am good for another 2 years.......unbelievable Thanks !!!
Thanks scotty , just did two transmission flushes on roomates car. You saved us like 300 bucks or more from your video on that. Ive also took many many of your recomendations on treatments and additives and stuff too. Thanks alot dude you are just like me or im like you since you are older. Love to help others not get scammed from mechanics and people in life...
Thank you! I cannot tell you how much your video helped me pass my emissions test. I took all of your advise (the paint thinner was a little too much for me, so I used a fuel additive, specifically for NOx emissions). I had failed my emissions test with a NOx GPM of 2.5548 (limit is 2.5). I was going to bring it to a mechanic, and then searched the Internet and found your video. First, I cleaned out my air filter box, and changed the air filter, I had changed my oil about 2 weeks prior, so I was in good shape. Next, my gas tank was at 1/4 full, so I added the fuel additive, and filled up my tank with the highest grade gasoline. I also noticed that my coolant was also low, so topped that off the reservoir. (I also cleared my ODBC readings from my car.) I then drove my car for 50+ miles to work the fuel through the system, and to heat up the cat. converter to help burn off all the emissions. I then drove right to the inspection area (lucky for me, there was only one car ahead of me), and was able to pass inspection with a NOx GPM of 1.4921. Your suggestions dropped my emission of NOx by 1.0629 GPM. I couldn't believe it. Thank you again for making this information available. You probably saved me a few hundred dollars in garage fees.
Living it Loving it Scotty. Inspired me to finally fix heater in my Yaris. (Blocked matrix). Surely if an air filter is dirty the engine will run rich not lean, as you said.(?) Keep on reving up........
My Corolla nearly failed the test last year, this year after watching this video and carrying out these measures it passed the test no problem! Thanks Scotty
Wow I needed emission service had no clue what that meant, searched on youtube and came across this video. I am a girl and I changed the all 8 spark plugs on my chevy and let me tell you the spark plugs were as black as dirt and worn out. My truck is running better now thanks alot scotty you saved me alot of money the mechanic wanted to charge me 300$ to fix this. You saved me a lot of money scotty you are the best.

I do exactly what Scotty recommends before I take my car in for the annual roadworthiness test and I haven't failed the emissions test so the advice is pretty much spot on.
that's the only one I use, I get it from a car paint store, it's the stuff they thin car paint with. I was shown this method by a German mechanic ages ago, and I just know it works, I'm not a chemist, and neither was the German.
I was just working on the same car yesterday. Try my trick "fixing bad catalytic converters" by typing that in the search on the opening page of the scottykilmer channel here in youtube. That often will work after driving a couple hundred of miles with the cleaner. But if not, replace the fuel injectors.
I think what happens is he sometimes is talking so fast that mouth gets ahead of brain and just reverses the thought process. It's like dyslexic talking instead of reading. He reversed some things in other vides as well, but over all has some good information!
Yeah, it's never good to drive any car outside its design parameters. There's no spec on "how dirty is too dirty" so we revert to the old rule: if you can see a light bulb through the filter, it's probably OK. Meanwhile, modern closed-loop (feedback) cars (say, after 1998) adjust fuel level to compensate for improver fuel-to-air ratio, caused by less-than-perfect air filter. The ultimate element of importance is the O2 sensor (s). It's a fundamental principal of closed loop systems that the feedback element is more important than the "amplifier" (the engine). If the feedback element is dorked, you're toast.
depends on the size of the tank. One gallon to ten gallons of gas mixture. Thinner doesn't hurt anything, gasoline already has over 10 percent ethanol in it at the pump. Mixed, it burns fine
Great video!!! I just learned a new one: on older vehicles (but still 96 & newer) don't disconnect the battery within like 7days or even longer before smogging- because the car computer needs time to run tests on the emissions components including the catalytic converter. One of the reasons I just failed smog (other was visual; patched hose) :| .
i just want to clarify the fuel injector part at 3:40 ...put a gallon of solvent in with ONLY 1/2 Gallon of gas? no more? so total of 1 1/2 gallons total material?

they can still work fine when rattling . As long as it passes the emissions test it would make it, here in texas a 95 is tested on a dyno and they will often pass when rattling
Scotty, any danger of putting too much fuel cleaner? The brand you showed can't be found, except as paint cleaning :-/ Lucas is recommended by some. Says use 5 oz per tank. Will 1 gal in 1/2 tank damage anything? Do we put another gallon after filling up tank before going for emissions, or just fill up gas with no additional cleaner?
Re took my smog check test today here in California. All I did to pass was drive on the highway for 30 miles before going, and keeping my engine on when I got there
Those guys in the USA are living the good life with only a simple emission pass (and safety test). Here in the Netherlands you have to pas a very strict MOT test. Your car has to be safe; things like brakes, tyres, seat belts, windows without cracks. But also clean emission, no sharp edges outside, right type of wheels, 10% or less rusted chassis, working speedo with light, not welded on subframes and no playing has to be found on any suspension part. It can actually run both rich or lean, depending upon what type of fuel injection or carburation system it has. Either way, a dirty filter can make you fail the test. I've seen cars with clogged filters trip running lean codes, AND trip running rich codes on different models.
@@myyoutubechannel3161 In that case, you would have to drive it for a certain amount of time or a certain number of miles for that readiness code, that is store in the car's computer, to go away. Then, you are good.
@@gregtthomasthanks for the information. i actually drove the car over 100 miles and it has been about 1 month and the check engine light has not come back on ..
Hey Scotty, If the air filter is clogged wouldn't that act the same as having an old fashioned choke on and make the car run rich rather than lean? Either way you would fail the emissions test.
prydonian460 only in an old carbureted engine. In an engine with a computer, even with a dirty air filter it will maintain the correct air/fuel ratio although it may hesitate and cut out at full throttle.
Emissions is a test you have to do every year to make sure your car is not polluting much. They measure the amount of exhaust gasses coming out of your tail pipe. If there are too many harmful gases coming out you fail.
DroidTech Trust me dude, I know. I paid that same amount for my "inspection" when I bought a car for $400. Had too many issues to even consider going the good boy route.
yes, it's all to save money for the inspector, and reap more profit from not having to buy and maintain a dyno. Nice to see the canadians are in the same leaking boat as we are here in Texas.
i have a question every time i step or slam my brake my gas meter go down i know it's not a big deal but it's just bother me. what can i do to fix it? thanks
Question, if the air filter is clogged and is blocking the air, how is this resulting in the car running lean? wouldn't it run rich due to there being less air to fuel?
depends on the type of fuel injection system the car has. Some will run rich, and some will run lean actually. Different sensors work different ways, but either way, It's a bad thing.
HA I failed today in a 1981 K5 Blazer today.. 350 moderately modified. This video is awesome.. I love that you tell me WHY a gap in a spark plug will make me fail emissions. I sir, will certainly being doing what you said in this video.
wait dude if the air is blocked then more fuel enters in the engine making it run richer and rich means more unburnt fuel in exhaust but scotty tells that it runs lean wich reduces the unburnt fuel making the engine run hot bu cleaner
my car passed it on the computer as both tests said pass but the aHole put ''tampered'' on it and wouldnt explain why to me.. i do admit i had old codes that i cleared after a tune up but the light never came back after i took it for a drive or during testing.
You could have been a stooge for the EPA, THECHOSENONE82 ,in which case he could have been fined $ ten thou. if he passed you. He probable also was an aHole.
I have a 2011 Mustang gt and I want to put an off road x pipe, which means I would get rid of the cats on the car. I live in New York, would I pass inspection?
Removing the cats is a stupid idea, adds pollution, has no impact in power and you don't pass emissions so you cont drive it on the road and you paid good money to make your car not legal to drive on the road.
The law in California keeps changing in a few years. Even we passed the smog check, their machines here were also checking some running parts of your car like ignition timing. Also aftermarket catalytic converter must be exempted from California's anti-tampering laws.

I checked all fuses and the pins on the OBD2 port and they all seem fine? Please help me thanks!
IN NZ THEY DO NOT TEST EMISSIONS LOL THEY ARE GREAT THEY ONLY LOOK AT IT I LOVE NZ INSURANCE IS RECOMMENDED BUT NOT ILLEGAL TO HAVE SO ITS LEGAL TO NOT HAVE INSURANCE
Insurance part is not smart. That is required for a reason. It will be a lot cheaper for a person to pay a $1000 deductible and have their insurance take the rest then it would be to spend upwards of $50,000-$100,000 for new vehicles in a bad accident
@@tsltyler no because if you do not have insurance and you crash, you have to pay all the damages to the person who you hit if it was your fault instead of insurance paying if you do not have insurance
William Walters and if your car has fuel injectors a bad mass air flow sensor can make it run lean. usually shows up on the scanner ( God Forbid you have a more serious issue like a fuel pump starting to go bad or clogged fuel filter) , as po171 or po174. however , a weak fuel pump can ALSO make the engine run lean and can trip the same codes.
2003 chevy Silverado still won't pass for god damn emissions. Changed EVERY PART that was throwing codes and still cannot pass or get a sticker! Total bs!
Take the fucker to a real mechanic. You back yard mechanics act like you are specialist at everything but in reality do not know shit about diagnostics Just parts replacers Fucking Morons.
Jonathan--- that is not true Vehicle OBD 2 Standards are slightly different in Europe,Africa,S.A. Australia for example, but the systems, codes & emission standards are much the same. Not a USA issue.
cool video Scotty. My mother lives in CA. And she is to old to walk but her car wont pass smogg. I hope I can get her to listen to me over the phone so I can tell her your tricks. Thanks and have fun!
Hi Scotty, I think you are a Mechanical Wiz. Keep on rocking, Man... I have a Ford Windstar van, 2003, that has the check engine light on. It's been on and off for almost a year now. Most times when I drive hard for 20, 30 minutes, it comes off. Also, have had my CV clicking for more than a year. Anyway, few days ago I had an oil change, disconnected the battery, then drove around for about 10 minutes, and went to do an emissions test,
This is why I'm glad my state doesn't require inspections. My safety stuff is all working perfectly fine, but my CEL has been on for years. The EGR system is all plugged up and I can't be bothered to replace the whole EGR system just to chase down that CEL light.
You can do that, but that makes it rather strong, and of course bypasses the fuel injectors so they don't get cleaned also. But if cat is REALLY bad, that can clean it out faster.
both would make it fail the test, but they are pretty much different codes. the knock sensors go bad all the time on nissans, and the egr systems often can be cleaned out as in my latest video "fixing EGR low flow"
Thanks Scotty! I have an 88 Toyota Pickup with about 35k on a rebuilt engine. The last two times I had it smogged I had to change the Cat both times at a cost of around $160 each time. I bought a gallon of laquer thinner this time, poured about 80% of it into a little more than half a tank and drove it on the freeway for 70 miles. Took it to the Star Smog station and it passed! I resigned myself to having to buy a new Cat each time, but no more! Thanks!!
I just did it for my brother's 1998 Lexus GS300 last week. Granted I changed the oil, air filter, and put in some fresh coolant. 80% of a gallon of laquer thinner into a half tank of gas and I drove it 75 miles. Went to the smog check and it passed. It didn't pass a couple of days before. I'm telling all my friends about this trick!

@@gregtthomas get a real job scumbag
Hey Scotty, If the air filter is clogged wouldn't that act the same as having an old fashioned choke on and make the car run rich rather than lean? Either way you would fail the emissions test.
My exact thought
That is my understanding unless the computer makes some kind of overcompensation.
prydonian460 only in an old carbureted engine. In an engine with a computer, even with a dirty air filter it will maintain the correct air/fuel ratio although it may hesitate and cut out at full throttle.
I'm thinking that Scotty is right. That the sensors detect a lack of air and send the signal to the ECU to reduce the fuel level accordingly.
30 years working on cars, I have never had a car fail due to a dirty air filter..
I live in Florida... what are emissions?
Annoying bullshit NY residents like myself have to go through every year. Can't wait to move down to my girlfriend's hometown in Florida.
If they came out of your arse, you'd know.
As soon as they legalize weed florida here I come
cars in the US in most states are checked for excessive pollution during the yearly state inspection required by law
yes, it's all to save money for the inspector, and reap more profit from not having to buy and maintain a dyno. Nice to see the canadians are in the same leaking boat as we are here in Texas.
i have a question every time i step or slam my brake my gas meter go down i know it's not a big deal but it's just bother me. what can i do to fix it? thanks
generally that's a bad sending unit in the gas tank, or a loose wire that shorts out when moved
Scotty Kilmer
Oh I see. Thank you!
With a Carburetor it would run rich, with Fuel Injection it may start out rich
& be driven lean by the PCM on O2 Correction.
Personally, I just rather live where there isn't an inspection, one less thing to deal with
+TechNerd1300 Try China where you would have to wear masks outside b/c of how bad the air quality is.
+skyline There's more to that than just cars, look at the back of almost everything you own.
+TechNerd1300 I know that, but the point is we sometimes take laws for granted.
+skyline That's almost how bad Los Angeles was getting at one time. They were famous for the visible brown layer of smog seen from a distance.
Maryland don't have inspection is just 1 time and property taxes on a car
sometimes it will work, but if you try that, then drive it fast for half an hour on the highway to help it clean stuff out.
HA I failed today in a 1981 K5 Blazer today.. 350 moderately modified. This video is awesome.. I love that you tell me WHY a gap in a spark plug will make me fail emissions. I sir, will certainly being doing what you said in this video.
wait dude if the air is blocked then more fuel enters in the engine making it run richer and rich means more unburnt fuel in exhaust
but scotty tells that it runs lean wich reduces the unburnt fuel making the engine run hot bu cleaner
I was thinking the same thing....Scotty made a mistake.
I didn't realize John Lennon was a mechanic. And alive.
He just needed Yoko out of his new life

my car passed it on the computer as both tests said pass but the aHole put ''tampered'' on it and wouldnt explain why to me.. i do admit i had old codes that i cleared after a tune up but the light never came back after i took it for a drive or during testing.
You could have been a stooge for the EPA, THECHOSENONE82 ,in which case he could have been fined $ ten thou. if he passed you. He probable also was an aHole.
I go to an auto paint store, and buy the thinner they use to thin car paint. The brands often change, but that's how you buy it.
Im in AZ & I appreciate this.
Yes, I've used it, a gallon of thinner to a tank of gas in that case.
what if you have a plastic gas tank tho wouldn't that destroy it?
my car's check engine light is not coming on at all. i live in California. will that cause it to fail its smog test?
+john clark technically it will if the tester is an ass
Scotty Kilmer 😂
john clark a sanctuary state mayby if your car or truck spoke spanish it would pass
chances are the bulb is burnt out because the light has been on for a long time..... or someone disabled it to hide the problem
@@scottykilmer Not necessarily, Mr Scotty K, If light is not "coming on at all" then bulb could be out. That will always fail test.
I have a 2011 Mustang gt and I want to put an off road x pipe, which means I would get rid of the cats on the car. I live in New York, would I pass inspection?
+john evangelista NO
No because NY is a awful Libtard state
john evangelista just get a hot smogg
Removing the cats is a stupid idea, adds pollution, has no impact in power and you don't pass emissions so you cont drive it on the road and you paid good money to make your car not legal to drive on the road.
be happy, you can have one MIL not ready and still pass. But you can have zero trouble codes
I get mine at scottoday paint store in houston. Most auto paint stores should sell it.
The law in California keeps changing in a few years. Even we passed the smog check, their machines here were also checking some running parts of your car like ignition timing. Also aftermarket catalytic converter must be exempted from California's anti-tampering laws.
shop line solvent? what product is that, another name please.
Google is your friend
Google's no help. Paint thinner' brush cleaner, acetone, lacquer thinner & Xylene but nothing with the JT501 nomenclature.
@@Nuprem1zpretty weird huh it’s probably a discontinued product because… it works and Scotty probably exposed it

Hi Scotty, I have a 2001 Dodge Stratus that runs fine but when I took it to get emissions it said I have to complete the '' drive cycle''. How is that done ? Thanks
+Hickory Loudermilk drive it on the highway and hour and then give it a day or two of city driving. Pray it resets, cause if not, you have a hard to pinpoint failure making it not complete, like a bad cat
Thank you for your advices, i applied them on my old Russian car and i passed the emission test.
lacquer thinner should work. go to any auto paint store and buy the thinner they use to thin car paint with
car is headache
@Scotty Kilmer I need help my car passing the emissions test it passed visual and all that other stuff but I took it to two smog check stations already and neither both of they're stations can't connect to read the computer on my car I drove it for 180 miles and it completed the monitors why can it work on my OBD2 scanner but they're (computers/machines) can't connect to read my car? I checked all fuses and the pins on the OBD2 port and they all seem fine? Please help me thanks!
if your scanner reads it, odds theirs can't because of some glitch in their software. Try another station and pray
i need help getting my 78 el camino to pass. uhhggggg
Scotty Kilmer
if its a late 90s chrystler have them just run it. esp gen 2 machines wont read the chrystlers unless its in the test.
Steps to do this:
1) Buy a VW.
This concludes the needed steps.
no idea, mine is from an auto paint store, the stuff they thin car paint with, perhaps go to one in your area.
NO, burning oil doesn't make the sniffer fail. unburned gasoline does that. You should move to texas, they only do sniffer tests.
Pro tip: find a friend who has an address in a county that doesn’t do emission, register there, done forever
And then what
@@kevin11vin18 nothing it’s registered in a county that doesn’t require emissions lmao.
how about changing the fuel filter and gas cap??
Nah throw in some redex and drive the car hard for awhile and your fuel tank and filters will be clean.
IN NZ THEY DO NOT TEST EMISSIONS LOL THEY ARE GREAT THEY ONLY LOOK AT IT I LOVE NZ
INSURANCE IS RECOMMENDED BUT NOT ILLEGAL TO HAVE SO ITS LEGAL TO NOT HAVE INSURANCE
Insurance part is not smart. That is required for a reason. It will be a lot cheaper for a person to pay a $1000 deductible and have their insurance take the rest then it would be to spend upwards of $50,000-$100,000 for new vehicles in a bad accident
@@tsltyler no because if you do not have insurance and you crash, you have to pay all the damages to the person who you hit if it was your fault instead of insurance paying if you do not have insurance
go to any auto paint store, and buy the lacquer thinner they use to thin car paint with for oil based paints.
My truck barely passed emissions at 2500rpm. The limit was 2000 something but my truck had 1935 on it. So close yet so great.
a dirty air filter will make your engine run rich not lean
William Walters and if your car has fuel injectors a bad mass air flow sensor can make it run lean. usually shows up on the scanner ( God Forbid you have a more serious issue like a fuel pump starting to go bad or clogged fuel filter) , as po171 or po174. however , a weak fuel pump can ALSO make the engine run lean and can trip the same codes.
William Walters whichever, all that matters is that you can fail this test with a dirty air filter
Rao Tran fuel pressure test
if you have maf sensor and stuff filter should not do anything. and yes, in theory it would run rich like with carbureted engines if filter is cloged
good thing I live in Florida lol
Damn right
2003 chevy Silverado still won't pass for god damn emissions. Changed EVERY PART that was throwing codes and still cannot pass or get a sticker! Total bs!
Take the fucker to a real mechanic. You back yard mechanics act like you are specialist at everything but in reality do not know shit about diagnostics Just parts replacers Fucking Morons.
Jonathan--- that is not true
Vehicle OBD 2 Standards are slightly different in Europe,Africa,S.A.
Australia for example, but the systems, codes & emission standards
are much the same. Not a USA issue.
cool video Scotty. My mother lives in CA. And she is to old to walk but her car wont pass smogg. I hope I can get her to listen to me over the phone so I can tell her your tricks. Thanks and have fun!
put a high temp thermostat in it and replace the crank sensor and pray that fixes it. But CV joints do not make check engine lights come on

The EGR system is all plugged up and I can't be bothered to replace the whole EGR system just to chase down that CEL light.
any lacquer thinner used to thin auto paint on cars will work.
You can do that, but that makes it rather strong, and of course bypasses the fuel injectors so they don't get cleaned also. But if cat is REALLY bad, that can clean it out faster.
try removing the egr valve and clean all the holes that feed it, espeically the one going into the engine intake
both would make it fail the test, but they are pretty much different codes. the knock sensors go bad all the time on nissans, and the egr systems often can be cleaned out as in my latest video "fixing EGR low flow"
Thanks!!
Can anyone else confirm the laquer thinner works? If it does work, then it's probably the best smog tip out there.
I'm telling all my friends about this trick!
you can't really block that all up as there are drain holes and that's a lot of space that would require water and detergent into, But you could try.
