I hope you have better luck than I in making shavings in advance. Even when I vacuum sealed the bag, after a week or so the fatwood had lost it's "magic" of burning after a pass or two of a fero rod. Other people have reported the same results. Just make sure and try making shavings, let it set for a week or so and try lighting it before going on a trip. When left in stick form fatwood lasts for many years. A piece I have has been outside in the snow, rain, heat, etc. for 5 years and when I scrape some in a pile, one or two strikes with a fero rod and I have flame. I just keep a few sticks with me. Thanks for a well done video, and keep on hunting!
I like that... _"Shut up bird! Shut up!"_ Hey... I talk the the animals, birds, etc. Keeps me sane and feeling like someone is there. I have a camp not far in the woods by my place where there's a grouse that shows up most visits. She likes bugging me a little, so to do my work, I have a stick with roots on it (looks like a claw) to keep her pushed back, so she won't lunge at me. She does eventually go away from me to eat and take care of her feathers, etc, then finally leaves the area. I do talk to here as if she's a person. Helps keep me calm and not go insane. Keeping her pushed back and talking to her helps me avoid killing her. She is a beauty and almost like having a friend around to keep me company.
Went yesterday got lucky with a few good pieces,, chuffed for my first hunt , and yes it was good as it turned into an unintentional 3 hour hike , loved it and I’ll be stocking up as it was like a gold mine now I know exactly what to do n look for
I've not been successful finding fatwood in wild yet. With these tips I might be successful next trip out. And your humour is lifting... That bird! Lol!!! So thanks on both fronts 👍
You canbuy it at Lowe's, Home Depot, even Walmart. $4 for 5 lbs. and it is processed into sticks. It works just as good as any found in the wild. Look in the fireplace aisle at the store.
@@csh6220 That takes away all the fun and meaning of wanting to learn bushcraft skills in the first place. It also doesn't help much in a survival situation.
Great video and very informative, thanks for sharing. I too suffer pretty badly with my mental health and I agree 100% the best thing to help is getting out and about. Something so calming about being in the woods and nature. All the best bud, thanks
Just subbed to ur channel, so good to know the wonderful people from where we came are out scouting the woods for fatwood etc. Being from English German & French descent i love keeping up on what my peeps over there are up to. Seems yall find the cool stuff first. Thanks for sharing the info & all.
Survival Mindset Thank you :) there’s always an element of luck involved with finding fatwood but knowing where to look can really better your chances 🙏🏻 thank you for watching
Another great video! Really enjoying this channel! Keep it up and you'll be doing a colab with MCQ for sure ;) Massive kudos for talking about mens mental health, its a very important matter that does not get anywhere near the attention it should do. Stay safe

Really good, interesting & informative video 👏 very good for a beginner for me (I hope to find some or my first fatwood verysoon 🤣) after watching your video 😀 Take care & Stay safe my friend 🙂🙏👍
I've seen videos where they say the fatwood is near the base (stump area) of the tree, but I found it half way up a tree in the core of the trunk of a tree that fell over in a big storm over a year ago.
Yea that is entirely possible, the resin will find its level if gravity is working against it. In your case the tree had fallen over 🥰 thanks for this insight 🙏🏻👍🏻
First video I have watched, I can always tell when I have stumbled on a good bushcraft channel, don’t go risking your life for a bit of FAT WOOD! shut up bird 🤣 & very informative, good content Ben 👌🏻I have now subscribed 👍🏻
I was on our worked bog today taking bark from exposed tree trunks for tannin dye. They would have been part of pine forests a few thousand years ago. Now I'm wondering if fatwook survives in bogs!

My friend u are exactly right , the tree does protect itself from insects and fungi with sap (terpene), why else would the tree produce this compound to the damaged area. Trees are smarter than we understand, study the venus flytrap plant then i bet u will agree. Thanks for the video. Also did u know pine needle tea has the complete vitamin c complex and has 4 times the amount of vit. C than an orange? Great tree.
