I love everything about this. "Seek and ye shall find"! I have long wanted a 'pin' but had no idea how to use one. Concise, and gently informative, this is a well-spent 15 mins of any angler's time. Excellent, and thank you!
Thank you for your comments. Best of luck with your fishing.
Centrepins 101, never seen anyone running a pin over here in Norway, but have been keen to learn it for myself. This is just what the doctor ordered. Thank you for making and putting this film up. :-)
My pleasure.
I once saw an angler in his thirties, using a spinning rod fitted with a centrepin reel and he was casting a lure for Yellowtail bait. This was up in Noosaville next to the fisheries boat shed. I stood there watching in fascination as he would flick the rod tip and flick the bottom of the reel’s rim with the other hand. He was landing fish after fish and never got an overrun or tangle! 😅 Something I will never forget.
Best video I have seen on the centrepin. The slo-mo sequence on Wallis cast is very helpful. Thank you.
My pleasure, best of luck with your fishing.
well done// . info spot on if this gives anglers the confidence to have go they will be so glad they did . bored with carp then get back to why we fish in the first place . this video is a first step to wonderful way to catch well done amateur angler . fellow anglers give it a go you will love it .
This is brilliant. Thank you for the all the detail and effort in making this film. AS a life long Fly angler, I'm now planning to use a centrepin in winter course angling and this has given me valuable information!
My pleasure, very best of luck with your winter fishing.
Thanks for the demonstration of the Wallis - one of the best and clearest descriptions I've come across.
You are very welcome, best of luck.
Absolutely superb video this. I bought an old vintage "The Gemina" centre pin at the bootfair a while back and I've never used it. Mainly because there are few rivers near me to fish that are free but I'm planning to join a club I've just discovered which has a stretch of the Waveney that's only half an hour away. Having never used one before this video has been just what I needed. So Thankyou so much for taking the time to create this tutorial. Much appreciated.
You are very welcome, best of luck.
As a fly angler I’ve been tempted to give grayling trotting a go for quite a while but didn’t really understand how to use the centre pin reel. Thank you so much for this very informative video.
I am glad you found it helpful. Best of luck with your Grayling fishing.
Very informative for someone like myself new to centerpin fishing, thank you.
My pleasure and the best of luck with your pin.
Fantastic - I never knew a thing about centrepin reels (only ever fly-fished), so this was a splendid introduction
Great introduction to the centerpin reel, I knew almost nothing about it, thanks.
The tip about covering the knot with a piece of tape is so perfect, why didn't I think of that? My line has been catching on the knot I tied it on with and has been occasionally impeding the cast, many thanks for your help, tight lines 👍
It's those little things that make such a difference. Thanks for your comment, best of luck.
Fantastic video, thoroughly enjoyed it. Very educational, clear, concise, detailed. A joy to watch you fishing and putting it all into action.
For 30 years I put the line on backwards ( off the top) but recently have experimented with the line coming off the bottom. I've not noticed any difference in terms of tangles so, as it's easier winding quickly somehow this way, I've continued with it. Nice video. 🙂
I must admit I have found centrepin reel fishing so enjoyable it's been a long time since I used one as a kid! .Tench fishing this year has been a real pleasure with one. But for me a line guard is essential.
Explain please . Line guard
@@derekkearns3377 As fitted to one of the reels demonstrated in this video it certainly helps control line on windy days etc.
@@myke.h2913 cheers
I am just getting used to a centrepin this year, for trotting for grayling, dace and chub.
I have caught a grayling and a small chub, plus a few small roach and rudd in a stillwater. I bought a second-hand centrepin, and it seem OK. The only problem is that I loaded the line so that it emerges at the top, near the handle (a mistake) and as there is no line guard, I tend to get tangles around the reel seat. Do you know if it is possible to buy a line guard on its own? The reel has holes where I presume the line guard could be fitted.
Just bought a centrepin reel, can't wait for it to arrive! How to use and cast with a centrepin reel is very well explained in this video. Thanks : )
My pleasure, enjoy your new reel and the best of luck.
What make is the black reel you are using please😊
I used to have a 5.1/2" handle-less, extra wide Leeds reel that would spin for ages with one bat. The beauty of Leeds reels is there's plenty of room for your fingers between the rim and the seat. After reading an article by the great angler Dave Thomas I had mine set up with the line coming off the top which I found gave greater trotting control and sticking you fingers in one of the holes soon became second nature when playing a fish. Sadly I let it go when my trotting days ended.
I like the tip on respooling useing a shoe to hold the line spool, great idear!😀
Another good one is a bucket or very large cup of water. Works great for me. I use it for loading my baitcasters (I only have Bass fishing experience in South Korea), float fishing, trotting etc.. all very new to me. Can't wait to give it a go.
Cheers. As a nymph fisher fishing bead head Euro style nymphs, I'd like a wee change to bait fishing from time to time. I can't be bothered with ledgering and centre pin looks as skilful and as enjoyable as nymphing. Thanks for sharing.
it is no doubt about it bait fishing with finesse and skill tight lines .
I'm also new to centerpin reel fishing. I have a Speedos which spins a about half a dozen times. Maybe there's a drag screw which I can adjust, which I wouldn't have known about before seeing this great video. Many thanks. Ray
Very informative thanks. I am new to fishing and when I receive my first Centerpin and rod I will give this a try. STill 2 1/2 weeks until I go on my first trip, can't wait!
It is a great pastime, best of luck.
Excellent tutorial on the centrepin: best I've come across. Thank you.
I am glad you found it useful. Best of luck with your fishing.
I just cleaned lubed, and waxed my 6&9 wt Graphite USA flyrods. 6wt has a 1991 cassette reel.
9wt has a 1991 Ross Cimmaron.
Yes, I do have a collection of reels and rods. Including 2 1930’s Chinese split bamboo rods with 1930’s vintage fly reels. Among other rods and reels I’ve collected. My Grandfather used to fish the Beaverkill with Harry Darby and Lee Wulff….
Perfect video. Just picked up my first center pin and this has been a godsend. 👍🏻
Best of luck with your fishing.
well Richard when i asked if you would do a video on Centrepins as there is little around i never thought it would be so well received .//you have done a great job and well done ,//and i wish you a happy new year ..tight lines ,///
Thanks and a happy new year to you too.
Excellent video. Very informative and well explained. With your narration, if felt like a BBC documentary.
Thanks for your comments, best of luck with your fishing.
Excellent video for a beginner like me, just what I needed! Thank you for making this video it has really helped me
Glad it was helpful, best of luck with your fishing.
Top class Richard. I love fishing with a centerpin. Tom
Thanks for such a detailed video. I still need to perfect how to fight larger fish, having lost the first Steelhead trout that I hooked trotting with my centerpin a few months back, but doubt that I could have presented my bait to it with a conventional setup. I will go back to using it in the coming months and may try it sooner on smaller coarse fish.
Best of luck with your fishing.
Nice job on the video, very informative.
thanks for that, iv just brought one of these and was having trouble using it.
Hope it helps, good luck.
Top Vid, very enjoyable & informative. Proper Fishing, ive just bought a Pin Myself can You reccomend a reel line to use I'll be Fishing for Roach, Dace & small Chub on Rivers & Canals come June? I will be using 3-4lb BS Line. Thanks for sharing, Graham.
I use Drennan "Float Fish" line. Thanks for your comment, best of luck.
This was a delight to watch. Thank you.
Glad you enjoyed it, best of luck.
Very good video as always. I always enjoy them
Thank you.
Great to watch and very informative, must admit I have been using pins for years and prefer using a pin as opposed to a bearing pin.. really enjoyed the video. one thing that is bugging me though, one of the places looks very recognisable to me... is that pickwells ( if so I fish it as a syndicate at the moment )
I am glad you liked the video, best of luck with your fishing.
отличное видео. научился сам и научил этому сына! спасибо вам большое за науку.
Great video, what rod is best paired with a true pin reel, would say for example a rod with larger rings make casting easier ?
I use my centrepin's for float fishing, so I use a standard 13 ft float rod (small rings). Hope this helps, best of luck.
Thanks for the reply
I purchased one last year or two. However it wasn't quite as good as expected in that it doesn't spin quite as freely as I thought it would. Lovely reel though still usable. I have since moved over to lure fishing which I enjoy as one can rove freely. One day will do a relaxing day centre pinning
By way off top looks better as one can feather line as it pulls from reel without ur thumb bending backwards😁 another u tuber video. Great vid kind sir. Also u sound like john Wilson any relation ?
Extremely helpful thank you
Thanks for the really informative video. I have a 20+ year old Young Purist II (y2041cl) and it has the small dial on one of the spokes to slow the pay off. How does this actually work to slow down the spin? Is something rubbing on the pin inside the reel? Would I need to replace whatever the 'brake disc' is?
The micro adjuster gently alters the drag to slow the free spin, but I can't imagine you would ever need to replace it. Hope this helps, best of luck.
Brilliant video just a quick Q when doing the Nottingham cast once you released the loops do you keep your thumb on the reel or do you let it spin if that makes sense
Very good video, will be doing some trotting for roach this winter 😊
A calm winters day, tinge of colour in the water, steady flow, bread and a few Roach caught...... perfect.
@@AmateurAngling perfection mate! Doesn't get much better than tip top condition redfins in winter.
Hi, I really enjoyed your very informative video of the centreline reel. Can you please tell me the make of the silver 'pin' reel as i would like to buy one. Thank you.
It's a Greys Bewick centrepin reel, but I don't think they are made anymore. Best of luck with your fishing.
@@AmateurAngling Thanks for that I shall search for one to buy.
I will do better on the grayling this year after watching this - thank you.
Glad it was helpful, best of luck.
Richard, what was the first river you used in this really useful river? An HDAS one?
The river shown in the first few seconds is the HDAS stretch of the Ouse above the weir.
Thanks a lot for informative clip. Especially for episode how to cast using such reel. BRGDS Mark
Thanks very much.
When you have a fish on, do you have drag or is it continuing reeling in??
Nice wee video👍🏻
Running the line from the bottom of the reel at a steep angle up to the first rod ring makes no sense to me as this will surely create friction. Take the line over the top of the reel and the line passes through the rings whilst barely touching them resulting in next to no friction which is surely the point of a free running centrepin.
Also, this allows the user to 'bat' the bottom of the drum away from the body with a great deal of vigor when reeling in line at speed. This is surely much easier than batting the drum towards the body if the line is coming from the bottom of the reel.
Also, there seems to be a fetish in centrepin circles about the need to learn the Wallis cast. It really isn't a requirement.
Brilliant vid once again. Which type pin would be ok for low double figure carp average 8-12lb. As I've heard it's a great way to play them on a pin compared to the normal reel. Thanks
The black reel I use in the film is a 4.5in Wildriver Centrepin which would be fine for the Carp you mention. Although most any similar centrepin would should do, hope this helps.
I had no idea! Thank you sir, new sub!
Hi when using the loop cast do you take your finger of the spool allowing the spool to spin as you flick the rod tip out or keep your finger on the spool allowing the line you have pulled of the spool to go out only thanks
Go with your second option, best of luck.
What a great and informative video. New Sub
Great vid thanks
Very helpful. Thank you.
I wonder why the don't build more center pins with a turning link in the food, for better casting.
I just bought the mad fish one for my first centrepin :)
I have had some good days using mine, please let us know how you get on, best of luck.
Amateur Angling, awesome :) I will do! 🎣 nice detailed video by the way. Very helpful
Waaaaaooooo que linda gracias por compartir 🙏🙏🙏🙏🙏🙏🙏🙏🥰🥰🥰🥰🥰👍👍👍👍👍👍👍👍👍
Thank you ! I ordered one and cant wait to fish for chub. Simon ,germany
Please let us know how you get on, best of luck.
What is the black and blue reel you are using?.
It's a Madfish Wildriver Centrepin
madfishing.com/products/wildriver-centrepin-reel
Do these reels work for conventional fishing?
Joshua, these reels are the epitome of "Conventional Fishing" Moreover nothing else (like the fixed spool) was freely available before the 1950's, & even then "Pins" were the "Mainstay" for the "Working Class" angler!!
Could you please let me know which centre pins you are using in the video you are using
The black reel is a Madfish Wild River, the true pin is a Greys Bewick reel.
Very informative thanks.
Is it fine to put a centre pin on to my rod rest and leave with a bite alarm. as was fishing yesterday caught about 30 Rud. and there was a guy using a centre pin and it made me feel like i want one due to how simple it was.
Go for it, best of luck.
I love the video of the line in the shoe, no talking about it needed, just do it lol
love it!
why not just cast it regularly holding the reel still, throwing and letting go? why you have to pull the loop?
It will tangle
@@MartSpoelstra thx for answering. i seen some other videos teach casting like that though so its a valid technique?
@@w8d2-55 i know that a company named redband makes reels that can cast like a normal spinning reel but most centrepins will backlash and tangle
That is dope.
What is the purpose of center pin fishing?
For me they offer good sport and more enjoyment.
you can make bait look natural to fish so catch more it is not as easy to fish like this. but will have a better catch rate on rivers it is not a lazy anglers first choice so it depends on what type of angler you are .
Maybe cud describe as a purists style. Sure, lots of modern reels do same job.and cast further. The simplicity of a centrepin is great u are in contact as it's just a simple spinning drum controlled mostly by the thumb for drag.
Hahaha I can’t imagine feeling a fish in backwards! Gotta go from the bottom
The late Dave Thomas was a big advocate of having the line come off the top of the reel which is the way I used mine for years back in the 70's and early 80's."Thumbing" the line off is much easier once you get used to it and batting to retrieve is much faster.
My tip for anyone looking to buy a centerpin reel. Get one with a longish stem so you can hold the rod on the reel seat directly above the reel which makes it easier to trot left to right.
Good
Lovely and relaxed video. Modest in its presentation 😊👍. Informative and direct to the subject matter. UNLIKE American videos that too often are crammed with irrelevant waffle prior to getting to the point..
why in the world would you want to use that?
it is ideal for float fishing, the most common technique for salmon and steelhead fishing in the rivers
as seen in the film bait looks natural to the fish you catch more fish its not as easy but rewarding .
If you need to ask, you'll never know!
