  • The Azores is a remote archipelago that sits right on top of the Mid-Atlantic Ridge. Everything converges here, from ocean currents and migrating animals to tectonic plates. This oasis of diverse habitats was the perfect place for scientists onboard OceanXplorer to study both open ocean megafauna and deep-sea ecosystems. Filipe Porteiro joined the mission to lend his decades of expertise to both teams, and to help forge another vital connection, between science and policy.

I absolutely commend Dr. Filipe Porteiro for his incredible research on the Portuguese deep-sea. It is crucial to understand the dynamics of these ecosystems, not only to maintain their well-being, but also to guarantee a more sustainable future. And we have such unique and fascinating local biodiversity.
Thank you OceanX for aiding the Portuguese marine science research, wherever it may be! As a Portuguese marine biology student, I aspire to get in touch with you all some day!

Such a magical place. Many thanks to the scientists and the government working to save it. If only the rest of the world would follow. I am 73 and have long since lost count of the flora fauna which has become extinct in my lifetime or the decimated once places. I fear for my grandchildren.
