    When I worked for Sears, almost every time one came in for leaking, it always started with a dirty filter that would build excessive ice. The second thing was a dirty coil. The gaps usually don't cause a problem unless the coil(s) are dirty enough to cause negative pressure. This also exacerbates the water back flow problem. Having the covers off causes Improper airflow through the unit too. If all else fails, wipe the dirt from around the drain area and put a thin coat of silicone "grease" not caulk around the edges of the open area around the drain hose connector. Rarely they needed refrigerant work or compressors. Fan motors need a little maintenance once in a while too. (You may agree or disagree with me, but you can't work on this kind of equipment ranging from consumer to industrial size over 44 years without at least a little success in troubleshooting. I will say that you should never stop learning). Thanks

      Humidity has been crazy this year, especially in my big garage shop. I actually had to take apart the router lift and increase some tolerances because it got completely jammed up. Dryest place has been the basement, where the dehumidifier runs 12 hours every night.

    My favorite dehumidifiers have a tiny pump inside with a 20 foot long hose that I can place anywhere, including above the level of the dehumidifier itself. No buckets to empty.

    Surely the water is meant to go through the small hole on the right if you want it to collect in the internal container? The threaded spout on the left is if you want the water to be piped directly out of the unit (that's why there's a hole in the side casing) with a short hose, but otherwise should be closed

    Matthias Wandel, PLEASE check the models of your dehumidifiers for any recalls. Over the past 5 years or so, there have been at least 10 million dehumidifiers that have been recalled, from pretty much every single brand. (The hazard: catching fire!)

    I almost bought a new dehumidifier today for $180 to replace my DeLonghi. It used to leak every now and then. To stop that from happening, whenever I emptied the bucket I would clean the drain holes with a cue tip. That worked for 2 years. However, over the last 2 days it started leaking almost every time I used it. I thought it is probably finished. I watched your video and realized I had nothing to lose by opening it up. It was surprisingly easy to take off both covers. I saw that the were covered in cat hair. (The cat died 2 years ago!). I spent an hour carefully vacuuming and cleaning the unit with a shop vac. I closed it up and it’s working like new. Thanks.

    I've run into the same problem and discovered it was leaking both due to slime buildup in the tray and surface tension drawing the water up and over the side instead of into the bucket. Mine has a timer to remind you to clean the filter every few weeks, which is helpful, but it will still leak now and then. I left the screws off of the case so I can easily clean it out when needed. I've also tried bleach in the tray but didn't see any clear results. These units are really cheaply made. I like your idea to block the gap between condensers to improve air flow. Thanks!

    I am in hvac and its either too cold in the room where the unit is or its low on charge. they shouldnt freeze up that bad or the coils need to be cleaned it may look bad on the outside but could be clogging up in the fins also, we service units like that all the time, and most of the time its dirty coils lack of air flow but sometimes they have a leak. Try cleaning the coils first though

    I have a project for you Matthias, that should be right up your alley: I know you like recycling old appliances. I've seen videos where people build an air compressor out of an old fridge compressor. I like the idea because I hate noise (plus my neighbors are too close to my shop and I don't want to annoy them). I'd like to see a Matthias take on this because none of the other videos seem to address one problem... A refrigerator compressor is bathed in oil. How do you keep oil from spraying out with the air, (which would be a problem for spray painting or media blasting) and how do you keep the compressor working if it ISN'T bathed inn oil?

    • @erlendse
      @erlendse 7 років тому

      You can get oil-seperators for compressed air.
      As far as bringing the oil back to the compressor, I don't know.
      Shouldn't be too hard to find a useable oil to refill the compressor with.

    • @Spott07
      @Spott07 7 років тому +3

      There are oil separators/line dryers that can be used to keep the oil from getting into your airbrush. If you want to do full-sized spray-painting or sand blasting, a refrigerator compressor will leave you disappointed.
      Common refrigerator compressor pumps are kinda small, light-duty units. They have a built-in motor, which is rather under-powered. If you want something that can generate decent pressure, you need a larger pump that can be connected to a much larger motor.
      A very effective solution is a specific type of older car air-conditioner compressors that have a separate oil sump, although they're designed to bleed a little bit of oil into the bearing and then the A/C circuit. When mounted upright, a simple modification eliminates the oil bleeding. The most common manufacturer of this style was York, although there are many high-quality clones/re-branding. I found one made by Eaton at the salvage yard for $20. I hooked it to a 1HP motor and can get 150PSI at 1.7CFM, and scale those numbers however you like with a output pressure regulator. The factory literature seems to indicate it can pump up to 225PSI, and run up to 2500RPM, with a 6, 9, or 10 cubic inch displacement. It's not super large, but it's only $20, can you really complain? Also, you can reverse the head on the compressor and turn it into a pretty effective vacuum pump.
      Lots of off-road vehicle guys like to run this compressor off their engine accessory belts (as they were originally designed, anyways) for on-trail tire pressure adjustments and air-tool operation. Just google "York Compressor" for lots of pages and resources related to this specific style of A/C compressor pump.

    About a month ago my 8000btu window AC frost up solid. I took it outside and sprayed everything down hard with a garden hose. Let it dry good and its ran perfect for weeks now. I'd try cleaning it really well. I thought i killed it because i drilled a hole in the bottom to drain the water early in the season...i was getting a slime mold factory every few weeks and was sick of pulling it and cleaning it constantly. The hole works well, but i probably am losing some efficiency. I see newer units have a rubber plug in the bottom.
    Just buy a heat pump hot water heater ==="free" hot water and it cools the area around it like a window ac.

    Level is a common mistake homeowners with portable dehumidifies. That's because most people think their floor is level and basements are almost never level to allow any water to drain water into the sump pump. This problem is compounded by the design of the case. There is no good level top to put a bullseye level on. I don't need to dehumidify my house but if I did I would mount a level on the top epoxied in place. Also clean the drip tray with vinegar to remove the mold and sludge.

    Fridge DHs are ok as long as the temperature is fairly high the better ones have a small tray with a float valve and a pump( car window wash pump) when the water reaches the float valve the pump starts and the water is pumped down a long tube usually at least 10' to a n outlet (Dri-eaz1200) . In cold weather the better type of DH are the ones that use something like a silica gel wheel that filters out the water rotates and is heated to push the water out. There is a third type where the room is heated up to get the water in suspension then the air is pushed out of the area/room with a fan and ducting the the cycle starts again

    Usually when coils freeze up like that on a dehumidifier it means the freon is low. They are notorious for leaking freon. When properly charged the cold low pressure return line should feel somewhat chilly when returning to the compressor. If it is room temperature or warm then there is not enough refrigerant in the system. When that happens part of the coil Ices up because all of the refrigerant evaporates before it gets through the entire coil which makes that part super cold and the other part of the coil does not get cold. The evaporator coil should get cold but not frozen and sweat continuously dribbling water into the pan. Since it is defrosting quickly and dumping all of the water it collected at one time I think that is part of your problem. The extra hole under the evaporator shouldn't really be there in my experience because if you wanted to connect a garden hose to your fitting none should be allowed to go into the bucket it's weird that there is a second hole in the drip pan. Good video though!

    • @SammytheBammy1
      @SammytheBammy1 2 роки тому

      I have a different model (Nantucket Breeze NB73) which also has that "extra" hole in the drip pan. Not sure what its function is. Perhaps it's a "safety overflow" if the main drain gets clogged.
      I am having the same issue. Water drains from the main drain, BUT it also drips from the extra hole. Since I don't want to have to use the bucket and have to empty it, I'm wondering if I should just plug that extra drain hole. But then perhaps my unit is freezing up and doing a major water dump during the defrost cycle, so the drain pan would overflow and there would be water all over the place? Comments? Help!

    I always enjoy your videos, they are very informative and I marvel at your ingenuity! I am also very interested in learning more abut timelapse photography with the RPi. Can you share just a little about how (or what software you use) to convert your RPi images to a video? Thank you so much!

    Dessicant dehumidifier instead compressor based will probably give you lower running costs, avoid ice ups and operate in a wider temperature range.

    Matthias Wandel looks like it might have been some air flow from the spinning impeller fan coming through that opening in front of threaded drain fitting that was blowing the water around and keeping it from draining right.

    Your floor might not be level. Just tilt the whole unit forward a few degrees.

    On mine, the fins needed major cleaning, so the dirt caught the moisture and wicked it outside the drip pan.

    Maybe I can help. I had the same problems with my Swan dehumidifier. Because I let the filter get really clogged up and dirty, some of this dust and detritus made it's way into the fins and down to the drip tray which was really shallow anyway, and capillary action was allowing the drip tray to overflow on the sides. It only took a little bit of gunk because the channels along the tray were only about 1mm, so any gradient on the floor would also exacerbate the leak, which is why they say to put on a level floor. I had to just clean the drip tray under the fins which was really difficult to get to and then the problem went away. I ran a nail brush over all the fins also as they were a little bent out of shape and needed gunk taken off them. Basically dust is your enemy. You should check the filter every 10 times you empty the tank I would say. More if you are doing woodwork or plastering around it.

    Try to put some thread at end of pipe and hang it over bottle. Because of the capillary effect the water will flow down the thread into the container.

    Another vote for the low refrigerant diagnosis. I had this exact same unit and condition, and the fix was to add refrigerant via a saddle tap which is available on eBay. By a certified A/C technician, of course. ;) This fix has lasted several years so far, and I'm ready for the next time it acts up. Better than buying a new one every few years simply because the refrigerant very slowly leaks out. Which is more ecologically friendly? Buying three different dehumidifiers or adding a few ounces of refrigerant occasionally?

    I paused at 0:47 to read the text, and I really thought for a second there that that was a bottle of some kind of alcohol stashed in the back of your dehumidifier.

    Freezing Coolers:
    depending on the cooling agent (i hope its R134) let a little bit in the gas stage out (there is always a venting(; -screw to also reload with coolant if necessary). but home gamers should not do that. (Kappa) they are supposed to buy a new thermo-sensing switch (most often by "Ranco" , take care what temperature area they are designed for...).

    If you install a trap it will not overflow. What's happening is when the fan is running it is causing a vacuum, so the water will not drain, causing it to overflow. A trap will not allow a vacuum

    Lack of good air flow, keeping the coil "warm" will cause freezing over, possible low gas charge, OR worn compressor with low pressure will also cause freezing,..

    drill a small hole in the bottom of the spout and attack some string to the hole - I have done this to 2 machines ive owned as well as AC units i have had in the past

  • @TheDeeretractor
    @TheDeeretractor 7 років тому

    One reason it is iced up is because the coil are dirty. Because my AC unit iced up and once I clean the coil so far I hasn't has any problem. You will be surprise at how much dirt that get into the coils.

    Looks like that's the option to ad a hose to the outside, if you're not using the hose, there should be a right angle hose barb with a retaining nut, much like you find on washing machines, that would direct the water down more reliably, i'm guessing the other hole is an overflow if the normal outlet gets blocked.

    Don't "fix it", just scavange the parts and make a wooden dehumidifier... the wood solution is always the "Woodgear" way to go: finger joint casing dehumidifier.

    I had the same problem years ago , I could not figure it out . so I put a large pan under the dehumidifier and used a small sump pump for a boat to pump the water to a drain when the water got over 1 inch deep with float switch activation .. that was the best I could come up with ,, most of us don't have a analytical brain like you do . I certainly don't anyways

  • @dcpicks

    I have had this problem in the past. I found that by using the lower fan speed the dehumidifier would not ice up. Apparently, the higher speed pushed too much moist air through and would ice up. Just a thought.

    • @matthiaswandel
      @matthiaswandel  7 років тому

      I found mine is less likely to ice up at higher fan speeds. With enough air flow, enough condensation happens that the coils don't get as cold.

  • @kitchencone

    You added caulking to make a low point for the tube water to run off.
    Instead, couldn't you have made a "gravity break" by cutting away some of the plastic that is supporting the tube? Isolate the tube by making sure that no part of the supporting plastic is anywhere near as low as the tube.

  • @gregfeneis609

    I don't think the evaporator is supposed to ice up. Either you're not getting enough warm air flowing through the evaporator, or the expansion valve is stuck.
