- In today's video we take a dive in to the world of crashed EV cars, should I be allowed to work on them with no qualifications? How easy is it to fix? Lets find out.
If you fix it - I will watch.
I drink too that mate 👌🏾
Field of dreams fan? 😂

You can deactivate the handbrake. Sit in the car and switch on ignition, then switch directly to N, don t try to switch to D or R, directly to N. After that a message pops up on the MMI that says " the roll-away protection will be deactivated" with the options "cancel" and "OK". Press OK and the car will have the handbrake deactivated even if you exit the vehicle. Cheers mate keep up the good work.
there will also be a recovery mode that he's not used.
Don’t give up Dean please finish what you started
Fix it! Everyone wants to see the newest car stuff, but no one want to take their car apart. Fix it. and they will watch.
Hats off to you, you have taught me so much and I am 72 it’s great to see you not give up, why do they have to make modern vehicles so hard to work on 🤦♀️
This is interesting. Especially seeing how EVs are moving the ‘no user serviceable parts’ game on.
Hi there, you'll need an Universal Airbag Emulator Resistor Bypass, just plug it in each airbag that triggered, and clear the codes, scan for error codes again to make sure that everything has cleared, then try the learning process again. Keep up the good work.
I own a non-VAG EV and mine has a tow/recovery mode you can activate from the dash which i feel would have saved you a lot of hassle here. Also other manufacturers make the crash fuses more accessible and require less computer interaction to recover. A lot of the things you're getting annoyed at here aren't EV issues, they are specific Audi/VAG issues. But I'm sure in time they will become regulatory/compliance issues! I think my XFR's place on the drive is safe for another few years yet 😂
It is not illegal to do electrical diy in the uk. Part P in 2013 added some requirements for notification on major works as defined by IEEE Wiring regs. Working on high voltage without proper education is stupid and dangerous but isn’t illegal.
Like them or loathe them they aren't going away anytime soon so may as well get used to them so from a curiosity point of view i'm rather interested in this. I'd also like to see you try and fix it and see how it compares to an ICE engined car.
I drive them all the time as we deliver them to customers, I'll be honest, if you're not bothered about cars then they are much smoother and easier to drive. A to B anyway.
@@SavingSalvage Just got rid of my hybrid and gone back to a Petrol Astra but it is 130 BHP like my 3 other Astras but it is a 1.2 turbo 3 pot and so far it is as good.
I recently got rid of a Volvo V60 PHEV, and it was delightful to drive in electric mode.
It is an interesting and brave project Dean.maybe also the best reason I have seen why EV is a flawed plan but not for the reasons we read. These are effectively irreparable at reasonable cost. It confirms why depreciation is catastrophic and that Politicans and well intended owners/ drivers are somewhat in the dark. I fear EV is coming no matter what but the costs of using and owning one will drive things and so far, too complex, too dangerous to repair and still charging problems for most owner. Fix it if you can but I doubt you will make a profit and itis an interesting insight into owning one in old age….you just cannot.🧐😳😳
Take faith from the good ole USA. There are many repair shops repairing Tesla’s every day, even developing their own spares and technology for repairs. There are a few small operators who sre doing repairs in the UK, which needs to grow exponentially to meet demand. We can’t keep writing off new cars for relatively little damage! Much as I would like to see you fix this car, I fear for your personal safety and I think it will be a money pit with no returns for you, unless you want to seek sponsorship from somewhere. You are one brave man Dean👍🇬🇧😎
Another wonderful video. This shows exactly why insurance premiums are going through the roof!😢
I have done a few of these repairs and can confirm you have to replace the airbags to get it to run again it’s a pain
Are these VW specific problems. As it seems to be all design and software related it should not use as a general point against EVs... Hope to see you continue this build.
Glad you didn’t die Dean! I guess the pyro fuse is buried in the battery to force the repair shop to visually inspect the battery for physical damage before re-energizing?
I’m a electrician and I wouldn’t dick about with that 400v and 450A is no joke especially DC
As you say high amp DC is instant death. Not that AC is any joke mind you. Weird fact my initials are DC my sister's AC and we really really don't get on 😮
As an HV electrical tech as long as you don't short the + & - and brake the battery down (so split it so it's more manageable voltage and current wise) It shouldn't be too bad the cells in the battery will be modular so it can be made safe to work on.
@@plasmaDave Hopefully you can rectify that 😀
@@GaryB007 😂 nice work
@@GaryB007too much resistance I'm afraid 😂
A great watch and it's the first EV I have seen anyone attempt a repair on, and it would be interesting to see if a full repair is viable? Based on the purchase price you would think there would be some profit? Just be careful (or avoid) the high voltage side as that stuff can kill!
There’s lots of these starting to come up on salvage auctions. It’s very interesting how much of a problem they are to sort out.Fix It please.
I'd love to see you fix it. I brought an ev myself last year and it's very interesting to see why they are overpiced and the insurance costs so much. Just the control module price was scary.
Very interesting. Need to continue with the build plz 👍🏻
Brave man playing with such high voltage. I agree, crap! I’d put it back through copart, but now you have it, fix it.
Dean buy some LV electrical gloves when working around the HV parts they protect up to 1000v Boddingtons Electrical Ltd and a visor
Dean if it is fixable then show us how you do it so we can avoid EVs and all who drive them.
i'm not an ev fan but your video is about the repair not the sales, so why wouldn't you watch it.
Well you bought it I would say try to fix it,the next step you would have to on any car is get all the airbags and control modual reset by a company that does that.
As there will inevitably going to be loads of EV's in need of repair after accidents, and subsequent write offs there is definitely a gap in the market for independent specialists to be able to get around the "replace everything" main dealer ethos and get them back on the road at a reasonable cost. Seems that they build these under a one use policy and if they are crashed you start again. probably helps new car sales. they look a bloody nightmare to work on though
Did you re-plug in the disconnect?
You could use dummy airbag resistors to make sure it all works
You have got to finish it off now Dean. Great vid, definitely something different.
Eye opener that the manufacurers have effectively ruled out repairs by independent garages that dont haave access to ODIS.
So thier cars are effectively very expensive throw away items after even a monor shunt that sets off the bags. I guess until the likes of ROSS-Tech figure out how to reset these modules and re-energise the batteries even a minor shunt is going to be an uneconomical repair due to dealer parts and labour prices.
Also why couldnt VAG just enable a "workshop mode" that allows you to at least move the car around at say 5mph max once the pyro had been replaced? 😆
I would like to see this fixed dean would be a good watch I think nice motor 👍🏽👍🏽
It will be interesting to see what you have to do to get it working again. Will be great car once it’s fixed. 🤞
EV depreciation has been great, really good used deals if you're in the market for one
You must continue the fix... EV's would still be the noorm, within a few years.... 🎉 This would be a training manual for many in the UK!!!!
Dean you might have to take one for the team. If you go through the nause of repairing this heap we can all use it as evidence as to why people shouldn't buy them..."because you have to do this, this, this and this...just to get it rolling"....imagine what evidence you would build for the prosecution if you do ever manage to get it running...
Definitely fix it. I’m an old school “why not have the V8” guy but also appreciate EVs and own one. It’s too easy to swallow the reactionary rhetoric but there are plenty of positives and the technology is coming on a pace. At £10,500 it’s cheap and should still be worth £20K plus fixed. Some of the issues may be more an Audi thing than an EV thing. I’m sure some have an easily accessible quick disconnect for a start. Interesting seeing the battery come out and the cover removed.
Been skipping videos because they felt "same old" but this looks fun.
I would be really interested to see it through, even if EVs don't make any sense.
EVs seem to be gaining a foothold here Downunder so carry on Dean. Seems to be a fair bit of headroom to make a profit, depending upon the crash damage and any legal issues surrounding resale.
I guess you would normally try and cost the crash damage first anyway.
Love your work!
🦘👍
To be fair, a lot of the issues were not because the car is an EV, but because of the way that the software is written. Yep - the big, heavy, slab of lithium hung underneath has caused its fair share of issues, but it's VAG who decided to put the pyro in such a stupid place and it's VAG who have decided that you can't do anything with the car until every fault is cleared, and have made it so hard and expensive to 100% clear the faults. It turned out that one of the biggest gripes - the rolling resistance - went away when the fault codes were cleared. So I say go on and fix the car and then do an objective critique of what was difficult purely because of the EV battery and drivetrain.
You need to get yourself a towing bar!! Very useful for moving cars around a yard and pushing onto ramps!! 😊
Don't like evs but I'm more than happy watching you take the risks repairing one
Just don't park it inside anywhere 🔥🔥🔥
Why's that?
@@ProdriveP1 EVs that have never been in accidents(not a lot), suddenly ignite, so one that's been involved in an accident is a risk
@@jackschnitzer6092 What are you on about? Absolutely clueless.
"Petrol or diesel cars are about 20 times more likely to catch fire than EVs, with ICE vehicles experiencing 1,530 fires per 100,000 sold compared to 25 EV fires per 100,000 sold."
@@ProdriveP1 When EV goes up in flames, it's really hard to extinguish.
@@StaticVapour590 Good job it happens 20 times less than petrol or diesel cars in that case then! 👍
I welcome the EV's to this channel, very interesting to see how you are able to fix them!
BTW it's legal to work on your home electrics you just need to get some electrician to check and approve your work however if you have never done it before I would leave it to the pros
I did the exact same thing with 23 plate id3. Purchased from Copart with 2000 miles on the clock. It had minimal damage to the bodywork but the pyro fuse had blown and some of the airbags. If this is the way we are going to save the planet the manufacturers, dealers and insurance companies need to have a rethink. We can’t just write vehicles off with such minimal damage. It was a steep learning curve getting my car running again but well worth it. My advice to you is get it repaired and run it for a while. They really aren’t as bad to run every day as you seem to think. Although I do agree that there is always a time and place where ICE vehicles will always rule.
Any tips? I purchased a Mustang Mach-E but can’t figure out where the pyro fuse is even at. I’ve done bodywork all my life and thought I could handle an EV but it’s hard finding any info lol.
Please fix it :) - btw. the reason is that the fuse you replaced is basically also an airbag controlled by the airbag system - so you need all airbag errors fixed first.
A lot of ranting about EV's but these issues are basically crap because AUDI/VW decided to not make it possible to work on it, like you said at the end of the video, it should be possible to re-energize it without new airbags.
Definitely fix it. If you work out how to and develop the skills and experience, and others remain afraid to do the same you will just keep picking up bargains! Eventually people won’t be daunted by the new tech and maybe manufacturers will make things easier to bolster their second hand values and help with new sales in the process.
Great episode. Very expensive :) but well shown the other side of "ecological"
Just watched your video
Can’t you disconnect airbags and replace with resistors see if you can delete airbag faults
not keen on EV's but watching the repair process is still interesting, so if you fix it, i'll watch 👍
this has been very interesting .definitely repair it,love the channel
I like EV`s and Im happy that you do a try it. Share it will be a part of our future.
I’d like to see this rebuild , however the risk to reward ratio is heavily outweighed. Definitely shouldn’t be touching it if not clued up👌🏻 stick to the combustion🤞🏻
Not my type of thing but definitely interesting to see if you can fix it 👍
Yeah.....Fix it!
You got me interested now.
Loving the content 👍
I love to see you fix it!
Great video Dean.
EV, just another way for manufacturers and main stealers to ensure they are doing the work on their cars and putting small businesses out of the picture. I have a '24 Rav4 Hybrid: only because the petrol engine is the main driver (yes I'm aware of my hypocrisy)- but will change it at 18 mnths. Even though I really really look after my cars, it's still got those batteries and miles of computers that in 10 years will be f****d.
Put 0.50 pense resistors and try if u can reenergise battery for test
I love the videos I really do however me personally working on ev’s I wouldn’t like to get complacent I understand the absence of voltage through the circuit apart from the battery however it might have been good to leave out the way of shutting down the high voltage system and the importance of correct ppe such as class 0 gloves and insulated mat as bare minimum so not everyone or anyone can attempt this again love the videos
Some roller skates for the wheels would have came in handy 😎👍
I would like to see you fix it.
yes please I would like you to continue very interesting Peter from sunny Windsor
Those big orange power connectors under the car?...Imagine driving through some axle height water...😳😳😳😳😮🇬🇧
MA Brought me here, I've now found this & Im invested.
If you can get it going, repair it. Would be great to see!! 👌👌
You might as well finish it off, be interesting to see just how much work it takes!
ev's are obviously the future, so repair videos like this is super interesting
Fix it, I'll watch it, just be careful with the High Voltage Systems.
That handbrake issue is probably the same on a lot of modern ICE card to be fair. You don't want an unoccupied car rolling away by itself.
I am interested now, got to fix it!!
Theres a setting in car settings to allow car to free roll might be a bit late though 😂
I'd say yes to getting it up and running would be very interesting mate .on how you do it😂😂😂😂❤
Dean, stick to IC cars while there are some available, love pistons and crankshafts. EVs are designed to give dealer service depts work that would otherwise vanish when IC engines are no more, EVs don't need the attention of IC......
I would love to see it fixed, and then at least you don’t have to ever touch one again 😂
You can see why insurance companies just write EV's off after even a minor bump.
I guess, once done, we all know what needs to be done. As always, follow the process.
Don’t do anything for me, but, everything has its place, they’re not going away.
I’m on my to the pub, in my S500L 5.5 😂
We need to see this to the finish now
Very interesting work, please go on! Greetz from germany
1:45 - You only de-energize the battery when none of the cells have any voltage... If you are talking about the service disconnect, then I highly recommend you to learn a lot, lot more before touching much of the high voltage system. Looks like most of what this car needs doesn't require touching the high voltage system though.
Fix it Dean. EVs definitely have their place in the motoring world. They're not for everyone.
Great price! Definitely fix it and you'll have a very nice car.
It is interesting but stick to what you know your better at petrol/diesel.
Petrol, Hybrid might be better than a full EV CAR, probably more chance of getting it going. Keep up the good work.
Fix it!! Be safe while doing so! Good Luck boss.
Get it fixed, definitely an interesting one this Dean
you should wear electric safe glove to protect the 400vs
I’d love to see it running mate so go for it and sod the rest
True that mr main character it is only your opinion that matters, isn’t it?
I thought it was recommended to replace the entire battery as you could rupture a cell even with a slight hit hence why EVs get written off so easily. I’d like to see you fix it and see what other problems come your way but personally I don’t think EVs are worth fixing. I can understand why you can’t drive it after replacing the fuse because there is a chance of wiring damage underneath the bonnet which could make the car live and kill you
Please continue with it, is this more Audi design than EV madness. Speaking as an EV driver. Bonus, you are not dead - yet!!
😂😂 Dean, its looks as if your going to have to fix it... Different content is always the way forward m8 keeps everyone interested and wanting to view your channel... Keep up the good work 👍👍
It's really interesting but it looks like it could give you some grey hairs! I vote to fix it to see if it's worth doing 🤙🏻
That blue battery sealant is Hylomar Blue about £24 a tube robbing gits
Not a fan of ev cars but I agree love to see how hard it is to get back on the road 😊
UA-cam getting too confident with the advertisements. It’s annoying every 5 minutes 🤦🏽♂️
I'm not an ev fan, but I'll watch it if you decide to fix it
It’s not illegal to do electrical working your home,I would not advise it, that’s why electricians have to sit an apprenticeship. If you do, and you have a fire your insurance might not pay out.
Please fix the car
I will follow if you proceed even though EV's are hated but it's interesting to follow this project to learn a bit more about how they have done and for now it looks like its build more stupid than clever.
quite frankly you should just sling all that mess into Audi's skip and be done with it .
I'm sure there is a tree hugger that will take if your hands if you fix it. If it doesn't put you out of pocket fixing this car, I'll watch👍👍
Fix it. Hard part done, rest is Audi dash (ugh!) airbagteam and you are home and dry. Of, apart from the lack of a front end!
I know nothing about ev's but do you think it's a safety lock that you are unable to charge high voltage side before you do any work to airbags or anything you could risk shock from?
Use 2.2ohm resistors in place of airbags and seatbelts to fool odis they;re in working condition to get it running, if you're not repairing it yourself.
1:17 - It's not illegal to do electrical work on your own home.
