How do you manage the urge to buy things you don't need? Share what has helped you in the comments below! Thanks for tuning in!

I manage my buy-em urges by walking away from the shop or online page for at least 2 weeks. After that time, if I still think I really NEED whatever it is, then I'll go back and buy it. The funny thing is that after two weeks, 9.5 times out of 10, I don't want it any more. Even funnier, very often I can't ever remember what it was I wanted. Thank you for an excellent channel and excellent advice.

Sometimes I watch videos of other people shopping, (especially thrift shopping because it's more like a treasure hunt and that is the itch I need to scratch). That can fill my craving for novelty and discovery without me needing to go shopping myself. Thrift shopping doesn't cost a lot of money but it's still stuff I don't need and the storage space issue is sometimes more of a deterrent than the money issue. Going through my existing wardrobe (or records or makeup, etc) can remind me how much I already have that I haven't even worn or listened to yet.

I cleared all my autofilled details and one-click and paypal info from all my usual sites. The break in between seeing something shiny online and having to go and physically get my debit card to input the details is a long enough pause for me to go "wait, do I really need this?"
I also make a list on my phone of everything I would have added to cart, and then in a few weeks I come back and look and go "wow, look at all this junk I would have bought" - I still get the window shopping experience without spending

I have made a decision to stop watching unboxing and haul videos. After adding up my receipts for taxes I was shocked at how many impulse buys I made as a result of watching these!

Wow.. I felt that.. luxury hauls are fun to watch, but if your not careful & realistic about your status you could wind up out here bad... I watch but I know my limits & I'm a thrifting queen. Been so since Jr high. I have a swag that can shut down the highest paid in the room. Simple, Chic... Less is more!!! I know who I am .... The Lord keeps me in check therefore no need to break the bank.... It's a Vibe lol💋👠🙏💪💯🤦❤️

I find those types of videos quite obscene, they are also akin to boasting. They contain nothing that adds to my life, and are such a waste of time.

I don't watch those anymore either. It's like watching someone opening presents and you get nothing. It left me with feelings of being inadequate when I have no reason to feel that way.

I might be weird but for me , haul videos can help me to NOT shop. I can scratch the itch of wanting to see new things without having to actually buy them myself. But the ones I watch are thrift hauls not luxury stuff. Luxury stuff does not interest me.

I only buy thing that I've been depriving myself of for any years, Dried out and old makeup, better skin products for my face, new sheets and pillows for better sleep, a new wallet to replace the one I've had for twenty years that's been falling apart. I'm 71 years old. Now I feel I owe it to myself to buy some things to make me happy. When my husband was alive the focus seemed to be on his needs. Now I need to take care of me.

I’m turning 60 this year and I too have focused on family instead of myself in the past. After decluttering and Swedish Death Cleaning of my home and storage, I have made room for new clothing and furniture for me. When we align our budget and hence our spending with our values, we don’t feel remorse or regret.

It took me a long time to realize that I don't need to keep up with my friends. Most of them are in debt over thier head, have filed for bankruptcy, and are anxious about the future. I am debt free and don't need things to make me happy. I have the cash available to travel if I want to and for unexpected expenses. I make under $40,000/year. This channel has helped my journey immensely!

  • @laurahills6109

Thanks for this excellent video. Here are three more tips: First, I go through my closets, drawers, shelves, and cupboards regularly to shed unwanted and unneeded possessions. Doing so helps me to stay organized but also makes me confront purchases that didn't work out for me, which in turn helps me to be much more intentional about future purchases. Second, I delay making purchases whenever I can. I put items I want on a wish list or into an online shopping cart and make myself wait at least a few days before buying them. Often, I forget about the item or decide when I return to it that the purchase isn't necessary. And, when I do decide to pull the trigger, I know that it is a considered purchase, not an impulsive one. Finally, I shop with a definite plan. I assess my clothing and accessories at the start of each season and make a list of items that are tired and that need repair or replacing, as well as new items that would help me to round out my wardrobe. Then, I shop with an eye toward making those specific purchases. That strategy helps me to stay on track but also, over time, it has helped me to develop beautiful, carefully-curated, high-functioning wardrobe.

Thanks so much for these tips! We were taught at a young age not to try to do what everyone else is doing. You can only run one household and that is all. My father taught us to live with some "common sense." If there is two incomes coming into the home, life off of one and save the other. That way, you will always have some reserves if anything arises. Basically, like you said, people just need to learn to live within their means and stop trying to do what you know you are not capable of doing at the time. Thanks for sharing!

If I have a goal - a trip to England, a family member's upcoming birthday, a car to replace my clunker - it helps me say no to things I don't really need. And then when I am able to travel or pay for a surprise party for my mom, I feel such a sense of accomplishment and it makes the "sacrifices" worthwhile.

I used to spend a lot of money on technology several years ago and managed to curtail the habit when I awoke to how much money I was throwing away (and to the fact that I was hardly using the tech). Another habit was creeping in over the last year or so where I'm buying stuff and later on noticed that I hardly used the thing. Even some self help books that I bought, and some books to do with money management/business; it's almost like I'm convincing myself that I am taking action by buying a certain books; but then they just sit there; and no action is taken.
Nowadays, every time I consider buying one of these books, I just look at the ones already on my shelf, and that immediately rings that alarm bell that says " you haven't even read (or used) those over there ". Same with any itch I get to buy technology. Glad your thumbnail showed up actually. I just moved accommodation and last night I was so annoyed at how much 'stuff' I have accumulated; was so irritating trying to figure out where to put all that STUFF, (things I hadn't used for several months; or years). I'm about to declutter. I think I am trying to fill a void. This was a good reminder (especially your advice on being grateful; it's so easy to forget). Thank you!

I also added ONE "cheat meal" to the geocery list (I.E. if we're too tired to cook, it's something we can put in the oven). It's been working great so far.

Two things that have helped me from shopping for things I don’t need have been to put whatever it is on my Amazon private list and to wait 24 hours before considering it for purchase. Often, I don’t even remember putting it on my list until I put another “must have” out there. Pinterest has been helpful for me to build my perfect home and wardrobe with boards of how I’d like to decorate each room and outfits to adorn myself. It’s a way to just stop being so interested in things that in the end was a bit of a time waster. I unsubscribed to many emails from companies I have purchased from and I am trying to now watch unboxing, product reviews, etc. Some of my friends and coworkers tell me this is crazy…it’s all about the fear of missing out. Using what I have is important as the whole point was to use it. I do treat myself to the occasional items but not like before. Will check out your website next. Take care and stay safe!

The more I bring in, the more mess! I am spending so much and it needs to change. I have a financial goal for my next bday and I want to hit it!

I made a decision 2.5 years ago to buy my own home, which kept me focused on saving and not spending. I still have moments when I’ll be influenced to buy something, but I need to do some home renovations, so that helps curb my behaviour. Plus, over the past few years I’ve learnt How to reframe my thoughts to help me stay focused.

Social media is a big trigger for me, I spend money on things I truly do not need whenever I'm plugged in. I'm consciously avoiding instagram and facebook right now.

I didn’t know spend for six months and boy did it make me realize the stuff I was spending money on very frivolously. I no longer spend like that it was a big eye-opener for me. You should try it sometime.

Paid off my home and now putting my money towards upgrading heat air and hot water systems that are way too old. I’d rather spend money on my needs than wants because they have better value.

Advertising algorithms follow your clicks online and create tailored ads just for you. Once you understand this and are aware of the subliminal suggestions coming at you, you will be free. It works the same way as gambling and other addictions. Cut up the credit card, limit online browsing and block the ads in your social media platforms. Get debt free as fast as you can. Shopping is a boredom reliever, not a hobby. Take up some new activity or join a club or therapy group to understand the triggers for shopping- or just binge watch some hoarder shows and visualise your home in ten years if you were to stop throwing out the amazon boxes.

Watching this for the second time. I won't be purchasing the purple dress I just saw. Getting ready to pay off 2 bills in June. I need to detox social media. I'm not easily influenced by what I see. It's when I am feeling low I feel the need to buy something. Going to work on that.

Recently deleted Instagram again, I had been using ig on browsers but I had to reinstall the app because I didn't have the silence someone feature. After that I started using the app again but I noticed I was buying a lot of things since the app has more ads. Never again 😬

I was much better at being thoughtful about buying things that would actually make my life better or easier during 2020. When I was at home. As soon as things started up again I was back to impulse buying. I'm not sure exactly why.
