The Mysterious Lifecycle of Eels That Science Still Does Not Know

  • Did you know that when eels decide its time to mate, their stomachs dissolve and their reproductive organs form for the first time in its place? These creatures are complex, which is why scientists are eager to understand their unique life cycles.
Researchers have tracked eels to the Sargasso Sea where they are likely spawning, but we are still missing pieces to the puzzle. There is footage showing adult European eels sticking close to the sea floor on their long journey across the ocean, so the eels could be mating and hatching at deeper depths, below 500 meters, which are difficult to study.
Understanding the how eels spawn is important because they are a popular food around the world. To keep up with the demand, an eel smuggling ring has formed on the black market, which is a detriment to the wild eel population.

The theory about Sargasso Sea is almost 150 years old and was scientifically proved not that long ago. (Freud did his experiments with eels in his youth. People figured everything out a little bit later)

I did some digging into this, apparently eels of most kinds including the glass eels we eat come from the wild. The reason why it's so hard to study them is because some eels are hermaphrodite and some are born male and when they mate they turn female. Unlike a lot of species of fish they can multi-produce instead of breeding once then dying off, they breed continuously. Japanese studies have figured out only 10% on breeding commercially because of the difficulty of raising them to maturity. The liquid egg and multiple breeding patterns make it hard to study.

What’s even crazier is that they found out that the European and American eel can hybridise. Two species from different parts of the world somehow managed to get together and produce offspring in the wild. That hybrid would be the rarest fish in the world due to it being completely natural and only a few individuals would exist.
